i have many prongsfoot tropes that i love but one of my favorite ones definitely has to be "james going on a date with lily only to end up talking about sirius for the entire duration of the date instead".

When 11 year old Regulus first saw James, he felt something weird. The kid was smiling. Regulus had never seen anyone other than his brother, Sirius, smile and it felt weird. Then he extended his hand to shake James', per what he had been taught or seen his parents do. The occasional indirect cheek kiss was there too, but that was just for someone you know. But James didn't shake back. Instead he extended both arms and lunged forward to hug Regulus. Regulus, confused, froze. It took him awhile to realize what was happening. James Potter was hugging him. He never had been hugged by anyone but his brother, so the sensation felt—weird. It felt distinct and yet it felt like he was home. He just stood there, unsure what to do. James finally pulled away, smiling brightly. He put a hand in his pocket and took out a candy, handing it to him before leaving. Regulus was confused, dumbfounded and lost. He reluctantly opened the candy wrapper, licking it a bit. It tasted sweet, causing him to smile as his heart thumped. No one had given him anything before, not like that. Sirius was too young to have bought him anything. Regulus ate the candy, folding the wrapper neatly and keeping it in his pocket. And for the first time ever, he felt something bloom in him. he had never felt this sensation before, it was different from what he felt for his brother. He had sort of hated James Potter at first, but now Regulus realised something.

He realised could never hate James Potter.

Cannot shake my HC that James would rock up to Grimmauld Place in a wave of righteous indignation, ready to duel Orion and Walburga for what they did to Sirius growing up.

The only reason he survives is Regulus answers the door, rolls his eyes and slams the door in his face. Neither of them mention it to Sirius.

The way I love you

They lay on the soft grass in Hyde Park, watching the last glimmers of sunlight fade away, hues of orange turning into burning red before the dark blue of the night enveloped everything. James's head was resting on Sirius's chest, the steady rise and fall of it concealing the irregular thump, thump, thump within. 

"I'm sorry." James's voice was hoarse from crying. Sirius had never witnessed him break down like that. The three words his best friend had uttered through his sobs had burned a hole through all of Sirius's barriers straight to his frail heart. 

"Why did you tell me that now? James, you just – you just got married. We agreed that it was over between us. You promised me…" Sirius trailed off, swallowing heavily. "You promised we'd be okay. We almost were." 

"I know. I fucked up. I didn't mean to say anything." James nuzzled his face against Sirius's faded band T-shirt, and Sirius stroked his hair, never wanting the comfortable weight of James to leave him.  

Sirius took a shaky breath. "Do you want to take it back then?"  

Do you want to go back to pretending you don't love me the wrong way? 

"No." 

Sirius remained silent. What could he say to that? They both knew how it was. Like the light faded and always returned again, the unshakeable truth remained.  

"I don't want to love you like that either."  

"I know." 

The warm summer air caressed their skin, and just for that fleeting moment, there was nothing but the two of them, alone in the universe.  

Just for a second, they were them again.

thoughts on toxic james x sirius

i have lots of thoughts on toxic prongsfoot

but outside of cheaters prongsfoot in a scenario where they just normally get together they are stillllll the most toxically codependent people you have ever seen. in any configuration, romantic or platonic or otherwise, they are disgustingly, toxically codependent. they have no concern for anyone but each other. they will throw their morals completely out the window for each other. sirius will flagellate himself to keep james happy, and james would put a bullet in just about anyone's skull to keep sirius protected.

i looooove how romantic prongsfoot plays out in the moral corruption of james. like sirius is already a bit off his rocker in general but james becomes so much not like himself in the name of his and sirius' connection. james is the sunshine golden boy around everyone else, but with sirius, he is whatever sirius wants him to be. sirius needs help cheating on an exam? james is stealing the study guide. sirius is bored on a weekend? james is coming up with increasingly outlandish pranks to keep him entertained. sirius gets knocked off his broom in a quidditch match? james is going to have 'a word' with the player.

sirius' toxicity with james comes about in his complete disregard for anyone who is not james potter. he is not interested in being around people who are not james potter. he will throw a tantrum if you dare be someone who is not james potter. he will roll his eyes at every word you say, hurl insults, even flat-out ignore you until james walks back into the room. when james isn't around, sirius is climbing up the walls waiting for him to get back. he would get insanely jealous over anyone who dare even look at james, and he's suspicious of every single person james speaks to (because who wouldn't want james potter?)

Sirius was the one who started hanging out with the Slytherins after the prank because even if the rest of the griffyndor friend group didn’t know all the details of what happened, they knew that sirius was ‘the enemy’ and he was basically exiled.

Remus would write letters to sirius in his diary every night about how he missed him but couldn’t believe he did what he did

James took it the hardest. No context needed.

Remus smoked the pain away, Sirius drank the pain away

Marlene was the only griffyndor to talk to Sirius after ‘the incident’

Sirius had even worse insomnia after

Remus slept all the time to escape reality

They made up after 3 months (cue the makeup sex)

They weren’t dating before the prank but they practically were

Sirius got jealous whenever he was with rosekiller, not because of them, but because it reminded him of his relationship with remus

Sirius didn’t eat, Remus cut himself

Peter and Remus got a lot closer post prank bc he was the only one who could make him laugh and james reminded him of sirius

After wolfstar made up, sirius still talked to the skittles, and it helped sirius and regulus’ relationship grow stronger

Lily hated sirius for like a year after

James saw reminders of sirius everywhere he went so he stopped going places

James was the last to forgive sirius

other than marly, peter was the first

after everyone made up, it was still a little awkward, but sirius didn’t wanna go back to slytherin so he just spent all his time with marlene and mary until the marauders confronted him about it

some of these i came up with, some are from fics, some are just widely known, i just brain dumped them

james tells sirius he loves him all the time - at breakfast, and lunch, and dinner, morning, day, and night, in class, after class, he tells him when they're alone and when they're with friends and family, he says it, writes it, draws it, sings it, he tells him drunk and sober and happy and sad, and sirius never really says it back. james is okay with it, really - sirius doesn't exactly have the clearest perception of love - and he feels love when sirius saves him seats and writes him notes and laughs into his mouth between kisses, and he's okay, he's okay, but what he doesn't know is that when it's quiet at night and they're in bed together and james is dead asleep, sirius traces james' brows and nose and lips, touches acne scars and presses his lips against james' forehead and whispers i love you i love you i love you until it doesn't hurt anymore

potential wolfstar hot take (i’m not sure if it is but i’ve never seen anyone talk about it)?

i think remus would have been very jealous of james and sirius’ bond, especially pre-relationship and in the early stages. it’s impossible for him to not have felt insecure and in second place.

until one day, he breaks down and confesses this to sirius. and sirius (who had already dealt with something similar with regulus) tells him gently that he has a lot of love to give and his love for james and remus was different. it could not be compared because it meant everything to him but not in the same way. he does not love james more than remus or vice versa. it’s just love, and it’s more love than he was ever allowed, and it’s for them before it’s for anyone else.
