I came across iji the other day, liked the cover and gave it a listen. The slightly warbly voice made me immediately think of a cross between Daniel Johnston and Matthew Sawyer. So I clicked through to the release and was really blown away by who plays on this album.

Zach Burba (the songwriter here) is a longtime musician who has played with Katy Davidson in Dear Nora. Katy returns the favor by playing on "Automatically". But so does Adrienne Lenker (Big Thief), Luke Csehak (The Lentils), Erin Birgy (Mega Bog). And that's just a partial list of the collaborators on "Automatically".

Burba and iji are based in Los Angeles. This is being released by We Be Friends, a label located in Queens, New York.

Somehow missed this Dear Nora album when it came out in October. The arrangements are restrained and intimate with unexpected textures, and it is always enjoyable to hear Katy Davidson's unique perspective and beautiful singing. Chris Cohen provides an excellent intro text that captures what is so distinctive about Dear Nora records: "To me, the great strength of Dear Nora’s music is that it takes stock of its time and place and captures something that we can revisit later. The lyrics on human futures are written from multiple perspectives but they come from a world of people who travel great distances and are faced with too many options. Katy writes about our being incessantly surveilled and barely tethered to the physical universe and the life around us. Observation of the everyday and of our endlessly referential pop culture serves as a way to understand personal experience through poetic language..." This is out on Orindal Records.

Disclaimer: Please note that my Song Series One-shots are purely based on how I personally interpret the lyrics of the songs I chose for this series. It is not based on the music video (if it has one).

The warm Hawaiian sun kisses your skin as you and your boyfriend, Park Seonghwa, zip down the coastal highway on a sleek vintage Harley-Davidson motorcycle he decided to rent less than an hour ago. The wind whips through your hair, salty and free, as you cling tightly to Seonghwa, your arms wrapped around his waist.

The rhythmic hum of the engine matches the beating of your heart, both racing with the thrill of the ride and the unspoken bond between you.

Your breath catches as the motorcycle swerves gently between lanes on the seemingly heart-shaped highway that hugs the coastline. The turquoise waves crash against the rocks below, a perfect backdrop for your spontaneous adventure. Every curve of the road feels like a new beginning, each mile bringing the two of you even closer together.

You had met Seonghwa just three months ago, a chance encounter at a sports car exhibition. His easy smile and carefree attitude had immediately caught your eye. You were drawn to his sense of adventure, the way he lived in the moment, a stark contrast to your usually meticulous and planned life. You worked as an automotive designer and were currently on vacation for two weeks, and Seonghwa was a model who happened to love motorcycles and cars. He actually had a photoshoot in Hawaii for a magazine and had asked you if you would like to come with him since your vacation days were at the same time. Of course, you would never miss an opportunity like this.

Now, in Hawaii, it hadn't taken Seonghwa much to convince you to hop on the rented Harley for a late-night ride under the stars that very first night you landed on the beautiful island. The way he looked at you, with a mix of curiosity and genuine interest, made you feel like you had known him forever, though it had only been three months.

Now, you seemed inseparable, spending every free moment together. Three months felt like three years— it was that natural with him.

It was a Sunday, the perfect day to escape the routine and explore the scenic island.

"Why don't we get out of town today?" Seonghwa had suggested that afternoon after lunch, his eyes gleaming with excitement. Without hesitation, you had agreed. You'd do anything with him, understandably.

You left the crowded city behind, following the winding roads that led to hidden beaches and secret coves. The sense of freedom was intoxicating, the open road stretching out before you like an invitation to endless possibilities.

As the sun dips lower in the sky, casting pink and purple hues over the horizon, you find yourselves at a secluded beach. The golden sand stretches out before you, inviting and serene.

You sat on the parked Harley, Seonghwa standing in front of you. You run your fingers through his hair, feeling the soft strands slip through your fingers. The warmth of his skin and the sparkle in his eyes are all you need to feel completely content.

"Let's explore the island," you suggest, your eyes sparkling with anticipation. Seonghwa nods, taking your hand as you walk along the shore. The waves lap at your feet, and the sound of the ocean is a soothing symphony. Every step you take feels like a deeper dive into the magic of your surroundings and the deepening connection between you. The island is alive with vibrant colors and sounds, each corner revealing a new surprise, a new memory in the making.

"Let's take a picture here," you suggested, reaching into your sling bag for your phone. Seonghwa took a couple of pictures with you with the ocean and the sunset sky in the background. Then, you were taking videos of the beautiful scenery.

You switched the camera to use the front camera, talking about how much you loved mother nature. Seonghwa came up behind you and rested his chin on your shoulder so that he was in your video, too. His actions caught you by surprise, and you turned your head to look at him, your lips nearly meeting.

Seonghwa didn't straighten up, but instead, his eyes dropped to your plump lips that were glittery due to your lip gloss. He looked between your eyes and your lips before he leaned in to kiss you oh so gently, your phone recording the precious moment. You kissed him back with the same gentleness, turning your body more towards him so you could wrap your free arm around his neck. Seonghwa smiled into the kiss, causing you to do the same. He pulled away, his beautiful eyes staring into yours with nothing but love and adoration.

"I love you," he confessed for the first time, and the butterflies went wild in your stomach. You shared the same feelings as him, though you were afraid to tell him as you thought it was still too early in the relationship.

You giggled, and he mimicked you, grinning from ear to ear. "I love you too, Seonghwa," you said, pecking his lips. You completely forgot you were still recording until your arm felt sore. "Oh! Oh, it's still recording!" you stopped recording and went to your camera roll to replay the video.

