(Tagging my fave fandoms just so people know about the change)

I love AO3 and the volunteers who run it, but this change is way too draconian and poses a risk to fan engagement that is already on life-support these days. It's inconvenient for authors who reply to all comments on a chapter at once to notify readers about a new one or who like conversing with readers in comments. It also seems like it'll just drive spammers to guest accounts.

However, if this is the direction they're choosing to go in, a few suggestions:

Carve out an exception for authors replying to comments on their own works and accounts with fics associated with them.

Provide more information about why a comment is being blocked in the pop up so it doesn't put off readers or make it look like they're blocked.

Instead of allowing AI to be used to produce content, use it to identify potential spam comments and flag these comments so the author can block them.

I understand the idea of introducing friction to reduce spam, but the spam messages I've seen on AO3 are quite easy to spot and block. If people are falling for them, that feels like an education piece. Education will also help people recognise whatever strategy spammers use to get around these changes. More verification at sign up (e.g. captcha etc) could also solve this in the back end.

sirius never says i love you back. james says it all the time, morning and night, between kisses and study breaks and detentions. he says it as often as he feels it - almost constantly - and sirius never says it back. he laughs or smiles or, at most, says you too but he'll always shy away from even just the word love. it breaks james' heart just a little every time. but sirius did say i love you once, just once: on halloween 1981, with harry's cries in the background and a limp wrist in his hand.

quick uni lesbian prongsfoot ideas since everyone is making little teasing posts about them --

James is captain of the women's rugby team (obviously), fly-half, long back hair in a high ponytail, bright nail polish, will side step the hell out of you on the field and set up incredible plays.

they're engineering majors together. annoyingly smarter than everyone else.

sirius is teaching herself how to tattoo. inherited some money (it was a lot of money) from her uncle and bought herself a motorcycle. (james bought her a helmet which she only wears for james.) cut her hair shorter for the first time by herself and it looked like a total mess but somehow she was able to pull it off. not totally estranged from her family (yet) but don't ask about them. seriously.

she likes james, inventing cool shit, and drinking, and sometimes the order varies.

people assume sirius is meaner than she is, and they assume james is much nicer than she actually is. (only one of them has actually broken someone's nose.)

they both act like they're indestructible - james because she kind of believes she's immortal and sirius because she kind of wants to die (but she'll just let james believe otherwise). james worries about sirius's drinking; sirius worries about james being the target of illegal hits on the field (because she's just that good it's worth it to risk a yellow to get her out), but they mostly mutually agree to pretend they're never worried.

politically radical but a little annoying and champagne socialist about it given that they both come from money and don't *quite* understand what that means in reality.

once it becomes clear that they're poly every dyke on campus (and some straight girls too) go a bit crazy.
