in all this talk about the Girlbossification of Princess Peach

i think we need to talk about the Girlbossification arc of the legendary Princess Peach parody character, Princess Bubblegum

pretty and pink? check

food themed names? check

constantly getting kidnapped? check

hero has to keep rescuing them? check

like i cannot understate how in the early seasons Princess Peach is set up as a direct parody of Peach and her archetype. and man they lay it on thiiiiick for the will-they-or-won't-they with her and Finn.

now that said, from the very beginning, the AT writers realised they'd probably need to give her more agency and personality in a sustained narrative. Her Thing was being a scientist. Specifically a mad scientist

like literally the first episode was her accidentally causing the zombie apocolypse in her attempts to resurrect the dead

but around seasons 3-4, she starts to undergo... a shift

no longer is she a sweet plucky kid. instead, with the reveal/retcon that Princess Bubblegm is actually hundreds of years old and the literal founder of the Candy Kingdom. she's obsessed with the concepts of legacy and immortality, and her drive to achieve both leads her to more and more awful things.

she is revealed more and more to be a fascist dictator, ruling her nation with an iron fist, spying on her own citizens and having literally committed genocide on her own creations.

her character arc turns into a story of her learning to, uh, stop doing all of that

also she ends up dating her hot rocker half-demon, half-vampire ex and it's rad

THAT'S how you girlbossify a character
