A Milwaukee Duck Feathursday
There are field guides and then there are field guides, and the famed Wisconsin conservationist and UW-Madison professor of Wildlife Management Aldo Leopold believes that this field guide is a step above: The Ducks, Geese and Swans of North America by Canadian engineer, businessman, and conservationist Francis H. Kortright (1887–1972), illustrated by the Canadian ornithologist and artist Terence Michael Shortt (1911-1986), and published in Washington, D.C. by the American Wildlife Institute in 1943.
In the introduction to the book, Leopold laments that "the existing literature on the identification of waterfowl describes manly their spring plumages. This is of little avail to the sportsman who is afield mainly in the fall, and it hardly suffices for the ornithologist, who is afield at all seasons." But in this guide, Leopold writes, "Mr. Kortright has sensed the need for a year-round waterfowl book and has done a scholarly job of writing one. . . . I do find much useful and interesting subject matter which most ornithologists omit. . . ." That Kortright has no formal training as a zoologist does not phase Leopold: "While he disclaims being an ornithologist, I detect no lack of ornithological competence in what he has written."
Of the illustrations, he writes, "Mr. Shortt's paintings, portraying all of the more important plumages of a given species, in themselves justify the publication of this volume." That both author and illustrator are Canadians also seems a plus: "To my mind it is appropriate that this book should issue from the pen of a Canadian. Canada is the birthplace of most waterfowl; this book attests her growing activity in waterfowl research and conservation."
We represent this field guide with images of some ducks most commonly found in our Milwaukee area: the Mallard, Wood Duck, and Blue-winged Teal are present in summer, with the Mallard and Wood Duck as year-round residents, while the Mergansers, Bufflehead, and Goldeneye are most prevalent in winter. We end with a couple of plates of random goslings and ducklings. Why? Well, because they're just so darn adorable!

Can't afford art school?
After seeing post like this 👇
And this gem 👇
As well as countless of others from the AI generator community. Just talking about how "inaccessible art" is, I decided why not show how wrong these guys are while also helping anyone who actually wants to learn.
Here is the first one ART TEACHERS! There are plenty online and in places like youtube.
📺Here is my list:
Proko (Free, mostly teaches anatomy and how to draw people. But does have art talks and teaches the basics.)
Marc Brunet (Free but he does have other classes for a cheap price. Use to work for Blizzard and teaches you everything)
Aaron Rutten (free, tips about art, talks about art programs and the best products for digital art)
BoroCG (free, teaches a verity of art mediums from 3D modeling to digital painting. As well as some tips that can be used across styles)
Jesse J. Jones (free, talks about animating)
Jesus Conde (free, teaches digital painting and has classes in Spanish)
Mohammed Agbadi (free, he gives some advice in some videos and talks about art)
Ross Draws (free, he does have other classes for a good price. Mostly teaching character designs and simple backgrounds.)
SamDoesArts (free, gives good advice and critiques)
Drawfee Show (free, they do give some good advice and great inspiration)
The Art of Aaron Blaise ( useful tips for digital art and animation. Was an animator for Disney. Mostly nature art)
Bobby Chiu ( useful tips and interviews with artist who are in the industry or making a living as artist)
Sinix Design (has some tips on drawing people)
Winged canvas (art school for free on a verity of mediums)
Bob Ross (just a good time, learn how to paint, as well as how too relax when doing art. "there are no mistakes only happy accidents", this channel also provides tips from another artist)
Scott Christian Sava (Inspiration and provides tips and advice)
Pikat (art advice and critiques)
Drawbox (a suggested cheap online art school, made of a community of artist)
Skillshare (A cheap learning site that has art classes ranging from traditional to digital. As well as Animation and tutorials on art programs. All under one price, in the USA it's around $34 a month)
Human anatomy for artist (not a video or teacher but the site is full of awesome refs to practice and get better at anatomy)
Second part BOOKS, I have collected some books that have helped me and might help others.
📚Here is my list:
The "how to draw manga" series produced by Graphic-sha. These are for manga artist but they give great advice and information.
