How resilient are the ROs in a fight? Like who can take a beating and get up and keep fighting?
Pretty much all of the Shepherds who regularly face combat can take an ass-kicking and can get back up: that's pretty much a prerequisite of the job, if you're a Lunar Corps agent! If you're asking me to rate it on a scale, it'd probably be:
Blade - Briony (tied for most physically durable with most amount of stamina) - also tied with Halek (blood-rage mode: will literally keep fighting until something knocks him out or kills him, but that's not really in his control... also in his berserker state, he doesn't feel pain or tiredness, so... yeah. Some Hunters have had their hearts stop because the blood-rage removes their "limiters" and pushes their bodies too far)
Trouble - Ayla (spiritual resilience rivals that of Blade or Briony, even if physical endurance is slightly less: they'll DIE fighting on their feet or not at all)
Chase - maniac who doesn't really feel fear and exhibits extreme physical resilience and a surprising amount of stubbornness (but also often displays enough good sense to retreat if something looks hopeless). I guess if you're asking how long he can withstand torture or a beating, he's probably at the top of the list, but if you're asking how long will he keep picking himself up *to continue fighting*, he knows when to beat a tactical retreat when it's looking hopeless rather than sticking around to get whaled on. The first five don't have that trait
Lavinet - tough-ass lady who will keep going, bloodied and haggard, no matter what, but her overall "limit" is still beneath Chase's before her body quits on her
Tallys - high physical endurance and resistance to pain, but prefers a more cautious approach and would prefer to lay down arms and figure out a way to escape rather than continually just throwing everything she has into a fight if they're kicking the absolute shit out of her
Red - he can take an ass-kicking, but asking him to endlessly keep swinging through it is kind of tough lol
Shery - Riel (Shery: the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. I actually used to think Shery was cowardly, but I'm coming to find out that she's mentally and emotionally tougher than I gave her credit for, and I think she'd be able to withstand getting beat up without breaking or surrendering if it was really important! This could also come from being bullied as a child. But she certainly wouldn't be able to pick herself up and keep on fighting, she'd just 'endure' silently before passing out or fainting from the pain! Riel: he has a high enough pain tolerance and mental resilience to laugh in the face of people kicking the shit out of him or torturing him physically--his pride wouldn't allow him to react much--but physical frailty and inexperience to people putting hands on him would mean it wouldn't take very much to fuck him up lol, that guy's never been in a fight before, even the idea of him putting his fists up makes me laugh-cry-scream, it feels very wrong)

It's done! The outline for—
—is below the cut. The goal of this project is to explore the following phenomena with as much context and nuance as I can manage, tracing our history over the past 15 years:
What about us, and what about Dan and Phil, drew in and continues to draw in a very specific audience. If they are a ranch metaphor, we are a pizza metaphor 🥗🍕🫶🏻
Why we were Like That™, by which I mean so parasocially invested in them that we became, at times, the most annoying people on the internet. Much of that reputation is undeserved, and the videos on the phandom to date have been strongly negative. So, uh, I guess I'm going to put my face on camera and (mostly) defend us.
Reblog, share in your Discord servers, reply, or send me messages/anon asks with feedback or resources if you have any! Especially if your experience being in this fandom community has been dramatically different from mine. There are TIT spoilers near the end of the outline, but I'm not tagging because certain individuals seem to be lurking over there. Thank you!
Chapters:
Full outline:
introduction
cold open
felt personally attacked by jonathan haidt's last press tour
showed up to the phrenaissance 11 months late
had an unexpectedly strong response to their new content, needed to find out why
what the hell are we doing here?
- phenomenology (academics are professionally insufferable) - research question 1: what drew the audience in? - research question 2: why were we Like That™?
what we're NOT doing here
- a strict content analysis or "wow we sucked" video - providing sources for things best left uncirculated, thank you
reflexivity (personal biases)
- american zillennial in public health - in the youtube audience by spring 2010 - lurking in the phandom on tumblr 2013-2015, back* since 2019 - fan behavior i did and did not engage in
(----): truly necessary background information, i swear
(pop) cultural trends, tech, and their intersection
- nerd/geek identity and the first online weirdos - broadcast tv & the music industry vs the internet - defining "emo" - blogging & vlogging - early internet comedy
broader social/economic trends
- so the U.S. economy collapsed in 2007 - a decade that sucked except for rom-coms and square enix games - the flip/slide phone + digital camera + mp3 player loadout
(05-8): early youtube and early phil
youtube: a great video uploader without a clear purpose
the content on the website
- crossposts, corporations, and creative/social outlets - omg guys it's amazing phil - contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: justin bieber

contemporary social media sites and forums
(2009): origin story
a wild dan appears… in the comments
the global constant that is teenagers being messy online
daring my old school district to sue me
- "one town's war on gay teens" (literal rolling stone headline!) - epidemiology 101: rates of… ugh… "unaliving" oneself - ways kids cope when it seems no adults will help them
the earliest days of dan & phil
- hello internet + pinof - a chronically overexamined timeline - file deleted ---* so how big WAS the audience at the time? ---* acceptable funny/edgy language was just different
contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: lucas cruikshank
omg it's meeeeeee
- how amy & friends were using youtube - ways i was just destined to end up here - being in social environments with peers 3-6 years older
(2010): is it "twenty-ten" or "two thousand ten?"
youtube is a platform about to explode in popularity
- the algorithm before it was The Algorithm™, lost site features - let's take a trip through the wayback machine :3c - actual dan & phil content in 2010 - the green brothers found vidcon - contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: darren criss
social media: also about to explode in popularity
- facebook was cool at the time, believe it or not - law of equivalent exchange: 2010 amy cringe compilation - the birth of instagram and pinterest - youtube slash livejournal (the first phanfics… sort of) - shockfic and its place in the overton window
the beginning of "the great rewiring" as haidt calls it
- ways social media is about to dramatically change - third spaces become online spaces - confounding variable: changing expectations of teens
(2011): the end of an era, the start of an age

cultural exchange
counterculture and teenagers as concepts
the first british invasion: the 1960s

what is tumblr and why is my child using it
- how the site is meant to work - fandom, memes, aesthetics, and SOME public figures - want to be anxious and depressed in peace? come to tumblr - this site seems a little……… gay ---* tumblr's very queer, very neurodiverse userbase ---* legacy media representation in 2012: bad! ---* actual academic research on tumblr users (yes, it exists) - the tumblr experience for non-native english speakers
amy becomes a vibrating mass of panic and paranoia

