There’s only a few days left to see Frank Stella’s recent sculptures at Deitch’s New York location. The large colorful works look drastically different depending on the angle with which they are viewed.
Stella sadly passed away at the beginning of this month. Although it is sad that we won’t be able to see what he would have come up with next, these sculptures help demonstrate how inventive he remained throughout his career.
From the gallery’s website-
Double wide flatbed trucks navigated the bridges into Manhattan to transport five monumental works by Frank Stella to Jeffrey Deitch’s SoHo gallery.
They are among the most ambitious and most radical works being made by any artist today. They extend Stella’s forms even further into three dimensions. The works are not painted sculptures or relief paintings. They completely fuse painting and sculpture in a way that has never been achieved before. The sculptures have never been shown in New York City.
Frank Stella said that one of the objectives of his recent artistic approach has been to “build a painting rather than painting a painting.” The new work is a realization of this ambition. Stella combines traditional artists’ techniques with high technology to create his new work. His monumental sculptures begin with computer models that are transformed into a series of small sculptural maquettes through 3-D printing. The artist refines these models in the studio and then sends them to fabricators in the Netherlands and Belgium where they are engineered and constructed using technology derived from shipbuilding. The sections are then shipped to Stella’s studio in the Hudson Valley where they are refined and painted with automotive paint.
The exhibition features works from two series, Scarlatti Sonata Kirkpatrick from 2014, and Atlantic Salmon Rivers from 2021-23. The Scarlatti Sonata Kirkpatrick sculptures are created with high density foam covered in fiberglass. The Grand Cascapedia, inspired by the Canadian river known for salmon fishing, is made from aluminum. As in all of Stella’s work, the forms embody their materials. The materials inspire the forms.
Stella’s work of the 1980s were characterized by its extension of two-dimensional painting into his version of baroque space. These new works extend beyond baroque space into outer space. The forms seem to float in anti-gravity. They ascend, transcending their weight. They do not have front or a back, existing in the round.
Frank Stella has expanded the art discourse for more that six decades. His new work continues to advance art into a place where it has never been before.
If you are able to see the work in person at the gallery, make sure to take the steps to the top where you will find a diorama containing the sculptural models (pictured below).

New Bobcat Painting
Rebecca Latham is known for her stunning wildlife paintings, and her latest work in progress is no exception. The bobcat seated on a log, accentuated with lichen, is a beautiful depiction of this elusive animal. One of the most striking aspects of the painting is the lighting. Latham has chosen to use soft, varied browns to create a sense of warmth and naturalness. The bobcat is illuminated in a…

Votive ship, Scandinavia, 1590-1610
A votive ship is a ship model displayed in a church. Votive ships were constructed and given as gifts to the church by ship builders and seamen, often as a token of gratitude for a safe return from a hazardous voyage.
The practice of displaying model ships in churches stems from the Middle Ages and appears to have been known throughout Christian Europe. The oldest known remaining votive ship is a Spanish ship model from the 15th century.
This is the oldest surviving votive ship in Scandinavia. It was probably built between 1590 and 1610, possibly in the Low Countries. Originally it hung in Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrkan). It has been badly damaged over the centuries: the masts, rigging, beak and quarter galleries are all missing. The galleon-shaped hull is lavishly decorated with miniature portraits. Among these figures are monks, harp-playing ladies and a black man in European dress. The painted decorations include wine leaves, pillars painted in trompe-l`oeil, griffins, basilisks and lions. After c. 1610 it became more common to decorate the ships with painted sculptures.
Like many other votive ships, the bottom of the hull is unrealistically reduced in size as the model was meant to be viewed from below. Generally, this type of model was more a work of art/religious object rather than a faithful scale model of an actual sailing ship.

