"whoa there pal! looks like your favorite web service is getting hit with enshittification. you should try this NEW PLATFORM, that is only mildly alike in function, has no stable source of funding, and is being ran by some people in their home office as a hobby. this will be a long-term solution for you that you can build a community on, i promise!" <- sentiment i see a lot on here lately. like. lol

Starting a new sketchbook is daunting, so I like to make mine feel like a home before I make a single drawing. Here’s how I like to do it…

I first paint the flap with a keyhole motif to remind myself of the great treasure trove of creativity possible within the pages. And lest I ever feel like the pages are inaccessible to me, I need only to open the front flap to find a spare key.

Then the first page is stamped with my Ex Libris bookplate.

And then the next several pages are dedicated to my hand-painted calendar pages, resolutions for the year imported from the last sketchbook, checklists for projects, and recipes that I use often but still haven’t memorized.

And after all that work, suddenly the sketchbook doesn’t feel so new and pristine any longer! I’m tired of these preparations, the sketchbook feels like it’s fully “mine,” and my hand itches to draw.

But while starting a new sketchbook feels wonderful, the most satisfying part of all of this might be adding my old sketchbook to the bookshelf with her sisters.
These books are over 400 pages, and they usually take me about a year and a half to fill. May this new sketchbook feel even better in my hands than the last!

Such a big, big universe and you only gave yourselves the tools to speak about a tiny portion of it.
happy 10th anniversary to Wolf 359! here's some art I did for this occasion (and waited like two months to post it). this is an illustration of Am I Alone Now?, the first episode I listened to in the distant year 2017. this podcast is very dear to me, please listen to it if you haven't already!
(no text version is under the cut)

i've been tagged by @wanderer-on-the-steppe to share 6 photos from my phone!

all my life is now is woodworking and woodrelaxing (we don't talk about the officework on account of no trees and therefore, nothing of interest)
@hieronymousbob @caracalled @slaviclore no pressure but let's have a bit of whimsy here!

sketches from the latest expedition, two days spent in the old quarries searching for Carboniferous plants. +35C during day, the loudest ever thunderstorm during the night (sleeping in a tent in the middle of that storm near the water was kinda insane). physically it was a challenge, but i'm so glad i didn't stay home last weekend. best way to spend a few days after b-day<3 and FINALLY i've heard the Eurasian golden oriole!! they're so sneaky