Welcome New Followers Post xiv
gonna make this bullet points of Things to Know because deadlines, but hi! welcome!
-this is not a jewish identity or a jumblr blog. i am a jewish person and a holocaust historian, so my content often overlaps with those realms of tumblr
-this is first and foremost a public history blog. public history and public historians do history for the public. we're passionate about transmitting complex historical topics from the academe to the people, and we're in constant (one-sided lmao) conversation with entities such as: film writers and producers, textbook writers, government bodies, journalists, etc regarding the construction of public memory, and the responsibilities that entails
-you don't have to ask if something is ok to reblog. I appreciate the thought, but unless I turn off reblogs or specifically ask people not to engage in certain ways, you're fine, that said:
-I do see and read all tags, replies, and rbs. I consider them public, and I often respond to them as new posts. If you want to engage with me and don't want others to see, then send me an ask which includes the words "please respond privately"
-You can should disagree with me and tell me when you think I'm wrong! Now, I won't lie, years of existing as a young-appearing hyper feminine (i like skirts and bows and sparkly shoes it is what it is) female, Jewish historian have made me defensive and bitey af, and I often misread neutral tones as "coming for me" tones and respond in kind. I apologize for when/if that happens to you, and I assure that, once I realize you're not coming at me in bad faith, I will feel horribly guilty.
-There is a learning curve here. I don't have any desire to gatekeep my blog (it's the opposite tbh), but I do use high level terms which can have multiple meanings in different contexts. I actively try to avoid using impenetrable academic jargon in this space, but sometimes that jargon is the only appropriate phrasing available. In those cases, I urge you to do some research and poke around and then, if you still don't understand what I mean, DM me.
-I am a white, American woman. I am actively anti-racist, and anti-bigotry in general, but there will be times when I do or say something clueless or privileged. If you see that and you have the energy, please tell me! I want this blog to be a welcome place for all,* and I appreciate call-outs as an opportunity for (un)learning.
-Building on that, this is an anti-bigotry space which I'd like people of all demographics and identities to feel comfortable engaging with.* That said, I don't play nice when some random corner of tumblr rolls up in here and barfs their shit all over my posts.
-I am a cringe millennial. I started this blog in 2011, when I was 21, had just finished college, before I'd heard back from any graduate schools, and before I had much resembling a career. I am currently 34. It's fine. But a lot of you are in your teens and 20s and are just starting on your careers, so like, please don't negatively compare yourselves to me or get self-deprecating when/if you want to contact me. We all learn and achieve at different paces and that's ok.
-My book, The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto, will be released in Fall 2025. Trust me I will be screaming from the rooftops and you will not miss the announcements lmao.
-If I don't reply to an ask or a DM, it's not because I hate you. There are 800 reasons why I may not reply, and none of them are personal.
and finally
-I am not your Good Leftist Anti-Zionist Jew. I am not here as a rhetorical cudgel for left-wing anti-Semites who seek out Jews with politics similar to mine to then use as a weapon against other Jewish folks. Don't fucking do it.
*That does not mean that everything I post here will make you feel comfortable. History isn't supposed to make you feel comfortable. Sometimes, it can and should make you feel actively uncomfortable, because that discomfort/cognitive dissonance means you're learning (keep your cognitive dissonance temper tantrums tf away from me, tho). It does mean that I, as an individual, want you all to feel that this is a space where you are welcome to learn and ask questions.
i tried to use bullet points to keep this short, and i failed miserably. on brand.

The sun was shining too bright for me to be worrying about my deadline so I guess I'll use this rare occasion to make a pinned post.
When I started blorbo posting it was simply because "If even I, who knows next to nothing about British and American TV series, can see that Patrick McGoohan was criminally underrated, then maybe this blog has a reason to exist."
The only thing I ever learned about blorbo posting is from the Columbo fandom. They have fun, and they love their blorbo. As the kids say: Love and peace on planet earth.
But McGoohan is a challenge and will never stop being one. His public image, both in front and behind of the camera, isn't that of someone who would be pleased with blorbo posting. I don't know how other blorbo bloggers feel, but I just wish I can hold a conversation with my blorbo that doesn't bore him to death or anger him to the point of throwing me out of the room.
Judging someone who talked about his nervous breakdown like it was just a cold isn't something I like to do, especially online. So if I have to talk about McGoohan, I always get quite nervous. I can only say that I regret we didn't get to know him as much as we would like to and I really wish he was still here with us.
I know many of the decisions he made, he made it for future generations. It's my privilege to say that my blorbo's gift to the three-year-old running this blog has been her greatest pride as a blorbo blogger. And her hardest and most honourable task is not to mess it up.
I actually didn't create this blog to please McGoohan (the ladies can testify to that, lol). And I think I make fun of him more than I should. But I hope he knows that life as a blorbo blogger isn't easy when your blorbo is Patrick McGoohan and maybe, just maybe, he wouldn't be too hard on me.
And just in case anyone is wondering what the hell I'm doing on here, here's a short guide to my blog.
my stupid vid My McGoohan fancams are what I personally consider the funniest part of my blog. But they can be somewhat serious too, I think.
my lousy photoshopping This can mean just about anything. McGoohan as The Little Prince. McGoohan in Ingmar Bergman's films. Anything that I made with photoshop. So I have some more tags to categorize it.
mcgoohan at the museum What I love to do the most in photoshop is putting McGoohan into paintings. I don't know why. Maybe because it easily hides my lousy photoshopping skills. Or maybe because my blorbo is as beautiful as a painting.
mcgoohan album covers What can I say? “But you don't really care for music, do you?”
mcgoohan fashion Let's be honest, don't you love a beautiful blorbo?
mcgoohan posters I sometimes try not to misinterpret McGoohan's works, I don't know if I succeed though.
no context mcgoohan Mostly just McGoohan sitting or standing somewhere. But I love it nonetheless.
mcgoohan for kids and mcgoohan anime Well, it's exactly what you would expect it to be.
mcgoohan arthouse One day I'll retire from blorbo posting and go back to watching arthouse films.
mcgoohan stickers They are not as cute as cat or bunny stickers, but they stick all right.
the prisoner redux or anything redux means my lousy photoshopping for that particular series/movie. But when there are so many McGoohans in one post I get tired of tagging and I just give up.
I think that's enough of my lousy photoshopping.
wild mcgoohan in his natural habitat McGoohan as God intended him. Trying to not give away too much information in interviews.
mcgoohan lore McGoohan in someone else's words, including his daughter's. Needless to say, my words should not be trusted. You'll know them when you see them.
my gif McGoohan gifs, mostly for losing tumblr polls. Also for making this blog popular with the ladies on here.
village poetry If there's one thing that McGoohan might like about this blog, this is probably it.
village soundcloud Blorbos and song lyrics go hand in hand - Tumblr proverb.
mcgoogoo and me Just me rambling about my McGoohan dreams and my hard life as a blorbo blogger.
my lousy shitposting It has something to do with McGoohan I'm afraid. But it's fun.
I know this blog has become quite predictable and it's filled with half of my life's story. But if McGoohan was really who I think he was, that would be the least of his problems with my blog.
And finally, my hiatus is a running joke that I'm getting worse at, I hope.

