Struck by Gideon the Ninth inverting the inherent tragedy of the Lionheart trope because the Lionheart actually gets to die saving the one they’ve been charged to protect and it is somehow just as tragic as the original trope

I’m sure that this is not a hot take and that a lot of people feel the same way but like…
The question “does it have spice?!🌶️🔥” makes me want to jump off a cliff. I’m out here looking for gothic book recommendations on Reddit, tumblr, and goodreads and WHY is this the first question so many people ask 😭
Look, I love erotica as much as the next person but come on. There have got to be other things that matter when recommending books or choosing to pick one up, my GOD.
#am I just old?#like am I being unreasonable?#I don’t want to blame booktok for this but I’m dying over here#and romance and spice are two different things#a lot of these spicy books are just straight up trash but people tout them as amazing romances#like excuse me?#if they’re having nasty sex within 50 pages it’s not romance#it’s not love at first sight either#it’s lust#Christ I just wanted a gothic book for fall and after I’ve been in a reading slump after finishing the shepherd king duology#don’t fucking recommend me haunting Adeline good GOD#anyway#if someone has a solid gothic recommendation pls send it my way#otherwise I’ll be forced to read Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights and I am more of an Austen girlie than a Brontë girlie#sorry grandma pls don’t haunt me from the afterlife for that#booktok cringe#anti booktok#I don’t even know how to tag this bc I’m not even anti booktok#book recommendations#book recs#someone help me#personal#rant#half the time the spice isn’t even good#I get better smut from fanfiction#I need to clarify that I don’t care if you like spicy books#go off girly pop#but I am BEGGING for a modicum of self reflection#spice should not be the only reason you’re reading a book 100% of the time holy fuck

having read nearly all of the Jeeves short stories, it’s so funny to me that Bertie’s bisexuality manifests as casting a wide but shallow net at girls and a narrow but ridiculously deep net at men. He thinks girls are pretty on a reasonably frequent basis, and has tried to marry at least four women thus far (not counting the unwanted engagements), but when it doesn’t work out he’s over it in 24 hours. Meanwhile he shows absolutely no interest in and never gives flattering depictions of 99% of the men in his life, but will praise Jeeves to anyone who will listen, wax poetic about his appearance (and get defensive on his behalf about it when a child insults it), and is absolutely inconsolable when they are separated.
(also Bertie is in no way allosexual. he is canonically terrified at the thought of reproducing. and due to the narrow but deep net on the other end I don’t imagine he’s going around sleeping with loads of men, either. that man’s either demi as hell or just entirely ace)
#red randomness#jeeves and wooster#bertie wooster#reginald jeeves#wooves#jooster#100 and up neat#finally determined my take on Bertie orientation and had to get the thoughts out#granted I have only read the first three short story collections + Extricating Young Gussie (re: none of the novels or last two stories)#so I can’t speak for the few stories following that or any of the novels#but this is my StanceTM#curious to see what that pastiche Jeeves and the Wedding Bells is like and whether or not it matches this#because if it’s focused on a Bertie het romance then I have trouble seeing it#he truly doesn’t seem invested enough in women for it to carry a whole book???#they’re more like crushes or cheery whims#while Jeeves is so close to his heart that he can’t bear to be without him. a source of comfort as a person beyond just what the man does#side note there are two pastiches I’ve heard about that put Bertie with Bobbie Wickham and that sounds untenable lmao#Bertie would be at his wit’s end#also I heard she gets a guy later anyway?? and at this point Bertie’s already fallen out of love with her besides???#truly the greatest sin of those two pastiches is separating him from Jeeves though. good fucking luck#it also sounds like the show is kinda different?? but I’ve never seen it#anyway I’m rambling without all the information so maybe this is total nonsense but hey!

