ways they show each other love !
loads of rambles + clutter-less version below the cut
the yellow lines highlighting things is actually marking (almost) everywhere they touch since the primary theme of this piece is physical affection! the stars were just for fun
top left (kissing): pretty self explanatory! fun fact, it was the first thing i drew for this piece :)
top middle (hand on back): i was trying to sleep the other night and my brain suddenly went. drarry physical affection and that was the first thing i pictured! i kind of imagined this one as like... dracos stressed or something and harry just puts a nice comforting hand on his back
top right: the good ol pinkie hand hold,, link, ,think. yeah. no real thoughts behind this one. it fit the box and its cute
middle left (speech bubbles): one thing i see a lot (im pretty sure this is ((implied in)) canon as well, but dracos a big yapper! so its kinda showing here that harrys just listening to all hes got to say. probably my favourite one of the lot, i had fun rendering it. (looking at this post i too am a yapper)
middle (orange slices): theres this thing where you peel an orange for the people you love. you can look at it either way; draco providing food for harry, knowing his childhood food insecurity and always wanting to make sure he has something, or harry (whose love language is acts of service) giving something to draco, maybe after a long day
watermarked middle (draco constellation): just some fun symbolism i thought i might try to fit in
middle right (legs): in this theyre just chilling. dracos reading (the book didnt come across well ((i cant draw hands very well)).
right edge (flowers): these are narcissus flowers, also known as daffodils. a reference to narcissa malfoy, and also a reference i suppose to how she saved harry in the forest, because draco was alive, because harry saved him in the room of requirement
bottom left edge (flowers): these are lilies. partly to complete the circle of mothers saving sons saving the world, and partly because i wanted to fill space. (theyre fucking terrible to draw tho i do not recommend)
bottom left (hand in hair): well harrys hair is very luxurious as you can see and i imagine during cuddles draco cards his hand through it and teases out snarls and such. (i know hair pulling is something that can be seen as sexual, this isnt that and it isnt meant to be that and please dont see it as that :(
bottom watermark (stag): harrys patronus because why not
bottom middle: so this is a bit obscure but theres this post by @/iamnmbr3 that talks about a headcanon that they can share wands and its kind of special and intimate. so thats what ive depicted here. also for funsies harry has the draco constellation on his arm. not the big dipper. also i cant draw the dark mark for shit
bottom right (shoes): just a subtle way they can touch, not always big. just under the table or sitting on the sofa together, just to feel the other person there.
i knew i wanted a warm scheme and i knew i wanted orange and blue to play a big part in this. i was going to have warm colours on blue and cool colours on orange as a sort of contrast but that didnt end up working out.. the wand scene is an attempt at it except i mixed it up and made it cool on cool, its so washed out and i didnt bother to fix it
#this is my pride and joy#my art#drarry#drarry art#draco malfoy#harry potter#hp art#i will never make anything cooler than this /j#rendering this was so fun !#anyways i hope this gets more attention than that other doodle i did .. i worked hard on this one#im yapping too much its 3am time for me to eep. send post#made in csp#time taken: like 4 hours? idrk

Hello!! I've read all your hp works and I wanted to say that I love them all and they've made me feel feelings. The way you write drarry and just hp in general is very close to my heart.
That being said, there is a question I wanted to ask you as a writer. What does plagiarism mean and what does it constitute? Like... I hear that term a lot but just reading a definition is not making it clear to me. As far as I understand, copying someone's work, word by word is plagiarism. Does it also count as one if I copy someone's idea but just modify it a bit. Carry on is such a work and it's resemblance to hp and main pairs similarity to drarry are well known. Even hp itself has a evident similarity to Neil Gaiman's ‘The books of magic’ , at least as far as the titular character goes. It was also said that maybe jk stole the idea from there but Neil later said that it wasn't the case. So I'm guessing that's not plagiarism.
Let's take another example, I love you fic away childish things .. so if I wrote a fic with the same idea.. is that plagiarism? Or if I copy the plot? What if I liked a particular scene very much.. or a sentence very much and I used it as a base for a new fic.. or used that scene/sentence itself but in a different context is that plagiarism? I'm sure a lot of people have read Running On Air by eleventy7 in the drarry fandom. So if I use the sentence “Going away is easy, coming home is hard.” in a fic I write (maybe in another fandom or the same) does that count as plagiarism? Ofc I'm assuming that other people will know which scene or sentence I'm using on account of said fic being a famous work (in this case, fandom). But there could be a case where the source is not well known. What if I took something from a particular folktale of a community or country? Would that count as plagiarism? Jk Rowling herself has said that she used a lot of info while writing hp from various stories, folktales, religious books, lore and some good old tropes of said genre and pure imagination. Most of it was done unconsciously while writing. I guess it doesn't count as plagiarism if the place where you're copying from doesn't have a particular author (for eg folktales etc). Like.. God is not gonna sue me if I wrote things similar to some religious text. His followers on the other hand... yeah best not go there haha. But yeah.. what if I used different things from various sources, like.. just picking my way across it all and using them to write a story, just mish mashing things together like a collage and making something out of it. Will that be plagiarism? Or is that just being inspired by other art? On the other hand there is a saying that every art has a genesis and nothing is original. Every work is inspired by some other work be it art, music, writing or whatever. So where does one draw a line between inspiration and plagiarism?
I know it's a very long ask and I'm using a lot of scenarios but I wanted to cover everything that might come under the word 'Plagiarism'. What are your thoughts on it? What is included in plagiarism? Specifically, in writing.
If you made it this far thank you for reading where i essentially just ramble lol. I would like to know your answer and if you have any reading material on it please point me towards them. Thank you and I hope you're doing well xoxo
Plagiarism is copying word for word. It's one kind of stealing.
Copyright infringement is also a kind of stealing. That's a legal term about copyrighted material, but laws from some countries around this issue can maybe help clarify what is socially considered stealing and what is considered fair use. "Fair use" is also a legal term (at least, in the US); it refers to reasons you can use a copyrighted work without permission. I think that what many people socially consider "not stealing," even though its using someone else's ideas, falls under fair use.
Fanfic generally falls under fair use. The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW)--which is the organization behind AO3--argues that while fanfic uses things like characters and settings from copyrighted work, fic falls under fair use because it is creative and transformative.
The transformative part is important. If you copied Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone word for word and put it on AO3, that would be plagiarism. It's not transformed in any way. But if you write a story in which Harry and Draco fall in love, you're significantly transforming the story in a way that progresses the world of literature.
Other attributes of fair use (beyond whether the work is transformative) include whether the work is done for profit, whether the market for the original copyrighted work will be impacted negatively by the derivative work, and how substantially the derivative work uses the original copyrighted work. Fanfic uses the original copyrighted work quite substantially in many cases, but if it doesn't impact the market for the original copyrighted work and isn't done for profit, that shouldn't disqualify it from fair use. This is why it's extremely important never to ask for money for a fanfic, and why any author doing that should be reported to the hosting site.
Now, you asked about the Harry Potter series. While JKR may have gotten ideas about kids attending magical schools from other books, HP differs significantly enough that whenever she was sued for copyright infringement, she won her cases. Some might call JKR's books a ripoff of other books like it, but most agree that while not terribly original, these books do not count as stealing. (I would add, though, that just because someone wins a case doesn't mean it's not stealing. Disney steal shit all the time but wins cases because they own everything.)
You also asked about Carry On. I would say about that series, too, that it is substantially different enough from other books, that it doesn't count as stealing. There are just lots of books about kids secretly going to magic school, as it turns out. But I would add that even if there were more similarities to HP than there are in Carry On, Carry On could not be considered theft, because it is transformative.
Carry On, like Lev Grossman's The Magicians, is in a conversation with books like Harry Potter, books about magical schools and books with young, Chosen One protagonists. Carry On is not a fanfic; the characters are not the same; the set-up is not the same; the plot is not the same. But it is a book that asks questions about Harry Potter, and other books like Harry Potter. It's asking, what does it mean to be the Chosen One? Isn't there something sinister about a supportive mentor figure who pushes young people into war? Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games is also in a conversation with books that have young Chosen Ones, and it asks the same questions. Carry On further asks, isn't there a strange chemistry between the archetypal Golden Boy protagonist and the archetypal schoolmate antagonist? That's something tons of high school romance stories ask, and tons of HP fics, but it wasn't something that hadn't yet been done in a magical school Chosen One series--not with homosexuality--which also makes it pretty damn transformative.
