Posters from this week's episode.
Even if they are only visible for a second (this time), it would be a shame if they were completely overlooked.
I love you, Mara!
More about some of them.
Morts sans sépulture – a Jean-Paul Sartre's play (1946). The play caused a scandal, with reports of female spectators fainting at the premiere.
Le Café du Cadran – a 1947 French drama. A young couple from Auvergne, Julien and Louise Couturier buy a café in the heart of Paris. The capital soon has a detrimental effect on them as Julien falls in with bad company and Louise flirts with violinist Luigi and develops a taste for expensive things.
Les Frères Jacques – a French vocal quartet active from 1946. The band was famous for combining singing and mime.
Quai des Orfèvres – a 1947 French police procedural drama about a theatre actress (lots of jealousy involved). It's also the name of the waterfront in Paris close to where S2 was filmed.
La Kermesse rouge – a 1947 French historical drama. It's about a rivalry between two painters that concludes with an incident based on a real-life 1897 fire in Paris.
Les Enfants du Paradis – a 1945 two-part French romantic drama set in the theatrical world of Paris. Lots of jealousy here too.
Trio Raisner – if you want some contemporary harmonica music.
*There were also a lot of political posters, which makes sense given the end of the war and the French elections in November 1946.

do you have any recommendations for favorite french-language poetry? esp written by women?
Yes, sure! We might not have the same tastes (I like nature poetry mostly, and good old lavish alexandrine verse—I find the predictability of it very soothing) but here are excerpts of poems by 13 French-language poétesses :)
(I wanted to add a few men at the end but I spent too much time on the women, and the French male poets I enjoy are very well-known ones anyway, e.g. Hugo, Mallarmé, Prévert, Aragon... also André Breton's surrealist poetry)
• Sabine Amable Voïart, known as Amable Tastu (1798-1885)
• Alice de Chambrier (1861-1882) (she is Swiss)
• Renée Vivien (1877-1911) (English, mainly wrote in French)
• Anne Perrier (1922-2017) (also Swiss)
• Hélène Dorion (1958 - ) (she's from Québec)
#tumblr's garbage new post editor keeps randomly un-italicising my italics :l#anyway i really like anna de noailles and renée vivien in particular#also marie-claire bancquart whom i discovered more recently!