I’m sorry but the criticism about the “chemistry” in Bridgerton Season 3 isn’t holding up, and it honestly feels like people are just making up excuses to be rude about Nicola Coughlan being plus-sized.
It’s not just Nicola who people are being vile about, there’s been so many people who’ve made cruel remarks about now Luke Newton looks, calling him ugly and insulting his acting.
Don’t get me wrong, there are most definitely issues with this season of Bridgerton and the writing, and it’s more than okay to prefer other couples, but mocking the actors like this is not okay, and it annoys me to see. Acting like it’s impossible for Colin to be attracted to Penelope is so gross, like okay, she’s not skinny, but she’s still absolutely stunning, get the fuck over it. It really makes me so happy to see someone whose body type is similar to mine being desired and loved like Penelope, like it just made me so thrilled to see.
But being for real, in my opinion, there’s no way that Colin and Penelope have worse chemistry or a worse story than Simon/Daphne given that Daphne marital-r*ped her husband 💀 the entire season isn’t even out yet, so let’s maybe wait until all the episodes have dropped to make judgements.
#bridgerton#polin#colin bridgerton#penelope featherington#nicola coughlan#luke newton#anti saphne#???#don’t get me wrong I was enjoying saphne but then THAT happened and yeah#it’s my least favourite Bridgerton book (so far) too#I’ve only read the first four but I number 5 is next on my reading list#tw fatphobia

2024 reads / storygraph
The Sword of Kaigen
standalone fantasy set in a rural mountain village at the edge of an empire that still holds traditional values, with families of powerful water/ice magic warriors
follows a powerful young heir who begins to question his beliefs about the empire when a new boy comes to his village from the city
and his mother, a housewife who has tried to forget her youth as a warrior and vigilante in the city since she moved back home to a loveless marriage
when there’s a violent attack on their village that they’re unprepared for, everything changes, and she has to embrace her old skills to protect her family and people
#The Sword of Kaigen#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#I’ve been meaning to read this for years and I finally got around to it! a really unique fantasy novel#I had always assumed this was ur average pre-industrial high fantasy and then was immediately hit with video games/tv in the first chapter#lmao. But overall (aside from the broader worldbuilding/politics) it is closer to the average ‘historical’ fantasy narrative -#so I can see why I got that impression#Some really compelling characters and interesting narrative structure that went in some unexpected directions.#It really focuses in on one village and how devastating a single battle in a war can be to their people - and how much work the recovery is#I feel like most sff is more concerned with a single person and/or the whole war so this felt unique. did also mean that the pacing was odd#- it's a slow start; then there’s a battle that must be hundreds of pages. The last section of the book feels a little too drawn out#and brings up random hanging plot elements that don’t really go anywhere. But I think overall this works for the story.#also one thing I didn’t love - cool complex interesting female character MC sure but also there’s weird moments like:#the first scene we see her is all the housewives comparing their attractiveness; she keeps referring to herself as an old woman (when she’s#and oh so meek and useless etc. And some of this feels like it’s part of the broader portrayal of the misogynist society#but some of it felt clunky or unintentional?#And then especially the end - when she and her shitty husband finally confront each other as equals and he apologises#she basically immediately forgives him and is like oh I was equally at fault because I am a meek woman who didn’t try either#like him realising he was wrong (and her realising he had a reason for being the way he was) doesn’t negate the fact that he treated her li#she acts like it was her fault for not trying too - when we have numerous examples of him berating her if she spoke up about anything?#like im glad he’s learning. but also that doesn’t mean she needs to suddenly forgive and love him wtf#that's the only real thing that annoyed me though.#also btw that 5yo seems kinda fucked up. are you guys gonna do anything about that

How Does it Feel to Read Classic Sci-Fi?
Orson Scott Card: Two of the most interesting books you’ll ever read if you’re willing to look past a handful of things. And then you find the planet of Chinese people who worship having debilitating OCD. And the Mormonism. And the fact that the author is wildly homophobic and ought to read his own books.
Robert Heinlein (or at least the Wikipedia Summaries): I guess that’s a neat concept—oh, it’s a sex thing. Um. Gotcha.
Ray Bradbury: Man, I gotta read this thing for class huh. Well here’s hoping it’s good! *three hours later* oh. that’s why he’s famous. this will stick with me forever and I will never look at the phrase ‘soft rain’ the same again. christ. And then repeat 3x.
Isaac Asimov: Wow, this is such an interesting concept! I wonder how the exploration of it will influence the plot! Wait, hey, are you going to add any characters? Any of em? No like, with character traits other than ‘robot psychologist’ and ‘autistic’ and ‘woman’? None of em? No, ‘detective’ isn’t a character trait. Those are all just facts. Aaaand now I’m bored.
Ursula K. Le Guin: Hah, get a load of this guy! He’s never heard of nonbinary people before. Lol, what a riot; how dumb do you have to be to comprehend that these people aren’t men *or* women actually? Oh, wait, what’s happening. Oh shit, it was about society and love and learning to understand each other? And now Im crying? And perhaps a better human being for it??
Andy Weir: Alright, this guy’s a really good writer. Funny, creative, knows so much engineering stuff…ooh, a new book! …I guess he can’t write women. Well, he wouldn’t be the first sci-fi writer…ooh another new book! And it’s more engineering problem solving and—wow. It’s not just women he can’t write. Please stop letting your characters talk to each other.
Lois Lowry: Oh, I remember this being fun when I was a kid! Wouldn’t it be fucked up to not see color? …upon reread, it would be fucked up to have your humanity stripped away, replaced with a tepid, beige ‘happiness’ for all time. Yeah.
Tamsyn Muir (let me have this ok): Haha, “lesbian necromancers in space” sounds fun. Lemme read this. Oh wow, yeah, this is right up my alley. OH GOD WHAT. NO. FUCK. OH SHIT WHAT IS EVEN HAPPENING AND WHY IS IT REFERENCING THE BOOK OF RUTH AND HOMESTUCK BACK TO BACK!!! AHHHHHHHHH!! Now give me more please.
#Late night book reviews with Bluejay#Not really#and it’s 1pm#If you’re curious which books#or just wanna read another essay:#Card: Ender’s Game and Speaker for the Dead are good* and the rest is Fucking Bonkers. Xenocide is the one called out specifically#Heinlein: Stranger in a Strange Land’s Wikipedia page but my understanding is it’s not the only book Like That#Bradbury: short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” will fuck your up; double if you check out the comic. See also “All Summer…” and °F 451#Asimov: I; Robot is the specific ref but also its sequel novels where you’d more expect real characters and not just fact lists also#Le Guin: Left Hand of Darkness specifically but also I just love her lmao#Weir: The Martian then Artemis then Project Hail Mary#Lowry: the only stuff of her’s I’ve read is The Giver Quartet but I was shocked how good it was upon revisiting. Damn. That’s pointed.#Muir: Gideon the Ninth and its sequels. They’re so good. Read them. You will be confused by book two. That’s on purpose. They’re so good.#Yes don’t come at me for my tag formatting; 140 chars isn’t a lot. You try getting all three Bradbury titles in there#Also the lack of commas is an issue#Anyways I would rec basically all of these if you like sci-fi save for SiaSL (haven’t read it) and all of the Ender’s Game/SftD spinoffs#Also if you do wanna read Card’s work pls get the books 2nd hand or from a library. Or via the 7 seas. His money goes to homophobia :(#But most of em are good and all of em are classics for a reason (save for Muir who really should be lmao)#Also also don’t come at me for including Weir; he’s one of the most popular sci-fi authors AND came up in the discussion that prompted this#As did everyone else except Muir because that one is actually just self indulgent.#I worked so hard to tag the first few things such that it would be clear there was an essay beneath the tag cut#Anyways tags for like actual categorization n such:#orson scott card#robert heinlein#ray bradbury#isaac asimov#ursula k. le guin#andy weir#lois lowry#tamsyn muir

