The Wild Robot, story and art by Peter Brown
Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, April 2016
Here's some of the illustrations in The Wild Robot. These are from Peter Brown's blog about the process behind creating the book.
Tumblr media
I also love this illustration, which is one of the earliest concept pieces Peter Brown did for the robot.
Tumblr media
When robot Roz opens her eyes for the first time, she discovers that she is alone on a remote, wild island. Why is she there? Where did she come from? And, most important, how will she survive in her harsh surroundings?
Roz’s only hope is to learn from the island’s hostile animal inhabitants. When she tries to care for an orphaned gosling, the other animals finally decide to help, and the island starts to feel like home. Until one day, the robot’s mysterious past comes back to haunt her…

Knowledge and Power
I've been thinking about this for a while. They are in Vasselheim now, Is the Horn of Orcus ok? Has it been unsealed? Did someone manage to sneakily steal it when the solstice happened? I NEED TO KNOW MATTHEW!!! I'm mid episode 104. I know we have a lot going on right now, but Matt keeps dropping hints about what's happening elsewhere in the world, like Desirat being released from their prison, all of Vasselheim's dead rising, stuff like that. I need to know about the Horn! Come on Matt, give us a problem for Campaign 4! lol. It's great storytelling, fleshing out the reality that Bells Hells are one group of many fighting the good fight and a lot of shit is currently on fire right now. I've loved every bit of it.
The Horn of Orcus was also the first and most prominent time the concept of dangerous knowledge came up in the game. Not just in a "knowledge is power" way, but in that, by knowing the information you are giving power to something bad and opening yourself up to trouble, literally just by possessing the knowledge in your brain. It's such an interesting concept to explore in a magic setting. How knowledge and worship and power intertwine.
I myself am very anti-censorship Irl, but the very rare times it's justified in my opinion are for things like recipes for horrific biological or chemical weapons, stuff like that. That concept can be broadened in the context of magic, like in C2 when reading that book gave Beau and Caleb magic eye herpes lmfao. Usually I am very much on the freedom of information side of things, so Ludinus threatening to share information was a bit of a meh threat to me personally at first. While it would be very disruptive in the short term, and people may indeed kill each other over it, I do think historical truths should be freely disseminated, not hidden for fear that people are too stupid to handle it. (Even though people ARE often too stupid to handle it, we have a right to our own stupidity I feel).
What I'm wondering is if Ludinus is making a subtler play than they are imagining. Yes divide and conquer is a good tactic, and that information will help him get people disagreeing. But more than that, shaking the faith of mass swathes of people all at once CAN'T be good for a Godly constitution. I don't think it's just about swaying people to his cause, I think he's trying to strategically weaken the God's power base before the big throw down with Predathos. Kind of like what Vecna did/ tried to do in late C1. So stopping Ludinus from sharing this information might end up being VERY important in the grand scheme of things.
Yes people already knew the Gods destroyed Aeor, and I think it was even known that the Primes and Betrayers formed a temporary truce to handle the threat. But knowing that information academically and seeing it firsthand are two VERY different things. Seeing the Primes care about and bicker with the Betrayers like... well...siblings, may come as a slap in the face to the truly devout. Also how many people actually knew that about Aeor or that Aeor even existed? Not everyone is proficient in history nor religious studies. Not to drag this too much into the real world, but how many religious people actually read whatever book they claim faith in cover to cover and know the whole history of it? It's definitely not all of them lol.
I bet there's plenty of religious people in Exandria that don't know shit about Aeor. Most people in Vasselheim probably would, because that place is THE God city on Exandria and survived the Calamity, but everywhere else? Unless they were specifically interested in religious history, why would they know it? So the reveal has the potential to be very impactful still, both for it's visceral feeling in exposing a peak into the God's relationships, and their deeds, and it will still be new info for some.

Just had to explain the premise of the Howl's Moving Castle book to a friend who has never seen the movie or heard of either story before and it went like so:
"So there's a 19 year old girl whose sisters set out to seek their fortune and she gets stuck working at the family hat shop and she has really poor self esteem so she's resigned to it but then she gets cursed by a witch to be an old woman so then she can't let her mum see her and she sets out to seek her fortune as well and finds the wizard howl's castle and he's got a really monstrous reputation of eating hearts but she reckons she's safe and then she makes a pact with a demon she likes to bully into making breakfast, adopts the live-in wizarding apprentice, and has to solve the mystery of a missing Prince and defeating the evil witch that cursed her all whilst comically repressing her emotions, performing accidental bouts magic, and screaming at a very melodramatic, dimension-hopping PHD student who possesses all the courage of a cracked egg and somehow convinced an entire world that he's some evil mastermind and they fall in love. Chaos ensues."
Tbh I think I did rather well.