You asked about using a line from Running on Air in a different work. This is plagiarism, because it's the exact words. Using that sentence in any work would be plagiarism. Using the exact sentence that someone else wrote, not matter how well known the work, is plagiarism. You likely won't be sued, but it's still stealing in most cases.
Now, it could be acceptable to use a phrase from the sentence to reference Running on Air. You'll see this in a lot of older literature. You'll see a little phrase in quotes that isn't credited, but your Penguin footnote will tell you they were referencing another author there. That was common because everyone was expected to have read the same body of work in certain cultures.
In fandom, lots of people will have read the same fics, so it could be a nod to another author to quote their work in a fic of your own. That's generally not the culture, mostly because the reason authors would do that had more to do with literary ideas that story telling, and most fic has a focus on storytelling. And, because fandom is a non-professional community where it's easy to reach out directly to the authors, if you do want to quote something by a different author, the author should be asked--again, because that's the culture.
Some material is so often quoted that it's idiomatic. If you say "I put away childish things" in a work, that may be from the Bible, but most people know where it's from, and even if they don't, it's part of our language now. Same would be true if I put in a work "Parting is such sweet sorrow," which is from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Few would call it stealing if I didn't credit such sentences, but if you're not sure whether it's idiomatic, a place where you're using the exact words should be credited with a footnote or citation.
You asked about using a line from a folk tale. As you say, folk tales often don't have known authors--but more importantly for your question, they usually don't have definitive versions. There are literally thousands of versions of Cinderella. If you used an exact sentence the Brothers Grimm used in their version of Cinderella, that would be plagiarism. Any exact language from an extant version of the story would be the same way.
A lot of what I'm saying is about how law works (particularly in the US), which deals with what might be socially acceptable in terms of whether something is stealing or not. But many cultures do have oral traditions that have a specific way a story is told. I would argue that's still a specific version, and if you're quoting the exact language, it's still stealing. But lots and lots of cultures have stories they like to tell but always tell it a little different, in which case you might be stealing ideas but not plagiarizing. And some things that are said enough, such as "Once upon a time" and "And they lived happily ever after" are idiomatic and not consider plagiarism.
But idioms touch on an interesting topic related to idea theft, which is how likely it is that you came up with something on your own, or that anyone could without the original text. The line you quoted from Running on Air is unique, but the idea that coming home is hard is commonly accepted. Indeed, there is an idiom that states "You can't go home again," which refers to the difficulty of coming home again.
Therefore, if someone said, "Going home is difficult," it might be a paraphrase of the sentence from Running on Air, but it might also be a paraphrase of the idiom, and it would be a little silly to call that plagiarism. Paraphrasing can be plagiarism, but it depends on a) how closely the paraphrase hews to the original, b) how much is paraphrased (as soon as you're paraphrasing more than a line, it really starts to be plagiarism), and c) whether someone could reasonably come up with it themselves.
So, if someone said, "Leaving home isn't difficult, but going home again is," that paraphrase is a lot more directly related to the original sentence and could be considered plagiarism. However, in a story without any other Running on Air references or similarities, I would assume an author came up with that based on the idiom and would never even dream of accusing them of plagiarism. But if the next two sentences were also similar to lines from Running on Air, I'd get suspicious.
In fact, the original line you quoted is close enough to the idiom that if I read it in a different story, I might assume that the author hadn't remembered that that line was from Running on Air. This has definitely happened to me--I used a line or phrase that I thought was mine, but I actually got it from somewhere else. If you're doing it consciously, you shouldn't. With paraphrasing, I think it's a little dicier; some would say if you're consciously paraphrasing anything it's a problem, but if you know you read that line from Running on Air but also know you've thought about that idiom about coming home a lot, it might be fine to say something sort of similar, as long as it's not the same and as long as you're not taking other things.
The same is true with ideas. You asked about Away Childish Things. If you read that fic and decided to write a fic about Harry de-aging, you might have been inspired by me, but it isn't stealing because de-aging is a common trope in fandom. You could've come up with it yourself or by reading any number of things. You asked about the plot; if you wrote a story in which Harry and Draco got to know each other by identifying illegal potions and then while doing some of that work together, Harry got de-aged and later Draco got de-aged, I would still say that this is a plot you could have thought of yourself. If you wrote a story in which everyone was infected by a potion that was like Imperius, meaning Harry only trusted Draco to help him, and Harry de-aged, and then to cure him Harry re-aged and then Draco de-aged, and could only re-age one year at a time, dealing with all of their Hogwarts years again and revealing Draco's history with his mentally ill mother and Muggle dating, I would say...okay, that's hewing pretty closely to Away Childish Things and feels a bit like you took something from me.
If you called a shop in your fic Tailored Tinctures, that's very specific, and I would say you took something from me. If you had an indicator solution in which you had to dip your thumb and your thumb turned cerulean to indicate a positive, I would say you took something from me. For these kinds of questions, it has to do with the amount you took but also the specificity of it.
As I mentioned, fandom has its own culture. Usually if you get an idea from someone else it's a very good idea to drop that author a line and say, "Hey, I got inspired, do you mind if I do?" But I don't do that when there are a hundred fics that all have the same idea, because by then it's starting to be fanon, and using fanon is not considered in this culture to be stealing.
Different people have different ideas about this, but I do feel that I'm pretty close to the general thought on this. Some people will say that any time you are inspired by anything you must credit, or you must ask, or you must never use it to begin with. But most of us are inspired by things all the time, and the only times we claim we aren't are the times when we really can't remember what the original inspiration was, or when things are so jumbled that ten different things inspired one idea. In those cases it isn't true that we aren't using other works, only that we can't identify them.

So when first asked to identify Harry, Draco doesn't do it but he stammers a bit and kind of prevaricates. But now he doesn't hesitate. He's made up his mind. As surely as he is now certain that he is looking at Harry Potter he is also certain that he's not going to be the one to reveal that fact. And he actually turns his back and walks away and refuses to be a part of it. Even knowing what the means, what it will cost him and his family.
And remember, Harry's appearance is altered but not so much that the Snatchers didn't suspect his true identity. There is no way that Draco, who in 6th year identified Harry by a glimpse of his shoe and the sound of his breath, did not recognize him.
(Incidentally this is one of the scenes I love in the movie because you can see the moment the penny drops and he realizes exactly who is in his drawing room and the momentousness of this moment and of the decision he must now make.)
I think it's notable that Draco looks both reluctant and fearful. Obviously he's reluctant to have a hand in Harry's death. And I think the fear comes from several things. I think it's fear of what will happen if Harry escapes, and an even greater fear of what will happen if he doesn't.
Draco knows what he's risking by giving Harry a window of opportunity and he's afraid of the punishment he and his family will endure if Harry gets away and of course he's afraid of how much worse it will be if it's discovered that he intentionally withheld the truth about Harry's identity. And yet despite everything he has been taught and despite the fact that he's never prided himself on his bravery, he is still even more afraid of the idea that it will all be for nothing, that Harry won't get away and will die right here in Draco's own drawing room.
Also. Nobody else comments on how afraid and reluctant Draco looks so I think he does a decent job of concealing it. (Given that he's alive after this incident we know Voldemort certainly never figured out Draco didn't immediately identify Harry on purpose). Harry just knows him so well he sees right through it.
And my drarry heart LOVES how throughout this whole scene Harry thinks of him as Draco. He starts thinking of him as Draco when he sees him forced to tortured Rowle and only reverts to "Malfoy" during the Room of Requirement confrontation. Because in this moment something in Harry knows Draco isn't truly his enemy.
Also I wonder if Narcissa also saw through Draco's facade of ignorance and started to suspect how he feels about Harry - that what she once might have taken for jealousy or perhaps a shallow infatuation isn't that at all but rather something much more powerful and deeper. Maybe that's why in the end she expected Harry to know where Draco was, even in the midst of the battle.