"Creating characters with personality" by Tom Bancroft. A great book that can help not just people who draw cartoons but also realistic ones. As it helps you with facial ques and how to make a character interesting.
"Albinus on anatomy" by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Great book to help someone learn basic anatomy.
"Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer and Robert Beverly Hale. A good book if you want to go further in-depth with anatomy.
"Directing the story" by Francis Glebas. A good book if you want to Story board or make comics.
"Animal Anatomy for Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger. A good book for if you want to draw animals or creatures.
"Constructive Anatomy: with almost 500 illustrations" by George B. Bridgman. A great book to help you block out shadows in your figures and see them in a more 3 diamantine way.
"Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and expand" by Burne Hogarth. A book that shows how to block out shapes and easily understand what you are looking out. When it comes to human subjects.
"An Atlas of animal anatomy for artist" by W. Ellenberger and H. Dittrich and H. Baum. This is another good one for people who want to draw animals or creatures.
Etherington Brothers, they make books and have a free blog with art tips.
📝As for Supplies, I recommend starting out cheap, buying Pencils and art paper at dollar tree or 5 below. If you want to go fancy Michaels is always a good place for traditional supplies. They also get in some good sales and discounts. For digital art, I recommend not starting with a screen art drawing tablet as they are usually more expensive.
For the Best art Tablet I recommend either Xp-pen, Bamboo or Huion. Some can range from about 40$ to the thousands.
💻As for art programs here is a list of Free to pay.
Clip Studio paint ( you can choose to pay once or sub and get updates. Galaxy, Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android, or Chromebook device. )
Procreate ( pay once for $9.99 usd, IPAD & IPHONE ONLY)
Blender (for 3D modules/sculpting, animation and more. Free)
PaintTool SAI (pay but has a 31 day free trail)
Krita (Free)
mypaint (free)
FireAlpaca (free)
Aseprite ($19.99 usd but has a free trail, for pixel art Windows & macOS)
Drawpile (free and for if you want to draw with others)
IbisPaint (free, phone app ONLY)
Medibang (free, IPAD, Android and PC)
NOTE: Some of these can work on almost any computer like Clip and Sai but others will require a bit stronger computer like Blender. Please check their sites for if your computer is compatible.
So do with this information as you will but as you can tell there are ways to learn how to become an artist, without breaking the bank. The only thing that might be stopping YOU from using any of these things, is YOU.
I have made time to learn to draw and many artist have too. Either in-between working two jobs or taking care of your family and a job or regular school and chores. YOU just have to take the time or use some time management, it really doesn't take long to practice for like an hour or less. YOU also don't have to do it every day, just once or three times a week is fine.
Hope this was helpful and have a great day.
"also apologies for any spelling or grammar errors, I have Dyslexia and it makes my brain go XP when it comes to speech or writing"

Band of Brothers Ages: IRL vs. Actors
Did you know that according to a 1947 study, almost half the men who served in WWII were still under age 26 by the end of the war?
What this is : A (very long) post comparing the ages of the actors in Band of Brothers vs. the IRL figures they are portraying.
Background: Did I need to do this? No. Did anyone ask for this? Also no. Did I do it anyway? Yes.
Disclaimers: This is SUPER approximate for the most part. I based IRL ages off of D-Day unless otherwise noted, and actor ages off of January 1, 2000, the year filming took place (the latter is where the most variation will be because I didn't try to figure out what month filming started). I also didn't fact-check birthdays beyond googling. Most are sourced from the Band of Brothers and Military Wikis on fandom.com, Wikipedia, and IMDb.
I broke them up into rough categories, which are, again, approximate. I know I often forget how young the real life people were here, and this was a good reminder of that. I also found it interesting to see which actors were actually younger than their roles!

Michael Sheen narrates our brand-new show for The Snowman Tour
We are thrilled to announce that Michael Sheen has recorded the narration of The Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle for us, ready for its world premiere on The Snowman Tour, 2024.
