“ Morris--- ” Jessie called out as she rounded the corner of the courthouse’s hallway, though she stopped in her tracks as she found just the attorney she’d been looking for. She wasn’t alone as expected but rather having what looked like a heated discussion. Or, rather, the man across from her was doing all of the talking while Madeline looked on in... was that discomfort that she saw in her colleague’s face? Maybe he was a client, or a friend, but Jessie didn’t quite take the time to think about it before approaching, a comforting hand falling upon Madeline’s shoulder. “ I’m sorry, this is a closed hearing, ” she informed the man, agitation adorning her voice as she gestured toward the courtroom door behind them. Whether it was the uniform or Jessie’s resting bitch face that provided just the right amount of intimidation, he made a hesitant move to leave the two women alone. Turning toward the brunette, Jessie raised an eyebrow. “ Was he botherin’ you? ”

“How’s my favorite deputy? Keeping the boys in line I hope? Especially Bryce. We all know he likes to take things to the extreme. Really, though, how are you?”
@jessiehxll
“ I sure hope so. Ain’t lettin’ ‘em get off easy, at least, ” Jessie answered, accompanied by a small smirk. “ I, uh... I’m fine. Tired, what with the ongoing investigations, but your coffee’s sure helpin’. How’ve you been, Fi? ”

The way her sentence seemed to end as a question, her voice raising in pitch at the end of the sentence threw him - the man stunned. How could someone not find the sky above them fascinating? After all, it was the final frontier, the dark recesses unexplored by mankind, untainted by human touch. “It is exciting,” he grumbled. “It’s a whole fucking planet that is visible with the naked eye. Or almost at least. Something that is 746 million miles away from Earth is almost completely visible.” He shook his head, grabbing his jacket as Jessie took his keys. Of course she wanted to take his car - it was like she was always gunning for his job. She needed to cool down a little bit, be less of a hothead if she wanted the promotion. “I’m four years older than you Red. By the time I retire, you won’t be far behind me. No promises on the glass though. You’re probably best just letting me roll down the window to look out.”
Bryce’s voice seemed almost defensive as he spoke about the planet, and Jessie couldn’t help the amused look that fell over her features. She was sure that if she were to read about it online she would’ve clicked away within the first few words, but something about the passion behind the Sheriff’s voice could make anyone listen without a second thought. “ Yeah, okay. Pretty cool, I concede. ” Not that she’d be watching the night sky herself any time soon. “ Ah, you forget I don’t age anymore. I’ve been twenty seven for two years now and I will be for a good while. Don’t worry, Sheriff, I’ll let ya have your run, but as soon as the badge is back up for grabs... ” Jessie trailed off with a shrug. It had been a dream of hers since she was young, after all. Later was always better than never. After one self indulgent toss and catch of the keys, Jessie made her way toward the door, not bothering to check whether or not Bryce was on her heels. After working with him for so long, she simply knew that he was. “ Windows down, got it. Any more special requests, Spaceman? ”

“What, the coffee or the mug?” Robin asked. This tone wasn’t teasing, but borderline mockery. “I spent half the night patrolling the woods, looking for the victims of the Murder Mystery Dinner, never to see a single officer out there with me. Don’t feed me one of those ‘We’re doing everything we can’ lines. I know that means 'I don’t know what I’m doing.’” Should he have confronted her at the station? Maybe. But when he’d seen her sitting in the cafe, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity.
Jessie opted not to answer Robin’s question, rather sending an unamused glance in his direction instead. If she was having a bad morning already, the sight of his face was a sure sign that it was about to get worse. Could she not just catch a break already? An obligatory eyeroll came over her in response to his accusations. “ If you must know, we had eighty percent of our officers on shift spread out all over town and the other twenty percent on call at the station. Sorry if we thought you and your rangers could handle the woods, we’ll be sure to offend you by underestimatin’ instead of overestimatin’ next time. ”

Bridget hesitantly stood behind the chair, pulling it back further at the open invitation and taking a seat across from the other. “Not much of a early riser?” She wondered already guessing the answer, not that Bridget was an early riser herself.
Jessie simply shrugged in response to the other’s question. “ More of a night owl myself. ” That was more of a recent development, actually. Up until a couple of years ago she’d been as much of a morning person as they got.

Tiana had spotted the vivacious girl in the corner during her shift, recognizing the bouncy red curls and slight pep in her step. Smiling at the other, Tia took the seat across from her that Jessie was so gracious to push out for her. “Why did you think I was coming over?” she asked, setting a to go cup in front of the other girl, matching her own.
The sound of her friend’s voice accompanying the sight of sweet, sweet caffeine brightened Jessie’s expression almost instantaneously. “ Tia, you absolute saint, ” she commented, lifting the lid of her drink to be sure it was made how she liked it. Of course it was. She’d expected nothing less. Popping the lid back on, she tapped the cup as if to point out the paper-ness of it. “ We goin’ somewhere?”