A new hate blog is on the scene: Meet @no-context-endogenics
The DNI is rich when your whole blog is dedicated to witch-hunting and calling out endogenic systems by name. But let's see if this blog is even living up to its own name.
Here's the first post on their blog:
First... literally have no idea what's wrong with this. But second... Let's take a quick look at the pinned of this system they targeted.
Literally a traumagenic system.
IN THE FIRST POST OF THIS BLOG!
To be fair, they did post to the endogenic tags, but a lot of pro-endo traumagenic systems do when users like this make them feel unsafe in traumagenic spaces.
Right... which is why you posted the previous traumagenic system on your no-context-endogenics blog that claims to be about posting endos! 🙄
Also, I can't tell... are you lumping in mixed origin systems with "endos" here? It seems like you are, because the blog has a tendency of posting mixed origin systems too when it claims to be posting endos, as well as ones that just don't state their origins. Because many mixed origin systems do, in fact, have a disorder and are very public about it.
For example...
Mixed origin, polyfragmented DID system.
(Also, runs some of the coolest and most important plural blogs on Tumblr.)
Another post on this blog, which I'm not including here, was from a 14-year-old polyfragmented c-DID system. That system didn't say if they were endogenic or traumagenic, but I think it's safe to assume that they were most likely at least partially traumagenic.
And no, I think systems that harm the community definitely deserve hate. People who are out there calling out systems, fakeclaiming them, implicitly fakeclaiming trauma, bullying, etc.
But systems who are just existing as endogenic... sorry... we aren't your scapegoat.
I generally try to be nice with these. At least relatively.
But I'm going to fail this time.
You. Are. Pathetic.
All of you.
Endogenic systems have NOTHING to do with why systems are fakeclaimed. Do you want to know why systems are fakeclaimed? It's because systems... are weird. We are. We're a step too far from the norm and the average neurotypical singlet can't comprehend multiple existing in the same body together.
That makes us easy targets. And we should be standing together. We should be supporting each other.
But people like you are only interested in tearing us down because you're too cowardly to put the blame for your fakeclaiming on the actual fakeclaimers.
You want to talk about ruining the community, but you fakeclaim other systems. You hurt other systems. Including traumagenic DID systems. Because you're miserable and you have to inflict your misery on others to make yourselves feel better.
Have you ever been to Fakedisordercringe?
Because let me tell you, the people who get fakeclaimed there aren't usually fakeclaimed for being endogenic. Yes, of course they're anti-endo. But many who are targeted are traumagenic DID systems and it has nothing to do with endogenics at all.
Although... I guess that also applies to the @no-context-endogenics too, doesn't it? I mean, out of every post there, I think this might be the only one that's actually purely endogenic. (Not mixed origins, unknown or explicitly traumagenic.) Most of the blog is just Fakedisordercringe-style posts targeted at trauamagenic DID systems.
Minor bodied? Minor bodied with over 200 headmates? Using the word "headmates?" OSDD-1b? Fictive heavy? Undertale fictives?
The cringe subreddits would gobble you all up in a heartbeat.
And you know what the most incredible part of this is???
You're supporting them!
You give them the moral justification they need. You support this ridiculous narrative that there are these groups who are causing DID to not be taken seriously by... existing... often, in the case of most endogenic systems, not even claiming to have a disorder in the first place. Just... being plural.
And you give the okay for these singlets to feel morally justified in attacking and fakeclaiming systems just like your own.
You are EVERYTHING wrong with the system community.
You're the reason systems fear expressing themselves online or in public. The reason fakeclaiming is so rampant. You contribute to this toxic environment of fear and paranoia in system spaces.
You're not defending the system community.
YOU ARE THE ONES RUINING THIS COMMUNITY!
You're just a bunch of cyberbullies.
And the same goes for anybody supporting you too.
(And before anybody takes issue with me posting this when two of the bullies acting as admins for the blog are minor-bodied, I'm just going to remind you again that another one of their posts which I didn't share here targeted a 14-year-old polyfragmented DID system, so I really don't care about the ages of the bullies in the slightest.)