SEASON 2 EP.8 SPOILERS AHEAD! Because I just watched the episode and I need to complain.
In season one, Alicent was told Rhaenyra would murder her children to secure her claim to the Iron Throne. Now, Rhaenyra admitted to her she would need to murder her children to secure her claim to the Iron Throne.
A few episodes ago, Rhaenyra claimed she would never condemn a mother to her same sorrow when the cold-blooded murder of Jaehaerys happened. Now, Rhaenyra condemns a mother to her same sorrow because she needs to kill Aegon, despite being assured he is malleable and might be willing to make peace due to his current condition.
A few episodes ago, Rhaenyra sought out Alicent because she was desperate to make peace, desperate to avoid spilling more blood. Alicent had no power to do such a thing. Aegon was mad because the Blacks murder his son, his councilmen listen to her no longer, and the war was raging. Alicent now has the power and is desperate to make peace. Aegon is broken, the council is weak, and Rhaenyra has now grown stronger. Rhaenyra says no.
Tumblr media
In season one, Alicent cared about her children. She was willing to take justice into her own hands when Aemond was maimed because he was her son. A son who lost an eye for telling the truth. An injustice that went unpunished (and I'm not talking about putting out Lucerys's eye in retribution, let's be sensible. I'm talking about a lecture at least) by Rhaenyra.
Now, Alicent betrayed her sons. She betrayed him and went to the same woman who allowed such injustice to remain unpunished. An injustice which transformed his son into the ruthless, callous man he is now. An injustice that will mark him for his entire life.
Alicent started a war to protect her people because she cares about her loved ones. Now, more than one person might be beheaded for treason. Her brother, her lover, her sons, and her father could most certainly die because she decided to betray them.
In case you didn't understood:
A mother, who begun a war to protect her children, now allowed them to be killed because she misunderstood.
A queen who sought peace so as not to shed more blood now requires more blood to be shed so she can make peace.
A mother who lost a son claimed she doesn't want to condemn another mother to her same sorrow, but admits to a mother that she must kill her son to secure her own claim.
I might be wrong, but it doesn't makes a lot of sense to me. Was Otto right all this time? Perhaps. I would like to know what the hell happened in the book and if this has an ounce of canon or not because, like—damn.
I really liked Team Green in season one. Aegon is my favorite character because I believe him to be the most complex one, Aemond was easy for me to understand because I could relate to him in some ways, Alicent made sense, and Helaena is adorable. However, I feel like the Greens made no sense in season two. I don't understand what Aemond is doing and Alicent is acting against everything she built in the previous season.
If anyone read the book, please do tell me how much they messed this up because I've seen some of you complaining. ❤️

“…… he would have liked to tell her again of his feelings for Elizabeth. He had tried to do this once before and it had nearly led for the second time to a break-up of their marriage. The good news that he then tried to convey to her, namely that his love for Elizabeth was no longer to be compared to his love for her, had somehow in the telling become pompous and condescending, and the terrible quarrel that ensued had led to her saddling her horse and being almost away before a last appeal from him had stopped her. So nothing good, certainly, would come of his reopening the wound after it had been healing for three years. Yet he would have liked to say:
‘Demelza, I met Elizabeth and we talked for the first time for years. At first she was bitter and hostile. But towards the end she softened and when we parted I kissed her. I’m still fond of her, in the way a man is for a woman he has once loved. I’m grieved for her predicament and would do much to help her. I tried deliberately to show my affection for her because it sears me to find her so hostile. I have an uneasy conscience about her for the two misdeeds I committed against her. One, I took her against her will–though in the end I do not believe it was so much against her will. But, two, I never went to see her thereafter and I believe to the first injury added a much greater injury for which it would be far more injurious to apologize. I would like to be friends with her again–so far as is possible considering whom she has married. The other evening I tried to make her think I still loved her–for in a way I truly do. But not in any way you need fear, my dear. Fifteen years ago I would have given the whole earth for her. And she hasn’t changed much, aged, coarsened, or become less lovely. Only I have changed, Demelza. And it is your fault.’”