#It's notable that after this moment she stops pushing Draco to identify Harry and doesn't join in the calls to bring Voldemort.#drarry#hpdm#harry/draco#Draco Malfoy#Draco Malfoy meta#drarry meta#Harry Potter#hp reread#harry potter and the deathly hallows#Harry Potter meta#meta#my meta#my post

2023.12 ~ Top 5 longest fics posted on AO3
1. The Man Who Forgot by @slightweasel [E, 250k]
►After ten years of marriage, Harry forgets. The more things change, the more Draco Malfoy is still up to something.
2. Conjuring Cupid by @sugarplum-senpai [M, 89k]
►Two decades after Hogwarts, Harry's toy shop is ready for the busiest season of the year. Bolstered with an ever-growing work list, plenty of tea, and a sentient puppet always looking for mischief, his life is full. Still, at the end of the day, he’s lonely, and as the boy who lived his search looking for a match is disastrous. When his friends register him for an anonymous dating service, he’s unconvinced. Then again, maybe not knowing each other’s faces right away might just give him everything he’s longing for.
3. City of Quartz by ladygoodman [M, 57k]
►[...] It's 2012, and the granddaughter of Celestina Warbeck is pronounced dead at her home in Los Angeles. Auror Harry Potter finds the case file a little too familiar with other celebrity deaths cropping up all over the UK. The Dark Mark is making an appearance on young witches and wizards as well. There are only a few former Death Eaters who haven't been locked away in Azkaban, and Draco Malfoy is one of them. On that suspicion, Harry follows his tracks all the way to sunny Los Angeles, where he's faced with an entirely new caliber of celebrity culture. Who is Caelum West? How is he mixed in with all of this? And why does he look exactly like Draco Malfoy?
4. Nervous? by @invisible-nerd-girl [T, 46k]
►Harry gets drunk at a party, only to remember a game he over heard muggles talking about. He ends up playing with Draco who doesn't back down. Much to his surprise, it doesn't end there.
5. If I win, lose, or draw, there’s a winner in us all by MystMelody [E, 41k]
►Sixteen years ago, Harry and his England team suffered World Cup heartbreak following an agonisingly close loss at the hands of a single, incorrect umpiring decision. Many years and two World Cup victories later, and Harry is (mostly) sure that he has moved on. As Harry’s final tournament before retirement looms, he is confident that his team have what it takes to lift the trophy a third time - no matter what anyone else might say. Especially Malfoy, who has reinvented himself as a successful Quidditch reporter and seems determined to write as many awful things about the team as possible. [...]

what artists do you like on pixiv👉👈i am not really in the know about that website lol
...This is because I talked about tall Sirius, isn't it? 🤣 Well, I'm more of a tag scroller than anything and these are the relevant tags: dog/deer, sirije, deer/dog. The last is the tag for bottom Sirius and does fall prey to the usual modern fandom problems, though they at least make the boys the same height.
As for favourite artist it is Nipye, Nipye hands down. But she rode her Prongsfoot (and Tomarry, Jily, Drarry) fame into a legitimate career as a manhwa artist and nuked her accounts. All we have left is Naruto. I suspect a couple more artists have also ridden their Prongsfoot fame into paying careers because the dog/deer tag seems to have shrunk from 100+ works at the beginning of the year to just 80+ when I checked just now.
Maru is another artist I really like for their watercolour style drawings. They're a prolific HP fanartist in general and still actively updating. It might take a bit of digging to get to the Prongsfoot stuff (and since we're not in Japan, we're shit out of luck with their Prongsfoot anthology doujinshi). They also draw James and Sirius being super cuddly even in gen Marauders fanart and I am eternally grateful. Have Sirius and James with baby Harry as a bonus.
Pubupu11 is half the dog/deer tag at this point and I really love their Sirius. Pictures from this art log are reposted particularly often on Pinterest, though notice those cowards never repost the ones where Sirius is kissing James hard. There is no end to the good stuff with pub. Sadly their last post was on James' birthday this year.
Nodafuji does fancomics and has less work up. Nothing Can Start Now works even if you can't read Japanese (and the look of devastation on Sirius' face is haunting). This alpha!James/alpha!Sirius fancomic is also good if you don't mind running it through google translate.
Mon does mainly deer/dog, so the uke-ification is there but I find it bearable. These two pieces of art live in my head rent-free for starters. Here is Sirius laying down James' wand at his grave. This is for the bottom!Sirius Fest, where there's a wordless bit in the middle where Padfoot transform into Sirius before jumping into James' arms that really gets me every time.
#spooky-albi-bumblebee#Prongsfoot#Bambibelle#This is for everyone else who wants to get a glimpse of non-English speaking fandom

Terrible People, a Drarry Fic (Chapter One: Men Are Shit)
Terrible People | Chapter 1/9 | Rated E
The Gay Cruise fic™️ is here! Thank you so much to @getawayfox (for creating wonderful art as well as being an amazing cheerreader and friend) and to @citrusses for the best cheerreading and beta/alpha advice! To all of you who have had to hear me go on and on about this for... well, over a year. Here you are. I hope you enjoy. Chapters will be posted on a weekly basis.
Tags: EWE, minor Harry/Charlie, past Draco/Zacharias, background relationships, romance, romcom, meddling friends, beaches and beach holidays, cruise ships, clubbing, summer holidays (in september), truth or dare, adults playing games designed for teenagers, Harry is in a silly goofy mood, Draco has a dog called Hermes, Healer!Draco, Sports Media Mogul!Harry (but really he just sits around all day buying art from Sotheby's), Drarry in their (late) 30s, pining, FWB, FWB to lovers, smut
-
What happens when Harry and Draco end up on the same Muggle gay cruise? They certainly didn't plan for it to happen (but their friends might have). They're stuck with each other for a week, they might as well make the most of it, right?
Featuring a holiday-long game of Truth or Dare, a very ill-judged FWB proposition, decades-long pining, lots of gin, and a small pair of green swimming trunks.
🍸🛳🩴☀️🕶
“We thought about a cruise, but we wanted something less wild, you know?” Justin says.
Draco hums distractedly, looking at the buildings around them, at the milky blue and burnt-orange sky as true night draws in closer.
“We did see a cruise aimed at singles,” Ernie says. “Single gay men, I mean.”
Draco pauses. He makes a face. “Thank you, but no thank you.”
“It’s Muggle,” Justin adds excitedly. “Draco, you should see it. It’s stunning! The boat, I mean—it’s huge. Top of the line. Four swimming pools. Four! And a fully kitted spa and gym.”
“A cinema, a theatre, loads of bars and clubs and restaurants,” Ernie says. “We think you’d love it.”
Draco frowns. “What on earth makes you think I’d love it? I haven’t been out clubbing since I hit thirty, you know that. And,” he adds dramatically. “I hate boats.”
He doesn’t really. His feeling on boats in general is pretty neutral, but he knows where they’re going with this, and he’s not having it.
So he stands, resolute, on his lie.

don’t hold me like you know me
“Oh, golden boy, don’t act like you were kind. You were mine, but you were awful every time.”
[ i’m going to need y’all to forgive me in advance for this one. i saw a beautiful collage earlier using the above lyrics from bleachers’ “merry christmas, please don’t call,” and, well.. here we are. i will say, it’s not all so very bad. i don’t know that it’s a happy end, but there’s a glimmer of something there. cheers! ]
drarry | angst, nonlinear, draco pov | word count: ~2.6k | rating: m | warnings: physical violence, drinking, implied mental health concerns
_ _ _
The streets are sleek with the midwinter showers, and the rain itself should have been an omen: harsh, pelting, unforgiving.
Draco’s coat is drawn tightly around him, hands tucked in the illusory warmth of his pockets. There’s a roast waiting at home (the slow cooker hopefully having worked according to the instructions), and the promise of a hearty meal is the singular motivation that has gotten him through a particularly tedious day at Gringott’s.
His focus had been diverted to this very thought— it’s the only reasonable explanation for why he didn’t see him sooner. Every other near-brush carefully avoided, every pass through the streets of Diagon painfully aware. But the rain and the roast had lulled him, dulled him, and before it can be helped, Potter has careened from the new apothecary and directly into Draco.
