how to do things offline

either on your personal hard drive (just because it’s an app doesn’t mean the information is stored in your device) or on paper. I’m not saying the collapse of the internet is imminent, and I’m not suggesting we do everything completely without technology, or even stop using it until we have to. (to be clear, I also don’t think the internet will just blink out of existence, suddenly stop being a thing at all; rather I think it might continue to lose its usefulness to the point where it’s impossible to get anything done. anyway) but some people may have forgotten how we got by before the internet (I almost have!), and the younger generation might not have experienced it at all.

I figure most people probably use the internet mainly for communication with friends and family, entertainment and creation (eg. writing), and looking up how to do things, so here’s how to do those things offline:

First and most importantly, download everything important to you onto at least one hard drive and at least one flashdrive! files can get corrupted and hardware can get damaged or lost, but as long as you keep backup copies, you have much-closer-to-guaranteed access versus hoping a business doesn’t decide to paywall, purge, or otherwise revoke your access. I would recommend getting irreplaceable photos printed as well

download and/or print/write down:

anything important to you - photos/videos, journals, certificates, college transcripts

contact info - phone numbers and/or addresses of friends/family (know how to contact them if you can’t use your favourite messaging app), doctors (open hours would be good too), veterinarians if you have pets, and work

how-to’s - recipes (one, two), emergency preparedness (what do I do if… eg. I smell gas)

other things you might google: cleaning chemicals to NOT mix, what laundry tag symbols mean, people food dogs and cats can and can’t eat, plant toxicity to pets

and know offline ways to find things out - local radio station, newspaper, a nearby highway rest area might have a region map, public libraries usually have a bunch of resources

also, those of you who get periods should strongly consider not using period tracking apps! here’s how to track your period manually

free printable period tracker templates (no printer? public libraries usually charge a few cents per page, or you can recreate it by hand)

moving on to entertainment, you can still get most media for free! it’s completely legal to download your favourite movies to your own personal hard drive, you just can’t sell or distribute copies (not legal advice)

movies: wcostream.tv (right click the player) - the url changes every once in a while but usually redirects; I recently noticed that it’s hiding a lot of movies behind “premium,” so it may or may not work anymore | download youtube videos

music: how to get music without streaming it | legal free downloads

games: steamunlocked.net - doesn’t have every game and can be slow to update, but very reliable

books: free online libraries | legal free downloads

otherwise passing time:

active outdoor games

for road trips (social verbal games)

for when power’s out

for sheltering in place (not all offline, but good ideas)

board games (often found at thrift stores)

ad-free customisable games collection (mobile)

read, write, draw, or whatever your craft is, sing, dance, clean, reorganise, take a bath

go outside - excuses include napping (if safe), eating, reading, finding cool plants/animals/rocks, playing with the dog

places to go include:

zoos and museums can be surprisingly cheap

parks and nature preserves

library, mall, or game shop

and a few miscellaneous things for good measure:

time budgeting | household management

satoru is the first one to publicly launch your relationship - it's a soft launch of you staring up at a waterfall he'd taken you to for your second date. your face isn't visible, and compared to satoru's infamous status, you were relatively unknown so only those who knew the two of you well could identify you properly. he posts that on his story with mitski's 'my love mine all mine' playing in the background and creates a new highlight for you (he titles it 'my girl').

he doesn't post often on his main account but, when he does, nine times out of ten, it's you or a photo you'd taken of him (his spam is daily pictures of your life together of course). for the first time in his life, satoru has found love through his own means and not through his parents so he adores to showing it off (much to his father's dismay - matching onesie pics with his girlfriend wasn't exactly screaming 'heir to the gojo fortune').

although satoru's instagram isn't public, his affluent position in society and popularity does mean that he has several thousand followers to his name (many of which being female). it makes the two of you giggle when one of these said girls tries to slip into his dms despite the fact his account is a literal shrine of his love for you.

in response, he'll add the girl to his close friends and post a picture (usually of the two of you kissing, sometimes just you) to his close friends. once the girl has seen it, he'll block her off of instagram and all other socials she may have contact with him on.

satoru is devoted to you and he wants the whole world to know it.

If you are an artist who regularly posts art to tumblr, you may have received DMs/replies from accounts who are either asking to use your art in a mural because a client wants it or a message asking you if you take commissions (even if you have a post that would answer that question) before requesting you to draw their pet/family member.