Hey, thank you so much for answering all my questions! It helps! Curious about you saying "he had been very secretive, which created frustration for Louis and Claudia about their nature as vampires". In the movie he says he doesn't know anything because his maker never told him. Do we think this is a lie then? Is it a lie in the books? Do you recommend all the books or only select few? Are they all canon? I'm def interested in L&L centric stuff (don't think all books are?). Anyway, thanks again!
Hey, thank you so much for answering all my questions! It helps!
You're welcome 🌷
In the movie he says he doesn't know anything because his maker never told him. Do we think this is a lie then? Is it a lie in the books?
Yes and No!
TL:DR; I think some of us Lestat fans forgive him for keeping secrets from Louis and Claudia, it was partially for their safety.
Tumblr media
Well, when Anne Rice wrote IWTV, she didn't yet have much of a backstory for Lestat; since she didn't know the secrets he kept from Louis, neither did Lestat 😅 So I would say, no, he wasn't lying then (technically). If that was the only book in the series, then he was not lying.
Anne Rice also wrote the '94 IWTV movie script, and at that time, she HAD written Lestat's backstory in The Vampire Lestat, so at that point Lestat knew secrets that he withheld from Louis and Claudia. In fact, Tom Cruise had read the first 3 books in the series, so his performance is informed from this immersion in the lore; you can see the simmering beneath the surface as Louis asks him questions, trying to get anything out of him, and Lestat evading as much as he can, until he can't evade anymore and bursts out in frustration and pain. He KNOWS and wants to tell him so badly!
(Hit the jump, cut for length)
So in the movie, Lestat is lying to Louis and Claudia by saying he doesn't know the secrets, but it's kind of a partial lie, because his maker, Magnus, gave Lestat very little information. Magnus didn't tell Lestat about the origin of the vampires or what their place was in a religious context. Magnus just wanted to leave behind an heir to his wealth and power before he died.
However, Lestat did learn the origin story of the vampires from Marius. In order for Anne to solve the problem of why Lestat withheld this information from Louis and Claudia, she made a retcon: Marius threatens Lestat that if he tells the secrets to anyone, Marius would punish him, because he can't have anyone know where he is, which could threaten the safety of the entire vampire species.
Tumblr media
Marius threatens to crush Lestat to death or set him on fire with pyrokinesis, and that this punishment would include anyone Lestat told the secrets to 😭. So it's partly out of safety that Lestat won't tell Louis and Claudia those secrets.
Tumblr media
Marius underscores that Lestat's fledglings might not be ready for this knowledge anyway, it could be "a horror to them," so in not telling them, Lestat is also protecting them from the potential psychological damage.
Tumblr media
I think there's also some fanon that Lestat was afraid that in telling Louis and Claudia these secrets, that they might leave him, and that's a giant separate discussion, whether that counts as a form of abuse to keep them against their will. By telling them the secrets, they would have the knowledge of where to start looking for other vampires 😭 Which, again, is a safety thing for Lestat partly, because they were pretty weak as far as vampires go, and therefore vulnerable to more powerful vampires' attacks. And there are worse things than death for vampires.
Do you recommend all the books or only select few? Are they all canon?
I usually recommend reading all the books, even though there are some I prefer over others. How do you know what you will/won't like without trying them? Technically anyone can make the argument that all of the books are canon, but I treat the series like a buffet, as many book fans do, and so not everyone agrees which books are Truly Canon 😅
Tumblr media
But in general, if I had to choose, the first 3 used to be referred to as the Trilogy™ (derogatory), those are the most universally-loved, and some fans find that Anne Rice strayed from the parts that made canon so delicious after the third book. I would recommend reading them in order of publication because that's the order Anne Rice explored the stories and characters (even though the timelines do jump around and there are interesting discrepancies between different character's accounts of the same events!)
I'm def interested in L&L centric stuff (don't think all books are?).
Not all the books are L&L centric, but they often have a moment here and there even in books that are not specific to them, like Tale of the Body Thief. So, some shippers will skim through a book just to find any mention of their ship. Knowing the context of L&L's meetups in TOBT definitely enhances the flavor of their scenes together, so I would recommend reading that one, even though it's not considered canon for some fans 🤷 Delicious angst! The Feels! But that is one of the more Problematic books in the series, so it's up to you whether you want to give that one a try.
