I FINISHED THE THING (part 1)!!!
My brother's gf asked me for a sort of book-shaped container to put in her bookshelf as a Christmas gift, so she can put bookmarks and other things inside it. She wanted it to be Gideon themed and wanted me to design the cover, including the Ninth skull and a bone design plus the logo title, also asked for all the skulls of the houses in the spine (this was a lot of work so if you don't like how they turned out, don't tell me) and also wanted me to do the back blurb in the style of my recaps (here's what it says).
It took me longer than I thought it would but here we are, I really hope she likes it. I added felt in the bottom so it doesn't harm the bookshelf and it is less likely to slide or move. For some process description and photos, here's the read more.
I built the base with mdf wood and glued the pieces together, then used cold porcelain to sculpt the book over it. I designed the illustrations and drew them on pencil when it dried, then painted it all (the text for the back cover took a WHILE). Once dried, I varnished and then glued the felt piece in the bottom.
#luly reacts to tlt#gideon the ninth#my crafts#long post#the locked tomb#tlt#I also finished the enterprise bridge for the tree but I'll show you that maybe tomorrow#I was going to include a photo of the back with all the text#but 5 pics was too much lol idk

I'm involved in a project that requires casting some residential circular-arch doors out of concrete, one side at a time. I was considering designing the embellishments with digital tools and having them cut with a CNC machine for the mold, but it seems like a lot of trouble and I already know how to design things in the physical world. My question: what did you carve your beautiful embellished doors from, was it expensive, and do you think it'd work to cast a rubber mold from?
That sounds like a really cool project!
The carved panels on the doors I made were made in mdf-board. It's pretty cheap, about the same as plywood, and you can carve it like wood with a multitool - with the right bit, it's pretty fast work! (I talk about the different bits I use in this post.)
As long as the relief doesn't have any wierdly angled deep nooks and crannies, you should absolutely be able to make a rubber cast from it! Especially if you put down a base coat of somewhat glossy paint first, to make all the surfaces smooth and non-porous!
(Mandatory word of caution - carving mdf means a lot of sawdust, and it's a health-hazard to breathe it in. So do it outside, if you can, and wear a mask and goggles!)
The board on the doors is actually quite thin, about 10-12mm - the layered paint helps accentuate the 3D depth of the carvings. If you want a physically deeper relief, it'll be more work to carve it and the mdf sheets are more expensive the thicker they are.
That said, even a relatively shallow pattern can be very striking!
This divider was carved from 10mm mdf, so the carvings are just a few mm deep, but even without paint, it makes for a pretty effect! 🙂
If you do go ahead with it, feel free to share pictures! I'd love to see what you end up making! 😀

Hobby adjacent post:
I really want to get into the gaming side of Warhammer 40k, so I decided I needed a way to store and transport my miniatures.
I remember having a lot of fun with this when I was a kid. I got a big thick sheet of furniture foam and cut holes in it with a holesaw bit. Then, I stuck the foam to thin sheets of mdf and packed layers into a massive toolbox. I think this alternative solution is a lot more elegant but less fun...
If anyone is curious, I used a 4L A4 Really Useful Box and a sheet of 0.75mm self-adhesive rubber steel ferrous sheets from The Magnet Shop. It was about £10 for one sheet and one box. The sheets stick really well. This box will probably hold 60-80 infantry models.
The sheets I got were receptive to magnets (not magnetic). I got 2mm x 5mm round N45 magnets for the bases, but I'll definitely need stronger/bigger magnets for anything bigger than a termagant.

I've been really getting jnto this whole miniature wargaming thing lately and have been watching a lot of videos about how to build your own terrain, table etc, and a lot of it is based on polystyrene foam. As luck would have it, I found a pile of insulation foam being chucked out from a house nearby (the owners wanted me to take as much as possible) cut perfectly into 2' x 4' blocks. If I got a couple of MDF boards I could easily turn it into a terrained wargaming table with features like hills and rivers cut into it. I grabbed enough to cover a 6' x 4' surface and was on my merry way. Anyway, that is why I am sleeping in a room filled with insulation foam I found on the street. I will not regret this 100% very well thought out impulse grab

Once upon a time I had a toy carousel as a child, but it broke, and I kept the pieces...except the music box. I may not be 100% sure, but I do believe the song was, probably, most likely,Love story. So that's what I used.
So,after feverish crafting and endless winging,I present :
Scarlet Carousel
Yes let me name it that please ;-;
More pics under the cut!
I've been wanting to make this for well over 3 yrs,it feels like a dream come true! Hands on,it took exactly a week, 6-8hrs per day on most days. I made it almost entirely from scratch, except the music box of course (it was a regular one,I made the rotating mechanism) and the horses which are peagasus figured I sculpted over and repainted. I didn't go in with a solid plan,no sketch either, but I did have some plans,which...many of which I ended up changing mid project. There were many places I had to redo, but in the end I'm really proud of it, please have a look!!
I made sure to add stairs for imaginary kids to climb up,a railing of chains so they don't fall off,and a starry sky so when the nonexistent riders look up,they see something nice!
The inner box is made of scrap mdf from cakes, base made of foam board, and upper tent (?) sculpted with lightweight clay (Artista) ,the filigree from resin casts I've made over years, and most other things either craft store trinkets or recycled trash.
I've recorded most of the process, and I'll be making a video! Let's hope it happens soon!

Extinction (2023)
(Acrylic on MDF)
This was SUPER fun to work on! These are technically based on spotted hyena skulls, but I sculpted and distorted them in 3D.

Whilst my hands hurt too much to do fine motor control tasks, I DID still take the time to make myself a painting station.
It's made entirely of scrap and leftovers from things at my last job, so aside from fixings I already had it cost me nothing at all. The base of it is a perfectly good piece of MDF that was part of a pallet that had just been thrown in the trash. The idea that individual people are the ones creating the most waste in this world when businesses throw away the insane amount of resources they do is an insultingly stupid one, but I digress
This has allowed me to paint in the living room, where my monkey-lizard brain is less likely to be distracted by the computer, now that it is out of sight.
I've spent a good amount of time painting the first batch of models that I did already show you - I wasn't remotely happy with them when I posted them, but at the time I just wanted to have finished something. Well, I've gone back at them with techniques I was too amateurish to consider trying before (shading, edge highlights, being conscious of varnish texture, etc) and now I can say I'm pretty happy with them. Comparison pictures will be coming at some point soon!