painting
hey there! glad you’re back. let’s talk about why painting is such a fantastic hobby. 🎨
painting is a wonderful way to express yourself and unwind. it helps you focus, reduces stress, and boosts creativity. plus, you get to create something beautiful that you can be proud of. it’s like a mini escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
now, if you’re ready to start painting, here’s a simple step-by-step guide to get you going:
choose your medium: decide whether you want to start with acrylics, oils, or watercolors. acrylics are great for beginners because they’re easy to work with and dry quickly.
gather your supplies: you’ll need some basic materials like paints, brushes, a palette, canvas or paper, and some water or solvent for cleaning your brushes.
set up your workspace: find a comfortable spot with good lighting. lay down some newspaper or a drop cloth to protect your surfaces.
learn the basics: start with some basic techniques like blending, layering, and brush strokes. you can find plenty of tutorials online to help you get started.
start with simple projects: pick something easy to paint, like a landscape or a still life. don’t worry about making it perfect – just have fun and experiment.
practice regularly: the more you paint, the better you’ll get. try to set aside some time each week to work on your skills.
get inspired: look at other artists’ work for inspiration. visit galleries, browse online, or join a local art group to connect with other painters.
here are a couple of youtube videos to help you get started:

Separation 11347
This was, by Trazyn's infallible reckoning, his eleven thousand three hundred and forty-seventh divorce from Orikan. The Diviner, on the other hand, was adamant that it was in fact only their eleven thousand three hundred and forty-sixth. This dispute was what had caused the current divorce.
At first he had settled contentedly into his usual divorce routine, entering his meticulously-preserved time loop of a "Happy Divorce" party plucked from the Terran city-state of Nova Yoruk in early M3 as the Imperium kept its years.
As had been the case so many times before, the Lord of Solemnace basked over and over again in the reassurance of the assembled middle-aged humans that he was indeed so much better off without that asshole in his life, rounding off the festivities with a cake depicting a miniature confectionery figurine of Trazyn using a guillotine on a similarly-constructed sugar-based effigy of Orikan.
It was all very gratifying, and he was certain that when the amusement faded he would return to find Orikan waiting for him apologetically, his eminently bullyable faceplate resembling a weeping juvenile felid.
It was, however, not to be. He returned to the Galleries to find no trace whatsoever of Orikan. He was so disconcerted that he even briefly considered retrieving his much-prized clone of the primarch Fulgrim from stasis, but decided against it. It had, after all, only been a few subjective decades since he had placed the clone into a detailed diorama of the genuine being's final battle with his erstwhile companion Ferrus Manus for enrichment purposes. He had been thoroughly pleased with himself for coming up with entertainment of such realism and, judging by his mute tears of joy, so too was the clone.
What a wonderful caregiver I am, he had thought, jauntily walking away. Perhaps he and Orikan should adopt, which when used by Trazyn the Infinite is a word which means kidnap, an Astartes or Aeldari together.
Time passed and with no sign of Orikan's return, Trazyn felt it justifiable to seek other outlets for his multifarious urges. After exhausting every category on Cronhub and getting banned from Nemesorindr, he arose to find that the necrodermis of his lower limbs had spontaneously reformed itself into the shape of a baggy, ill-maintained example of the Terran garment known as sweatpants.
This could not stand. He resolved that he would start A Project, an undertaking of such majesty and glory that no one, least of all that cycloptic fool Orikan, could deny him the attention he deserved.
After brief forays into stop-motion animation and painting miniature Space Marines (accomplished by shrinking normal Astartes through arcane technosorcery and ignoring the resulting high-pitched noises as he applied pigment of a much too viscous consistency to their battleplate) his thoughts returned once more to his display of the battle between the primarchs on Isstvan V.
Theirs was a tragic tale of heartfelt companionship severed by corruption and betrayal. He himself had mentally projected several hundred phaeronfics about them to the great repository of the Necron race whose name, although untranslatable into any other language, was best rendered as The Sarcophagus-Belonging-To-Us-Alone, and some of them had even received multiple scarabs of approval from the discerning audience entrapped there forever.
Surely, he reasoned with the confidence of a being who had long since activated the developer console of his necrodermis body and manually increased its confidence, intelligence and charisma variables to 100, this meant that no one other than he could restore their friendship.
And so, in single-minded pursuit of compassion and friendliness, the Archaeovist and his forces wrought a swathe of destruction across the galaxy.
A foray into the Eye of Terror itself resulted in the capture of Fulgrim through the use of a vast two-pronged stick to pin the writhing daemon prince to the ground where he had been basking one day, while the sacrifice of his entire collection of ancient Terran doujinshis to the haemonculi of Commorragh itself had given him forbidden knowledge sufficient to wrest back the very soul of Ferrus Manus himself and place it into a suitably prepared necron host body via the biomorphic resonance of the necrodermis which had coated his hands in life.
Finally, the moment of glory came. The daemon Fulgrim and the metallically resurrected Ferrus Manus were placed into the same containment chamber and -
It was not at all what Trazyn had hoped. After a monumental bout of hand-to-hand combat lasting for hour upon hour, the two primarchs had settled into an uneasy stalemate, in the sense that Fulgrim was currently coiled around a light fixture on the ceiling and Ferrus had run out of objects to throw at him.
"You're even uglier now than you were when you had flesh," Fulgrim hissed venomously.
"And you were more of a snake then than you are now," Ferrus shot back, the frozen inexpressiveness of his necrodermis faceplate matching the famously stone-faced countenance he had displayed in life.
Fortunately Trazyn, who never made a mistake of any kind whatsoever, had prepared for such an eventuality. A concealed slot opened in the ceiling of the containment chamber, dislodging Fulgrim from his perch, and through the opening there descended a vast garment of woven silver-metallic fabric, emblazoned with inscrutable Necron symbols and sized in such a way as to accomodate the bodies of both primarchs.
"This is your get along shirt," Trazyn said, his voice amplified throughout the containment chamber. "You will wear it."
#written in one go because i thought it would be funny#i like portraying trazyn as having no awareness whatsoever of the consequences of his actions#and instantly filtering everything in the way most flattering to himself#trazyn the infinite#fulgrim#ferrus manus#fanfic#wh40k#warhammer 40k#warhammer 40000#Sarcophagus Belonging To Us Alone is down again :(#neves writes

