i agree with this post but i think it kinda avoids confronting what's really happening and why it doesn't work.

in my opinion, it must first be acknowledged that several kinds of sexualization exist, which fulfill different goals and are not comparable.

a form of sexualization which isn't really sexualization, the kind that aims to elevate, justify and flatter the patriarchy and its aesthetics/narratives (men designed to be "sexual" for straight men)

a form of sexualization that serves the sexual interests of the patriarchy (women designed to be sexual for straight men). men being the dominant gender class, this is the cultural product with highest demand. men are incentivized to produce/consume it, women are incentivized to comply with this.

a form of sexualization that serves the sexual interests of oppressed genders which respect the boundaries of the gender power structure. (men designed to be sexual for gay men, men designed to be sexual for straight women, women designed to be sexual for gay women. all within the norms of acceptability, of course.)

a form of sexualization that depicts a character who transgresses the boundaries of the gender power structure and is made lesser for it, to reassert the rules and punishments of the social order ("whores, faggots, dykes, transgenders, sex workers, deviants")

a form of sexualization that is neither perpetrated nor tolerated by patriarchy, which exists on an individual level but not social level (anything made by transgressives for transgressives)

i think it's a bit of a leap to assert that "trying to fight the sexualization of women by sexualizing men" doesn't work because the only examples are type #2 and #4. people do make content of type #3 and #5, these exist! isn't it more productive to analyze why they are failing to be noticed? why the e.g. video game mods that are made, or at least the ones we see, are overshadowed by type #2 and #4 (and to a lesser extent, type #1)?

of course, these are rhetorical questions, i'm kinda beating around the bush here. the reason you can't "fight the sexualization of women by sexualizing men" isn't that all sexualization inevitably ends up being type #2 and #4.

which is to say, the construction of a hypothetical world where our media storefronts present us with a selection of content that "sexualizes everyone equally" cannot possibly be a notable, driving weapon against gender power structure, because it can only be genuinely achieved by fighting and destroying those structures on a material level, outside of media creation and consumption.

emphasis on genuinely achieved. if we don't fight those structures, if we simply intending to fill and expand the scope of the "sexualization of men" box, what's the best case scenario? the box will simply grow to accommodate these expressions, they will be integrated into the power structure, commodities will arise around them. and of course new identities will be forced into marginalization and transgressiveness to fill the vacuum, to ensure the continued existence of the social order.

tl;dr all of this to add: yeah, not only are the people putting cloud finalfantasy in a dress for a laugh not fighting the patriarchy, putting him in a dress because you genuinely want to express your sexuality and hope to see a world with more sexualized men also isn't fighting the patriarchy. as much as we might wish otherwise.

trying to fight against the sexualization of women by sexualizing men doesn't work. when people make mods for video games where they turn the women into bimbos is because they have genuinely lust for them, but when people make mods to give cloud strife a tramp stamp is because they think it's funny. dungeon meshi senshi panty shots aren't fan service, they're jokes. they're trying to make a joke about how funny it is that they are showing this man's panties

worst is that putting a traditional macho hero in bikinis and giving them things that are traditionally associated with women isn't just a joke, it's a transmisogynistic joke. you're pointing at cloud strife with a tramp stamp and laughing at how funny it is that a man has one of these

Hey! I really adore the way you draw textures, as they usually fit with the vanilla art style flawlessly, and wanted to ask for advice. I want to make addons/mods, and maybe a full texture pack someday, but my textures always end up looking kind of flat, lack depth, and look weird when next to vanilla stuff.

Thank you so much :3 as far as advice, I'm afraid I've been doing pixel art for ~15 years now so unfortunately a lot of it is just experience... I do have some tips though! but I am in no place to do a full tutorial at the moment.

Prerequisite: Use paint dot net. It's super beginner friendly, since it's based off of Paint, and it's what has been used for Minecraft textures since the very beginning.

First off, you want to have a block-out palette! For me, it's these 5 colours here:

From here, you'll want to go darkest to lightest; use the darkest tone to outline, then fill in with the 4th tone. Eventually, you'll want to make it so that there are 2-3 outline tones, from darkest to lightest, in accordance to however you're shading. Anything overlapping with the main shape should not use the darkest two tones!