Returning with the promised coffee, Madeline slid them across the table and nodded to Jessie’s question. “Yes I would.” She responded with a small smile, wrapping one hand around her own tea mug and bringing it to her lips. “I’m waiting for the person to offer enough evidence to file a report for the station to begin the investigation. But when the case comes in, I’d like to be called in. You know I specialize in these cases. I’m not asking to be the front-runner, I’m asking to be part of the team and help.”
Jessie slid her empty mug out of the way, reaching immediately for the sugar packets at the edge of the table and fixing up her coffee as she listened to Madeline’s proposal. She had to admit, it didn’t sound like too bad of an idea--- she must really care about the case, after all, if she was willing to travel so far out of her comfort zone for it. “ I don’t know you specialize in them, actually. You’re not givin’ me any details. ” Her voice took on almost a teasing tone--- after all, no conversation would be complete without giving the attorney unnecessary shit. “ Look, it’s... not my decision. But if you care about the case so much, I can put in a good word for ya. ”

rumor has it that you've got a thing for your partner
“ That’s disgusting. And wrong. I don’t even get– why would– I’ve never had a thing for anyone, anywhere. It’s none of your- you have- the nerve, the audacity, Bryce is my boss, technically. And he is terrible, face-wise. And how- how- do I know, frankly, that you don’t have a thing for him? Maybe you do. Maybe you’re trying to throw me off? Hmm check and mate.”

“I have a question or two.” Madeline agreed, folding her hands and finally showing a crack in her armor. “I may have a case coming up that will go straight to the investigators. Naming no names for the person’s sake… I want in on the prosecution side. I promised I’d help, and I’d like to personally work the case. Half and half with the DA.” Lifting her hand, Madeline tried to pause the officer. “Let me get you that other coffee before you respond. Please.” She said, already standing and about to move back to the counter.
Jessie simply took a long sip of her coffee in response to the other’s words, mentally preparing herself to listen to Madeline’s voice. Though, she had to admit, her voice wasn’t near as annoying when it wasn’t arguing to keep someone out of jail that Jessie had worked relentlessly to put there in the first place. She wanted in on the prosecution side. That statement was enough to pique the deputy’s interest, leaning further across the table only to be met with a shush from Madeline. That was fine--- Jessie could use the extra few minutes to wrap her head around the situation anyway. She managed to down the rest of her current cup by the time Madeline returned, much more welcoming of the attorney’s presence this time. “ So... you wanna work with the DA, huh? ” she summarized, sending an expectant look in the other’s direction.

Her smile was insufferable, Bryce knowing it was because she’d caught him out, called him out on his lie. He huffed, glancing away from her, not wanting to see how pleased with herself she was. “Yeah, almost. Like you see something a little brighter than usual and then with a scope you can see the full thing.” She seemed to stare at him for a moment, Bryce afraid to look at her directly, but watching her out of the corner of his eye. Sighing, he considered the offer - she was giving him a way out. But his pride was wounded, Bryce not used to be called out. “It’s fine,” he muttered, turning back to her. “But you’re driving. I’m gonna look out the window if nothing else.”
He was avoiding her gaze, Jessie could see that, but it did little to falter the triumphant look written into her features. If anything, her smirk only grew more knowing that she was right and that Bryce was flustered by it. It truly felt like her greatest accomplishment to date. “ Sounds... exciting? ” she tried, though she wasn’t quite sure what the difference between that and a star was. Sounded like complete bullshit to her, but then again, she’d never quite understood any of the Sheriff’s astronomy stuff. Maybe it was just something you had to see to believe. “ That’s the spirit, Spaceman, ” Jessie teased, grabbing immediately for Bryce’s keys as if she’d been waiting for that invitation the entire time. They could take her car, of course, but there was nothing like driving a vehicle with big bold letters reading ‘ sheriff ‘ across the side. “ Just don’t fog up the glass. That thing’s mine as soon as you get old and retire. ”

Smiling at the woman’s warning yet invitation, Madeline placed her own mug at the table and then sank into the opposing chair, offering the redhead a warm smile. She and Jessie didn’t always see eye to eye, and nor were they expected to. But Madeline sought out the times when they weren’t on opposite sides of a case to extend a greater attempt at friendship. “Should I buy you the next three cups, then? I don’t want you falling asleep on me, Jessie.”
As Madeline took the seat across from her, Jessie finally glanced up from her mug, eyes landing on the attorney’s expression. She couldn’t help but raise her eyebrows in response to the other’s smile, wondering why she should be so happy to be in her presence. Whatever. If she wasn’t at such a loss for sleep, she might’ve even returned the smile, but alas--- the disappearance cases were eating her alive. “ Well, I can’t exactly turn that offer down, now can I? ” Free coffee. That was always a win. “ Why? You got somethin’ important on your mind? ”

Faye shook her head, “Nothing. I seriously can’t remember a thing. It’s just black.”
Jessie remained silent for a moment, not entirely trusting it. Then again, that was what all of the victims were saying. With a sigh, Jessie continued. “ Okay. Do you remember anything beforehand? Anything that felt off about the party? Or someone there, maybe? ”

Jessie had hidden herself in the far corner of the busy cafe, allowing her hands to be warmed by her coffee mug when she felt a shadow hover over her. “ Don’t talk to me until I’ve had at least three of these, ” she commented, though she nudged the chair across from her out with her foot. An open invitation.

“Oh uh… yes? I’m Faline. I prefer Faye though. What’s this about?” The girl paused. She tried so hard to think back to what happened but just… couldn’t. Everything that happened within the past forty eight hours was just blank. “I don’t know how I got here. I don’t remember what happened. I was… I was talking to Seth at this party that my friend Marie put on and then all of a sudden I’m waking up here.”
“ Faye, ” she repeated, nodding once as if to commit the name to memory. The night of Marie Chat’s party had been nothing less that exhausting for her, having expected no more than a harmless party stunt. But this? It may have been too much for even the deputy to wrap her mind around. “ Okay, so you were at Marie Chat’s party, ” Jessie confirmed. “ There’s nothin’ you can remember between then and now? It’s just completely blank? ”