saying that something 'is fictional' does not equal condoning it in real life. People say that their dark content stories are fictional because .. they are. These are not real scenarios or wishful thinking, they're exploring a dark subject in a fictional environment with characters that are not real, and it's really messed up how folks (including you) will dogpile on and attack just because someone saw a post they didn't like the tags and content warnings of, then decided to take it public.
This is evidenced by the fact that the original op hasn't even *read* the fic in question. It was tagged properly, they could've avoided it if they filtered out content they didn't like, yet they CHOSE to engage with it and take it public.
Imagine if your posts were taken out of context in that way. What if people started calling you a zo/ophile because of your dragon posts, despite the fact that dragons aren't real? I doubt that'd feel great for you, especially if you suddenly had a bunch of outraged people in your inbox accusing you of animal abuse because you ... Wrote a story.
And honestly, if you feel the need to participate in these sorts of discussions by jumping in headfirst on the first callout post you see disparaging people then it might be time to take a step back from Tumblr for a while. In most cases, social media like this is not a productive conduit for conversations and it just winds up being a slapfight about who can send the most petty, mean messages to one another or coerce more people into harassing the other until they delete or deactivate.
i havent seen the writers blog but a mutual of mine did and they said that the writer seemed to be in a not so okay mental state as they had said smt smt abt being in love with their own brother who is a real person and was trying to defend their fic. as ive said, in my current opinion, dark content writing and consuming is fine if its done in a healthy manner. but defending it just seems wrong yknow?
and yeah, like youve said, i am done with tumblr. i dont understand why you decided to come here anon when i stated in my latest anon answer that i was finished with talking about this thing. tumblr is becoming a not so safe place it seems. i am sorry if the things ive said/write were harmful or negative, i was simply trying to say that condoning dark content bc it was simply fiction and romanticizing it was weird. that was all i wanted to say

How can you be so sure of yandev’s innocence though? How do you know if you’re biased just as much as the antis are biased since those dumbasses think “oh he sexualized underage pixels of course he would do this” I mean you can be biased in favour of a person as well
Idk antis are dumbasses but this guy seems sketchy (not cause of his game but like this is the second time he’s been accused of this sort of thing )
which doenst nessailry mean he did it but idk
1) The teenager this supposedly happened to said the "evidence" had been deliberately manipulated. This is credible because it's happened to Alex before in regards to other allegations (people changing or editing his words or taking them wildly out of context)
2) She also said she was "not traumatized or groomed by him and not a victim." She said his words were taken and edited drastically out of context to make it seem as if Alex was making sexual advances on her, which he was not.
3) Alex apologized for his conduct but said he did not make sexual advances on a minor, and the girl's story matches up as well.
4) The alleged victim released screenshots of the YouTuber who broke the "story" using very manipulative and controlling language towards her and repeating that she had been groomed when she disagreed with that assessment.
5) the anti YandereDev subreddit r/Osana deleted the alleged victim's post and went on to harass her and call her names and make disgusting claims about her supposed brainwashing by Alex, which is a horrific way to treat someone they think is a grooming victim (even though she was not groomed by Alex and I suspect the antis know that on some level too)
6) the first allegation you mentioned was posted on a throwaway Tumblr blog and had very little evidence besides a picture of "I love EvaXepheon*" written on someone's arm in sharpie, and someone saying they loved him in his public stream chat. It also said the alleged grooming took place in Skype convos that were deleted by Skype, but Skype back then would not only not delete conversations but save every single one. Needless to say, that one is incredibly shady.
*Alex's tag as a streamer before he was YandereDev
7) I can't tell what exactly you mean by sketchy, but as we say in the proship community, DLDW

sent this into the other aita but the blog went on hiatus before it was posted so.
wibta for making a fake account to lurk in a discord server i used to be part of?
context: i was in a small discord server for upwards of a year. i was one of the first few there, kind of a central member of the server (i don’t mean this in a self centered way, like i’m not saying everyone loved me. i just mean i was one of the few core/most active members. there was a little core community of maybe 5 or 10 people that i was part of.) i considered many ppl there my friends, the mods included, but to be clear this wasn’t a friends server and the invite link is in public tumblr posts (it was based around a shared interest.)
well, long story short, the mods deliberately attempted to push me + a friend out of the server because they disliked us (warning us for things that weren’t against the rules, lying to us about phrasing of previous warning messages we had screenshots of, etc. keeping this vague in case any of them is aware of this blog but truly 99% of it was not real issues where we did anything wrong and we gracefully accepted it every time, even when undeserved.) we got sick of this eventually and left (so they got what they wanted i guess), no drama in the server, no public goodbye message, most we did on discord was dm a mod we both considered our friend goodbye. we did both make a handful of vent posts about the situation on tumblr, none of which had the actual name of the server or the mods’ names apart from one vent post where i sarcastically told people not to join it in the tags, using an abbreviated version of the name only other server members would recognize. maybe five people from the server followed the two of us collectively on tumblr. really not something that would impact the main server community.
the mods made an announcement about this essentially calling us both liars and me dangerous/a threat to the server. fast forward to now maybe a month or two later. i do miss a lot of people in the server quite a bit and considered myself good friends with some of them but. i did think the mods were my friends too. so atp im not sure if they felt the same way.
the actual judgeable part: lately i’ve been considering the idea of making a fake account to join the server, make a fake intro (part of the verification process or i wouldn’t even do this) and send literally no other messages, then search my name to see if anything was said about me/try to figure out if they still consider me a friend, and leave. i wouldn’t befriend them under false pretenses using this account or anything obviously, just lurk for a bit and see what they’ve said about me. but it does kind of feel like i would be crossing a boundary by doing this? so. aita.

