"Okay, so ya know a lotta musicians. Got it. Should'a probably figuahed that wit' tha whole radio thing," Angel admitted bemusedly.

With Alastor's assent, Angel moved to settle himself in the deer's lap, giving a peck on the cheek as he did so. He wrapped both arms on one side around him and leaned into him, relishing being close. With one of his other hands, he scrolled through his phone until he came across what he was looking for. He had an instrumental version of the song he was currently using.

"This is what I've got fa' my show now," he told Alastor. He hit play and sat up a little straighter as he waited for his cue. When it came, he started singing, his eyes and markings glowing faintly. "Til death do us part, but we're already past dat phase. This is a brand new start, an' I think I deserve some praise fa' tha way that I a~m. Despite havin' overdosed an' endin' up comatose, I don't give a da~mn. I've let my emotions go. Fuck bein' a sober ho."

He had turned his gaze a bit away from Alastor for those last few lines, but looked back over at him as he continued on. "This is tha mantra, this is my life you're playin' with now 'til tha end'a tha night. Surrounded by fire tha passion ignites! A hit'a that heaven an' hell, a helluva high!"

He hit the chorus with a smile that actually looked genuine. His eyes were still glowing as he sang, "I'm addicted to tha madness. This hotel is my Atlantis. We're forever gonna have a fuckin' reason ta sin, let me leave my soul ta burn an' I'll be breathin' it in. I'm addicted ta tha feeling, gettin' higher than tha ceilin' an' we're never gonna want this fuckin' feelin' ta end, just concede and give in to yer inner demons again!"

There was a brief instrumental break before Angel cut back in with, "Just concede an' give in to yer inner demons again." Just once, and then he leaned into Alastor while the music played. He seemed a little awkward sitting still through it, neither moving nor singing.

He straightened back up a he picked up with the next verse. "Yeah, you fell in love, but you fell deeper in this pit. While death rains from above, so count yer blessings 'cause is it. You're not letting it go~. So what if I misbehave? It's what everybody craves. You already kno~w, so come if yer feelin' brave an' fancy yourself a mate. You want it, I got it. See what you like. We could have it all by the end of the night. Your money an' power, my sinful delight. A hit of that heaven an' hell, a helluva high!"

And then he cycled back into the chorus, allowing himself to lean into Alastor a bit rather than worrying about keeping his posture. "I'm addicted to the madness. This hotel is my Atlantis. We're forever gonna have a fuckin' reason ta sin, let me leave my soul ta burn an' I'll be breathin' it in. I'm addicted ta tha feeling, gettin' higher than tha ceilin' an' we're never gonna want this fuckin' feelin' ta end, just concede and give in to yer inner demons again!"

There was another short instrumental break, then the chorus repeated again. A few more bars of music followed that, but once the music stopped, Angel started singing again, adding, "I'm addicted ta tha so~rrow when tha buzz ends. By tomorrow, there's another rush'a poison flowin' inta my veins, givin' me a dose'a pleasure that resides by tha pain. I'm addicted, I'm dependent. Lookin' awesome, feeling helpless. And I know I'm raisin' Cain by every highway in Hell. Maybe things won't be so terrible inside this hotel."

He was still for just a moment after he finished singing. The glow faded from his eyes and he settled in closer against Al. Then, quietly, he explained, "It really ain't supposed ta be just me singin' that. 'Least, it wasn't written fa' just me. Cherri helped me write it an' it's really meant ta be more like a duet. First verse's mine, second's hers. Hers is actually about her asshole of a boyfriend. We wrote it right afta' she ditched 'im an' I moved inta this place. And, uh, tha bit at tha end ain't in my shows. Didn't even let Val hear that fa' him ta tell me ta cut it. It just didn't fit fa' tha show. It's more just me ventin'."

With that, he fell silent, resting his head on the deer's shoulder and just watching Alastor quietly. He knew he sounded better with musical backing. This song was probably also a little easier to hear. It was at least a lot more upbeat. If you didn't pay close attention, it would seem happy. Granted, that last verse sort of ruined that illusion entirely.

The ding that emanated from the deer was telling. Alastor was excited. Perhaps it was just having a new act to fawn over. That was probably it. But that was fine. Angel was more than happy to let Alastor indulge in that.

He didn't immediately move to retrieve his phone, though. Alastor had wrapped an arm around him and nestled his face into the spider's hair. Angel didn't want to dislodge him. After all, he was still marveling slightly at Alastor being so forgiving.

The offer to find musical talent to accompany him did catch his attention. Softly, he replied, "I'm up fa' singin' if ya wanna hear it. An' I'm kinda curious as ta how ya'd come up with musical talent. It's not that I'm doubtin' ya, it's just... not big band or jazz, ya know? You'll see when I get my phone. But, uh, I also don't know why ya'd do that. It's not like I eva' record tha shit I write just ta write it. An' it ain't exactly dat Val said it's not good enough. He ain't heard most of 'em. 'Cause he wouldn't take 'em well. Some of 'em're about him an' he wouldn't take too kindly ta dat."

By which Angel meant coming home cut to ribbons once more would be a distinct possibility, depending on the song. Angel was careful about what he let the moth hear. He had to be.

