do you have any analysis on monsters *not* being stand-ins for the oppressed? my personal favorite example is ouroboros bc the gorgon is obviously representing someone who preys on gay men and while definitely not straight (or at least appearing to not be straight to lure gay men) at no point does steve yockey (a gay man) use this fact to frame the winchesters as being "too hard" on monsters. like he could just not eat gay men but hes specifically targeting them (possibly bc they wont be missed)

Monsters most of the time are not stand-ins for the oppressed. It's far easier to put the onus on people who think otherwise to prove monsters are always (or are usually) stand-ins for the oppressed, given the vast majority of the episodes in SPN don't support that assertion at all. Monsters in SPN are almost always oppressors. Sam and Dean hunt murderers who kill supernaturally. The people they hunt very rarely murder people for any other reason than they enjoy it or see humans as bodies to exploit (for food or pleasure) who are unworthy of rights or dignity. The episodes where monsters are not monsters but are actually being victimized just stick out in our minds more. Ex: People remember Lenore and Benny as vampires being unfairly hunted and tend to be more forgetful about Boris, the Alpha vampire, and the vampires from 1.20, all of whom prey on the vulnerable and are heavily implied to take pleasure in sexually assaulting their victims. Throw a stone and you'll more than likely hit an episode of SPN where monsters are not stand-ins for the oppressed. We can also consider the larger organized groups of monsters TFW spends a lot of time battling like the angels, the demons, the Leviathan, the Stynes... all of whom tend to believe more broadly that they are entitled to the bodies of humans, that they are entitled to kill, eat, possess, exploit, and otherwise use them for any reason they would like, and will threaten, beat, coerce, manipulate to get what they want at the expense of the humans they view as beneath them.

The idea that monsters in SPN somehow always (or even half the time) represent the oppressed is a demonstrable overgeneralization attributable to a portion of spnblr's tendency to forget the show they actually watched and just write about a show they made up instead for no other reason ultimately than that it allows them to present themselves (they think) as morally and intellectually superior fans in some way.

I saw your one post about Yuu getting super powers. I don't think it's very likely as well. I think it's largely thanks to western storytelling expectations and tropes for the western audience.

In a lot of western YA or Middle Grade books, the protagonist in a fantasy series will start off as ordinary, standing out and never fitting in. It turns out that they are indeed special and powerful in their own right. Think Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Clary Fray, and the list goes on and on.

There are also times when the protagonist is forced to change forms literally to become more powerful. For example, Feyre from ACOTAR starts out as a simple human. But then, she is killed off, and then is brought back to life as a High Fae. Same goes for Bella from Twilight where she dies during childbirth to a demon spawn, and then she is transformed into a vampire.

Western audiences are expecting something similar to happen. But, it's not very likely due to "main character" and individualism not being as much of a thing in East Asia. I've never seen as many stories like that from Japan as I have from the west out of all of my years of being a manga/anime fan.

Although, having said that, Yuu is still something to be desired writing wise. I still wish that Yuu had more of an impact on the plot and had more personality than a tuna can. I don't expect them to be a fully fledged character on par with the rest of the cast. Even other otome and JRPG self inserts like Persona 5 I feel are better written than them, because they matter more and the dialogue choices impact the game more. They are the main character. Act like it!

There's certain genres of animanga that have those power fantasy/wish fulfillment tropes that we see in western media. A big one that comes to mind are fantasy isekais where the main character tends to be a weirdo or a loner that's actually super powerful/smart and quickly amasses a group of doting anime girls to fawn over him (although now isekai is much more diversified as a genre). It's definitely not just something exclusive to western media, although I will say maybe it's more prevalent in the west (again, due to differences in cultural values).

I feel like we need to remember that Twst is ultimately Japanese media, so it will most likely default to Japanese storytelling conventions and trends, not western ones. While it's fine to wish for a different version of events or to dislike the current version, we should be careful to not let personal frustrations turn into demands to cater to those wishes.

I will say that I've noticed the localization attempts to give Yuu more... character? Many of Yuu's dialogue options are written to be more sarcastic than they originally were. The JP dialogue options are much more neutral. Here are some examples from book 1 alone:

After fighting some mob students in the cafeteria, Yuu has "Even though we were just told to not get into fights" and "I thought we were done for..." as options. In EN, Yuu's options are, "What happened to 'no more incidents'?" and "I guess this is my life now. *Sigh*". You can see how Yuu reads as sassier or more fed up in the latter, even if the same overall message is conveyed.