maybe ridiculous to say but like
it seems so much more difficult to get to know someone without tumblr?
I think the microblog format sitting in this vaguely defined space in the middle of these other extremes of what you're supposed to post on social media sort of helps people find a place on the spectrum of how much you express yourself that they might otherwise have no reason to find. like, so few people actually go out and make "a blog," in the traditional sense, not just because of the technical process of setting that up but because there's an expectation that when you post on your blog you have something to say. it's like how many youtubers have their main channel only have big projects once they become popular and wind up with a personal channel or shorts or tiktok or whatever for content that doesn't feel in the moment like, oh, this is part of my oeuvre, this is just casual, you know?
while tumblr, I guess, has the reblogging-without-comment thing that you could be doing every day, because oh, you know, I'm just an aesthetic blogger or whatever, right? or oh I just reblog memes it's a fun time. but then, hey, you can talk in the tags if you want, no pressure. hey if there's something on your mind there's a full post form right here. don't worry, posts are pretty ephemeral, it'll get buried in your reblogs anyway, it's not a big deal, you don't have to put any effort into it. but, whoops, you're learning to express yourself, bit by bit. maybe you get 20 notes on a fandom post and go, hey, that's what it's like to communicate with a group, I think next time I'll adjust my wording a bit or whatever it is that that teaches you.
we always joke, you know, that we know so much about the people we follow on tumblr re: what they like and what they believe but so little about e.g. basic demographics, because it's true. but I think you can look at that from the perspective of like "haha tumblr means you don't know people's faces and real names," but also from that of like "look at all of these people who you wouldn't otherwise have known anything about at all"
I guess that turned into a post about something else, but the point I was originally going to make is that when the opposite is true, when you meet someone and learn their face and real name, it's hard to be like hey, how can I get to a place where I can talk to you about the things we have mutual interests in, from a shared context? sure I can try to pull information out of you and you can try to pull information out of me, but that just seems inefficient. the tumblr model allows one to organically find that overlap, by mutually pushing things out into the world instead of pulling on what's potentially the wrong thread. it just gives you a lot of information, because it provides a natural way for people to put that information out there.
I dunno. just thinking about this because of someone I'd like to be friends with who for various good reasons doesn't use public social media. and it's like, sure, I can have a regular conversation, that's not fundamentally a problem, but it's just so much complete shot in the dark where to go with it, as compared to people on tumblr I've never talked to directly but easily could.

What Is This, Anyway?
A youtube channel! Well, specifically, it's the blog of a youtube channel that I'm creating for the specific purpose of putting some good, engaging, actually-fucking-cited history video essays out there.
See, it occurred to me a while ago that maybe, just maybe, all the American zoomers and millennials going around saying things like "I feel like my history education was severely lacking, because in 2020, all the sudden all these protests were referencing historical events that I'd never even heard of, and I really want to know more about history," might actually want to know more about history. And that maybe, just maybe, the reason people weren't engaging with history had less to do with the idea we've somehow been sold that it's Inherently Boring and more to do with lack of access.
The problem is, when I looked around the internet at accessible "history" on platforms like podcasts, TikTok, and Youtube (and, frankly, Tumblr), there were ~4 categories:
Well-researched, accurate history, but boring as fuck*
Pretty well-researched, but lacking citations, context, and/or using outdated, incorrect analysis**
One-off videos, which then become part of the discourse because they sound plausible - sometimes true, usually partly true, partly hyperbole or incorrect extrapolation.
Complete Lies, Now With A Grain Of Truth! - hot takes on history by people who are either conspiracy theorists, propagandists, lying grifters, or all three***
But I am a historian. I work with a lot of brilliant, entertaining, thoughtful, ethical, careful historians who have a lot of interesting things to say, and whose work, I think, would land incredibly well with people who are looking online for history they never got taught in school. It's just that our discipline doesn't value digital projects, for some reason, and that a lot of historians are too busy, and that a lot of us are not great with technology.
And but so anyway, I'm good at public speaking****, know my way around modern technology pretty well, care a lot about history and particularly the way we teach and learn it, and get really irritated both by historians who shrug and say "Well, guess people don't care about history anymore," instead of "How can we reach out to people who want to learn history," and by, well, the bad history I see masquerading as good history across the web.
Because people who want to learn deserve better!
[it has only just occurred to me that putting footnotes in the tags means they will not show up in reblogs. future footnotes will be behind a readmore cut.]
#meta post#faq#youtube link#*i'm not going to give an example here because these are my soon-to-be colleagues and i don't want to hurt their feelings#**crash course; you're wrong about#***these range from Hot Takes to Insane Diatribes to Plausible-sounding But Mostly-untrue essays#for example: They Started Killing Witches to Destroy Successful Female Breweries... or White People Were in South Africa First. etc.#****this was physically difficult to type. i forced myself to delete 'pretty good' and just say 'good'. i cast thee OUT impostor syndrome!

ok so 1. this post was not supposed to blow up like this. i had no idea that was going to happen. if i had expected ANYBODY to reblog it i would have added sources. if i had known it would reach 22,000+ notes i simply never would have posted it at all. i post screenshots of news articles i happen to read all the time. none of them have ever blown up to this extent before and hopefully they never will again because this shit literally broke my activity tab yesterday.
2. the first person to add a link to the article in the reblogs did so at somewhere between 300 and 500 notes. the first person to question whether or not it was real did so at around 900 notes. meaning at no point could anyone who wasn’t sure if it was real not have simply clicked into the notes and found said link. the post gained somewhere in the neighborhood of 6,000 notes overnight, during which several MORE people added links in the reblogs. and yet people were still leaving tags and comments indicating that they didn’t know if it was real and/or they didn’t believe it was real. i don’t think anyone actually asked for a source. it was all “i don’t know if/think this is real.” it was at this point that i added the edit to the original post, because…
3. i get being skeptical of misinformation and not automatically trusting things you see online. but what do we do when that happens? we attempt to independently verify. if you have access to tumblr.com, you also have access to google.com. if you typed in “michael imperioli” in the google search bar at the time that i posted this, the variety article that i screenshotted would have been one of the first things to pop up. the variety article is not behind a paywall. michael imperioli’s instagram is public and can be viewed without an account. this is something that takes about two seconds to verify, and i rest my case that choosing to spend those two seconds instead leaving a comment/tag saying you don’t know if it’s real or not is indeed stupid.
4. literally why would i fake this? why would i go to all the effort of making a fake news headline and excerpt complete with a stock photo of michael imperioli and just slap a variety writer’s name on there? do you not think it’s more likely that i was simply reading the news and saw something i wanted to screenshot and post? we don’t need to assume EVERYTHING is misinformation just because it’s on the internet.
5. variety was the first source i saw reporting this story but it was FAR from the only source. people in the notes have also linked cnn and vanity fair. even fox news ran a story on it. it was in the apple news trending section for a while yesterday. if you are relying on MY blog, gob bluth but a girl dot tumblr dot com, as your main news outlet, then we have bigger problems here than whether or not i linked the full article when i first made the post. if you’re someone who actually reads the news on a regular basis, you will be able to tell whether or not my post is misinformation because you will see it somewhere else besides my blog.
6. you should not get your news from tumblr. if you do get your news from tumblr, i reserve the right to consider you stupid. again, EVERYTHING in those two screenshots is easily googleable! if you’re an adult in the united states or any other country where your access to information is not restricted by the government you need to be reading the actual news. there is no excuse not to! yes the new york times has a paywall but a whole bunch of sites do NOT. if you have an iphone you have access to the apple news app which will show you tons of articles from tons of sources for free! there is no excuse!
7. your comment is also not helpful. but hey, at least now you have context!
edit because some of you guys are stupid and don’t believe this is real for whatever reason: here is the variety article these screenshots came from & his instagram post itself
#i’m not saying asking for sources is stupid i’m saying commenting you don’t think/know if something is real#instead of taking the time to check is stupid#yes i realize i sound mad but you have to understand. this was a post i thought might get 10 notes#and it got 22000

