'We Can Bury Anyone': Inside a Hollywood Smear Machine (Megan Twohey and Mike McIntire and Julie Tate, The New York Times, Dec 21 2024)
"Last summer, as the release of “It Ends With Us” approached, Justin Baldoni, the director and a star of the film, and Jamey Heath, the lead producer, hired a crisis public relations expert.
During shooting, Blake Lively, the co-star, had complained that the men had repeatedly violated physical boundaries and made sexual and other inappropriate comments to her.
Their studio, Wayfarer, agreed to provide a full-time intimacy coordinator, bring in an outside producer and put other safeguards on set.
In a side letter to Ms. Lively’s contract, signed by Mr. Heath, the studio also agreed not to retaliate against the actress.
But by August, the two men, who had positioned themselves as feminist allies in the #MeToo era, expressed fears that her allegations would become public and taint them, according to a legal complaint that she filed Friday.
It claims that their P.R. effort had an explicit goal: to harm Ms. Lively’s reputation instead.
Her filing includes excerpts from thousands of pages of text messages and emails that she obtained through a subpoena.
These and other documents were reviewed by The New York Times. (…)
Mr. Baldoni was best known for the CW satirical romantic dramedy “Jane the Virgin.”
Wayfarer provided the resources for bigger ambitions. It was bankrolled by the billionaire Steve Sarowitz, who is co-chair of the studio with Mr. Baldoni.
They and Mr. Heath, the chief executive, are all deeply involved with the Baha’i religious organization, which promotes unity, peace and gender equality.
Mr. Baldoni has presented himself as an ally to women, writing books, co-hosting a podcast with Mr. Heath and giving talks on toxic masculinity. (…)
She claimed Mr. Baldoni had improvised unwanted kissing and discussed his sex life, including encounters in which he said he may not have received consent.
Mr. Heath had shown her a video of his wife naked, she said, and he had watched Ms. Lively in her trailer when she was topless and having body makeup removed, despite her asking him to look away.
She said that both men repeatedly entered her makeup trailer uninvited while she was undressed, including when she was breastfeeding. (…)
As the film release neared, Ms. Lively and other cast members informed Sony and Wayfarer that they would not do any appearances alongside Mr. Baldoni.
So did Ms. Hoover, the author, who had her own dissatisfactions with him and had become more upset after he told her about Ms. Lively’s allegations, according to text messages from Mr. Baldoni and Mr. Heath.
By the first week of August, Wayfarer and Mr. Baldoni had retained Ms. Nathan, who had worked with high-profile clients including Mr. Depp, whose ex-wife, Amber Heard, accused him of physical abuse. (…)
Three days later, Mr. Baldoni texted Ms. Abel, flagging a social media thread that accused another celebrity of bullying behavior and had generated 19 million views. “This is what we would need,” he wrote.
Ms. Nathan soon floated proposals to hire contractors to dominate social media through “full social account take downs,” by starting “threads of theories” and generally working to “change narrative.”
“All of this will be most importantly untraceable,” she wrote. (…)
When Ms. Abel wrote to her Aug. 4 that “I’m having reckless thoughts of wanting to plant pieces this week of how horrible Blake is to work with. Just to get ahead of it,” Ms. Nathan replied that she had spoken off the record to an editor at The Daily Mail.
“She’s ready when we are,” Ms. Nathan wrote.
A flurry of articles followed the Hollywood Reporter piece. Many made it seem as if the only rift was over creative control.
Some journalists had gotten wind of complaints about Mr. Baldoni’s behavior, but none of the most serious ones were published.
“He doesn’t realise how lucky he is right now,” Ms. Nathan texted Ms. Abel. (…)
It is unclear exactly how Mr. Wallace operated.
There are references in emails to “social manipulation” and “proactive fan posting,” and text messages cite efforts to “boost” and “amplify” online content that was favorable to Mr. Baldoni or critical of Ms. Lively.
“We are crushing it on Reddit,” Mr. Wallace told Ms. Nathan, according to a text she sent Ms. Abel on Aug. 9.
The next day, one of Ms. Nathan’s employees texted, “We’ve started to see shift on social, due largely to Jed and his team’s efforts to shift the narrative.”
Ms. Nathan wrote to Ms. Abel: “And socials are really really ramping up. In his favour, she must be furious. It’s actually sad because it just shows you have people really want to hate on women.” (…)
On Aug. 16, Ms. Nathan shared the Daily Mail article headlined “Is Blake Lively set to be CANCELLED?” with references to ‘hard to watch’ videos and a ‘tone deaf’ promotional Q. and A.
“Wow. You really outdid yourself with this piece,” Ms. Abel responded.
“That’s why you hired me right?” Ms. Nathan replied. “I’m the best.”"