"UNTITLED" // 2007 YOSHITOMO NARA 奈良 美智 [coloured pencil on coloured paper | 16 ½ x 11 5/8"]
With her short cropped hair, dark green dress and rebellious energy, the girl in Untitled (2007) emits the youthful defiance that has come to typify works by Yoshitomo Nara. [...]
"He is widely celebrated for his paintings and coloured pencil drawings of juvenile, cartoonish characters with large gazing eyes and endearing personalities. They inhabit imagined and insouciant paper worlds, brandish absurd objects and props—knives, sprouts, cigarettes, and electric guitars—and express a wide range of capricious, childlike emotion. Stern and somewhat sulky, our subject hovers in indeterminate space. She stands upon a Japanese flag with her small feet positioned perfectly over its crimson sun. Emblazoned around her miniature figure are the words ‘Up Yours!’, and, ‘All the Nations!’. As an advocate of peace, questions of nationhood, conflict and world politics weave through Nara’s art in such pithy phrases and symbols. Exhibited at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga—the first show of the artist’s work in Spain in 2007-2008—the present work was one of twenty coloured pencil drawings hung along the final wall of the gallery.
Born in 1959 in Japan’s rural Aomori Prefecture, Nara’s youth was marked by his country’s rapid post-war economic development and an influx of Western pop-culture, from Disney animation to punk and rock and roll. The artist expresses heartfelt nostalgia for the retro media—record-sleeves and comic books—that offered escapism from an otherwise solitary childhood. ‘Of course if you think back to the ’70s,’ he says, ‘information moved very differently. There was no Internet obviously and even the release date of albums in Japan could be delayed as much as six months … I would just sit there, listen to the music, look at the art on the cover and I think I really developed my imagination through that’ (N. Hegert, ‘Interview with Yoshitomo Nara,’ Artslant, 18 September 2010). This sensitivity to the worn, tactile quality of objects is triumphant in his art today and distinguishes him from the likes of Takashi Murakami and his Superflat movement. Untitled bears the enlivening traces of artist’s hand, present in the rough ‘outside-the-line’ scribbles that imply the girl’s messy hair. Bracketed with Nara’s unfiltered, handwritten text, the image feels distinctly personal, like a secret note exchanged between friends.
As early as his time at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts in the 1980s, Nara began to draw onto envelopes, cardboard, and scraps of found paper. He continued these explorations at the prestigious Kunstakademie Düsseldorf where, under the tutorship of German Neo-Expressionist painter A. R. Penck, he was encouraged to work fluidly between painting and drawing. ‘I [loved] to draw every day and the scrawled sketches, never shown to anybody, started piling up’, Nara has said. ‘Like journal entries reflecting the events of each day, they sometimes intersected [with] memories from the past. My little everyday world became a trigger for the imagination, and I learned to develop and capture the imagery that arose’ (Y. Nara, ‘Nobody’s Fool’, in N. Miyamura and S. Suzuki (eds.), Yoshitomo Nara: The Complete Works, Volume 1: Paintings, Sculptures, Editions, Photographs 1984-2010, San Francisco 2011, p. 43). Mischievous, cute, and quietly ferocious, the present work attests to the enduring appeal of Nara’s little rebels." — via Christie's

