8 February 2025
I've been spending too much time at my desk, I had to move the studying to my bed (although I keep getting off it to pace the room while murmuring chemistry things to myself lol). My to-do for today is just to revise all of spectro (atomic, UV-vis, IR, and Raman) and maybe at least read some of my MDF notes bc I'm seriously behind with this one
#i (unfortunately) did not get paid to say this but have you ever had alpros cherry yogurt#my mom and i have been obsessed with it lately it's so delicious#mine#op#studyblr#chemblr#chemistry#studyspo#study motivation#study blog

All four of these pieces were made from an old computer desk. You know... the cheap MDF ones with black laminate.
'Blue Bill' ~ Reminded me of 'Mr Bill' from the old Saturday Night Live episodes. Carved and pigmented.
'Recircled' ~ I just used a carving but to cut through the black laminate and colored with pigments. A sort of double panel panel.
'Seg-man-ted' ~ Same desk... just cut out the shapes to crudely emulate a face. Held together with metal rods connecting each segment. Dyes and gold paint.
'Blast' ~ This panel was first shot several times with a 12 gauge shotgun. Then the blasted areas were carved around. I dropped some dye on each of the buckshot and textured the rest of the panel.

behold my new archsketchbook!
details: 15.5x21.5cm (roughly A5), 450gsm Hahnemühle rough watercolour paper, 2mm MDF board covers with antique dragon print, bound with a combination of coptic stitch and French link stitch with green linen ribbon.

some process pics and bits under the cut:

welcome to my desk, by the way!
i think my favourite part of making sketchbooks is picking out the materials. seeing what i can use from what i have, how it plays with what i can find at the shop, maybe something there surprises me and inspires me to change direction.

this time i wanted something light and springtimey, without strong contrasts, but the dragon print paper at the shop swept me away.

the shop only had big sheets of 450gsm watercolour paper, which meant single page signatures. i don't think i've ever painted on paper this thick. ended up only having 9 signatures (36 pages), but that's okay because i have a problem with finishing sketchbooks that are too long anyway.

initially i was considering buying a large metal pipe, sharpening it and sawing it in half, using it as a curved guillotine to cut out the arches, and while i do have the resources to do such a thing, if i'm only making one sketchbook, it's a bit overkill. (and unless someone commissions me (hello!), i don't think i'll be making more.) so i ended up cutting everything by hand and using sandpaper to even it off.

surprisingly, the arches were no trouble at all - i cut half-inch strips into the arched side and folded them over each other. while you can feel the corners by touch, visually it's a pretty smooth curve. i think the mix of starch glue and PVA glue (thanks @vociferal for the tips!) on the surprisingly durable dragon paper made for an easy process, as the paper stuck immediately, dried quickly and didn't leave any nasty residue.

i had doubts over whether to leave the ribbon on top of the cover or tuck it under the endpaper, but in the end i preferred the clean cover look. it does bulge under the endpaper (see the last pic before the cut) but i'm okay with that - it hints at the process, making it clear that this here is a unique object that was made in a way that hasn't been endlessly optimised by precise machines, but crafted by human hands, striving for perfection but inextricably, lovingly flawed.

now, if you'll excuse me, i have to go and fill this beauty with freaky swampcore paintings...

Trying to dehorde the office a little and I did make some progress but..... There's still a lot to do but I've hit the "want to screm" stage so I guess I'm done for the moment.
There are fewer boxes in the way, a big pile of stuff that needs to go downstairs, and I need to vacuum but the boy decided to lay down in the middle of the floor and go to sleep RIGHT NOW??????? At 6:30 am??????
Sigh.
The biggest offenders are: Craft supplies, doll stuff, empty shipping boxes, and dust.
Either way, better is worth celebrating in order to keep momentum, and it is better.
I think I'll frog the little mat I made to put under my office dolls because I messed it up a little, and frog the hair band and hat I made with the same yarn so I can make a bigger mat in the end. Having that mat there has helped me not put random stuff on that surface a little bit. Like, I just looked over and there was a RH shoe box and the tape dispenser on there, and I took them off. The yarn mat puts a color that I see less as "place to put stuff" than the bare, white MDF counter top
I will never be a tidy person unless I get meds or something, and that's not going to happen because that shit costs money I don't have.
I will have to clear off the desk again sooner rather than later since I ordered a new all-in-one printer. I've been using an old HP combo forEVER and it's been, apparently, much more cooperative than most HP printers but I'm both tired of having to replace the whole color ink cartridge when one color runs low, and the cartridges ought to go legacy soon enough considering how old the printer is.
I ordered one of those that you fill little tanks from bottles instead, an Epson Ecotank something something. The biggest negative I'm seeing in reviews is with trouble trying to print via bluetooth, but it has USB and I always hard-wire my devices and disable bluetooth/wi-fi.
There's a little time for that, though. I'll keep picking away at it for now.

Hobby adjacent post today. Finally got around to rebuilding my workspace.
I previously had wooden, tiered paint racks for storage, I replaced them with clear nail polish racks.
I mounted them, and a pegboard on some MDF screwed into the back of my desk.
Much more room to work with. I find I always have more motivation to work after I’ve tidied my workspace.