“I get to tell the story of The Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle! It's something that I'm really excited to be a part of; the storytelling by David Litchfield is so rich, and the music that has been composed by Daniel Whibley is incredibly beautiful. To be able to contribute to such a lovely family experience this Christmas brings me a lot of joy.” Michael Sheen
Our Managing Director, Rachel Whibley, explains, "It’s been a joy collaborating with award-winning author-illustrator David Litchfield, award-winning composer (and Carrot Productions' very own Artistic Director) Daniel Whibley, and animator Kevin Francis to bring The Bear, the Piano, the Dog, and the Fiddle to life for our audiences.”
"We are hugely honoured that Michael Sheen agreed to narrate The Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle!" Rachel enthuses. "He is a phenomenal actor and an all-round lovely human being, and it has been a privilege to collaborate with him on this project."
Michael recorded the narration last week in a London studio, and we are delighted to be able to share a sneak preview of his beautiful narration alongside the animation and music.
Michael Sheen
Michael is a multi-award-winning Welsh actor and RADA graduate known for his extensive work across film, TV and stage, as well as his charity work. His vast film credits include The Damned United, David Frost in Frost/Nixon, Tony Blair in The Queen, Lucian in the Underworld series, Aro in The Twilight Saga, Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, and Apostle.
Michael’s numerous TV credits include The Special Relationship, Masters of Sex, for which he was also a producer, Good Omens, Prodigal Son, Quiz, and Staged - the hit lockdown comedy co-created with David Tennant. Sheen's acclaimed stage performances include Amadeus, Caligula, and Hamlet. Recently, he made his directorial debut with The Way and played Prince Andrew in A Very Royal Scandal. He created, co-directed, and performed in the ground-breaking three-day live event The Passion in Port Talbot for National Theatre Wales.
The Bear and the Piano - the book trilogy
The Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle, published in 2018, is the second book in the trilogy created by the multi-award winning illustrator and author, David Litchfield. The original book,The Bear and the Piano, took the world by storm in 2016, winning numerous awards, including Waterstones Children’s Book Prize for the Best Illustrated Book of the year. The final book, The Bear, the Piano, and Little Bear’s Concert published in 2020, sees Bear’s international concert days behind him; now a father, his musical adventures continue closer to home.
The Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle - the story
Set in New Orleans with a new cast of animal musicians, this charming sequel is a story about friendship and perseverance. Hector, a fiddle player, and his dog, Hugo, are best friends. They have made music together through good times, bad times and even some crazy times. Hugo is Hector's biggest fan, and when Hector retires, Hugo secretly learns to play the fiddle himself. But when Hugo gets the chance to play and tour with Bear’s Big Band – an opportunity that Hector had always dreamed of – Hector’s jealousy gets the better of him. Will Hector be able to overcome his own disappointment and learn to be happy for his friend?
This heartfelt tale reminds us that there are many different kinds of success. It celebrates the joy and healing powers of music and friendship, and teaches that friendship, like good music, lasts forever.
David Litchfield - the author and illustrator
David is a multi-award winning illustrator and author. David first started to draw when he was very young, creating Star Wars and Indiana Jones ‘mash up’ comics for his older brother and sister. Since then his work has appeared in magazines, newspapers, books and on T-shirts. He has also exhibited his illustrations in both solo and group shows in the U.K, Europe and America. In addition to The Bear and the Piano trilogy, David’s author/illustrator picture books include Grandad’s Secret Giant, Lights On Cotton Rock, T, and Kid Christmas: Of The Claus Brothers Toyshop. David has illustrated books for authors Ross Montgomery, Gregory Maguire, David Almond and Smriti Halls; Miss Muffet, Or What Came After for Marilyn Singer and book covers for Kate Dicamillo, Neil Patrick Harris, Chloe Daykin and many more. David lives with his family in Bedfordshire, England.