Draco is nearly bowled over, his feet almost coming out from beneath him entirely as his heart does a horrible scrabble in his chest. Harry catches him, of course, polite and apologetic, murmuring a quick, “Oh, I’m so—” before catching sight of Draco. His hands, gentle around Draco’s shoulders, snap swiftly away.
“Oh, Dr— uh, Malfoy,” his mouth drawing tight, his jaw a harsh tic. His gaze shifts down the street, back into the shop, then drags over Draco, his hand crumpling around his brown paper parcel as he nods at him sharply, an acknowledgment or a dismissal or something else equally inscrutable. He stalks off down the street.
It’s worse, really, than Draco had imagined it might be, seeing him again, after… well, after. He’d worried of a scene, a shouting match. That he himself would fight, or else that he’d fawn and fumble and fall back in, all forgiven.
This is worse— the sheer nothing of it is worse.
Draco gathers himself, having stood, (how long?) too long on the street, stricken. He collects himself and walks home, where a mediocre roast is waiting.
The worst part, really, is that Draco had noticed the purple rings under his eyes, and known (too knowing) that he must still be sleeping poorly.
. . .
Potter is fucking into him, and Draco can hardly breathe, but really, that seems of little consequence in the context. He heaves a shaky breath as Harry mutters something low in the back of his throat about hating him, and Draco can only snap back, pathetic, “I hated you first.”
The fact that he doesn’t hate him now, that he can’t hate him now, is, too, of little consequence.
Harry had burned into his life like a fire, an ill-fated handjob in a pub loo that transfigured into a flurry of angry letters sent back-and-forth via Owl post, Harry showing up on his stoop, pounding on the door, then the sex, hot and biting, and Draco, the next time, dragging him through the unlocked Floo, and then just not bothering to lock it again after, an unspoken and open invitation frequently used.
A fire, yes, but the fickle sort.
. . .
Gringott’s had a required minimum on the guest list for the annual Wix Wellness Worldwide fundraising gala, and Draco had pulled one of the four short straws. He was doing his level best to blend with the wall furnishings, a firm grasp on the glass of wine he’d been nursing through the night.
Potter was here. He would be, of course, but Draco’s managed to avoid him thus far, his reflexes on high alert.
The unfair thing, though, is that it is exponentially more difficult to avoid someone who is actively looking for you. Draco had caught sight of him at the edge of the dance floor, head swiveling, gaze casting over the crowd, and had shrunk back, ducking behind a particularly ostentatious floral arrangement. Potter, though, had been an excellent Seeker for a number of reasons, and as Draco is slipping around the corner into a nearby enclave, a familiar voice stops him in his tracks.
“Funny seeing you here.”
He’s frozen, a moment, his heart a stammer beneath his suit, before he turns, expression shuttered. Guarded.
“A work engagement, I assure you. I’ll be gone soon.”
Harry’s face is more open, now, than that day on Diagon, something having softened, but he’s being careful, too.
“Not on my account, I hope. It’s a nice party. You should enjoy it.” He raises a glass to Draco, the tiniest smile flickering over his face, before he turns and melts back into the crowd.
Draco is left, again, stricken, again. The emptiness, the pointlessness of the exchange aches and claws at him, cruel perhaps, or at least preposterous, in light of all they had done, what they had been or not-quite been.
He grabs his cloak from the coat room, attendance requirement be damned, and apparates home (where a perfectly fine roast is waiting).
Never mind that he felt some relief (curses) that Harry’s eyes were clearer, his facade better-rested.
. . .
Draco doesn’t mean to be tender, but it’s hard, when Potter is the way he is.
Not always— it’s easy to fight with him when he’s itching for it, up on his high horse and merciless, caustic. Days when the past is closer and crowding, breathing heavy down his neck.
But there are the other moments, fleeting as they may be, when he goes quiet and contemplative, when he seems at ease in Draco’s bed. More at ease, anyway, than anywhere else.
“I wish, sometimes, that things had been different,” Harry murmurs, Draco curled half over him, head resting on his chest.
Draco runs a hand soft across his side, easing. “I know,” he says, feeling buoyed, foolishly, by the thought. Feeling, in turn, sunken.
The wishing, he is quickly reminded, doesn’t make it true. Makes the truth a bitter sort of thing.
“I wish—” Harry shifts from underneath him, drawing away from the covers and up, suddenly pulling on his jeans. He sits on the edge of the bed, turned away from Draco, eyes downcast. “I wish you were someone different.”
“Get out,” Draco snaps, pointless, Harry already making for the Floo, already leaving.
. . .
The bar is crowded and the kind of loud that makes it easier to be out with Blaise and Theo, catching only every other musing.
Draco is two shots and a gin & tonic deep when they spill through the front door, a cacophony all their own, elevating the soundscape. A gaggle of Gryffindors & co., Potter, naturally, at the fringe. Draco works to make his face stay something subtle, composed, and Theo rolls his eyes as Blaise says something unintelligible about ‘all the gin joints in all the world.’
He can’t leave without rousing suspicion, and he can’t stay without losing his mind. So, he orders another round of shots, and Blaise takes one graciously, and Theo takes one carefully, slanting him a glance only a little on the side of concern.
He’s moved to a gin fizz, feeling marginally less on edge, when the warm hand lands on his side, and his whole body goes to ice.
“Hello, stranger,” Harry says warmly, the faint smell of whiskey on his breath, and he slowly pulls his hand away, placing it on the bar to wave down the tender.
Draco’s world is ready to tip sideways, and his friends are on the dance floor, which may as well be a million meters away. He blanches, eyes going wide as he turns towards Harry then takes a shaky step back. He looks good, which is its own little tragedy, making Draco’s heart do a complicated pirouette.
It’s not fair, he thinks lamely, and of course it’s not, but when has it ever been?
“I like this shirt,” Harry says, tugging at the hem, an easy smile on his lips. The fabric is lightweight, a pale blue. “This color always looked nice on you.” Draco makes a mental note to burn it (or else to keep it somewhere safe).
Harry keeps his hands to himself, now, mouthing at the lager the bartender deposits before him. Distance, respectful, Draco supposes, but he still feels the lick of the flames at his heels.
He can’t think of a single thing to say, not anything worth putting into words. His throat feels dry, and he downs his drink.
“Gin?” Harry asks, knowing, preparing to wave the bartender down again.
“No,” Draco answers quickly. “Vodka, actually. And I was just leaving.” He turns, and feels a tug at his shirt again, Harry’s fingers catching.
“Draco, please, I—”
“Don’t,” Draco hisses, and it comes out just as warbly as he feels. “Potter, I’m asking you. Let go.”
Harry releases him, an unhappy look falling over his perfectly-fucking-well-rested eyes.
Draco wades onto the dance floor just long enough to tell his friends goodbye, and as he makes for the door, he does not look back.
At home, he pulls his tupperware from the fridge, picking at the leftovers of yesterday’s roast straight from the container until his stomach ceases its swilling.
. . .
He had gone to Harry’s, that last time, and it had been a mistake.
He’d been living in Grimmauld, then, and the whole place, while never exactly inviting, was even worse for wear. It had been an accident, sort of, that they wound up there— in a rush, convenient, tearing at one another’s clothes in the front hall, leaving a trail up the stairs.
It’s after, when he’s gone to the kitchen for a glass of water, that things fall apart. He can’t find a glass, what for the dirty dishes scattered on every surface, and then realizes after poking through them for one to wash that Harry doesn’t seem to have any glassware at all. He settles on a mug, which he washes with the ratty dishrag behind the sink and then fills from the tap.
Draco can’t seem to help himself, moving through the house in the quiet of night, Harry tucked in bed upstairs. He’s looking for a sign of him anywhere, though, and coming up clueless.
No photos, no trinkets, not even a magnet on the fridge or a jacket hanging in the hall. The bin is full to overflowing, and all of the furniture is old, inherited, ill-used and showing it. His cupboards are near empty, and the bookcases are so covered in dust that it’s evident none of the books within them are his. It’s eerie, a bit, but more than that, Draco simply finds it sad. Lonesome.