These are actually known as scam messages/asks and were originally mainly spotted on deviantART/Twitter (X), Instagram, etc. You get these if you use certain tags as these mainly blank blogs are usually watching them for new artists to target and con money (or time) out of. These are never real people wanting art from you and are always scammers who have no interest in paying you for your hard work.

One of the most common things is that they will never look at your commission sheet or read your TOS, and will avoid answering any specific questions you may have since they’re not here to talk. Their talking is just trying to flatter you (claiming they love your art) and to make you think you’ll be getting a lot of money for little work. Unfortunately, these blogs do not want to pay you and they will not give you the funds no matter how much it is.

These kind of scammers will ask for your email and then send you a fake PayPal email claiming they sent you money but there was a problem and you need to ‘upgrade’ your account to receive the funds. This email is not officially sent by PayPal and is made to scare you into thinking something has went wrong. Do not worry. It is not a real PayPal email. It is a fake one.

Keep in mind these scam blogs will not use the payment methods you already offer. Their task is getting your email then trying to get your personal information.

If someone’s offering to pay you $300+ for a simple drawing of a generic dog took off Google images, be wary of the account and ask them questions first. If you feel like something is off, cut contact and report them immediately before blocking them.

If you drew the art anyway, just edit the drawing to have a block of text saying the commissioner was a scammer and then advertise your commissions!

Always have a clear Terms of Service around payment options and do not let high payments trick you into drawing for scammers.

I am post this with the art tag as it relates to art and the current situation of artists over here now getting the same scam messages that deviantART users get. Please share this post to your art friends.

okay i've decided im going to assume this is done out of ignorance and not malice, since we've lost a lot of tumblr ettiquette that used to be ubiquitous over the years so most people probably just dont know

i know we all joke about tags and search being useless on tumblr, and most of us use tags mainly for internal blog organization - but some of us do use the tags traditionally

if i track a tag, the reason is because the things in the tag are things i want to see. i track 'love and other fairytales' because i want to see people talking about my fic, and i know not everyone is comfortable DMing me. i track 'batmom' because i like reader-insert fic where the reader gets to adopt the robins, sue me

now, if you tag something in a post where youre talking badly about it, criticizing it, saying it sucks or even just vagueposting about how much you dont like it - well, now you've put it on hundreds of peoples dash who follow that tag because they like that thing

a ship, or a trope, or a fic, anything you use the main tag on your post, you are putting that post directly in front of all the people who are going to be most upset by it. you're doing the internet equivalent coming uninvited into our barbecue to critique our food.

dont be that guy! tumblr filtering will catch any mention of the ship in the body of the post, so if people have the tag filtered and blocked, theyre not going to see it anyway. youre not protecting anyone, you are using the tagging system in an impolite way

Abt the Orcatstra stuff

TLDR: I've looked through their posts as well as others and I can't find any proof they did anything wrong. Orca making NSFW art, saying they don't like a ship and blocking people who like that ship is completely normal and you shouldn't take it personally.

People in the DSAF fandom (mainly Tumblr) are freaking out about a take Orcatstra made on shipping Jack with Harry, Jake and/or Rodger, allegedly harassing people who ship them, one case being running a 14/15-year-old off the website and making NSFW art, mainly gore.

About the ship: I think Orcatstra's take is completely understandable. "Oh but the phone can leave" and "Oh but he treats them well in the Good ending" doesn't matter. At the end of the day, whether he treats them well or not is completely irrelevant. Jack can choose at any time whether they live or die. When he fires them, they get murdered. He has power over them and that is a power imbalance that a lot of people are going to be uncomfortable with. In cases like Dave, Matt, Steven or Henry, if things don't go well between the two, they have the ability to leave with no fear of something bad happening to them. The phones on the other hand, could get fired (die) if they're not on Jack's good side with just a simple phone call. Even if they left, they literally mention Afton Robotics hunting down escaped phone guys and a simple phone call telling AR one's gone rouge is all it takes. Doing this after getting pissed off by them or whatever, is completely in character for Jack to do (especially legacy). People bring up that Jack treats them well in the good ending but how about all the other routes? Especially in the Legacy routes, Jack treats them like shit and actively uses this power imbalance against them on multiple occasions. People bring up Davesport as a retort to this, bringing up how utterly devoted Dave can be, but Dave when treated like this usually fights back or distances himself away from him, neither is something the phones can do without fear of getting killed. At the end of the day, it all comes down to how you headcanon Jack to act, but the power imbalance is definitely enough to put a lot of people off. Also, as a POC myself, I don't think them saying it felt like "Owner x Slave" to them, was racist.

