Putting stats, powerups, weapons, etc. aside? Yeah Bowser and Eggman are about to have a rotten day.

Bowser’s a big brute who constantly tries to present himself as the baddest dude around, and Sonic’s love of trash talk and carefree attitude would just take so much of the wind out of his sails. He’d make a big boast about how he’s the King of Awesome, and Sonic would have like ten different insults based off of that one line alone. The more they interact the more and more pissed Bowser would get until it just turns into an extended Looney Tunes skit and Sonic just tricks Bowser into falling off his own castle by the end of it.

Eggman’s a showman. He’s dramatic, flashy, and loves getting the chance to banter. Mario on the other hand is mostly just silent, aside from a few “Wahoos” or talking to his bro in Italian. Eggman would be trying so hard to get Mario to engage with him because dangit he’s prepared an entire list of witty insults only for Mario to just shrug them all off and just keep chugging along and bopping his machines. By the time Mario’s taken down Eggman’s latest robot with his face on it, he’s just left seething.

In essence, Bowser and Eggman just get clowned on while Mario and Sonic enjoy the new change of pace.

Random headcanon: the reason that Peach and Bowser don’t seem to get a lot of respect in some Super Mario games is because the Mushroom Kingdom is kind of a rural backwater and isn’t terribly important or influential politically, so people tend to regard Bowser as a C-list villain for being so hung up on such an insignificant conquest. Nobody really expects Bowser to be a serious threat – that would be like expecting a guy whose main claim to fame is repeatedly failing to conquer Wyoming to be a serious threat – so they get taken by surprise every single time.

Princess Peach for sure

But not really in a way that she just one day happened upon it. She’s the main spectator of their pining asses, since she observes their battles from wherever she’s being kept (most times the classic lil cell above the arena), and she also spends a good amount of time with both.

I do think, however, that she is the main matchmaker. Like she’d be the one giving both lil hints, without outright saying it, and she probably strikes a deal with Bowser, smt along the lines of:
