Inktober day 28: Sebek Zigvolt // Cucafera
Cucafera or Cuca fera (wild critter) is a monstrous dragon from the catalan bestiary (the ensemble of real and mythical animals statues exhibited during local festivities in the Catalan Countries, originating from the medieval theater during the processions of Corpus Christi).
Cucafera is used to represent both "idolatry" and "heresy" during Corpus, and the oldest documented one is from Montblanc (Concà de Barberà) from the XIV century. There's also documentation of a Cucafera in the city of Múrcia in the XVII century, a vestige of when catalan was still spoken there.
Cucafera is represented as a kind of giant turtle but with a crocodile's head and an extensible neck. Cucafera clacks its teeth to scare children and everyday it eats 13 cats and 3 kids. It's said to be related to the Tarasca from Tarascó (Provença, France).

was talking to my friends about this but i love how you have two kinds of gender neutral chinese pronouns in fandom (since chinese doesn't have gender neutral third person pronouns): the chinese limbus company fandom referring to dante as 祂 (a third person pronoun specifically for gods and deities) and medicine pocket reverse 1999 canonically using 它 (it)

Every time I think about what Ahti II would sound like I always have to metaphorically beat myself on the head, “he sounds Swedish!!! He sounds Swedish!!! HE!! SOUNDS!!! SWEDISH!!!!!” I accidentally make him British every single time
#hard to conjure up a swedish accent in my brain for some reason#well to be clear he sounds finnish to people who are not finnish but finns incorrectly clock his accent as swedish instead#this is because the language of surish is like if helsinki slang got to develop on its own for thousands of years#the merfolk population of osmeri is actually quite diverse with people all over the baltic region ehh.. “coming together” to put it nicely#its tricky to find a good headcanon voice because currently what i think is the closest is my sister doing a swedish accent lmao#wow surish. you should get your own post. im not making a whole conlang but surish is nice :)#the english name of the official language of osmeri comes from the english hearing from the scandinavians that the merfolk speak in sjösprå#sjöspråk actually meaning seaspeak which is what people around the baltic tend to call the language. surish is merenpuhe in finnish#(not to be confused with vedenpuhe which means waterspeak; a spell and the act of being able to speak clearly underwater)#sjöspråk evolved a bit. shousprok. surespoke. …surish? surish!#i dont actually know what surish is in surish. ive yet to decide! it would be nice to have a name that means “our language”#i suppose its a good thing surish is a nonexistent language but its a bit hard to come up with words that are like… almost-finnish#wait whoops. i was literally only meant to make a post about ahti sounding swedish lmaoooo anyway yeah lol#ahti II#sirpaverse#not fish

me, aromantic, who forgets that a “ship” is usually romantic and that not everyone can experience nor conceptualise the intricacy of an aromantic relationship that transcends society’s amatonormative views of love and human connection and that most people’s views of a relationship end at the platonic or romantic dichotomy: why are people making this ship romantic

Also reading her household book does confirm that Isabella of France directly corresponded with Hugh le Despenser the elder during the 1310's...Much to think about...

I heard you say you were good at math, do you happen to have any good tips at studying math? Genuine question here, I just failed my final exam for a math course. I am bummed and looking for advice. Sorry if this was a weird question to ask of you on this blog. And for also asking on anon, im a bit to embarrassed to ask this on my account.
I'm not sure if I have any good types and tricks...math was just my Neurodivergent Perk that I've had since I was a kid...also full disclaimer that I completed my high school math credits in middle school and my college math credits in high school so while that is a pretty epic gamer moment, it also means I have not touched a proper math course in like 6 years
Fun time math lesson with Danny below (:
One pattern that I used to do (at least when it came to formulas) was kinda organize my work into categories, if that makes sense.
So let's say you have a physics (shush it's still math) problem that's looking for the potential energy of an item weighing 7kg that's 5m above the earth --
What's the formula? - PE = mass * gravitational * height
What's the values we already know? - m = 7m, g = 9.8 m/s^2 (this is an always constant value for earth's gravity), h = 5m
Plug it in - PE = 7 * 9.8 * 5
Final answer - PE = 343 J (Jules)
Sometimes you're going to have to use other formulas first before you can get to the meat of your main problem. So let's use the same example, but now the height is 7 feet. You'll need to convert that first into meters before you can plug it into your formula and it can help keep track of your work --
What's the formula? - meters = ft/0.3048
What's the values we already know? - ft = 7
Plug it in - m = 7/0.3048
Final answer - m = 2.1336 (usually round off to nearest 100th, so we'll use 2.13). meters = height // h = 2.13m
What's the formula? - PE = mass * gravitational * height
What's the values we already know? - m = 7m, g = 9.8 m/s^2, h = 2.13m
Plug it in - PE = 7 * 9.8 * 2.13
Final answer - PE = 146.18 J
Now let's say we know the PE is 68.31 J and it's resting at a height of 8m, but we don't know its mass? Simple! Do the same exact sequence of organizing and you'll be able to tell how to work backwards.
What's the formula? - PE = mass * gravitational * height
What's the values we already know? - g = 9.8 m/s^2, h = 8m, PE = 68.31 J
Plug it in - 68.31 = m * 9.8 * 8 // 68.31 = m * 78.4 // 68.31/78.4 = m * 78.4/78.4 (this will cancel out completely, so it will NOT be m * 0) // 0.87 = m
Final answer - m = 0.87
My overall suggestion is to focus on memorize your equations first and foremost, and from there use the 4 steps to organize your work. The variables will always be given to you, so as long as you can remember which formulas (and constant variables!!) are necessary for that information, you should be golden! Then, you can plug and play as needed, but keep in mind you may need additional equations to get all of your variables first. If you're able to, there tons of free specialty calculators you can use specifically for certain formulas! I used omnicalculator's Potential Energy Calculator to check my work here in fact, give or take a few decimals.
Granted, this information mostly applies to math likes physics, algebraic, and trig. I am dogshit at geometry because I can't visualize and angles vex (heh) me so...man good luck to you if that's the field you're struggling in.

I’ve been learning Norwegian with books and Duolingo for the last (almost) year and every time I read “helgen” I instantly think of the exact opposite of what I’m supposed to think of. Practicing Norwegian? Think of Skyrim. Playing Skyrim? Why is this town named “the weekend”? I can’t win. The wrong one is always the first to come to mind
#emma posts#Skyrim#game developers: open up a Norwegian dictionary and point to a word at random#that’s a town now#it could also be a joke or something#I don’t remember if the start of the game takes place during an in-game weekend but if it does#the town only lasted a weekend (to you)#but a weekend implies two days#maybe it’s a Swedish word or something instead#I haven’t gotten that far into Swedish and Icelandic uses a lot of different letters#they seem to have gotten rid of a lot of them on the continental Nordic countries#but I don’t know ANY danish and I have no concept of Faroese (I am so sorry if I massacred the spelling)#I don’t have a Swedish dictionary so I’d have to use google translate or something to check#Icelandic seems to have more words for things than Norwegian but I’m not really learning that language yet#my grandparents decided to try learning Icelandic first and I am like. in awe but also a bit sorry#they don’t really have a reason to learn Norwegian and Swedish though. unlike me#and apparently Icelandic is the hardest to learn. which is why I developed my fantastic learning strategy#Norwegian seems slightly easier to learn as a native English speaker than Swedish does. and Icelandic is obviously the hardest. but it’s#also closest to their shared ancestor (remember I’m talking about language) so if I start with Norwegian it will be easiest and then#with each of the other languages the next should be easier than it would be without the other two#Norwegian and Icelandic have an interesting history as related languages but that’s not important to this discussion#but… Icelandic is all the same and Norwegian and Swedish have a whole bunch of regional stuff and oh boy idk#but all I need to know for the foreseeable future is how to read and listen#I don’t need writing and speaking yet#this would be so much easier if my grandparents had not just switched to English and forgot any of the other languages they grew up with#though the Icelandic ones didn’t speak much at all compared to my dad’s parents who spoke some of theirs as kids#I could know even more languages by now if everyone hadn’t just switched to English. though I keep forgetting how to write Spanish. that’s#only half related though. since it’s the second most popular language in my country we had some classes as kids and some media that was#bilingual but not enough for me to ever be fluent. plus I freeze up any time I try conversation because I get too nervous about making#mistakes. I’m so off track in the tags though