Draco’s own flat is nothing to write home about, sure, but it is still, in some way, his. In some way, home.
Grimmauld feels… haunted. Empty.
He pads upstairs, mug in hand, and Harry stirs as he settles back in the bed, resting upright against the pillow.
“Hello, stranger,” Harry mumbles, sleep-and-sex-slurry, rolling to Draco’s side, wrapping an arm around him.
Draco’s fingers go to his hair, curling through it, soothing, too soft for what this is.
“We should go to the grocery in the morning,” he says (softly), and Harry stills then shifts, gaze lifting, squinting up at him.
“What?”
“The grocery. I’m starving, and you’ve got nothing in the fridge. I thought we might make breakfast.”
Harry pulls back, still processing, waking, turning on his side as he fixes Draco with an unreadable look.
“Why?”
Draco, unsettled, works to walk it back, to make light.
“Fuck, Harry, I didn’t think it was a big deal. I just— I thought it couldn’t hurt. We could make some food, do some washing up. You can just say no, God.”
Harry’s brow furrows. “Wash—?” He catches sight of the mug in Draco’s hand, and a flush crawls up his throat. “Why were you in the fucking kitchen?”
Draco feels his jaw set, defensive. “What do you mean, why was I in the kitchen? I was thirsty, I got a drink.” He lifts the mug demonstratively.
Harry sits upright suddenly, rising out of bed. “You should go,” he says, low, a stormy look coming over his eyes, already dark with exhaustion.
Draco freezes, before fury slams into him like a freight train. “What the fuck?” he answers icily, clambering out of the bed. “You’re serious?”
“Yes,” Harry answers, gesturing towards the Floo.
“Why? Over groceries? Grow up,” Draco rumbles.
“I didn’t ask you to go poking around in my shit,” Harry snaps back, moving towards him across the room. “My groceries and my dishes and my life are none of your business.”
“I was trying to help,” Draco snarls, his eyes fierce on Harry’s.
“I didn’t ask for that,” Harry answers, something hot and tremulous snaking into his tone.
He reaches suddenly for Draco’s wrist, snatching it in his hand and turning it upward, the mug slipping from Draco’s grasp with the force, clattering with a crash to the ground. The inky underside of his forearm looks sickly in the dim lamplight, exposed.
“Why would I ever ask you for that?” Harry growls, his fingers digging at the Mark.
His grip is harsh, and Draco grits his teeth against the shock of pain, finding it harder, though, to guard against the jolt that rakes through his heart.
“Let go,” he seethes, and Harry, slowly, releases him, blinking at his own hands as Draco grabs his cloak from the floor.
“Draco,” Harry calls as he moves for the Floo, but he doesn’t stop. He steps through into his own living room, Harry’s voice still ringing behind him.
“Mal—”
He reaches quickly for the mantle, slicing his wand across it to lock it, to cut the connection.
The Floo goes dark.
Draco sinks to his couch, cradles his wrist (tender), and wishes he were anybody else.
. . .
Luna’s hosting the party to celebrate the sighting of pixies in her back garden, a response to her recent research and restorative efforts. Draco has nearly talked himself out of going half a dozen times.
In the end, he goes, swearing a commitment to two hours— no more, no less.
In the end, it wouldn’t have mattered how much time he committed. Any time around Potter now was, well, was… (Devastating. Painful. Unbearable.) Was too much.
Harry is late, which, initially, makes things easier. Draco makes polite conversation with Luna and Padma Patil and Hannah Abbott. They start in on the food, and Draco takes a stroll around the garden, sticking to the well-worn, specifically designated paths Luna has charted through it. He spots no pixies, but the plants throughout are lovely.
He arrives back at the house, and he ought to have been expecting it.
“This roast is really good. Who brought it?” Harry is asking.
“Oh,” Luna says with a smile, catching Draco’s eye as he slips in through the back door. “Draco did.”
Harry turns to him then, eyes wide, before he settles into something softer. “Hi.”
“Hello,” Draco answers, clicking the door shut behind himself.
“Your roast is excellent,” Harry says, casting a careful smile.
“Thank you,” Draco answers. “I’ve been working on the recipe.”
“It’s paid off,” Harry says. He points to the counter. “I brought pigs in blankets, if you’d like any. I’m gonna—” He gestures to the living room, where the rest of the guests have gathered for a presentation Luna’s prepared.
Draco feels a bit unsteady, with the casualness of the conversation, the closeness that hasn’t reached into claustrophobia.
“Sure,” he answers.
Harry tips his drink at him, juice in a compostable paper cup. “It’s good to see you.”
After he goes, Draco settles against the kitchen counter, considers the pigs in blankets.
Serves himself another helping of roast.

hiii i just breezed through that slutty drarry reclist wheww you’re doing god’s work what a wonderful list!!!! i see you’re getting a lot of asks lately so feel free to answer this (or not!!) whenever you feel like it, but i was wondering if you knew of any fics where harry gives up his slutty lifestyle for draco, sort of like “harry potter gives a shit” by talithan. i would prefer if it was harry but the vice versa is also fine! we’re so lucky to have you in this fandom and i feel grateful every time i see your posts on my dash, thank you so much for everything!!! <3
Hello my friend! Love that for us, I’ve had lots of fun putting that slutty reclist together and am always happy to find taste twins when it comes to smut 😏 personally I’ve been more into open relationships lately but you might enjoy these fics where either Harry or Draco have casual sex before getting together:
Harry:
Amber by @slytherco (E, 4.7k)
Despite his numerous flings, Harry's thoughts keep circling back to Draco, only half-aware of his perpetual draw where they're not strangers, not-quite friends, but definitely something. When they both get played by the same person, Harry and Draco find a way to get back at him, and maybe get something extra out of it as a result.
100 Beats per Minute by @oknowkiss (E, 14k)
When Draco left the Magical World behind at nineteen, he didn't expect the cusp of thirty would find him comfortable and secure, with a stable life and a successful career as a sex columnist.
Five Weddings and a Potions Accident by lauren3210 (E, 19k)
In which Harry thinks he’s a playboy, everyone else knows better, and Hermione will kill Seamus if Ron tries to collect on that bet.
Famous by @fw00shy (E, 24k)
It's a couple of years after the war, and Harry's bored of models now, the same way he's bored of Ron's constant nagging, bored of his Weasley monogram knitwear, bored of the same fucking grin that greets him when he hands his fire-truck red Bugatti over to the valet every night. He wants to find—well, he isn't sure what he wants. Anything but models.
Terrible People by wolfpants (E, 53k)
What happens when Harry and Draco end up on the same Muggle gay cruise? They certainly didn't plan for it to happen (but their friends might have). They're stuck with each other for a week, they might as well make the most of it, right? Featuring a holiday-long game of Truth or Dare, a very ill-judged FWB proposition, decades-long pining, lots of gin, and a small pair of green swimming trunks.
A Secondary Education by Thunderbird587 (E, 234k)
Fleeing the aftermath of his recent divorce, Draco Malfoy takes up a post as the new Potions Master at Hogwarts. At first he believes his hopes for a fresh start are dashed when he sees that a certain boyhood rival is on staff there as well. But Harry Potter is being weirdly nice to him, leaving Draco no choice but to play along.
Draco:
Hourglass Heart by @bixgirl1 (E, 5k)
It only happened once — depending on how Harry counted.
Death Dreams by @writcraft (E, 9.5k)
Draco likes to keep things casual, or at least he did before Harry Potter barged back into his life.
Keep your hands on me by @tenthousandyearsx (E, 21k)
Malfoy binds himself with a sex curse. Harry cannot get enough (but would much prefer to keep Malfoy for himself).
The Things We Need by @Kbrick (E, 25k) - established Drarry, polyamory
Three hundred and fifty-three days out of the year, Harry is in a monogamous, fufilling relationship with Draco Malfoy. Then there are the other twelve days.
I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor by birdsofshore (E, 28k)
Harry felt lit up from inside as soon as he entered the bar. There were blokes dancing together, their bodies close to one another, not keeping a wary distance as Harry was always careful to do when he was near another man. God, he wanted this – wanted it so much he could taste it, a metallic tang of heat and desire. He suspected nothing would ever be the same again – especially when he saw who else was in the room.