The girl with a thousand faces : Part 1
Hey guys! hum warning, this is my first fanfiction on Doctor Who. I wrote this one with the tenth doctor in mind. English is not my primary language, so please be indulgent. This fic will be in two or three parts depending on what the general reaction will be :0 So hum yeah. Also in the first chapter, you're given a certain name, but it will not be definitive.
Froggit-
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 1 , Part 2 , Part 3
-------------------------
Your destiny wasn’t what you could call “normal”. For a human at least.
Playing, studying, going to college, finding a job, having a family, and growing old, could be called a winning ticket. You, on the other hand, had to deal with something else for as long as you could remember.
Remembering. Here was something you were good at, something you had done for dozens of years without even understanding why it was happening. All those faces, all those lives you had to leave behind you. A single heart that had to grow again and again, without knowing where it would end up next, what language it would speak, what future it would be.
A miracle some would call it. To you, it was purely a curse. The process of dying, being conceived again, growing up, and remembering your past lives, was getting tiring as the years came by. But here you were once again. And this time, your death had been quite special. Never would you have imagined dying to free a city.
------------------------
Paris was beautiful, it was true. But too many people lived there for it to be breathable. Summer was a pain in the ass, having no air circulating between buildings, and the cramped space of the streets, making the temperature grow higher each passing day. It wasn’t bearable. Breathing wasn’t easy, and there was as much that water could solve.
Today was one of those days. Waking up to windows covered in craft paper to reduce the heat coming in the house, the rod from your old shutters, still in a corner of your room waiting to be saved. A kitchen, a little too small for even one person, and a pan to heat the water. A simple life in a busy city.
The bus had taken its sweet time to arrive, making you late for work. As soon as you entered the small café, you were in for quite a lot.
“Oh! J’ai mis ton uniforme dans l’arrière boutique
oh! Louise! here you are, you’re practically Half an hour late, Naeva was searching for you. I put your uniform in the back
-Ah!
Ah! Thanks a lot, Fély! I don’t know what I would do without you! Sorry for being late, my bus took another route again.
I’m not the one you should tell this, and hurry up, we open in 5 min.
With a big smile, you walked by the kitchen to finally get dressed in your work attire.
---------------------------
Working wasn’t a passion. Making drinks had become mechanical long before even entering this café. Made it more of a chore to keep a place to live.
Even with the knowledge of a thousand years, you had stayed here, certain that something special would happen in this life. This “something special” came with the name of John Smith. A beautiful man in a striped suit, bearing a gorgeous smile. Never would you have guessed that this man could bring so much trouble with him.
You were happy to have learned how to regain your memory faster. And practicing sports did wonders. But Running from potato-headed soldiers wasn’t how you imagined your Monday to go. Their guns secured in hand while they tried to shoot you and the man beside you.
Somehow, you managed to get shot in the side. Sure it hurt like a bitch, but it wasn’t your first rodeo with this kind of injury.
Making a new turn, the two of you had entered a small building. As soon as the door was closed, you heard a weird vibrating sound and saw “John” hunched over the door lock.
“It should last us a bit before they can get us.
-Who the heck are you ?! You seem to know an awful lot about what those are.
-I’m the Doctor.
-The Doctor? What kind of doctor runs from bald potato soldiers?
-I could ask you the same. And you were also shot. Do you think you can still help?
- I might die either way. Let me be useful….”
“ So… what is the plan? “
-----------------------
The Sontarans had tried to sneak a bomb on Earth. Similarly to a mine, someone had to walk on it for it to detonate. In this case, only a human could make it explode. The bomb was still on their ship, and the Doctor had found their teleporter.
The safe was easy to find, but to take down the fleet, the bomb had to be activated.
“Doctor, I know it’s not the best option, but I'm the only one here able to make the ship go down. I’m already injured so it wouldn't be a big loss. You'll probably find me again in another life anyway. You, on the other hand, I’m not entirely sure.
-What do you mean another life ?! You're not dying, not on my watch…!”
The brunette seemed stressed. You knew he was trying to hide it, but you had too much time in your life to know what was going on in his head.
“You know what? Can I promise you something?
-I don’t think I quite follow but go ahead.
-I promise you, I'll always come back. No matter what. Might take a few human years but I'll always be back. No matter the life. “
The doctor seemed surprised. Humans surely made shallow promises in the hope of making things better, and to make others less guilty. But the sincerity of your voice made him believe it, and it scared him.
“Who are you, Louise....?”
All you gave him was a small smile before picking yourself up, blood still spreading on your shirt despite having transformed your apron into a temporary bandage. Only three digits were necessary to open the door. Your hand on the lock, the door slides open, and the monstrosity you had before your eyes made you want to throw up. You knew of the pain that was going to go through you. It wasn’t your first death by a bomb, but the last blasted your brain in tranches below the surface.
The bomb looked like a normal sewer lid, it would have been easy for a citizen to mistake it for a normal one. Checking Behind you, you had hoped to see the face of the doctor one last time before taking a step.
His eyes held sorrow, convinced that he had to make something else work. In comparison yours held hope, knowing that it wouldn’t be your end. But as red lights came into existence, he had to run. His eyes turned as he ran away to get to safety.
Once you knew he was far enough, as your foot barely touched the bomb, you felt your skin burn like a thousand suns. It was almost welcoming.
Darkness took over, letting you sink into the unknown.
---------------------
Has you opened your eyes again, all you could see was the face of a beautiful woman. A halo was drawn on top of her head, as she whispered a sweet lullaby.
making gurgling noises, you finally reached for her nose, desperate to touch something again. And all you saw was her smile as she put her head against yours. Your name fell beautifully from her lips.
“Welcome to the world… Y/N Noble…”