Then you'll want to hit the bright spots not with your mid-tone or your highlight, but with your second lightest tone! This way, you leave room to highlight And shade your highlights. You've effectively made 5 different palettes to use to shade different parts (1-2, 1-2-3, 2-3-4, 3-4-5, 4-5). Whenever you feel like you're ready, switch out this palette for something more in line with what you're doing- depending on what material you're going for, this can happen super early on or way late. Whenever I do something Metallic, I like to switch to a gold palette as soon as possible.

Another thing to keep in mind is minecraft's palette limitations! Generally speaking, try to keep textures to 5-9 colours, filling in between as needed. If you use more base colours, feel free to expand, but do not go over 15 if you can help it. A good rule of thumb for adding additional colours is that you should try to limit them to 3 tones.

When choosing a palette, there's no problem with going with any pre-existing item's colours! In fact, this can be super helpful even when you want to use your own colours, just as a reference.

When you do want to make your own palette, my advice is to choose a strong colour, any hue, saturation in the 60-80 range, value in the 70-90 range. To get strong shading in your palette, drop the value by ~5, increase the saturation by ~5, and shift the hue towards blue by ~5. Do this each time from your base colour. Go in the opposite direction to Increase the perceived brightness. Here, I started with the 5th tone.

Obviously, you can tweak these to your liking; your outline colours should end up a lot darker than this generally speaking, and you might want to ramp all the way up to white for your highlights. You'll also generally want your outline colour to end up with like, max 30 Value & at Full Saturation, with your highlight colour at 100 Value & ~50 saturation if you aren't going for Full White. Lets see what that might look like after changing the most extreme values & then blending accordingly.

At the end of the day, my biggest tips are 1) to look at references constantly in both minecraft's existing sprites and other people's sprites! Take what you like, improve on it where you think it could use improvements. & 2) always zoom out! Even if a texture is perfect, if you've been staring at it too long so up close, it's going to feel weird. Minecraft's most common GUI scale is 2x, so scale the image on your screen somewhere where each pixel is exactly 2x2 and you'll get a good feel for how it'll actually look in-game.

One last tip on a more advanced level: if you're using multiple different base colours, always shift to grayscale very often. Your tones should look indistinguishable in grayscale so that you know that the shapes themselves are strong enough to warrant the multiple colours. This is also very good for accessibility!

I'll offer a slightly different direction though: just sitting by and shaking our heads while people dig their ditches with butter knives for fear of being called a gatekeeper doesn't just undercut the shovel-makers, it causes the indy dev market to stagnate. For every one SirObvious, there seems to be a dozen people who are more than happy to sell butter knives at the sides of the ditches. They even sell butter knives that are kinda sorta shovel shaped! Yessiree, this butter knife lets you play Cyberpunk! That one is for Magical Burst! Call of Cthulhu? Best believe it! Nevermind the fact that these variant butter knives require instruction manuals longer than the actual tools' and get the job done markedly worse! It's safe! It's familiar! It's everywhere! It's Butter Knife!

I don't care what you play at your home table. I'll mourn the misdirected creative energies you might spend on modding your butter knife into a pitchfork, but whatever, have fun... But when you throw money in the mix, that's where I'll say you are causing damage. You are not just ignoring the folks trying to make fresh and exiciting games, you are actively making sure that these pioneers will have a harder time finding their audience over the deafening white noise that is The Butter Knife.

There's a kickstarter project going on at time of writing. It's all about how to have a peaceful, wholesome, heartwarming game with little dragon buddies! No combat at all! That sounds awesome and I'd love to give it a try... It's 5e though. It's 5e without combat. It's 5e without, conservatively, 90% of the game system's rules. That's so backwards, you'd make more progress digging the ditch if you put the butter knife in your pocket and used your hands. Even if the creators didn't want to make their own bespoke system, they could have picked another pre-existing game at random and found better support for a game without combat than 5e. I'll bet you anything that they chose 5e not because it's the best system to support their vision, but because they're devout Butter Knifers or, more cynically, they know that's where the money is.

All I'm saying, when you have some dosh burning a hole in your pocket, throw it at a developer who's making a fresh system. Support shovel makers so we can make some truly amazing ditches.
