I FINISHED THE THING (part 1)!!!
My brother's gf asked me for a sort of book-shaped container to put in her bookshelf as a Christmas gift, so she can put bookmarks and other things inside it. She wanted it to be Gideon themed and wanted me to design the cover, including the Ninth skull and a bone design plus the logo title, also asked for all the skulls of the houses in the spine (this was a lot of work so if you don't like how they turned out, don't tell me) and also wanted me to do the back blurb in the style of my recaps (here's what it says).
It took me longer than I thought it would but here we are, I really hope she likes it. I added felt in the bottom so it doesn't harm the bookshelf and it is less likely to slide or move. For some process description and photos, here's the read more.
I built the base with mdf wood and glued the pieces together, then used cold porcelain to sculpt the book over it. I designed the illustrations and drew them on pencil when it dried, then painted it all (the text for the back cover took a WHILE). Once dried, I varnished and then glued the felt piece in the bottom.

Yesterday I listened to the most recent episode of the Sounds Like a Cult podcast. The guest was a former Waldorf School teacher, and admittedly I hadn't really read much about Waldorf education before this. (I was a Montessori kid, but that's another cult for another day).
The guest, Maggie, describes how she was dismissed from her teaching job by them sitting down with her and giving her a laundry list of all of the infractions she had committed and basically being told she was spiritually unwell.
I *immediately* thought about the last episode of Severance and my mind went racing.
Even just the things I learned about in the podcast were absolutely Severed material. Hyper specificity seeing color, texture, angles, language, their own variety of "professionalism" and even race dynamics (specifically re: Milchick and the paintings). Then there's the eschewing of modern technology, reliance on group-set archetypes, magical thinking, internal mythology, etc. Lumon would probably focus more on specific mathematics for kids along for MDF, but there's also room for art okay etc for kids who would be geared toward say, Optics and Design.
Like.. it wouldn't surprise me if Lumon had a Waldorf-esque classroom somewhere on the severed floor. (See: Miss Huang - definitely gives Culty Private School Kids vibes).
It's interesting to think about, at least for me. Both Waldorf and Lumon are sketchy in their own right, offer a lot of promise around self determination and purpose... But are inherently based around some weird, heavy, and problematic ideologies. The podcast had me weaving violently between "this seems like it could be an interesting take and I could see why they'd be into that" and "what the unholy fuck!" (Much like I do watching almost every episode of Severance, tbh)
Anyway, Amanda Montell (the main podcast host) had a really good book called "Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism" and it's a really good read that lays out some basic structure around some of the cults we interact with in every day life, some of their language patterns, and how people of all kinds get enmeshed with them.

On my Spinning Wheel Bullshit Again. Long rambly post below the cut but know that
1. I'm basically deciding between two options at this point, neither of which necessarily better than the other, and
2. I am longing for a spinning wheel with a fervor usually reserved for regency romantics and have been for almost a full month.
Option 1: Used Ashford Kiwi 2, $300
Pros:
Restored and sold by the guild's Ashford dealer so am confident it works well
Ashford replacement parts and accessories are widely available
It will keep it's value well, I can likely sell it for near the same price if I dislike it
Lighter than the other option
I can have it in my hands in one week, no questions asked.
Cons:
Its lighter because it's made of MDF with a wood veneer, less sturdy than the other option
Nothing unique or notable about the design, kind of boring actually.
Unknowns:
What accessories it comes with (how many bobbins, a lazy kate? Not the cheapest on their own)
Option 2: New JMS Cassandra, $300 or $350
Pros:
Handmade by a semi local SCAdian artisan
Full hardwood construction (sturdy!)
It's fucking GORGEOUS and visually so unique, I'm in love
The $350 package comes with a total of 8 bobbins and a lazy kate (the base wheel comes with 4 bobbins which is nothing to sniff at)
The maker is a friend of a friend and I can basically have someone pick it up at an event instead of paying shipping
Cons
Hardwood, while sturdy, is heavy
I sent an email with questions 3 weeks ago and have not gotten a response yet
If he decides to stop working, replacement parts and repairs are going to get really difficult
The package deal is out of stock despite the individual parts being in stock
Unknowns
HOW LONG WOULD THE WHEEL TAKE TO GET TO ME?! It's anywhere from 1 week to 4 months and I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out which it is
The Same Between Them:
Price. Around $300 was what I was hoping to spend.
Quality. I don't doubt that both of them are well made wheels that would serve my needs.
Shape/Style. Both are castle wheels, double treadle, with pedals that do not fold up and a good range of speed ratios.
Relationship. One is sold by a fellow weavers guild member and the other by a fellow scadian. Both are people I would be happy to support and be sad to disappoint.
Next steps:
On Monday I'll talk to the people who know the wheel guy and ask what the likely time frame is on his wheels. I'm in love with the design but I'm chewing the walls and wasting away over here. Despite potentially being happier with the Cassandra long term, I'm very tempted to just get the Kiwi 2 so that I have something in my hands.

I'm involved in a project that requires casting some residential circular-arch doors out of concrete, one side at a time. I was considering designing the embellishments with digital tools and having them cut with a CNC machine for the mold, but it seems like a lot of trouble and I already know how to design things in the physical world. My question: what did you carve your beautiful embellished doors from, was it expensive, and do you think it'd work to cast a rubber mold from?
That sounds like a really cool project!
The carved panels on the doors I made were made in mdf-board. It's pretty cheap, about the same as plywood, and you can carve it like wood with a multitool - with the right bit, it's pretty fast work! (I talk about the different bits I use in this post.)
As long as the relief doesn't have any wierdly angled deep nooks and crannies, you should absolutely be able to make a rubber cast from it! Especially if you put down a base coat of somewhat glossy paint first, to make all the surfaces smooth and non-porous!
(Mandatory word of caution - carving mdf means a lot of sawdust, and it's a health-hazard to breathe it in. So do it outside, if you can, and wear a mask and goggles!)
The board on the doors is actually quite thin, about 10-12mm - the layered paint helps accentuate the 3D depth of the carvings. If you want a physically deeper relief, it'll be more work to carve it and the mdf sheets are more expensive the thicker they are.
That said, even a relatively shallow pattern can be very striking!
Tumblr media
This divider was carved from 10mm mdf, so the carvings are just a few mm deep, but even without paint, it makes for a pretty effect! 🙂
If you do go ahead with it, feel free to share pictures! I'd love to see what you end up making! 😀