When seeing Jack for the first time, Yuu's Japanese options are "He has dog ears!?" and "A muscular guy with dog ears is a new sight". In EN, the top option is basically the same, but the second option becomes "Muscly dog man, sure why not."

Other dialogue options change entirely. For example, when Leona threatens to claim a tooth as retribution for Yuu stepping on his tail, our options are, "EEEEEH!!" and "H-He's going to hit us!" EN's options become much more humorous, with Yuu either claiming "Please! I don't have dental insurance!" or "I can't afford to pay anything!"

These are just a few examples, and not even all of the dialogue options in book 1 that exemplify what I’m talking about. I hope that this helps illustrate what I mean!

I think it can be argued that Yuu does have an impact on the plot, but the way the story is written doesn’t grant them much agency. There are points where Yuu makes decisions of their own volition but then the story never commits to letting them be entirely independent. For example, a lot of players like book 3 because they feel it is when Yuu is the most involved in the story. They make the decision to make a deal with Azul, and then they contribute to figuring out a way to outwit him—but then in later books, Yuu basically stands there doing nothing (lookin’ at you specifically, book 5). Yuu also doesn’t get to spend a lot of alone time with the characters to actually… I don’t know, influence their change and growth? Their activity and involvement is just wildly inconsistent. I have my own gripes with how Yuu is written and proposed my own ideas for how I would change them. If you’re interested in reading that, the post is here.

It might not be the best to compare Yuu to otome and JRPG self inserts 💦 In otomes (or general dating sims; I’d like to be inclusive of my non-women audience), romance is the primary objective. Of course the self-insert player character will be the center of the story and the one that the other characters will revolve around. JRPGs are typically console games; they have more bandwidth to go bigger and be more ambitious with their stories + gameplay than your average visual novel style mobile gacha game. (I specify “average” because I know there are now open world and 3D style gacha games.) The story of every game is also different and might call for different kinds of main characters to most effectively tell us its tale. Having an active main character isn’t needed for every story, and nor does having an active character automatically make a story better.

I’ve noticed that we commonly conflate the terms “main character” and “protagonist”, especially when it comes to Yuu. To clarify, the “main character” is the one whose perspective the story is primarily told (ie our POV character). A “protagonist” is who the story is actually about, the person who drives the story forward. “Protagonists” are the ones facing challenges and undergoing significant change in the story. A “main character” and a “protagonist” may be the same person, but they could also be separate people.

Yuu may be the “main character” in the sense that we see the story mainly through them (as someone who is brand new to Twisted Wonderland, much like the player is). This makes Yuu an excellent sponge and prompter for lore and explanations to be dropped on us. However, I don’t think that Yuu is also a “protagonist” for most of the game. I would say that the protagonists are the main cast of NRC students, especially the OB boys. These are the characters the story truly centers on, and this is reflected across events and vignettes as well. Yuu appears in very few vignettes and is often a footnote conveniently dragged along on events. So much of Twst’s content revolves around the boys, their relationships to one another, and how they develop and better themselves. Does Yuu play a part in that, no matter how minor? Yes. Does Yuu also form friendships with these boys? Also yes. But this is not the bulk of game content, nor what most of the conflicts or solutions focus on. So 💦 Yuu definitely “acts like a main character” (ie being the lens we view the story through), but doesn’t “act like a protagonist” (ie is active in the story and pushes it forward, is the one that significantly changes, etc).

-Edgar, along with having the infinite amount of allergies mentioned in my last post, has a terrible immune system, like bro is sick almost every other week.

-Michael died once. When he was like 9 he hit his head on a railing and died for about a minute. For a few months after, Sam would drag him away from that spot if he ever saw him go near it, and even when he got older and almost completely forgot about the whole thing he still felt uneasy around it.

-Unlike Edgar, Alan only gets sick every year or so, and when he does, he feels like death and can't get up for like a week, it's really bad.

-The squad (or whatever you guys call them I'm more active with AMB content so I'm not familiar with group terms) are pretty much flat broke. Any and all money they have they either find or take off the people they kill, and even if they kill some random rich person, it's really not a lot.

-A more angsty one now, the Frog parents sometimes just forget they have sons. Like they recognize them but they're so whatever they even are they just can't find it in their brain what their relationship is to them.

-The Frogs' comic store is one of the few businesses on the boardwalk that lets girlscouts sell cookies outside. One; they really don't know how they would go about NOT letting them and two; cute little girls + cookies + outside their store = more business probably.

