This oak post may be one of the oldest pieces of wood-carved art found in Europe.

It dates from around 6,270 years ago and was found near Maerdy, Rhondda, Wales.

It may have served as a marker post of some kind, possibly marking a tribal boundary, a hunting ground or perhaps a sacred site.

Neolithic Axe from Meltham Moor, Tolson Memorial Museum, Huddersfield

The reconstructed haft is based on examples found elsewhere, preserved by wet conditions. These were made from ash and beech wood.