“I am so excited that Carrot Productions are adapting my book 'The Bear, the Piano, the Dog & the Fiddle' for their amazing live performance. Seeing my first book 'The Bear and the Piano' come to life on stage in Carrot's previous shows was one of the highlights of my life and I cannot wait to see what these incredible musicians and storytellers achieve with this new book.” David Litchfield
Daniel Whibley - the composer
Daniel is a composer and arranger whose music is heard live each year by thousands of people across the world, featured on TV and all BBC Radio stations. He was commissioned by Aardman to produce orchestral arrangements for all four Wallace & Gromit films and additional material for Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep in Concert. He wrote music for the 2023 CBeebies Prom and Mr Tumble’s Special Adventure with the BBC Philharmonic. His Musical Story of the Gingerbread Man has had millions of views, and his 10-part CBeebies series, Musical Storyland, was recently nominated for a Royal Television Society award.
“I’ve relished working alongside animator Kevin Francis to create a brand new score for The Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle. Expect some very virtuosic violin playing at the performances!” Daniel Whibley
The Snowman Tour 2024
Carrot Productions are excited to be staging not one, but two world premieres for the 2024 The Snowman Tour. Alongside the screening of The Snowman, we will premiere two films featuring two very special dogs - Hugo the violin-playing dog, and The Snowdog himself.
We will be touring to venues across the country this November and December with two different shows. Choose between:
The Snowman™withThe Snowman and the Snowdog or The Snowman™withThe Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle
Our shows feature screenings of the films, accompanied live by full orchestra, together with some other festive musical delights, and even an appearance from the Snowman himself!
You can hear Michael Sheen's charming and evocative narration of The Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle at venues including: Stockport, Oldham, Derby, Buxton, Guildford, Birmingham, Liverpool, York and Chester. See listings for details.
“It's been wonderful to collaborate with the creatives at Penguin and author-illustrator David Litchfield to bring these films to life for our audiences.” Rachel Whibley, Managing Director, Carrot Productions

*if collected or in translation most of the best editions today would not have been available to the characters pre-1940. It’s possible Louis is meant to have read them in their original French in some cases, but it would provide for a different experience. Lydia Davis’ Madame Bovary, for example, attempts to replicate this.
** I've tagged and linked relevant excerpts under quote series as I've been working my way through the list.

Season 3 here
#Iwtv#Its entirely possible these were not in mind at all but given their fame and influence in general its not impossible#there's also a LOT of gothic novels written before Interview with the Vampire (1976) that share many qualities such as unreliable narrators#but I wanted to make sure I was choosing direct inspiration rather than cousins#Interview with the vampire#iwtv season 1#Quote series

15 Inventors Who Were Killed By Their Own Inventions
Marie Curie - Marie Curie, popularly known as Madame Curie, invented the process to isolate radium after co-discovering the radioactive elements radium and polonium. She died of aplastic anemia as a result of prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation emanating from her research materials. The dangers of radiation were not well understood at the time.
William Nelson - a General Electric employee, invented a new way to motorize bicycles. He then fell off his prototype bike during a test run and died.
William Bullock - he invented the web rotary printing press. Several years after its invention, his foot was crushed during the installation of the new machine in Philadelphia. The crushed foot developed gangrene and Bullock died during the amputation.
Horace Lawson Hunley - he was a marine engineer and was the inventor of the first war submarine. During a routine test, Hunley, along with a 7-member crew, sunk to death in a previously damaged submarine H. L. Hunley (named after Hunley’s death) on October 15, 1963.
Francis Edgar Stanley - Francis crashed into a woodpile while driving a Stanley Steamer. It was a steam engine-based car developed by Stanley Motor Carriage Company, founded by Francis E. Stanley and his twin Freelan O. Stanley.
Thomas Andrews - he was an Irish businessman and shipbuilder. As the naval architect in charge of the plans for the ocean liner RMS Titanic, he was travelling on board that vessel during her maiden voyage when the ship hit an iceberg on 14 April 1912. He perished along with more than 1,500 others. His body was never recovered.
Thomas Midgley Jr. - he was an American engineer and chemist who contracted polio at age 51, leaving him severely disabled. He devised an elaborate system of ropes and pulleys to help others lift him from the bed. He was accidentally entangled in the ropes of the device and died of strangulation at the age of 55.