Artist and Merch Artist Submission Guidelines:
We’d like to see YOUR style, so if there’s one piece that fits your style/brand/etc, we would like to see it.
There are three different types of art we are looking for: small doodles to be included with stories and for merch, full page illustrations, and comics.
You should try to show off art that fits the styles you are hoping to draw for.
What we are looking at for the different styles:
Small doodles: color, compactness, use of space
Comic: pacing, composition, placement of words, how well an idea or actions are displayed
Full page: color usage, composition, use of space, background
NOTE! If your work is black and white or doesn’t contain color we will be looking at linework and/or shading instead.
Please have one work be Drarry at least, or include works with Harry and Draco, so we can see how you draw them.
Works do not all have to be fandom related. Pick things you are proud of and that will show off what you can bring to the zine!
You do not need to know how to do the formatting for any of this beforehand. The mod team will instruct and guide you on the formatting process.
Cosplayers are allowed! We will be looking at the quality of cosplay and the composition of the photos and posing. The outfits for the submission are not required to be professor related, though the zine submission will need to be.
NSFW submissions for the digital version should not contain any major trigger warnings including non-con, underage, or anything generally considered dead dove. A useful guideline is: keep NSFW content safe, sane, and consensual. If you have any questions about NSFW content or ideas, please reach out to the mods for clarification.
AI art will NOT be allowed.
NSFW guidelines: Please keep explicit works safe, sane, and consensual.
APPLY HERE
Zine Artist FAQ:
How many pieces can I submit?
Please submit at least three. The form will allow you to submit up to 10 since we provide options for links or files, but the minimum is three.
What if I have an idea that isn’t art or fic?
We would love to see it! We are open to all types of creative media. Crochet, knitting, collage, cosplay, sculpture, poetry, the sky is the limit! If the applications don’t fit your needs to submission, please reach out to us so we can accommodate!
Will I be allowed to make changes to my application after I submit it?
Unfortunately, No. If you wish to change anything, you are allowed to submit again, but changing them won’t be allowed due to the fact the mods might see different versions of the app depending on when we see them. Therefore, please submit a new application, and we will be using the most recent version for judging. If you need to see something from an application you already submitted, just contact us, and we can help you out!
Can I sign up with my friend as a writer/artist pair?
You would need to submit separate applications. If you were to both be accepted into the project, you would be allowed to collaborate together.

Erised Beta Call!
Hey peeps! The official Erised beta list this year is a little thin, so I'm putting out a call here as well so others can take advantage of the betas who've already offered their services.
For those who don't know what Erised is, it's an annual Drarry (Harry/Draco) secret santa fest. I've been participating in some fashion for a few years now, and it's that time again!
To ensure the details are kept secret so they're a surprise for the recipient, I can't give too many particulars, but we'll see what we can do all the same.
Looking for: A Drarry fan with few to no triggers (I don't want to detail the content before you've agreed to beta the story, but if you've read my work before, you know what kind of things I usually write about, so draw your conclusions there!) who has a good eye for SPAG errors and is preferably a UK English speaker (as I am not, and while I feel I usually do a pretty good job, there's always gonna be goofs). You need to be a pretty quick reader--I can't discuss the length in public, but I want to be sure you've got plenty of time to dedicate to the beta in case it's longer or shorter than you might be expecting.
The first draft will be completed by the end of September/in another week or so, and I'll be editing and finalizing while my beta looks over this draft. There won't be massive changes made during editing, I expect, so this saves time. Erised submissions are due by the start of November, so it's just a month to finalize everything!
If this sounds like something you'd be up for, please drop me a message!

here’s what’s up👀
Heyoo! So: at the moment I don’t really have art in the works to share, but that’s because I’m working on a couple of other things! Let me briefly tell you about them! :)
1. Drarry Project This is something I started working on in 2019 - some of you might remember participating in a questionnaire about it? So this is it, and it’s finally coming to fruition!! [EDIT 2024: haha I lied :’) #burnout] This will be a Drarry zine with exclusive art and ficlets (written in collaboration with my talented bestie @shewhomustnotbenamed), as well as a coloring/puzzle book and a pin and prints and stickers and more - all Drarry!😇 I am hoping to open the shop for pre-orders within the next few months (or later..) - I will definitely keep you updated about it! :)
2. Pansmione Fanfiction I’m finishing up writing and drawing for a Pansmione fic of ~30-40k words :) It’s somewhat niche maybe - they’re both Aurors on a mission and have to survive in the woods without wands hahah It’s smutty and explicit and not for everyone I guess, but maybe some of you will be interested - I’ll let you know when it’s being posted!😏 I really hope I get it done this year!
So there’s that! Naturally, if I do end up drawing more fanart (these projects aside), I’ll post it! Just wanted to give you a heads-up in case you don’t hear from me for a lil bit :) Thanks for sticking around!!🥰
#i'm so insanely excited tbh!!😭 i hope some of you will feel the same way!!#I love you all!!!!#more information to come in the future!#announcement

Hello hello and happy Friday!
I am so excited to welcome my friend @fictional to the library! She's not only one of my favorite authors and artists, but one of my favorite people. You might also know her by her ao3 username, milkandhoney. She's brought us an amazing rec and I'm so excited to share it!
Like a recent anon (who was given excellent recs!) I’ve also been on a Pride & Prejudice kick. How could I not? It’s the original enemies to lovers -- a masterclass in prickly barbs and pining glances. And while I expected as much, the story I’m reccing, How to Overcome Pride and Prejudice in Eight Weeks by gglow has that and so much more. It takes the central conceit and places the reader outside of it, where Austen’s story pulls double duty as 1. a modern day set piece in the form of an undercover book club, and 2. an analogy used by the main characters to talk through the underlying romantic conflict.
Okay okay, that might sound a bit confusing. What you really need to know is that Harry and Draco are Auror partners on an undercover mission, trailing a suspect by any means necessary. Those means just happen to be disguising themselves as people who enjoy discussing why Mr. Darcy has zero social skills. But don’t think our favorite wizards are just sitting around with their ankles crossed -- there’s plenty of spicy moments and action, and scenes that combine the two (gentle spoiler: Harry is a himbo/gym rat with delicious abs who makes use of the showers. You’re welcome.)
How to Overcome Pride and Prejudice in Eight Weeks is basically a list of my favorite things: detective work, polyjuice, magical cats, jealousy, ensemble casts, a forest worth of pining and desperate shagging. The prose is clever, snappy, and immediately pulls you in. I adore stories that bring you into a character’s world. That tells you who they are, without holding your hand. Harry and Draco both feel like complete people with lives beyond each other and their work, but in the same vein, you can see how much the outside factors amplify who they are, and why Draco and Harry work so well when they’re together.
If that all weren’t enough, more icing on the cake: gglow is new to me! I literally found them this month while scrolling the Drarry tag! And they have more stories in their archive, which means if you enjoy this one, there’s even more Drarry to consume! How cool is that??
I’d love to geek out over their work with friends, so please feel free to slide into my DMs to discuss! Thanks again to DrarryLibrarian, for the opportunity to share this gem with you all <3
How to Overcome Pride and Prejudice in Eight Weeks by gglow (69,660 words, rated T)
After four years of working together as rookie Aurors, a major case falls onto the desk of Harry and Draco’s cubicle. When they end up in a Pride and Prejudice book club on the tail of their suspect, both men get more than they bargained for: The legendary Jane Austen’s depiction of character draws out an awkward secret Draco’s been nursing for the past four years, and forces Harry to face the realities of his failing relationship with someone else.
Will they manage to navigate their first-ever high-stakes case while preserving their gentlemanlike manner? And most important of all… will they be able to overcome their pride and prejudice in eight short weeks and learn from one of the greatest Muggle authors that ever lived?

31. Would you come back to me?
Prompt used- doing a pinky promise. This post have been inspired by one of @drarry-is-my-therapy recent reblog and one of @fqirycircle drawing, which is absolutely amazing. TW- ANGST | HURT/COMFORT | Harry's heart had always belonged to the boy by the lake.