About the blocking: Blocking people is something people are allowed to do for whatever reason they like. If someone posts content you don't like, the normal response most people have is to block them. Whether you feel the block is "deserved" or not, doesn't matter. Hell, sometimes I block people over a single post or comment they make because I simply disagree with it so much. Blocking people is completely okay under literally any circumstance.

About harassment: I have found no proof of this. Seriously. I've looked through multiple people's accounts, including Orca's and have found nothing. I'm even seeing people ask for proof and being told the person has none. the dsaf confessions account keeps getting brought up as proof of someone who got harassed but looking at both their posts and Orca's, from what I've seen, no harassment happened. From what I can tell, all of this is a complete misunderstanding where Orca talking about not liking the account got interpreted as Orca bullying them. If they don't like them and want to post about not liking them, they have the right to do that.

Edit: Just remembered this so I’ll quickly add it now, people are shouting at orca 4 “harassing a minor” but they’re a minor themselves.

About NSFW: They're allowed to draw it. DSAF is an NSFW series and therefore has A LOT of NSFW topics, subjects, scenes and characters in it. If someone wants to draw that, they have the right to. If you don't like it, block them. Some people are saying they should tag their gore art and while I personally agree with that, if they don't want to, they have every right not to. It's their blog and if you don't like it, just block them and move on. "But what if a child sees it" on Tumblr, you can only see what you search up or are personally interested in, a child shouldn't be looking at DSAF-related content in the first place because, again, it is an NSFW series.

Overall, my thoughts on the matter are... *drum roll*

It's not that serious and the block button is free. If you don't like someone, what they're doing, what they're posting, block them. It's that simple and getting blocked doesn't mean anything. This situation, as well as others like it, are making me fear that most of you aren't old enough to even know what DSAF is, let alone be in the fandom.

the last few days had felt like hell for haerin, as y/n’s new friends would always take her away from the kang. it enraged haerin, all she wanted was to talk to her best friend— or whatever they were now. unfortunately danielle noticed the distance put between the two and introduced haerin to her other friends, pitying her.

but haerin really didn’t mind, the group make her feel happy and it was nice to have other friends than danielle and y/n. danielle had introduced haerin to hanni, minji, and hyein. hanni and minji were a year above them, already in highschool but their bond with the rest of them was strong nonetheless. they all would hang out after school, the eldest two (mainly hanni) complaining about how annoying student council was. minji had somehow convinced hanni to do it, leading to a whole lot of complaints from hanni.

and then there was hyein, she was in the year below danielle and haerin but still managed to be the tallest in the friend group. she always teased hanni for her height, which caused a lot of fights.

but in short, haerin felt content with her new friends. she was happy she found people that would stick by her, even if y/n wasn’t one of them.

there wasn’t any bad blood between the two until y/n started walking home again, a day neither of them would ever forget.

the cool fall breeze calmed haerin, she was glad summer was finally coming to a close. the temperatures were always too much for her.

haerin was sitting patiently in front of her school waiting for her friends to come and walk home with her, smiling at the sight of them emerging from the front doors.

hyein and danielle seemed to pick up their pace when they saw haerin waiting for them, causing haerin to drop from her ledge.

“hi haerin!” hyein waves, haerin waving back.

“hi hyein! are we waiting for minji and hanni to come walk with us?” haerin asks, danielle shaking her head.

“i guess they’re going to some store tonight to hang out with some student council people.” danielle responds, receiving a weird look from hyein.

“you sure they aren’t just ditching us to spend more alone time?” she asks, groaning at the small punch danielle gave her. haerin was laughing quietly, making hyein laugh too.

“hyein!" dani exclaims.

"sorry, anyways lets go." hyein says, beginning to walk when a voice calls out.

"haerin!" y/n calls out to the girl, not noticing the way her face drops.

"hi hyein, hi dani." y/n says, waving to the two girls who look at her confused.

"i was wondering if i could tag along since i'm not taking the bus today?" y/n asks, she noticed danielle look to haerin the expression on her face unreadable to y/n but she just ignored it.