Alexander Bogdanov - he was a Russian physician and philosopher who was one of the first people to experiment with blood transfusion. He died when he used the blood of malaria and TB victim on himself.
Michael Dacre - died after testing his flying taxi device designed to permit fast, affordable travel between regional cities.
Max Valier - invented liquid-fuelled rocket engines as a member of the 1920s German rocket society. On May 17, 1930, an alcohol-fuelled engine exploded on his test bench in Berlin that killed him instantly.
Mike Hughes - was killed when the parachute failed to deploy during a crash landing while piloting his homemade steam-powered rocket.
Harry K. Daghlian Jr. and Louis Slotin - The two physicists were running experiments on plutonium for The Manhattan Project, and both died due to lethal doses of radiation a year apart (1945 and 1946, respectively).
Karel Soucek - The professional stuntman developed a shock-absorbent barrel in which he would go over the Niagara Falls. He did so successfully, but when performing a similar stunt in the Astrodome, the barrel was released too early and Soucek plummeted 180 feet, hitting the rim of the water tank designed to cushion the blow.
Hammad al-Jawhari - he was a prominent scholar in early 11th century Iraq and he was also sort of an inventor, who was particularly obsessed with flight. He strapped on a pair of wooden wings with feathers stuck on them and tried to impress the local Imam. He jumped off from the roof of a mosque and consequently died.
Jean-Francoise Pilatre de Rozier - Rozier was a French teacher who taught chemistry and physics. He was also a pioneer of aviation, having made the first manned free balloon flight in 1783. He died when his balloon crashed near Wimereux in the Pas-de-Calais during an attempt to fly across the English Channel. Pilâtre de Rozier was the first known fatalities in an air crash when his Roziere balloon crashed on June 15, 1785.

Sneak peak for a chapter in progress for my CM original story.
Sam 'I'm allergic to the office' Cooper, aka Coop to friends, called Hotch about a case that Coop's team were working on. It turns out the case is connected to one that Hotch's lovely wife was involved in a few years before.
Coop and Hotch call in a few favours from friends at the DOJ and US Attorney's Office to get certain files unsealed and cases reopened.
It could also have something to do with a conversation that Coop had with Mrs H's past.
There were few days where Kez regretted being the boss of her own unit. And this was one of those days. However, it also gave her the excuse to get out of the office to meet an old friend. Someone she knew personally, and that Hotch also knew – the one and only Sam Cooper. He was still with the Bureau, still had his team of fellow profilers, including Agent Jonathan ‘Prophet’ Simms.
She walked over to the picnic table where Sam was sitting. “Still see that you’re just as allergic to offices as ever, Coop,” she said as she sat on the opposite side of the table. Sam just looked at her, smiled and shook his head. “Just as quick with the one-liners, Winnie,” Sam retorted.
Very few people dared to call her ‘Winnie’, and unless they truly wanted to suffer, they didn’t. Though there only two people within the entire Bureau who dared to call her that horrid nickname – Jack Garrett and Sam Cooper - and could get away with it.
“So, why ask me to meet you here?” Kez said, looking around the park. “Not your normal thing.”
“Easier to see if anyone is watching, though the team are nearby,” Sam answered. He pushed the styrofoam box towards her. “Got you something for lunch, from our favourite Mexican place.”
“You sure know how to treat a lady,” Kez said laughing. “You didn’t ask me to meet you here for a friendly chat over lunch. So, what’s going on?”
Sam looked at her. “Could never get one over on you,” he said. He placed a flash drive on the table next to her drink. “All the files are on there. Cruz got a call from the Director and asked that me and my team look into a case a few weeks ago. At first, it didn’t look like much, but then we came across something.”
There was a pause. “Something that links back to a case you were involved in – Francis Michael Milberg.”

Here is a list of all time favorite marvel and dc sagas among the biggest crossover list to see who is the baddest of them all or is it too close to say whom is the heavy weight champ of super hero lore?
Which would you vote for as the best
A) Deadpool
B) X-men Including X-men Days of Future Past and all the trilogies which X-men was the fav as we saw the rise of Professor X and Magnetto whom were a pretty damn good duo. They never got Gambit right until thank god for Deadpool once again saving the day.