There is a new exhibition called 'La Moda en la Casa de Alba/The Fashion in the House of Alba' at Palacio de Liria in Madrid from October 19th to March 31st. It covers two centuries of the family through their fashion with designs by Charles Frederick Worth, Louise Chéruit, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Flora Villareal, Manuel Pertegaz, and Enmanuel Húngaro. The exhibition includes dresses worn by Empress Eugénie of France, also the Countess of Montijo, and the wedding dresses of Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart, 18th Duchess of Alba, Eugenia Martínez de Irujo, 12th Duchess of Montoro, and Sofía Palazuelo Barroso, Duchess of Huéscar. You can find out more about visiting here.
There are no jewels on display due to security concerns and the cost of insuring them but I noticed in the background of one of the pictures is a portrait of the Duchess of Huéscar wearing the Alba Strawberry Leaf Coronet.
It looks like it was part of the same photo session as the portrait that was found to be on display at Palacio de las Dueñas in Seville in January.
I need to see a better quality picture of Sofia wearing the tiara!
Strawberry leaf ducal-style coronets are very popular amongst Spanish nobility. The one is made of emeralds, diamonds, and pearls and was supposedly a gift from Empress Eugénie to her sister, María Francisca de Sales de Palafox Portocarrero y Kirkpatrick, 16th Duchess of Peñaranda de Duero, wife of the 15th Duke of Alba. Here it is worn by María del Rosario Falcó y Osorio, 21st Countess of Siruela, and María del Rosario de Silva y Gurtubay, 9th Marchioness of San Vicente del Barco, wives of the 16th and 17th Dukes respectively.
Of course it was most famously worn by María del Rosario Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart y Silva, 18th Duchess of Alba, and most titled person in the world before she passed away in 2014.
If anyone goes to the exhibition and is able to get better shot of the portrait, I would very much appreciate if you would send it to me.