The Many Mattresses for Beds
What question can you ask a person that will never be answered yes? Are you asleep? If you're hearing "no" quite often then that is an unfortunate sign that your mattress isn't as comfortable as it should be. In this article we'll take a look at the many click here to learn more variety of mattresses for beds.
A customer walks into a store and asks the clerk behind the desk about a mattress for their bed. The clerk says ok, then asks "do you want a spring mattress?" To which the customer replies "Oh, well... I actually need it for the whole year!" This little joke is all in fun but there are many new types of mattresses in the marketplace for beds that many consumers are unaware of. These new trends in mattress bring many interesting features to the typical bed and are definitely worth taking a look at. In this article we'll examine some of the new trends in mattresses and what they can offer your bedroom.
Innerspring mattresses for beds. These mattresses are among the most traditional and classic designs in mattresses. Spring mattresses provide good support and are used well throughout the world. The first thing you're going to come across is coil count. The coil count tells you how many coil springs are used throughout the unit. This of course varies from mattress to mattress. Typically a queen mattress with a coil count greater than 390 coils should be suitable for every night sleeping as opposed to a guest mattress. Different layers of foam and batting will be used at the surface of the mattress which will make the mattress firm or plush. Pillow top models are also available that make the mattress quite soft. Most innerspring mattresses feature a fabric quilting sewn into the mattress. There are many brands of innerspring mattress available at many different price points. You should find one that is comfortable, made for everyday use and is within your budget. Major brands include Serta, Sealy, Simmons, Spring Air and King Koil to name a few.
Viscoelastic mattresses for bed frames. Introduced over twenty years ago these mattresses started out quite pricey and were only in select higher end homes by people who could afford them. Today, there are many brands of viscoelastic mattresses and can be found in a much greater number of homes. Viscoelastic has unique properties in that the mattress is made up of material called visco cells. These cells have a memory and when they sense heat the material conforms around the heat. Your body supplies the heat and the mattress molds around you. This is different than innerspring mattresses in which you lay on top of the mattress. With visco mattresses you actually feel the mattress around you. Coverings for these mattresses can range from fabric, bamboo, cashmere or any number of materials. In recent years some customers have commented that the mattress becomes hot while laying on it. Tempur-Pedic which is a leader in viscolelastic mattresses has since created a more breathable covering to disperse heat. Its not immediately clear if other manufacturers of these mattresses have done the same. Viscoelastic mattresses have been promoted as helping those with bad backs find greater comfort. Tempur-Pedic and Dormia are just a couple of the many brands available.
Waterbed mattresses for platforms. Popular in the 1970's waterbed mattresses are still available through select specialty stores. These mattresses of course feature water as their primary filler. Special platform frames are made that accommodate these mattresses due to the heavy nature of the mattress. In recent years the waterbed industry has come up with new innovations in design. There are several types of waterbed mattress. The hard-side waterbed mattress requires that in be surrounded by a wood/MDF system to ensure that the mattress is contained. Soft-side waterbed mattresses feature a sturdy foam around the perimeter of the mattress that allows it to keep its shape. The soft-side is the most popular waterbed mattress today. The biggest complaint about waterbeds were movement. Motion sensor technology and or tube or bladder systems were created to help reduce this movement so as to provide a more comfortable sleep.
Air mattress beds. Often thought of as that blow up mattress your grandmother uses for guests, air mattresses have actually come a long way. Select Comfort is one of the fastest growing companies offering air beds. The air mattresses feature chambers that pump and release air in and out of the mattress to help the user find the perfect firmness or softness for their sleeping needs. Referred to as finding your "Sleep Number" which starts from zero to 100. Because each user can adjust their own side each mattress provides the user with their own unique comfort. Some individuals have said that they can't get the mattress firm enough for their needs so its best to try one out first to make sure it's right for you. Aero Bed is another type of inflatable guest mattress.

Menchi Chrimbo for those people that celebrate/tolerate it!
My lovely brother got me a Warlord Games paint stand. It can't hold all my paints but its going to be used as storage for the ones in use on whatever happens to be on my desk at the time.
As a bonus, there were a shipload of extra pieces that get popped out and it's solid MDF so they'll get used for terrain.

Dr May Schmidt [FNAF, Renegade AU character]

https://www.deviantart.com/paigelts05/art/Dr-May-Schmidt-FNAF-Renegade-AU-character-962406323
Published:May 14, 2023
Dr May Schmidt is a character in my AU, the Renegade AU. She fixes any medical related potholes. May is the older sister of Mike Schmidt, and she is a doctor. Known for being a pioneer of medical science in the field of treating the posessed, and this renown is really her brothers fault for getting himself posessed by that dumb kid who posessed that dumb bear for a week. With her full name being May Marion Schmidt, she'd been on the receiving end of Maid Marion jokes since people started talking to her. So guess what she called her clinic. If the Maid Marion Clinic had to be described, it would be as a sterile environment with white walls, green curtains, and an MDF skirting board that goes up to an adults elbows in a futile attempt to make it feel homely. The only signs of a life outside the clinic that May's office bares is a Toy Freddy plushie that sits on the desk. Even then, the plushie itself doesn't bode for much out-of-clinic life, as the plushie is old, at least six years old, bearing the resemblance to that dumb bear whom was once posessed by the kid that co-habits her brother's body, and most of the calls that May responds to personally are at Freddy's, so if anything, it's just a bit of ancient history of the place that causes most of her patient's problems.

... There’s no branding on this thing just a really shitty grout job with floor tiles and some hard water crusties. Whole bathroom really does need pulled out and redone but that’s money, time, and functional body of which I only have time.

I was talking with Scott about furniture and even though this isn’t what we were talking about, exactly, I spent like $300 a few years ago on 3x small dining tables with benches (they’re steel and mdf) and set up the benches as shelving here and there.
Those three on top, and I don’t know if you can see the one under the left-side desk, then there’s one bench just kind of floating around the room here and there because I don’t know what to do with it, and the last one is actually in the top of the pantry in the kitchen to add a shelf for small appliances we don’t use as often.
My point being that small dining tables with benches can be repurposed into work desks with shelves pretty easily.