However the clash of Deadpool origins as one describes his creation from a lab project gone wrong hence the first fight of Wolverine Origin and Deadpool in X-men Origina and the more current version of his timeline in which actually FRANCIS would not of been the object of hate much like wolverines hate for the Trucker in his original Wolverine Origins. Deadpool would have then been even more a foe of Wolverine but Wolverine maid it difficult for that Deadpool to even be a side note
Logan was maybe one of my stand alone Wolverine movie best thou and they were good to use that in the current Deadpool saga.
We all know what new Deadpool did with that montrasty of the old Deadpool in Deadpool 2
C) Iron Man was my favorite over the Cap America’s and really Cap got shorted a movie to make a saga as after Winter Soldier we were already in the Civil War and Avengers rise of Ultran
We had to get Buck’s story first then the Falcon was launched with the more recent 2025 Cap America.
D) The Avengers and nothing is as good a build up to End Game and the most iconic foe titan Thanos.
E) I ll take the Dark Knight my fist DC saga and yeah I am biased that went against my youth as I was a kid during my the Michael Keaton saga of Batman as well as Val Kilmer was my era of becoming a super hero movie fan along with original Superman movies with Christopher Reeves
F) I must not forget Blade
G) Guardians of the Galaxy
H) Spider-Man all of them Toby Andrew and Tom all rocked the shit out of that Spidey role I think they all great.
I) and they should have their own category Into the Spiderverse Across the Spiderverse and we know the end of this Saga is upon us in the near future
J) Thor as we do not have Loki either if we don’t have Thor
K) As well as Wakanda forever and the Black Panther saga
L) Man of Steel Batman vs Superman and Justice League I thought Man of Steel was the best but the other two didn’t make my cut for all time in my mind.
M) Dr Strange and all of his Multiverses of Madness
N) Venom one was awesome 2 I didn’t see yet but the upcoming Venom movie in the fall looks pretty good.
O) Antman was extremely great and
P) Hulk and only the Incredible Hulk not Eric Bana and Ed Norton was my preferred hulk but Ruffalo was a nice addition but he sort of was a stretch for me to be as good as Norton’s portrayal I was upset with the Hulk John Woo version and if you were around the hype was as bad as when we saw Godzilla in 1999 well actually a re vised Godzilla that was a far looking different Godzilla than the Godzilla we always saw growing up.
Q) Aquaman never really interested me but I guess we must include
R) Wonder Woman and 84 and we know she appears in Justice League as well as Batman vs Superman
S) Shazam not a big fan here but I got give respect that his series is better than anything in this next choice
T) Fantastic Four it’s a shame and hopefully they get it right with the next adaptation of Dr Doom who besides Thanos was really a bad dude in which took all Four and. Silver Surfer to take down.
U) Harley Queen as well as the Bird-of Prey and Suicide Squad
V) Spawn this needs a revision but I didn’t mind the OG.
W) Blue Beatle just saw it and it was a good start
X) Daredevil sorry Ben and double sorry as casted as Batman and that too was two strikes for Mr Afleck
Y) The Punisher
Z) Ghost Rider
Now the last few here technically didn’t make the Saga criteria but along with Logan even though it was an end but not for ever end .were decent hopefully to something that could have been even better if they did the adaptation better down the road. The Punisher series is a series I will have to revisit as well as the Flash but the Flash just could never get that mass fan fare as much as any other DC character I still think Superman or Batman is an always better draw for audiences which is a shame but it is the reality. And maybe it could have caught up to Spider-Man success but it really never launched as much as the future for DC moving forward.
If you want to vote leave your top two or three in the comments or reshare with the gif or charachter of choice if you choose to do so and thank you for voting and might of even forgot someone on this list but I think besides Flash Gordon fans people should be satisfied with the choices.