The spider wasn't really thinking about the possibility of Alastor wanting to record those songs. He didn't even consider it. He had only ever recorded anything when it was for work. And even then, it was mainly so that if he couldn't sing for some reason, he would still have music for his act. And even still, he preferred to simply sing live rather than lipsync. It was likely no one in the audience realized that. They weren't there to hear him sing, after all.

Finally, he shifted to pull himself out of Alastor's embrace. Quickly, he grabbed his phone off the nightstand. But instead of sitting back down - either in seiza or curled up next to Alastor as he had been - he stayed on his knees, looking as though he was waiting for a cue of some sort.

Lately ive been seeing multiple top ten lists that squeeze in kamaru usman at number 9 or 10. Do you think this is a fair assessment or recency bias? I feel like having 2 of his title defenses against bum ass Masvidal kinda works against his legacy. Obviously usman is a much more complete well rounded fighter than izzy hut i think theres an argument to be made Izzy had a better level of competition. I wonder if one of Usmans victims (strickland) becoming mw champ is whats propelling him to top ten status since what seemed like a random win at the time is now aging extremely well

Yeah, sadly half of Usman’s titles wins (Colby 2, Masvidal 2, and Woodley) aged really poorly. TBF the Masvidal and Colby rematches were crap from the jump. Woodley went on to lose every round of MMA he fought after Usman and threw like 10 punches combined. I do think the first Masvidal and Colby wins (+Burns) are worth a lot but if we’re holding those up as Usman’s big career wins? How do they match up against the best wins of Fedor, Silva, GSP, Aldo, Holloway, Volk, DJ, Jones, DC, Lawler, Khabib, Alvarez, Poirier, TJ, Cruz, McGregor, Islam, Do Bronx, BJ, Edgar, Stipe, Whittaker, or Izzy (I’m leaving a lot of names out). I just don’t think the wins are there to be honest. I also don’t give Usman too much credit for his win over Strickland because this is the same guy who was losing to Zaleski dos Santos and Ponz at 170lbs. Good fighters but not on anyone’s top 30 greatest fighters in WW history. Sean’s best win at 170 is arguably Nordine Taleb.

The story of Usman’s title reign was one of rebirth and gridlock at welterweight imo. Lawler, Woodley, Condit, and Wonderboy were aging out. Hendricks ate his way out 170. Then you had guys like Usman and Colby coming up on the old guard (Maia, Woodley, RDA) while Masvidal just so happened to get hot at the right moment off beating a guy who had heat but wasn’t as good as we thought (Till) and a loudmouth meme generator with a nonfunctional hip (Askren).

But guys like Leon, Belal, and - to a lesser extent - Rakhmonov, Chimaev, etc were kind of left on the outside looking in. Once Colby and Masvidal established themselves as contenders and stars(?), they did not interact with anyone else again. For as good as they had been on the rise, I’d argue neither Colby or Masvidal ever solidified themselves in real Max Holloway/Robert Whittaker “I’m going to be at worst the #3 fighter in this division for a long time” way. And it’s still a thing we are dealing with years later. It took Leon and Belal like 10 fights with no losses to get a title fight. And Belal only just got his this year! That’s insane. He came up at the same time as Colby and Usman! With no immediate stars at 170, we’re probably back to guys getting to mix it up across the rankings so I’m happy the division is finally out of gridlock. The logjam seems to have passed.

Another knock against Usman is he hasn’t really had anything to show in his post-prime. When Aldo, Holloway, and Whittaker, for example, lost their titles? They proceeded to come back and just start picking off contenders. Taking big fight after big fight. To his credit, I thought Usman looked good in his fight with Chimaev for the circumstances he found himself in. I think he might still have some gas in the tank. A couple big name wins would really boost his resume.

But ultimately? ATG list are subjective. I don’t think the welterweight division has gotten significantly better since the days of GSP like some of these other divisions have, but that’s my opinion. I do think you’re correct about recency bias though. A lot of modern MMA fans don’t actually know anything about the sport pre-2019 though

1.) Despite his vehement denial of all things ghosts and spirit like, Ollie likes supernatural shows like Supernatural (he stopped watching after season 5 or 6, whenever the Leviathans came) and Stranger Things

2.) Ollie had nightmares for weeks about being turned evil by the Void King and Void Queen, then working as a double agent for Zedd. His s/o reassures him for hours after these nightmares.

3.) Ollie wasn't evil during his time with Zedd. He was a double agent working around the clock to help his friends in any sort of way he could

4.) Ollie's father was a piece of shit and abused him and his mom. Ollie was six when his father died, via falling down the stairs. Ollie doesn't regret it. Ollie also doesn't miss him.

5.) Ollie is protective of his mother to the point that he checks on her three times a day outside of normal texting

6.) Ollie is the youngest of the Rangers, not Izzy. He's 16 at the start of Dino Fury. He skipped a few grades, currently he's registered for online college classes. There's also a reason that Solon and the other Rangers call him Boy Genius/Baby Genius

She refused to let Ollie testify because he burst into tears at the thought and she refused to out him under more duress
