I was today years old when I realized that Gord Downie was not saying “Two-fifty for an eyeball 👁️, and a buck-and-a-half for a beer🍺” in the first verse of this Tragically Hip song.

I am almost forty, and Canadian. I have heard this song at least a hundred times. It is inescapable.

I have been pondering why this bar was selling eyeballs for literally decades.

Like… was this a Nose Jar situation?

Was it slang for pickled eggs?

…and does that imply that people actually eat those things?

Cause I thought bars only displayed them so they could say that technically, they sold food, and were therefore in compliance with Ontario liquor laws…?