#best superhero of all time#the goat#best modern marvel saga#best dc saga#joker#the dark knight#deadpool 3#Superman#Batman

Brainstorm (William Conrad, 1965)
Cast: Jeffrey Hunter, Anne Francis, Dana Andrews, Viveca Lindfors, Stacy Harris, Kathie Browne, Philip Pine, Michael Pate, Robert McQueeney, Strother Martin. Screenplay: Mann Rubin, Lawrence B. Marcus. Cinematography: Sam Leavitt. Art direction: Robert Emmet Smith. Film editing: William H. Ziegler. Music: George Duning.
The vertiginous Brainstorm starts off in one direction, with the sadistic industrialist Cort Benson (Dana Andrews) gaslighting his employee, Jim Grayam (Jeffrey Hunter), who is having an affair with Benson's wife, Lorrie (Anne Francis). But then it turns in another direction: Benson may be trying to make Grayam think he's going mad, but Grayam may actually be insane. He plots an intricate scheme to kill Benson and get away with it, and he almost does. It's a whipsaw premise for a thriller that in the hands of Alfred Hitchcock might have been a classic. Unfortunately, William Conrad was a better character actor than director, and he doesn't quite bring it off. Part of the problem is that Hunter is a little too handsome for the role and doesn't balance the attractiveness of Grayam with enough darkness: We ought to feel more ambivalent about the character from the start. The script has some distracting inconsistencies of plot and character that a more sure-footed director might have overcome, the way Hitchcock covers up the plot holes in Vertigo (1958). There are still some good performances, especially from Viveca Lindfors as a psychiatrist who plays her own ambivalent role in Grayam's case. I think it's the off-balance narrative that has allowed Brainstorm to develop into something of a cult film after its initial rejection by the critics.

Chapter 1
Boston, Massachusetts April 4th 1937
The tiny specks of dust basked in the glowing sunlight that peaked in through the open window, curtains drawn back.
A small thud was heard in the room as yet another shirt was added to the growing pile scattered around the uncarpeted oaken floor. The culprit responsible for the discarded mess was a young boy, rummaging through a thin closet in the corner of the room. His hair, a messy blonde colour, bopped in and out of view as he continued his thorough search.
A small sound of triumph sounded from the boy as he leant back onto his knees, an off-white button up shirt in his grasp.
He gave the shirt a quick sniff, checking it’s cleanliness. With a quick shrug of approval he shrugged it on over his undershirt and began buttoning it up.
The door to the room, a rainbow of browns, was pushed open with a slam into the already defaced wall to the side of it, an indent which broke away the white paint from the wall was visible to anyone who happened to look.
“Ma says to hurry it up Mikey,” a slightly older girl spoke matter-of-factly, she had blonde locks which were braided and fell over her shoulder. Her eyes, unlike the boys hazel, where a deep chocolatey colour and held a level of maturity his lacked.
Mikey mock-glared at the girl and stood up, “yeah yea-” he stopped mid-sentence and analysed the girls appearance. She wore a clearly quite expensive pale pink dress that went just below the knee with white frills and makeup dusted the girls face. A smirk played at his lips as he raised an eyebrow, “and who are you dolled up for, Huh?…that fella from down the road you’re always hangin’ bout with?”
The girls cheeks reddened, “his names Robert..and maybe I am, what’s it to you?” Her eyes where narrowed in a glare that Mikey could tell, from being on the receiving end of many snarls from his sister, was forced.
With a shrug of his shoulders he answered her, “nothin’ just curious..”
He watched as she seemed to be debating something in her head before she opened her mouth, “I need to make an impression okay, there’s loads of pretty gals that go our church.”
Mikey looked up from doing his tie, “so?”
“Jesus Mike..” she mumbled, “I’m thirteen now! Aunt Clara says she was scoping out boys at my age”
He rose a brow, “wha? Since when did u care what that old bat says- OW! What was that for?!” He rubbed his arm, attempting to soothe the stinging sensation.
“Don’t be rude Michael! She’s the one who bought be this dress anyways, I’ve found she’s quite interesting.”
“God Esme, you even sound like the woman! don’t let ma hear you saying stuff like that, you know she hates that Claras guts!”