"Send it to me," Seonghwa said while he watched the video. He kissed your head, sighing in content.

The two of you spent some quality time at the beach before continuing your little adventure on the Harley. You stumbled upon a small, local market, vibrant with colors and the scent of tropical fruits. Seonghwa buys a delicate flower crown for you, placing it gently on your head. The gesture is sweet, a reminder of the carefree joy you have found in each other's company. The market buzzes with activity, locals and tourists mingling, sharing stories and laughter.

You and Seonghwa sample exotic fruits, their flavors bursting on your tongues, a symphony of taste that perfectly complements the beauty around you.

The day turns darker, and the market's lights begin to twinkle like stars. You wander through the stalls, hand in hand, sampling local delicacies and marveling at the handcrafted jewelry.

One jeweler catches Seonghwa's eye, and he leads you to the display of sparkling gems. The array of necklaces, bracelets, and rings glint under the soft lights, each piece telling a story of craftsmanship and tradition.

Seonghwa grins, picking up a delicate bracelet adorned with tiny seashells and pearls. "For you," he says, fastening it around your wrist. "To remember this perfect day." The bracelet feels cool against your skin, a tangible reminder of the day's magic. You can't help but smile, feeling a deep sense of gratitude for these moments that seem too perfect to be real.

As night falls, you return to your beach-side hotel, where a bonfire has been lit at the beach. The flames dance and crackle, casting a warm glow over the gathered crowd. You join the gathering, dancing to the beat of the drums, your bodies swaying in sync with the island rhythms. The stars above seem to dance with you, a celestial celebration of your newfound love. The music, the fire, and the stars create an atmosphere that is both surreal and grounding, a perfect end to a perfect day.

"Being here with you in Hawaii," you murmur, leaning against Seonghwa as you sit by the fire, watching the embers float up into the night sky. "It's like a dream." The warmth of the fire and the cool breeze from the ocean create a perfect balance, much like the balance you have found with Seonghwa.

Seonghwa kisses your forehead, his arm wrapped protectively around you. "A dream we'll keep living," he promises. "Just you and I." His words are a soothing balm to your soul, a promise of many more adventures, many more perfect days.

And as you hold each other close, the promise of many more adventures to come lingers in the warm Hawaiian air, as endless and beautiful as the ocean before you.

The island, with its vibrant life and serene beauty, has become a backdrop to your love story, each moment adding a new layer to your bond. As you drift into a contented silence, the waves whispering softly in the background, you know that this is just the beginning of something truly magical.

Dropout Does The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals

So my theory about overlap of Dropout and Team Starkid seems to be accurate, and people seemed to like my Dropout does Nerdy Prudes Must Die post, so I'm back for another. Same method and criteria as my previous post, you can go see that if you want to know what they are. Also, I have previously done a similar list with Internet Personalities that included a handful of Dropout people, but I'm gonna try to make this one different.

Paul: Ross Bryant

Ross is a great straight man (in the comedy sense, I don't know his sexuality) while being very funny in his own right, and I think, while Paul has a lot of his own funny moments, it's very important that his character is also the more normal guy reacting to the madness around him. Also, he would slay the Jekyll and Hyde homage that is Let it Out.

Emma : Siobhan Thompson

I think one of the essential parts of Emma's character is an underlying exhaustion with the world, and that is very Adaine Abernant and Ruby Rocks, so I think Siobhan would embody that very well.

Charlotte: Vic Michaelis

I don't think I've ever heard them do a transatlantic accent before, but I just have this gut feeling they'd be so good at it.

Ted: Ify Nwadiwe

While I do genuinely think Ify would be great in the part, if I'm being fully honest, this casting is because I (despite my better judgment) find Ted Spankoffski hot, so casting arguably the hottest man in Dropout in this part makes me seem less damaged for being attracted to the self-proclaimed sleazeball. Also him and Vic seem like they would be great playing off each other.

Bill: Brian "Murph" Murphy

He just has "refuses to drink during the apocalypse so he can be the DD" energy.

Mr Davidson: Brian David Gilbert

Since I'm splitting up all the parts, this basically turns Mr Davidson into a Princess Track where the actor just shows up, sings about desire and being choked while he jerks off, but laments how he can never achieve his dreams, and then pretty much leaves, and I don't know why, but that seems right up BDG's alley.

Melissa: Lisa Gilroy

Lisa Gilroy seems nice, but also kinda scares me, and those are the correct vibes for Melissa (#heymelissacore)

Sam: Jacob Wysoki

My only concern about this casting is that he'd go SO HARD in You Tied Up My Heart that he would keep breaking the handcuffs and/or chair, but that's fine, it would be worth it.

Nora: Katie Marovitch

The "Decaf?" parts of Cup of Roasted Coffee already sounds a bit like her TBH.

Zoey: Rehka Shankar

I feel like Zoey is such an underrated, funny side character in the show (I know she's a very small part, but like every line she has is a banger) and I feel like Rehka is a very underrated performer, so this is a good match.

Greenpeace Girl: Persephone Valentine

Making up the Save the Sea Turtles campaign is such a Sam Nightengale move, and also she would eat up Lah Dee Dah Dah Day.

Alice: Surena Marie

She's got a bit of a baby face (I thought she was like 25) and I think she would handle the change from Alice to Hivemind Alice really well.

Deb: Emily Axford

I'm definitely not just casting this because I want Emily to be my protective and caring girlfriend...

Professor Hidgens: Josh Ruben

I don't have an explanation for this one, this is vibes alone.