12/10/24: Imaginary Audience and Screen Addiction
It's an uncertainty, journaling on this site like this. One blog among many, no followers, no tags. But definitely on the internet, public in a sense, definitely not private. I think it has something to do with when I grew up. Social media was new and exciting, and no one knew how it would fuck us up. How it would claw its way into our brain chemistry and social development. How it would play off of the expected psychological phenomena of adolescence and magnify them. I think this is why I journal here, something to do with familiarity and comfort with the UI. Something about recreating the context of adolescence.
...
I spent a TON of time on my phone today, definitely went over my self-imposed limits on various apps and definitely didn't study as much as I intended to. Probably something to do with waking up so early and being thrown off my schedule; Waking up at 5:00 AM either means getting a suuuper early start on your day, or falling for the trap of your phone and getting duped by the illusion of having time to waste. I had decent intentions when I grabbed my phone this morning, looking to put on some ASMR to help me get back to sleep and sleep in. Foolish, utterly foolish. As soon as that screen is within reach, so too is the boundless distraction that it offers.
I've been watching Supernatural again too, since its on Netflix. Tumblr. Fandoms. Before long I'll be UWUing and XDing all over again too.
I'm going to try doing the proper sleep hygiene tonight to see if I can have a disciplined day tomorrow. I feel like Not Studying is viable and commensurate with my current Effort to Desired Outcome ratio, but Studying would be the socially respectable thing to do. Also the responsible thing to do; I have no guarantee that I'll be able to swing a 65% without studying, just a strong gut feeling based on the last data point. It'd be mighty foolish to have to wait a year to graduate because I didn't want to put in a few hours of work this week.
So yeah. Imma shower, plug my phone in downstairs, and try and get a good night's sleep. Imma try to eat breakfast and do the rest of my morning speedrun as soon as possible tomorrow. If necessary, Imma rewatch that Dr. K video about how habits don't work, and you gotta embrace the suck and work hard to build the life you want.
Ugghhhhh, such a draaaagggggggg.
Okay, goodnight.

Took a long break from tumblr and came back only for a personal blog not meant to be widely read but decided to look at the xg tags and man... tumblr users are still cranking out really dumb takes based on hearsay despite 15 or so years of maturing social awareness. I'd really like it if we stopped using CA as a term describing anybody utilizing a tool/concept originating from race-based cultural identities. The usage does NOT immediately define appropriation, and I would have thought this site was more comfortable with nuance. Remember the word "reappropriation" in order to remember what "appropriate" means in this context. Dictionary definitions aside, appropriation is a misuse and, above all, a THEFT of whatever the subject implies. You can use the term when someone is using culturally defined attire/makeup to make a mockery of the culture in the same way we might dress up like a nurse on halloween. This is the root of "my culture is not a costume" talking point. It also applies to people who use culturally defined ideas to benefit in some way at the expense of that specific culture. This applies to a lot of white rappers in the west - taking good music from good artists but being palatable to white people instead of white people... ya know... stopping being racist. Its an exploitation of racism specifically that edges out artists. It also tends to be mediocre to bad in quality since... as can be obvious... the experiences of people in a culture are more earnestly expressed in whatever it is that was stolen. Now... if we look back at musical history specifically, we should be looking at WHO has been dominating top 100 charts/hits over the last 15ish years compared to the years previous. This is a good thing! Black people doing numbers but this doesn't mean that fight is over ofc. What this means is that the global soft power of western media has gotten noticeably darker. This subsequently means that people drawing genuine influence from western media will be drawing influence from black people without the context of American black history AND without actually interfering with black spaces. Frankly, I consider it a lot more honest when a kpop/asian group actually openly recognizes the black influence on their music, and it annoys me without end that the primary CA critics of XG don't seem to see a difference between a kpop group dressing up like "gangsters" in durags saying the N word vs a group whose most criticized media (their non-canon raps and such. Non-canon? W/e) is essentially "we stand on the shoulders of greats and aspire to them" There are better arguments to be made for CA when applied to the relationship between the japanese and koreans, especially about historical power and oppression vs modern nationalism but nobody is making those arguments. Instead we pretend that Everywhere is America and if it looks like locs from 300 feet away if we squint then its locs and they're racist. (for the love of god Jurin did not have locs at HITC) but also I'd like to remind everyone that asians are not white and broadly painting the same CA rules on non-white people, let alone non-western, is going to require a lot more nuance to enforce. Addendum: does this slack regarding knowledge about the white and black cultural relationships diminish over time and XGs popularity? Yes. Do I give them further slack because I know how many black and non-asian POC work on their projects? Yes. Do I wish they had someone sit them down to explain the tightrope they need to walk if they want to aim their entertainment in the same direction as the black people they admire? Absolutely. If you are black or a person of color I don't think its right to be policed about these sort of opinions (and I am posting here as a personal collection of thoughts and not... for instance ... in response to someone or in a more public space) so I hope this isn't taken that way if someone stumbles on this.