Blake Lively has sued Justin Baldoni for sexual harassment and misconduct she experienced on the set of ‘It Ends With Us’. In the court documents reviewed by the New York Times, it was revealed that Justin Baldoni’s PR firm TAG PR wanted to falsely plant stories about Taylor as part of the smear campaign they were running against Blake.
The lawsuit states that they were exploring “planting stories about the weaponization of feminism and how people in Lively’s circle like Taylor Swift, have been accused of utilizing these tactics to ‘bully’ into getting what they want.”
TAG PR’s majority stakeholder is a company run by Scooter Braun.
Back in late August, right around the time this smear campaign was being carried out, Scooter Braun suddenly posted to his Instagram stories about Blake and Taylor spending time together, to bring attention to their friendship out of nowhere on the weekend of Blake’s birthday. (x)

i've recently watched a video on the downfall of blake lively and in it a tiktok was featured about ryan and how he comes off as "inauthentic" and "performing" in his interviews and that criticism to me comes of as so so strange and parasocial.
at the end of the day, there are many many reasons why we can criticize celebrities (not just blake or ryan or hugh, and whether we should is a completely different conversation). however, i feel like them "performing" in interviews is not one of them. at the end of the day, that is their job, and when youre such a popular public figure, i can only imagine that you want to leave your real self hidden and put aside for people close to you as much as possible. even more so with ryan, who openly and often spoke about his anxiety and how to him during interviews it IS like a perfomance that he puts on to deal with it. idk we should stop expecting celebrities or actors to "be their authentic self." they play a character you like, and that's what matters anything outside their job is just a nice extra bonus and they're people!!!! that we don't know!!! and it's none of our business!!!!
stop expecting famous people to act like your friend, they're not! they're strangers and deserve basic human decency jesus.

Blake Lively is currently suing Justin Baldoni for sexually harassing her during the making of “It Ends With Us”, and the response to it is already deeply disappointing, to say the least.
Congratulations to everyone who keeps falling for misogynistic smear campaigns against women and going to battle to defend the abusive men orchestrating them. It is always “believe victims” until it’s a woman you dislike.

This is a link to Blake Lively's full complaint against Justin Baldoni and holy shit is it incredibly damning. Most of the news outlets are skimming over the details but it is absolutely worth a read:

Justice for Blake Lively like this is evil and horrific
It honestly makes perfect sense that Justin Baldoni hired Johnny Depps PR team.