" dad" Albus said as he watched his father cleaning off the used utensils
" yea " harry replied looking over his shoulder to his son sitting behind the kitchen table.
" I- I was talking with mom the other day and she told me something " Albus nervously said
" oh yeah, what'd she tell ?" Harry chuckled
" why you guy's really separated " Albus replied. Harry stopped dead for a moment looking blankly at the utensils until he resumed washing, not replying anything yet.
Once done, harry wiped off his hands over his apron, handing Albus the cold coffee he had just brewed, taking one for himself, he sat down in front of Albus with a curious smile.
" so what'd she tell you ?"
" well- she doesn't want me talking to you about these things but I- think I'm big enough to know these things now, don't you think ?" He nervously asked once again.
" well- albus I think you are " harry gave albus a friendly frown and with that Albus immediately loosened up, giving harry a genuine smile.
" so what did she tell you ?" He asked once again pointing Albus to drink his cold coffee.
" well- she told me- that you guys didn't love each other " Albus said
" I do love your mom Albus-"
" just not the same way, right ?" Albus asked. Biting the inside of his cheek harry deliberated whether he should actually let Albus know or not, until he did, knowing if he were where Albus was, he'd want to know too.
Harry nodded hesitantly.
" but you guys seemed to love each other so much? Like all the things you did, I mean i don't get it how could you just fall out of love you know ?" Albus asked a little irritated by the fact that his parents had actually fallen out of love. Harry is suddenly strongly reminded of a very Vivid situation, the situation he'd been so familiar with.
" Albus- I think what you're trying to say is that we Always cared for each other. We often confuse love with care. At much later part of our marriage, before separation we had almost forgotten what was it like to love each other and simply cared for one another" harry explained.
Albus clenched looking at his father, " so you're saying one day we eventually fall out of love ?"
" what- no- Albus, no that's not what happened- hell " harry immediately responded.
" then what happened ?" Albus aggressively asked
" it's- it's just more complicated than it seems Albus but I want you to know that love is real, alright. Just because your parents didn't work out doesn't mean love cannot exists, look at your uncle Ron and aunt Hermione, I've rarely ever seen love like that and hell I can't even tell you how much time they had spent crushing desperately over each other for years. We're sorry- really for setting such a bad example but we're not perfect, nobody is. It's simply is we couldn't make it work and we regret it " harry sighed pushing his hair back from falling over his face.
Albus shoulder slumped down a bits, staring at the water ring on his coaster absent mindedly.
" just say it albus. Don't keep it in " harry encouraged knowing his son was deliberating about saying something.
Albus looked up at harry strangely, a look he had never looked at him with ever before, " she said- that you- you've never truly loved her. She said even though you loved her but a part of your heart Always belonged to someone else "
And everything stopped. Harry's breath caught in his throat, his hand stilled in the air, even his hair on his forehead became still. He was shook Ginny had told him something like that. It wasn't as if harry wasn't ever prepared for such conversations but the way it had twisted into something, it was unpredictable and he found it hard to focus on one thing.
" is it true dad ? That you loved someone else too ?" Albus contemplated nervously.
Harry looked up at albus, not realising when had he ever leant down and cleared his throat to gain his voice back.
" I never cheated alb-"
" I know. She knows that but she says she knew that you Always have loved Someone else too " Albus bit his lip nervously hoping he hadn't offended harry by saying something so personal.
" i- I never thought she'd actually tell you this" harry eyes widened in surprise as he cleared his throat once again.
" w- I shouldn't have bought this up- this is just-"
" hey hey, it's fine- you said you're big enough to know these things now- well then " harry interjected nervously " she's right. I- my heart as she put it, one part of it has always belonged to someone else " harry sighed closing his eyes, glimpsing back in his memories of that one Particular person.
" oh- who ?" He asked curiously
Harry raised his eyebrows, chuckling nervously, not believing it even for a second that he is infact about have this conversation.
" someone" he finally replied.
And with that harry is brought back into his memories from years ago, that one person's laughter resonating in his head, that one smile which was only reserved for him, that voice which echoed in his head every night, as if it was calling harry to it but just as he reached the bottom, there would be another bottom and he would be stuck. Everyday. And as harry started to finally tell Albus about his first love, he flows into his memory of the last day of 5th year after harry had recently lost Sirius and was extremely vulnerable, around the black lake away from everyone, in just his own little bubble with him.
The lake reflected with the red and yellow light of the dropping sun from across the mountain and a faint breeze drying Harry's face covered with tears. He has someone's arms around his shoulder, cooing him, reminding him one day everything would finally be fine but he didn't had it in him to even understand what he was saying. He was crying, heavily breathing because of the heart clenching pain, the void in his heart which had finally filled had now grown bigger, how was anything ever supposed to be fine..
" we need to end this " harry abruptly said
" what ?" He asked confused by Harry's sudden outrage with something complete nuisance.
" we can't- I can't keep doing this " harry replied numbly
" wha- why not ?" He asked furrowing his eyebrows, feeling slightly hurt by such abysmal suggestion.
" don't you see, I lose everyone one day and I- I can't- I don't want to deliberately lose you " harry replied looking at him.
He frowned " you're not losing me harry-"
" then will I not ?" They had never talked about future, only because it remained so uncertain that they hated the idea of future
" no- you will not " he replied
" and you are absolutely 100 percent sure ? Isn't there a possibility someone would find out about us and it'll spread like a wildfire and everyone would desperately try to separate us !" Harry exclaimed
" okay harry- first calm down. Nobody have found out about us in the last one year, it seems highly unlikely someone would-"
" voldemort knows " and suddenly both of their breaths came to a halt. One word and everything they owned collapsed onto the ground as if it was the fragile chandelier hanging on the top of a broken roof.
" how-"
" he can see in my head. We can't keep doing this-"
" then we fight-"
" I'll fight- can you ?"
And there was silence. He wanted to respond that he would but he didn't trust the world, even if he trusted himself. He hated the world. He was weak, fragile and in a fight against the world, he knew he'd always lose, over and over.
" we are on opposite sides of war. Voldemort's came out. He'll be rebuilding his army. Everything is going to change. Even us" harry tried to explain without wanting to break down. This was the first time harry after sirius had sensibly talked but it was self preservation speaking for him, he couldn't afford to lose someone he really loves, once again. For once he wanted to protect his heart, he couldn't roll it over his sleeves when his sleeves were covered with thorns. It would be a death call and he couldn't give in, just yet.
" you and I- people like us don't belong together. The world will never understand us and this is the first fight we'd lose. I want this but it's going to be difficult. We can't be together as Long as we are on opposite sides-"
"Then I'll be on your side- "
" you are " harry responded giving a weak smile
" but I belong on the other side" he replied looking far ahead over the lake as if the realisation had finally dawned upon him. Something he had always known but had now slapped him right in the face.
"yes " harry replied looking at him, Saving in his memories the last time what he really looked like, his smile, his long lashes, his crooked nose, his pale skin, his tinted cheeks, his soft ears, his soft hair, his storm filled eyes, his pink plumped lips he had kissed so often. Saving it away for one day what it would look like in a pensieve.
" we knew what we were getting into but we took the risk nevertheless. It was a deranged path and we knew it from the beginning " harry softly said clutching other man's fingers with his own.
He didn't reply, he just longingly stared at the waters, as if he was remembering them not harry.
" so we give up ?" He finally asked turning to harry with unseen part of his face wet with tears. Harry reached forward wiping away his tear but they didn't stop, they only flooded more with Harry's touch.
" no, we- we promise to come back once again after all this is over" harry smiled softly.
" and you believe there will be coming back after all ? What if one of us- dies " he hesitated In fear of only imagining it.
Harry started at him knowing it was one of the possibilities but wasn't ready for such thing. It was a huge possibility that one day harry might lose " I have hope for us " harry suddenly spoke out loud. The thoughts In his mind had unknowningly reached his lips and there wasn't a going back from that.
The other man stared at harry long enough, he too concealing this part of him for that one day they'd meet again.
" promise me then if we make it through, we'll come back to each other " he asked, his voice sounding not more than a quivering sound.