tumblr etiquette 101
a list that is nowhere near exhaustive, from yours truly.
First off, welcome! Whether you’re a twitter veteran looking for anything but whatever twitter is, or a new user just done signing up, glad to see you in our ranks beloveds! Welcome home. Refer to this quick tour to make sure your fandom experience (or tumblr experience in general) is a positive one!
Disclaimer: I know it’s long, but please try to read or skim through til the end if you’re new here! This is by no means meant to be a rule book (for the most part lol), only a guide to help you get settled easier!
1) Your blog
This is where people will see and interact with you, so put some effort into it!
Try to choose a name (url) that’s simple. You can see it as your brand, it’s how people will perceive you and remember you. If you’d like to interact with other users here (and not use the site just for the content) it’s better to have something short and sweet, preferably without spaces. (Of course, these are only suggestions.) Rest assured, you can change it literally any time you want.
Have a theme. Utilize the tool that lets you edit your blog’s color or the font of your bio! You can make it match your profile picture, or your blog if it has a theme of its own. Make it feel homey :]
Fill in your bio. People will be checking out your profile probably more often than you think. Don’t leave it empty! Put in any information you’re comfortable with sharing and isn’t too personal (like your age if you’re a minor, or other TMI that can be found on other people’s carrds). It’s always better to add a name/nickname people can use to refer to you by, but feel free to use your blog description to shitpost still.
You can have an intro post. More often than not, you’ll see a blog have a pinned post, a post permanently appearing at the top of a blog until you pin another post or unpin it. You can make one of those, if you’d like to introduce yourself in more length, link any other socials or a carrd, and show others visiting your blog how you tag things so it’ll be easy for them to navigate. Not an obligation.
Keep your anonymity and your safety. It should go without saying, but there’s no harm in repeating it just in case. Your comfort, privacy and safety has the utmost importance. Don’t share any information you don’t want to. Don’t share your age if you’re a minor, or any other incredibly personal info. I’d encourage you to go by a nickname that’s not your real name, (blog name, your brand, remember?) since there’s safety in anonymity, and that’s lowkey one of the big deals of tumblr, but that’s up to you still.
Choose what you want to be visible. Your liked posts and who you follow are all things you can set to keep to yourself and hide from the publics eye, how handy! You should go through all the setting while you’re at it, set it to your comfort.
Side blogs are a thing. You can have multiple blogs that you can use for different things (see: different fandoms, art blog, etc) to keep them organized or away from your followers. Just remember that the replies and off-anon asks you send will be from your main blog, as well as where you follow other blogs from.
2) Interacting with others
You’ve set up your account, now comes the fun part!
Follow to your heart’s desire. If you care about others seeing who you follow, fear not! In tumblr, usually only two types of blogs keep their following visible to others: newbies, and big blogs using it to point people on other good blogs’ direction. Just turn it off, and go ham following people.
Customize your dashboard. Gonna mention just two things here: this is another reason why it’s really important that you follow blogs without sparing, your dash will collect dust otherwise; and you should turn off “best stuff first” in your dashboard settings, to have a better community here and all.
Follow tags. You can set it in your settings that posts with your followed tags appear on your dashboard.
You can check the og post for edits and context. When you see a reblogged post you don’t understand the context of (or don’t recognize the character in case of fanarts), click on the profile so it will take you to the original post. From there you can check the original poster’s tags to get the context, or see if there have been any edits made to the post, since when you edit a post it doesn’t update any past reblogs.
Send people asks... This is how you make mutuals, people! Do it off-anon if you’d like them to know your blog, or anon if you’d rather not! (You can still end your messages with a signature to show you’re the same person, -[name] is one example.) Send them nice messages, ask their opinion on something, discuss things, or just straight up shitpost lol. Go wild. The sky’s your limit and it’s definitely more than 280 characters.
...and let them ask you! You can set your preference in the settings, do it on desktop tumblr to access more settings tho! What you can customize on mobile is limited (like letting people ask you things anonymously, that’s only on desktop settings). In my personal opinion, it’s always better to tag their username (or a nickname you give them, if they’re a friend) on that post, since you wouldn’t want your interactions with your friends to get buried in your blog forever.
Comment on posts. If you have something to say but don’t want the post to appear on your blog you can add a comment. The owner of the post will get a notif for it, but for anyone else you need to tag them.
For the love of god, reblog. People will only see your liked posts if you have it visible to public and they specifically go on your blog to look at them. You like something? You reblog. It’s already hard for posts to circulate properly, if you don’t reblog them literally no one will see them. If not for anything do it for the artists. Just hold and drag on mobile to fast rb.
3) Your Posts
Finally here! Don’t be a lurker, post and engage!
Make use of “read more”. If your post is long, add it. That’s what you clicked on earlier to expand this post. On desktop leave an empty line and you’ll see three dots appear, and on mobile type :readmore: on that empty line.
Draft a post to come back to it later. Pretty self explanatory.
Queue your post. Whether it’s your own post or you’re reblogging, make use of the queue feature to a) not spam reblog and fill up the dashboard of people following you and b) keep your blog active while you’re gone. Mess around in the settings, it’s fairly easy to set up.
Schedule your post. Same as queueing, the only difference is you get to choose the exact time your post will go up. Handy if you want to schedule a post for certain dates like april fools, or 5 years in the future for some reason.
Format your texts. You can do all kinds of fancy stuff here (that’s a link, try pressing on it). Twitter doesn’t have this, make use of it. Changes depending on whether you’re on mobile or desktop. (Desktop has less features.)
Check your stats. If you’re trying to understand the algorithm better or want to look at some pretty graphs you can get your data on that on desktop tumblr.
@ people in comments. You’ll get all the notifs when people comment on your posts but they won’t see your reply unless you tag them in your message.
4) Tags, and tagging a post
This is where my earlier statement “this isn’t a rule book” stops being applicable. It’s not a war crime to go against these, I won’t come chasing you (don’t take my word for this) but you’ll work up a bad rep. Just saying lol.
Do NOT crosstag posts. It’s really tempting to add unrelated tags to increase your posts’ interaction, I know, but that’s not what tumblr is about. Don’t be a dick and make other communities’ experience worse for them.
Always tag your posts with “crit/critical/discourse/etc” if it calls for it. There’s no exceptions to it. This is the reason you see people migrating to tumblr. Let people enjoy things.
Don’t main tag a critical/negative post. If your crit post is about “Thing”, you add the “Thing critical” tag, but not the “Thing” tag. People block crit tags if they don’t want to see it, don’t shove it in their faces by main tagging it.
If you don’t want to see something, just block it. Another reason why people are able to survive on tumblr. You don’t start discourse, you don’t make call-outs, you block. You can find something for every community you can think of if you go looking for it. The worst of the worst probably won’t ever appear on your dash, but if you’re worried or feel the need for it, you know where the block button is.
Feel free to shitpost or ramble. More often than not you’ll see people rb a post with a comment, and their elaboration will be in the tags. The tags are only visible on your profile and the notifications of the owner of the og blog. Just a thing people do.
Reblog artists’ posts with nice comments in the tags! Commenting on a drawing is usually done through the tags (Not an obligation, again, just a thing people do. Feel free to add your comment on the rb itself if you’d want other people to see it tho!) and leave nice messages for the artists! It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
If you have more than a single follower, always use the common tw warning tags. You don’t need to tw everything, but tw’ing some common things is the bare minimum human decency. Keep it safe for others.
Tag a post “long post” if it’s really long. Pretty self explanatory. Don’t make people scroll through all that please lol.
You can use them to organize your blog. This is more of a pro tip, if you’d like to not miss a post in your blog, cause they will start pilin’ up soon enough.
#Liveblogging is pretty fun. If you’d like to talk to people during streams, don’t forget to add the relevant tags still! Again, you won’t show up on people’s dash otherwise.
Whew! That got out of hand. Hopefully I didn’t bore you too much. Check out blogs like @heritageposts and @hellsite-hall-of-fame to honor our past o7. @mcytblr-hall-of-fame too maybe :eyes:. Anyways, don’t forget the most important rule of them all:
Enjoy your stay! You’re meant to have fun on here while also making friends (if that’s your thing). Just be kind and respectful of others, you’ll get the hang of the rest! <3
#mcyttwt#mcytblr#dream team#dream smp#mcyt#dsmp#tumblr#how to tumblr#gonna tag ppl now so more users will see it lol#dreamwasteken#georgenotfound#karl jacobs#technoblade#sbi#twitter#twitter discourse#sbitwt#sleepytwt#sleepy bois inc#HOLY shit this took so long omg my back literally hurts rn#the fuckin lengths i go to make sure tumblr doesnt get tainted w twt LMAO#anyways if youre seeing this you should follow me look at how sexy i am i spent the last 2+ hours typing this goddamn list out#also: ignore how i literally sound like its 2014 at some parts here lol i tried my best#also ignore how wack the paragraph breaks are tumblrs formatting hates me and its 4 am im too tired for this#third also: some bits here are supposed to be ironic keep that in mind pls#rolan.txt#long post#save#yes im tagging my own post as save what about it

Why can't you accept that Mary was the love of Freddie's life? If Freddie were still alive and he knew how you talked about Mary, he would hate you. Yes, he loved Mary and he loved Jim too, accept it.
Because I do not think being the ex-girlfriend of a gay man who’s in a committed, loving relationship, in which he “[didn’t] have to try so hard” or “prove [himself]”, with another man, the man he called husband, the “niche [he had been] looking for all [his] life” is congruent with being the love of his life.
I think she is someone who he loved and cherished very much, one of the few extremely meaningful relationships he had. But I consider the love of Freddie’s life to be someone who loved, understood, accepted Freddie for all he was, someone with whom Freddie felt so comfortable and at home, so that he could be himself around them - and that is not Mary. Not the Mary who said she didn’t understand the relationships he had with men, who Freddie acted a certain way with (and not in a good way) because of this exact lack of understanding of who he was as a person - someone who wanted love, companionship and fulfilment in their love and sex life, just like a lot of straight people, only that he wanted that with someone of the same sex. Now that’s^^^ what I think being the love of someone’s life means, maybe your definition is different 🤷♀️
Whether Freddie could see what I say about Mary would not change what I said or will say. (And the fact is he won’t ever.) I stand by my opinion that she’s less than kind to his friends and loved ones, if not downright cruel with some of her behaviour that could not be excused with grief. The way she handled Freddie’s death, especially in the press, reeks of homophobia - and not just ignorant, tactless remarks that could be at least perceived as merely a product of its time, but condescending, callous, insulting cheap shots at his gay loved ones at the height of the AIDS crisis right after Freddie passed. The things she did and said were choices she actively made, and a lot of them imo were done in bad taste. She did it in the public arena going to the press, and it’s horrifying to think of what she said in the context of the overt homophobic zeitgeist at the time, especially what “the love of Freddie Mercury’s life” had to say would’ve garnered a lot of public interest.
Also, I do accept that Freddie loved both Mary and Jim. But do most people who insist Mary was the love of Freddie’s life accept that? What I’m concerned with is that people who hold the belief “Mary was the love of his life” more often than not perpetuate the ideas that 1) he did not love Jim, or not nearly as enough as he did Mary, and 2) because the love of Freddie’s life was a woman, he was bisexual. I mean, what does this belief (“Mary was the love of Freddie’s life”) say? That the ex-girlfriend of a gay man, a gay man happy and in love with another gay man, meant more to him and was more loved by him in comparison to the man whom he called husband? It’s the homophobic implications of that statement and the misconceptions it causes that I have a problem with.
Finally, I am one (1) small blog on Tumblr, and I doubt Mary herself is looking at what I have to say about her. If what I say here offends you, you can very well filter certain tags (I do have a “#mary austin” tag) or just block me.