every once and a while I think about how the narrative / characters in stormlight archive canon actively denied and downplayed kaladin’s experiences with oppression the second he became a radiant and a “light eyes” and the way that people in real life treat people that “pass” as white and “pass” as cis and “pass” as abled
sometimes I think about how shallans experiences as a light eyed woman led to her directly press on those wounds, about how she told kaladin he was wrong to be angry or distrustful of her, and how the narrative agreed with her. because even if it wasn’t directly her fault, shallan is a member of an oppressive class that quite literally forced kaladin to fight in pointless wars of pride and enslaved him, who were ultimately responsible for his brothers death, because to them tien was not a child. he was expendable.
shallan did not do bad things to kaladin directly, but the narrative treats his distrust and anger at light eyes as irrational when it is anything but. of course kaladin doesn’t trust her. of course kaladin is angry. she is not trying to be cruel, but sometimes ignorance feels a lot like cruelty.
sometimes I think about how the narrative and the people in it try to separate kaladin from his identity when he becomes a radiant. About how they say he is a lighteyes now, about how those around him try to tell him it doesn’t matter anymore. what happened to him doesn't matter. what happened to his family doesn’t matter. about how, potentially for the rest of his life, kaladin is going to have to sit in conversations with privileged people and listen to words that cut the wrong places, rub old wounds, but it’s okay, don’t be so dramatic, that’s not even you anymore, why are you so angry it was just a joke
I'm thinking about how they act like he isn't darkeyed, when that part of his identity will always be there, and about how it was stolen from him. about how the narrative says "you are now in a position of privilege, so you are not allowed to be angry that the color of your eyes determines what these people think you're worth"
I'm thinking about how he may not have dark eyes anymore, but he is still seen as 'less than' in some respects, about how he's treated like either a weapon or someone to be discarded, about how his life didn't matter to the people above them until he had something to give them. Until he was interesting enough.
I’m thinking about how the narrative tries to sterilize, steal, his identity and his anger and says those things are wrong.
And it makes me want to scream.
#Y’know I’ve only read the first two books in Stormlight#But this makes me angry#So so angry#Don’t even get me started on how moash is treated#it hurts a lot because it reflects real life and it infuriates me#And I love his writing but I do think that Sanderson wrote some of it insensitively#kaladin stormblessed#shallan davar#also this isn’t meant to be shallan hate#She was going through a lot and didn’t understand and she likely never fully will and that isn’t her fault#But it hurt me how the narrative itself treated their early interactions and power dynamics with each other#idk

All-Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder (2005) #1
#starting this book#I know it’s unpopular#and my assumption after reading this first issue is that the world it takes place in is too extreme for the story to completely work for me#but I’m into the tragic sidekick thing right now#and unhealthy relationships#and I’m not so emotionally invested in the Batman mythos to be bothered by ‘bad characterization’#that’s only for my favorite characters#also I’ve already read Robin: Year One and Legends of the Dark Knight issue 100 and Dark Victory#and Robin (1993) Annual 4 and Batman Chronicles: The Gauntlet#which I think would be the other obvious picks if I wanted to read a stand-alone story about Batman and Robin’s relationship#dc#bruce wayne#dick grayson#my posts#comic panels

Okay so I am back to reading Star Wars books, and I have JUST started Shatterpoint and I already know this books is gonna be great because..
No more than a couple pages in (it’s an e-book idk how many pages in the physical copy it is..it might be the first page idk 🤷🏻♀️) Mace Windu expresses regret over not killing Dooku on Geonosis
He’s overthinking and stressing over that decision and why he made it
And what is one of the reasons he couldn’t bring himself to kill Dooku?
Because they were friends
Because he LOVED HIM
Yeah. You read that correctly. Mace Windu loved Count Dooku. His words. Not mine. He used the word love. They were friends before Dooku left the order and Windu admits it to himself that he could not let him go, could not separate the jedi he knew with the man in front of him.
That’s right. Mace Windu. The man whom so many fans believe is a cold and unfeeling asshole.
That man, believes that he potentially allowed his love for the Dooku that was his friend stop him from killing him.
He thinks he might’ve
allowed his emotions to cloud his judgement
and cannot get over that feeling of regret.
And that is so goddamn important to me.
#like what a way to open this book#he had some good moments in the clone wars but this is really the first time ive seen him written this way so far#this immediately humanizes windu in a way the movies never got the chane to do#i always see people talk about how they think mace is an arrogant dick to everyone#that he thinks he’s above anyone who makes mistakes but this shows right away how untrue that is#not only does he know he makes mistakes…he will sometimes allow those mistakes haunt him#HE IS NOT PERFECT AND HE DOESNT THINK HE IS AND I LOVE THAT ABOUT HIM#i bet there are people who see stuff like this and go ‘well its not canon’#but to me canon is whatever I decide because consuming media is more fun that way#anyways I love mace windu#i love when the jedi are critical of themselves#i love star wars books#this is only the second legends book i’ve read and I can’t wait to read a bajillion more#also i looked up the proper use of the word ‘whom’ for this post which I feel needs to be appreciated#i’m also not confident at all that I used it correctly#star wars#mace windu#shatterpoint#shatterpoint by matthew stover#jedi#star wars novels#kate's post