“Ma knows aunty bought me this for your information! She says it was kind of her!”
Mikey found himself rolling his eyes at his sisters bragging tone.
Before he had a chance to reply a voice called from somewhere downstairs,
“OI WOULD YOU TWO HURRY IT UP, WERE LEAVIN SOON!”
“Just- get ready Michael.” She left before he could respond.
He finished up his tie, which was loose around his neck and tucked his shirt into the waistband of his pants.
Grabbing his shoes from the floor, he checked his reflection in the window. With a thrown he licked his finger and rubbed at the mark on his cheek.
“MIKEY!”
“Yeah, yeah. I’m coming!” With a huff he made his way out the room. The stairs creaked as Mikey jogged down the stairs, missing steps as he went. As he reached the bottom, a woman who looked to be in her mid-thirties was stood with her hands on her hips in front of him.
“Michael Francis what have I told you about jumping down those stairs?”
Mikey felt himself cringe at the use of his middle name, “sorry ma.”
Suddenly, a small girl with identical blonde hair to Mikeys appeared at his mothers side and was looking up at her with big pleading eyes.
“Ma! Can I sit next to Mikey in the car? Oh please mammy!!” The child tugged on her mothers coat.
“I thought you wanted to sit with your sister?”
“NOOOO!” The girl shook her head before sticking out her tongue, “Esmes just gonna end up talking about that Robbie fella! She always does!”
Mikey smirked at the girl, “come on then Flo, you can sit next to me eh? We’ll talk about whateva’ you want.”
The girl beamed up at him and grasped his hand, and he felt himself being tugged away by the small girl. He heard his mother call something about wearing a coat so he grabbed his from the coat hanger on the way out.
Esme was already in the car with their older brother Johnny, who got the privilege of sitting in the drivers seat as he had just learnt how to drive but in Mikeys opinion his brother wasn’t the best at it. He’d never say that to his face of course, unless he wanted a swift smack to the back of the head.
He watched as Flo stepped on her tippy-toes to open the car and he quickly got in, landing in the seat next to Esme while Flo sat next to him.
Mikey helped his little sister with her seatbelt just as his ma got in the car, “right John, try not to crash okay?”
Johnny only scoffed feigning offence, “I ain’t gonna crash alright?”
“I wouldn’t be so sure,” Mikey turned to his sister as she continued her teasing, “Pa told me you nearly crashed into the sweet shop down near our Clara’s?”
John turned to look at the three in the back with a raised eyebrow, “hey shut yer trap Esme, what you butting in for?”
They’d made it to the church thankfully all in one piece, though there was a little incident with a dog in the road but Mikey had decided to let it slide..for now. The minute he got out the car, he’d whipped his head around after hearing a familiar voice call his name.
A boy the same age as Mikey, jogged towards him with a boyish grin on his face.
“Alright Tommy-boy?” Mikey greeted once the boy was close enough, he was slightly taller than Tommy but not enough for it to feel uncomfortable when they stood together.
“ m’ fine.” He blew a piece of brunet hair out of his eyes, “me sisters are driving me up the wall though, never been happier to get out of that car I swear.” Tommy was the oldest of 5, having 4 sisters and it was a known fact to Mikey that he despised it with every fiber of his being.
Mikey looked back over at Tom when he leaned in, “me n Harry Crilton are planning to go town if you wanna come?”
“Wha’ now? Me ma would kill me if she knew I was skipping Tommy.” Despite his tone, Mikey was already on board with missing out on church, it was boring anyway and the benches always made his back ache afterwards.
Tommy only shrugged with a grin, “then I guess you better not let her find out?”
He stared at the boy for a moment but Thomas only returned it with a raised eyebrow. He caved after a few seconds of the back and fourth looks.
“Fine.”
They’d done this enough times for Mikey to know the drill. He’d go to his ma, tell her he was gonna sit at the back with Tommy and that they where going to go to the pier afterwards and he’d just walk home, and like always his ma would tell him to be back by supper time. If you asked Mikey it was a full proof plan.