"um, sure." haerin states, turning around to start walking.

y/n felt confused at her friend's behavior, the short answer wasn't unusual for haerin but it felt weird. she chose to just brush it off, trailing behind the three girls.

the walk was silent for y/n, being different from when she rode the bus. her basketball friends always were loud, woonhak and jaehyun always fighting about something. but these three were conversing quietly, something about their highschool friends.

y/n had never felt this alone before, especially with her so called best friend right in front of her. had it really been that long since they talked? y/n didn't even realize, her sports consumed her life so much. she truly didn't mean to distance herself from haerin, but it was hard balancing so much stuff at one time. y/n's daily life consisted of going to school, basketball every other day, and then practicing with her friends on weekends or just hanging out.

she would hang out with haerin if she asked her to, but the invitation never came, y/n realized why now. even if y/n hadn't yet, haerin had moved on from their friendship it seemed. it probably had to do something (everything) with her new life.

unfortunately for haerin and y/n, danielle and hyein's houses were before theirs on the block leaving the two in an awkward silence. y/n wanted to speak to haerin, but she didn't know if she would even respond. she spoke up anyways, wanting to know what was happening with haerin.

"so how have you been rin?" y/n asks, walking beside the girl now.

"i've been fine, how is basketball." haerin responds simply, her eyes never meeting y/n's.

"it's been good, just really busy. do you wanna hang out sometime?" y/n asks, her expression full of hope.

"i don't know, wouldn't you be with your friends?" haerin says.

"huh? rin you're my top priority--" y/n starts getting cut off by haerin.

"don't call me that anymore." she says angrily, y/n's heart dropping.

"haerin, you can't just expect me to reach out first always. when have you ever asked me to hang out?" y/n asks, regretting it once she sees haerin's blank expression turn into anger.

"i've tried, so many times y/n but your always with ninging and those stupid boys. they don't want me around you, can't you see that?" haerin says to y/n, furious now with how ignorant the girl was.

"what are you talking about? ningning loves you and always ask about you." y/n says, she had never felt more heartbroken in her life.

"that's the problem y/n, you always say they like me but you never invite me over to do anything with them. are you sure they do? and i don't even get what changed about them, you used to hate woonhak and jaehyun." haerin rambles on, listing every flaw she possibly could.

"rin, i mean haerin. i'm sorry for everything i've just been so busy in general--" y/n starts, panicking now.

"don't talk to me anymore."

"i don't wanna see your face ever again." haerin says coldly, walking away from you moments after.

y/n sat there in the same spot, feeling her body get weaker and weaker every second before she collapsed. tears flowing down her face soon after, she felt like she was in a nightmare. it couldn't be true right?

as if things couldn't get worse rain started pouring down on the girl, ruining her appearance but she couldn't care less.

she just lost her best friend (love of her life) over stupid basketball.

*Sigh* Wednesday is trending again, which means that the kiddos out there are gonna start drama again. Please just stop; this is one of the reason why the show was called cringe a year ago and people left the fandom.

1- You have the right to ship Wyler et Wavier. This is your opinion, your preference and I respect it. So why, mainly Wavier shippers, are suddenly back at attacking Wenclair shippers for no reason at all on Tumblr, Twitter and basically every single social media? What are you, 12? Is this hard to respect people's opinions???

2- Stop shipping Jenna and Emma. I'm almost certain this is the reason why we can't tag Emma on Instagram anymore. Ever since the Chappell Roan videos got out, a lot of people have made weird comments saying that they kissed or that they were on a date. Just stop. Stop shipping real people, or do it but silently. All of this is making them very uncomfortable and it's just direspectful to assume things like that. We just got them back, don't make Jenna delete Instagram again and make Emma disappear from it once again.

This just needed to be said. Just be respectful, it's not that fucking hard, goddamit. And when I mean respectful, I mean towards the fans AND the actors. Don't make Wednesday cringe again. Stop being kids and attacking other fans for absolutely no reason because you can't accept the fact that they don't ship your ship. And stop using the fucking Wenclair hashtag to say trash about them, this is getting annoying.

This is also addressed to, like me, Wenclair shippers. You should respect Wyler and Wavier shippers as well; don't give the bad example. Everyone is free to ship the characters they want, and this without any drama or violence. Just be kind to each others, it's not that hard.