okay thinking about the secret art history au fic idea i've had again and like yeah.
pandora taking them all out into the woods and taking a bite out of a raw deer heart for a performance art piece (james being absolutely horrified)
james running into regulus on day one who says "cubitum eamus?" instantly and james is like "??????"
peter turning up dead after betraying the art history group bc duh
marlene mckinnon breaking into a professor's art show and slashing all his paintings with a meat cleaver
all of the group meeting at sirius and regulus' elaborately decorated apartment the night before exams because it's a tradition to study doing drunk flashcards (they all show up to tests hungover except for dorcas and peter who never seem affected no matter how much they drink)
barty being a nepo baby and by being a descendant of michael knoedler and having a lavish country house everyone visits to drink whiskey out of tea cups and hold seances to talk to dead artists
the group running a little shop of forgeries that mary swears is just for practice at being an art restorationist but ,,, some of the fakes keep conveniently going missing
james staying over the winter break in a freezing vermont apartment with no heating before regulus shows up on his doorstep like 'come stay w me'
the group in charge of identifying 17th century prints for a project and sabotaging each other because the winner curates the university's next art show
lily taking james to a burger king parking lot to do cocaine after he starts spiraling about peter's death
instead of a bacchanal there's a heist challenge (most expensive work stolen wins) and people wind up in JAIL but regulus and sirius use their bajillion dollars to bail them out
pandora volunteering at a hospital to watch patients die so she can depict the changeover from life to death better in her artworks
their exams being all-intensive spot the forgery, restore this artwork, bring in a miniature of a gallery space u designed with artworks and an explanation of ur curatorial process
#anyway just thinking thoughts#thinking too many thoughts for a girl who isn't writing these days#well writing anything for public view#tsah ramblings

Hermithouse update!
Aka the miniature wooden house I'm making for school / an art gallery, that I'm trying to add as many hermitcraft references to as possible!
Fun fact, the second floor is removable :3
Look at the lil bridge and spikey rocks i made for the outside area :D and all it took to make them was a small blood sacrifce! (<-this isn't a joke btw, i ended up getting hurt while using an electric saw... DW IT'S FINE ITS JUST A SMALL CUT LMFAO!!!)
The house is built on a river next to a forrest, but since i left that part in school over the weekend, i can't show yall my progress on it ;^;
More info + pictures of the whole house bellow!
(if u wanna suggest/already suggested sth, the update on the suggestions is below too!)
The deadline is Wednesday, which sadly means i don't have time to finish/add everything until then... BUT! Once the gallery is over, i will try to add the rest, including some more obvious references!
My current plans are:
Painting of a BIG moon
Original 12 bamboo
Mending book reference
Scarland artbook
Grumbot Laptop
Snail
Cherryblossom tree
The river near Magic Mountain (+gems deadly rocks)
Effo statue
Permitoffice posters
Hotguy poster
Gems boat
already added/gona try n add these before Wednesday, I'll add these after the gallery
Most of these are things you guys suggested, big ty for that! If u have any more ideas, feel free to tell me, although i will only be able to add those after the gallery!

Reaching Out – Raccoon in Progress
Reaching Out, opaque and transparent watercolor on board, 8″ x 10″, detail view. “In my new painting, “Reaching Out”, I aimed to capture the beauty and grace of of a fleeting moment. The raccoon, perched on a log, reaches out with gentle curiosity towards a butterfly.
