This show knows how toxic people (mostly men) actually behave. Ben and Harry both ask why people are angry with them, when they know full well why people are angry with them.

This is so accurate to these kinds of toxic manipulators. They always throw responsibility for any issue back onto the person they hurt. It's a way to make the other person look like they're "making a fuss" when they're actually trying to raise valid issues. And in real life, it's often effective.

Our culture doesn't like it when people "make a big deal out of nothing", even if (especially if) that "nothing" is actually seriously toxic behaviour. Especially especially if the person being called out is a cishet white dude. And Harry and Ben and David know this.

When Imogen breaks up with Ben, she refuses to play the game. She refuses to let him set the terms of the conversation, definitely refuses to reassure/comfort him the way women are expected to. Instead, she explains exactly what's wrong. So he lashes out and calls her a bitch (you know you've gone too far when Harry's calling you out!). She refused to play the game the way she was supposed to, and insisted on holding him accountable. We know he doesn't actually learn anything - the next day, he's blaming Nick for "ruining his life" - but sometimes the only thing you can do with people like Ben (and Harry and David) is refuse to engage and leave them to deal with their shit on their own.

Honestly, this representation of toxic people (men) is way too real. I say I love it, because it's well done, but it's hard to watch because of it.

My bi king Nick Nelson saying to Imogen that it's stupid that there's a gendered division and they can be friends normally and it doesn't have to be a problem sleeping in the same room is so refreshing... and obviously when you're bi that idea is just even more stupid because if you have theoretically the ability to be attracted to all genders what do you do, do you stop having friends in general because of that idea...???? Also I loved the parallel that they did by making them talk to each other about their experience with heteronormativity because they can relate, I love their friendship so much ❤️❤️❤️

the lack of misogyny in heartstopper is so fucking refreshing. all of the girls in the show just LOVE each other. no jealousy. no cattiness. no competitiveness. elle, tara, darcy, imogen, and sahar are all just vibing together. in a world where literally every single tv show has women being pitted against each other, it makes me so happy to see full love, solidarity, and support amongst these leading ladies.