" I promise that If I make it through one day, we'll meet again and come back to each other" harry replied
" pinky promise ?" He smiled.
Harry chuckled, then nodded
" do you promise ?"
" I promise "
" what happened then ? How'd you wind up with mom ?" Albus asked curiously, a faint yellow light from the evening bouncing over his brunette head.
" did he- die ?" Albus asked almost heart broken
" what- no " harry chuckled
" then what happened ?" Albus asked again
" he- broke the promise. We belonged to someone else much before we could've even belonged to each other. When I met him after the war and his probation, he had changed completely " harry replied reminiscing about the specific day
" then didn't you ever ask him again ?" Albus asked almost jumping off his chair.
Harry gave a small smile " I couldn't "
" but why- what if he had still loved you ?" Albus asked
" as I said he was completely changed. He wasn't the man I fell in love with. He never asked either. It died out over time. Besides I'm pretty sure he had already forgotten about it. Also I think he was engaged by the time we met again, it didn't make sense" harry replied
" then didn't you ever like try to stop his wedding like In those romantic comedies mum watches ?" Albus asked excitedly
Harry laughed picking up their glasses and going over to the sink " she's always loved them. You've got to stop watching them if that's what you're cooking in your head Albus. Real love Is different than what they show, it's not just one fight and making it up. Its so much efforts, fights, pain, drama and so many other things"
" but If it's the right person, it'd never feel like that would it ? If you really love someone then those fights wouldn't be so bad or there wouldn't be pain or drama. It'd be a happy relationship, wouldn't it ?" And in that small sentence albus has unknowningly managed to define true love.
Harry looked at his now grown up son, crossing his arms smiling impressively. And nodded.
Albus sighed in relief, slumping down in his chair. Harry quizzically analysed Albus until his expressions changed to sometimes brief.
" who is it?" Harry asked knowingly
" what?" Albus blushed
" who's this person you're suddenly relating everything to ?" Harry teased poking Albus Playfully.
" there is no one dad" Albus blushed embarassed, jumping off the chair, taking a few steps back.
" come on- I told you my story. I atleast deserve to know who it is " harry smirked crossing his arms in front of him
Albus sighed rolling his eyes" he's from school"
" ooh, someone from school. Like father like son" harry teased
" dadd " Albus whined blushing
" okay- fine, fine. Who is it then ?" Harry asked giving up with the teasing.
" it doesn't matter, he doesn't like me " Albus sighed crossing his arms in front of him in disappointment.
Harry carefully analysed Albus's face again, remembering exactly the same way he felt "it's the Malfoy kid, isn't it ?"
Albus's eyes suddenly shot up in surprise.
" how did you-"
" you're my son. Of course I'd know" harry sighed uncrossing his arms and stepping forward and placing them in the kitchen table, leaning forward.
" don't make the same mistakes I did. Ask him out. Write to him maybe. I'm sure he'd agree " harry suggested.
" mistake ? What mistake did you make ?" Albus asked curiously.
Harry gave him a firm smile before he putting his hands away from the table to his sides " it's a story for some other day, your mom is gonna be here to pick you up in an hour. Do your stuff and we'll talk about it next week? What say ?"
Albus frowned before letting go and nodding.
" one last question dad "
" shoot" harry said as he started washing those used cups again
" did you ever love mom as much as you loved that someone ?"
Harry smiled this time not stopping " I- love like that happened only once. I loved your mom a different way. I loved him a different way "
" but who'd you love more then?"
Harry turned around to see Albus standing there leaning over the kitchen table curiously " I will not answer that. Now enough with my love life. Go do your homework " harry said a little sternly in his father like adamant voice.
Sighing Albus gave up.
" okay, just one question, I promise " Albus plead again. Harry sighed before nodding.
" if now he came back in your life and asks you for a second chance, would you go back to him ?"
Harry smiled Shaking his head" yes- yes I would "
The next week when Albus came back for the stay, he seemed far excited than anything else. As soon as Ginny had left, Albus squealed.
" whoa there squirrel, what's got your knickers in a twist ?" Harry chuckled
" I've got an invitation. Can we please go to scropius's place. He offered for a while. I'll promise we can come back and do homework, he really wants me to see his collections. Can we please dad, please ?" Albus gave harry his puppy eyes in desperation..
Harry sighed before nodding.
" for an hour.. "
And with that after an hour, they flooed to scropius's place. The Malfoy manor.
They were recieved with a rather very pleasant place. It was no longer a dark, submerged place, it had been refurbished with mostly white and brown. It seemed like an entirely new place. Not one part of Malfoy manor looked like what it did ages ago ,and yet harry liked it better. It was welcoming. And just then he walked in, with scropius.
" potter "
" Malfoy" harry sternly nodded at Draco, losing himself again in that brief reminiscents of the past. He hadn't changed even a little bit as he remembered him from the day by the lake, yet everything had changed. Everything.
" we're gonna go " Albus didn't even wait and ran off with scropius, leaving harry and draco alone, both staring at each other thinking how the other had forgotten of the promise..
( I've really been writing shit lately. Anyways hope you liked this one, I'd been very excited for this one but It haven't turned out as good as I wanted to, so .. )

FIC REC: Cruel River
Author: @tinyhistory / aka Eleventy7 (unrevealed, part of @hd-cluefest) Rating: T Length: 67k Warnings: Graphic Descriptions of Violence Additional warnings: Child Death (off-screen), Minor Character Deaths, Attempted Murder, Drowning, Strangulation, Hanging, Violence, Blood and Injury, Graphic Description of Corpses, Implied/Referenced Suicide, Gaslighting, Psychological Horror, Haunting, Ghosts, Memory Loss, Implied/Referenced Homophobia, War (off-screen)
Many thanks to @sitp-recs and @onbeinganangel for advice & feedback in writing this rec and to @fw00shy for letting me shout about this fic as I was reading it!
Summary: Draco inherits a castle deep in the Scottish highlands, and discovers it’s haunted by more than just ghosts.
I was sold from the first mention that this fic draws from elements of the Haunting series (Haunting of Hill House/Haunting of Bly Manor) and found myself head over heels in love with it from the first chapter. These are just a few of the reasons why I loved it so dearly:
Complex, detailed, and compelling worldbuilding: Set in a non-magical world, we meet Draco soon after Lucius’ death and he is a beautiful Draco, all aristocratic poise and sharp wit. Though there is no Wizarding War looming in his past, there is a certain darkness that surrounds him, especially in his relationship with his father, who haunts this fic in more ways than one.
“Mr Malfoy,” Draco says. “My father is dead. Now I’m Mr Malfoy. You never called my father by his first name, did you?”
Found family and re-finding family: Even without Hogwarts, there is that special and timeless bond between Draco & Harry that feels age-old and tinged with something slightly dark. But Harry isn’t the only one Draco finds in the distant Scottish castle, there is also Ron and Hermione, Molly Weasley, and a brief appearance of Ginny and Luna (Linny!!! Property inspectors!!!) who each serve to make the world feel full.
“Luna specialises in wildlife conservation,” Ginny adds. “Or, as I like to tell people — she’s fauna, I’m flora. Well, shall we have a look?”
A slow and romantic build for Drarry: Handyman Harry is gentle and thoughtful, compelled to the castle despite his better instincts. They have an immediate affinity, an undeniable mutual understanding. The author builds on this initial spark, drawing out their friendship and care for each other (bed sharing! chess playing! an absolutely terrifying case of mistaken identity!). Their new story mixes with a young Draco and Harry and a story even older than the both of them.
“Well...” Harry hesitates. “I hadn’t fallen asleep accidentally. I stayed on purpose. I just… had a feeling. That I might be needed. I’ve the same feeling tonight.”
This fic is richly written, poignant and atmospheric. The author has created such a compelling story, full of rich and unusual characterizations, a world that feels novel-like in its depth and breadth, and gorgeous prose that sings with tension and drama and care. Pick it up only when you have the hours to read the fic all the way through because you certainly won’t want to put it down.
"Is treise dithis a dol thar an atha, na fad’o’ chèile.”
Read it here on Ao3 & reblog the fest post!
