#satosugu#sooooo if you're wondering why “кохання” and “любов” (in comic in the vocative case) are both translated as “love” there#it's bc there are two words for love in ukrainian#“любов” can be used for anything you love — animals. country. friends. parents. your partner. food etc#but “кохання” is used only for romantic relationships#so basically you can't say “I `кохаю` (verb) my mom”#you have to say “I люблю (verb) my mom”#but you can say both “I `люблю`” and “I `кохаю`” to your partner#although “кохання” is a stronger and more intimate word#that's why Satoru calls Suguru his love and then again but even more intimately#that's why i didn't translate it as usual but added the text separately#bc I like this detail#gojo satoru#geto suguru#jujutsu kaisen#for people who saw the post in the first five minutes - I'm so sorry the tags were mixed up

i think my biggest road block with studying korean, and probably just languages in general, is that if a word's meaning can sort of change depending on if it is paired with a positive or negative verb i CANNOT use it unless i can parse out a more direct translation that actually captures the thought process behind it
i can't just remember it has two uses and move on
#like there's a particle that means still or yet depending on the verb#and i COULD NOT for the life of me get my head around it until i finally put it together that yet is just 'still not'#im having that trouble rn with a particle that means also or even#because 'also not' is not turning into 'not even' in a logical way#especially with where it's applied in the sentence#this is why it's great that my bestie studies japanese because it's usually the same structure and she is WAY less stupid

I mean like “He” and “Him” are the same word (im)#“they” “them” and “their” are all the same too (dem)#theres also a plural you which I always enjoy#it has a lot of notabke similarities to spanish esp. jn the different “to be” verbs#which is cool bcs I wld usually thnk it wld be omitted from a pidgin and creole#it does have spanisha and portuguese jnfkuence but considering its mainly english and west african languages it makes me wonder if#WA languages also have that equative abd locative “to be” verb

I don't care what any grammarian says, a 'snort' is not the right word for a soft exhalation through the nose to covey amusement. A snort is a harsher sound, or at least one that involves some vibration of the sinuses to give it that rougher sound.
I'm sorry. But it's the identical level of sound to an inward sniff, like if you're scenting the air. So it's an outward sniff. I know it can be argued that sniff always means inward. But language evolves, and I'm pretty sure that whenever I've seen "she sniffed" used in fic I was able to contextually deduce whether it was meant to be an outward puff of air or an inhale.
Plus, we do also call it 'sniffing' when someone is being dismissive about something, and that sort of emoting is often paired with an outward puff of air.
And so (with the bona fides of a bachelor of linguistics, English teacher, fiction writer and professional editor) I believe that 'to sniff' has evolved to include the outward passage of air in common parlance.

Friendship ended with google sheets, now filofax is my best friend
#i’ve been tying to come up with a system for verb conjugations#like recording all the verbs i’ve encountered in spanish and their conjugations. just in present tense for now and then i will learn#past and future and any other cases or tenses i may need#and i did buy a dedicated language journal (which i’m really enjoying using. it has habit trackers; lots of space for notetaking and doing#textbook exercises; sections for vocab lists and to write out/give examples of grammar rules; journal prompts for writing#in your target language etc) but it only has 48 verb conjugation tables#i have already encountered 77 different verbs in some form or another and recorded their infinitives so that i can table them#even if i’m just focusing on the present tense right now i do not have enough space and i don’t want to clutter up the rest of my note pages#with just conjugation tables#so i needed a system and at first i was going to do a spreadsheet but then i was like realistically i will spend WAY too long on the layout#and i don’t think i’ll actually use it that much because google sheets is so fucking awkward on my phone#i’d have to pull my whole laptop out just to look at this spreadsheet. it won’t be fun. it’ll seem too much like hard work#so i thought okay. what do i actually want from a verb conjugation system. some form of organisation for sure. colour coding#the ability to move stuff around if i want to#so i’m just using my filofax and various pens#it’s a personal size filofax so i can fit two verbs per page plus a couple of sample sentences using the verbs#i am SO much more likely to grab this and use it; especially if i keep it with my main language journal#and i can always add new pages. or if i run out of space i can take out verbs i’m confident with now and replace with verbs i’m trying#to learn. (i’m starting with just the most essential verbs. since that’s the ones i’m usually finding anyway in A1 content)#i’m really happy with this idea tbh. i don’t know if i already said that#personal

I have had a sword for a little less than 24 hours, and already I have driven off a man with it.
#i'm on a language exchange app#i only message other women#but if a guy dms me and asks a language related question i don't mind answering and will have conversations#it's usually business men who tell me up front that they are married and want to know the difference between two very similar words#or random teenagers who try to hold conversations in extremely broken english before getting tired and giving up#from time to time someone tries to get a little too chummy and at that point i just ghost them#so today someone dmed me and after chatting for a bit he asked if i could send him a picture so he could verify that i was a real person#and i get that people are out there pretending to be very different from who they really are...i get that#but my guy#we were talking about verbs four seconds ago#pull yourself together#...now i ALWAYS ignore requests for pics#of any sort at all#however#the newest picture on my phone was one of me#With The Sword#and the temptation was greater than i could withstand#so i sent him that#and he blocked me#XD

I just started learning Thai so I’m interested. What is the difference between jing and jingjing? On your tags about favorite Thai words
oh! so in Thai, repeating an adjective turns it into an adverb.
in this case, jing is an adjective that means true or real or honest, and jingjing is an adverb that means really, trully, honestly. they're just my favourite Thai words because I like the way they sound lol.
my other favourite is ning, which doesn't have a perfect English translation but that you might recognise from My Engineer. it means cool as in (a person who is) cold, distant, or aloof, or alternatively calm and self-controlled. it's often used sarcastically when describing other people. ningning is an adverb that means something like carefully or calmly - you hear people saying "ningning!" to tell someone to calm down or take more care. kind of like "chill out!" in English lol. I like these because their English translations are so interesting! and because of RamKing and ai'Ning, obviously.

heard the word "unhorse" for the first time today and it's immediately on my list of favourite english words
#instinctively i thought it means 'get off a horse' but the fact that it's more 'be thrown off a horse'? epic. love that english has that#also lbr it does sound like it'd be the opposite of horse or something being de-horsified or sth like that#it's just instinctively strange bc it's one of the few examples of english words that change class when you add a prefix#as in usually a verb will stay a verb when you add a prefix (agree -> disagree) but here a noun becomes a verb#as you can see learning about languages at uni is unleashing my inner language nerd#noah's stuff