I’m reading the lawsuit now. I’m not sure. How can I tell if it’s legit vs lies?
Genuine thanks for this question and not just immediately assuming that she's lying.
Look, at the end of the day, none of us were there. The only people that know what truly went down are the people that were on that set (which is true of any lawsuit), but here's what's really convincing me.
First things first, Baldoni hired Melissa Nathan back in August to run his public relations (and this article even mentions the allegations that he made Lively uncomfortable). Nathan worked for Johnny Depp during his defamation trial against Amber Heard, and it has been found that a technique called "astroturfing" was used against Heard on social media during this trial. Astroturfing is defined as "the deceptive practice of presenting an orchestrated marketing or public relations campaign in the guise of unsolicited comments from members of the public." Basically, artificially creating hate or hype for a public figure but making it seem organic. If you remember the Depp/Heard trial, you remember how much social media seemed to turn against her. If you remember this summer, you remember how much social media seemed to turn against Blake Lively. The fact that the same public relations team was on the other side of both alleged smear campaigns is a red flag.
Second, the text messages that have been released between Baldoni and the PR team are, in my opinion, incredibly damning. One member of the team, Jennifer Abel, texted Nathan "I think you guys need to be tough and show the strength of what you guys can do in these scenarios. He wants to feel like she can be buried." Nathan responded "Of course - but you know when we send over documents we can't send over the work we will or could do because that could get us in a lot of trouble. We can't write we will destroy her. Imagine if a document saying all the things that he wants ends up in the wrong hands. You know we can bury anyone." Right below are some screenshots from the New York Times article:

Later texts also involve praise for this article
Now, is it possible that all of these texts have been faked? Of course. But they are also lengthy (I did not include all of them here) and considering what I mentioned above, unlikely.
Thirdly, I'm just considering who has more to gain from this. I will admit my own bias here - I've never bought the idea that women by and large make allegations to become rich or famous or to gain sympathy. Amber Heard is probably still one of the most hated women on the planet. Name five of Bill Cosby's accusers off of the top of your head.
But what does each party have to gain? If Baldoni loses this case and is found in the public eye to have sexually harassed the women on the set of It Ends With Us, that's probably the end of his career. As far as I know, he doesn't have the industry goodwill that Roman Polanski or Woody Allen or even Johnny Depp do, and he will most likely start losing acting and directing roles. If he wins, and the public decides that Lively is lying, his career won't be destroyed. It will almost certainly have been set back, and there will always be people who'll look at him differently, but overall he should be fine. He may even gain a new fanbase.
If Lively loses this case and is found to have been lying, her career is tarnished forever. She will undoubtedly be known as the "next Amber Heard," and she will lose out on acting roles. The taint may even carry over to her husband. If she wins, and the public decides that Baldoni did in fact sexually harass women on set, she will probably be fine. Like Baldoni, there will always be people who'll believe that she was lying, but she'll be overall fine. However, it's important to note that she had a third option: to not pursue this at all. If she chooses not to pursue legal action against Baldoni, both of their careers remain unimpacted. While there would still have been a negative public perception of her, it probably would have blown over eventually. A lawsuit and possible trial is much more permanent in people's memories. So to me, the fact that she's choosing to pursue this knowing what the outcome of her losing would be speaks volumes.
Finally, the fact that her lawsuit states that other women on set were harassed and felt uncomfortable. Again, could be a lie, but that is a lie that is very easy to disprove. And if the women who worked on this set testify that they never felt uncomfortable, that will permanently damage her case. It just feels like too much of a risk to play with if you're lying.
Of course, don't just take my word for it - do your own research, seek out differing opinions, etc. but those are my views. I hope they helped in some way!

how many times are yall going to fall for the "pretty actress is secretly AN EVIL BITCH who is SO DIFFICULT TO WORK WITH" routine only for it to come out the studio was pushing that narrative to get ahead of SA allegations before you realize you're the problem?

Y'all really fall for that "man spews shallow feminist talking points to distract from glaring concerns about how he actually treats women, such as numerous women in his professional orbit cutting ties with him" every damn time

i still don't like blake lively. never have, never will. i 100% believe her though. i feel like this is gonna be one of those things where people disregard whatever allegations are made just because the person making them can't be painted as the 'perfect' victim. which is dumb as shit cuz like yeah blake seems to be an asshole but even people you don't like can get ass4ulted.

I stand with Blake, I knew there was something really fishy about the way people were all of a sudden finding "reasons" to hate on her left and right. She has proof and receipts in case anyone is doubting her btw.