La Mode illustrée, no. 29, 21 juillet 1912, Paris. Les nouvelles fleurs en tissu. Louise Villas. No. 1. — Rose en ruban. (Contour de la fleur: 40 centimètres.) No. 2. — Rose en taffetas. (Contour: 13 centimètres.) No. 3. — Rose pompon. (Contour: 6 centimètres.) No. 4. — Pavot. (Contour: 27 centimètres.) Ville de Paris / Bibliothèque Forney
No. 1.
—
Cut a round of patterned muslin 6 centimeters in diameter. Get some very flexible faille ribbon in two pretty shades of pink. The darkest reserved for the heart of the flower. It takes 1.3 meters of each shade over a width of 6 centimeters. Then gather the bottom of the ribbon, reducing the length to 40 centimeters at most.
To simulate the petals it is enough to "pinch" the ribbon from distance to distance by fixing the folds with a point. The first petals are formed 10 centimeters apart (taken from the edge of the ribbon), then gradually increase to 18 centimeters for the largest petals.
This done, we start by sewing the gathered end of the dark ribbon in the center of the washer, then we turn in a spiral by sewing the ribbon. The junction of the two shades is invisible, since it takes place under a petal. Once the flower is finished, the muslin disc is pushed back inside, in order to produce a cavity which gives relief to the flower. Add a stem with artificial foliage.
No. 2.
—
Each rose consists of a heart and five petals. The heart is made with a folded fabric bias. It is 12 centimeters long by 5 centimeters wide, which gives 2.5 centimeters when folded.
Begin to fasten the thread at the end of one of the upper edges doubled, go down on the bias by counting the stitches to the lower edge, go up by forming the same number of stitches and continue these zigzags over the entire length of the bias. Pull the thread strongly. Roll up this little ruffle which will form crumpled points, tie it by the foot, and cut off the excess fabric. Its petals are squares of silk canvas, 10 centimeters wide for the first two, 12 centimeters for the other three, five petals being necessary to make these roses. After having cut them, we fold them in a "handkerchief" and we pass a wire going from one angle to another, by pronouncing more or less the curve on the side of the point of the medium according to the relief which we desire. The tip that remains in the middle must then be removed.
Pull the thread without tightening too much and stop firmly. Proceed in this way for each petal. Then mount them around the heart, starting with the smallest ones.
The leaves are also obtained with a square of fabric. They are also folded into a handkerchief. But here we cut the fabric so as to form two triangles, which makes two sheets per square.
Then fold the triangle back. Sew a seam from top to bottom. Return this cone. The pointed side simulates the top of the leaf. The very tight gathered bottom forms pleats imitating the ribs. Each leaf then attaches under the rose which must remain fairly flat.
No. 3. — Roses pompon.
—
Intended either for a hat or as a corsage.
These roses are made of two-tone silk canvas with artificial foliage. We proceed to make them as for the previous ones, with this difference that the dimensions are very small. The heart is cut over a length of 12 centimeters by 3 centimeters wide. The zigzags are much smaller and this heart is adapted to a brass rod which serves as a mount for the flower. The petals, six in number, are sewn together one by one. The first squares are 4.5 centimeters wide, the others 5.5 centimeters. Proceed as for the previous model, wrapping the heart well so that the flower does not bloom too much. Thread the brass wires into rubber tubes and finish with some foliage.
No. 4. — Pavot.
—
To make this pretty flower we use spiked ribbon which exists in charming colors often shaded, which allows in the width to find two flowers of a different tone. It takes about 75 centimeters of ribbon over a width of 12 centimeters to make two flowers, or 6 centimeters in width for each flower.
Divide these 75 centimeters into five parts. Separate them. Gather the bottom of each strip starting from the picot and describing a curve as for the roses. Then cut down the remaining tips on each side. Tighten the thread strongly and stop.
The frame of the heart consists of any button 1 centimeter in diameter or a simple round piece of cardboard stuffed with wadding, which is fitted to a brass wire. Then cover this frame with a sphere of pale green silk fabric by gathering it around the stem.
Pass black threads criss-crossing them over the entire surface of the heart. Adapt around a small hive 1/2 centimeter high and made as it was said for the hearts of the roses. Firmly press the folds to imitate the pistils and sew around the heart. Use taffeta or silk black, deep blue, purple or a very dark changing tone. Once the corner is finished, place the petals around it, overlapping them one on top of the other. Finish with a branch of foliage.
You can just as well use ribbon without pins; and these flowers, executed in red, imitate field poppies unmistakably.

Napoleon is clueless on Elba during visit of Marie Waleska

---
On the Island of Elba the Emperor was surrounded by a great many people, who, being newly attached to his service, did not know what it was to have discretion. What they saw and heard they were eager to go and tell to whomever would listen. The Emperor himself, while loving mystery, acted without precaution, believing himself to be still surrounded by discreet people. In the evening, he left his tent wearing his dressing gown and went to the ladies' house, from which he only emerged at daybreak. The sentries knew well what to think of these comings and goings. In amorous affairs the simplest man is much more skillful than the Emperor, and more than great lords generally are.

"Agora, a Irmã Louise aqui irá te acompanhar.
– Eris perguntou.
“Infelizmente, ainda tenho a trabalho a fazer... bem, é um pouco solitário, eu sei... Ai!?”
Irmã Louise, qual é o horário do trem? Às 8h10? Plataforma 5? Certo, então Eris, vamos. Acho que tem um banheiro por ali."
"Eh, por que você vai comigo?!"
“Tudo bem, tudo bem…
"Algum problema? Você não está se sentindo bem?" – ele o perguntou.
" ‘Você não está’...?"
Abel repetiu vagamente as palavras do funcionário.