-Stole this from a fic I read a while back on AO3, Sam has a very specific schedule but only in some aspects of his routine, like breakfast time or going for a walk down the street. If he misses the time he's supposed to do these things, he just won't do them.

-Along with having many, many 'pet' pigeons, Marko also has a lot of rats, he has names for all of both species.

-Lucy is very mom-like (idk how to describe it) specifically with Sam which embarrasses him and he thinks the Frogs judge him for it, but in reality that's just how their faces look and they're actually jealous.

-Alan is kind of like a cat?? He only warms up to certain people, he hates being wet, he's easily distracted (like if you pulled out a laser pointer he might become subtly very interested in it), he'll either be very happy with being touched or very annoyed with no indication of which outcome will happen, etc.

-For the sake of any Michael-vampire relationships not being really weird, all of them were either turned recently OR as well as not aging physically, they don't age mentally either, however that would work.

-Despite the fear of blood thing, Sam's favorite thing to have on in the backround when he's doing something are cop shows. Most every episode there's a new plot, so you can follow while also not really following I'm not projecting you are.

-Nobody knows where grandpa Emerson gets half of the things he uses for taxidermy. He gave a taxidermy dog to the Widow Johnson. A dog. We don't talk about that enough, like, pause, am I the only one that noticed that? That was a dog, right?? Am I crazy????

-The Frog brothers are both pretty decent artists.

-Sam is into a lot of kind of dorky stuff and Edgar actually pretends to be interested for him.

-Edgar and Alan both have various scars on their hands from sharpening stakes or stuff like that.

-Sam has been 'banned' from the comic store, like, 16 times for various things, a few you might be surprised by.

-Even when not, like, crazy vampire mode thing, Marko has weirdly sharp teeth. You can't notice it when looking at him, but he does bite people just for fun and they do feel it.

Ok so I have a confession…… I heavily dislike the MC from court is darkness and Ikemen villains IDK WHY I just don’t like them and feel annoyed by them a whole lot😭 my favorite MCs is like the MC of love and deep space and this might be a hot take but Yui from Diabolik lovers I love those two bro😭 but idk why I have a dislike for the MCs for court of darkness and Ikemen villains because I sometimes get upset by their decisions because they always make poor ones and because maybe they act nothing like me😭😭 like I’m NOT about to take disrespect from some guy bro💀 and it’s the fact they both naively do things that can get them in danger and cause trouble for the others😭 and it doesn’t just go for them but I kinda dislike some ML’s too like it’s not just the MCs for example idk why BUT from court of darkness idk why but I dislike Jasper a whole lot and same goes for Roger in Ikemen villains no clue why maybe it’s the glasses but I don’t like them and it makes me mad how in Ikemen villains they always make the MC do something stupid or convinces her to do something and sometimes she catches them but does it anyways like girl what😭 like for example when Alfons gave her that weird cat costume and she put it on like girl huh!? Breaking down "Where Drakeshadows Fall"

We are far from done, breaking down Sylus Myth. Grab pens and paper. This feels like connecting dots on a crime scene.

@Gem: sylus mentions that one of those weapons in the cave was used 108 times or something, and I thought "maybe the 109th time it will actually work with MC" and then I thought "109....109??? 109!!"

I will try to connect every moment we have seen on the current timeline to reference the Myth. (If I'm forgetting something, leave it in the comments)

We start at the very beginning. Sit back this may be long.

Our first encounter.

Violent, just like the first time they met in the Abyss.

MC attacks Sylus with her knife, cutting under his eye.

He strangles her. In the Myth, she is the one—

The voice in her head urging her to claim the power inside Sylus’s eye.

"After all, you and I are the same. True kindred spirits." This hit different too. Now that we know that they're bond by their soul.

And again, the second attempt. He hands her the gun and pulls the trigger himself. MC doesn’t truly want him to die, so she presses against the wound, and Sylus heals.

"Save that for the day you actually succeed in killing me."

Main Story: Cap. 1-8

MC and Stylus are at Philip's Lab (I think that was the name of the Shopkeeper). So, Sylus is desperate to resonate. And Philip is just like "she is either rejecting you, scared of you or disgusting by you..."

Um… yeah, that must’ve hurt. A lot.

There she is—his beloved, weak, without her memories, and outright rejecting him. Maybe he’s angry at her, but maybe he’s also furious about whatever happened to bring them to this point.

We know he isn't a patient man.

Main Story: Chapter 2-1

Midnight Stealth

I suppose the apology would be related to the curse—like, "Hey, you killed me, and then you brought me back. So…"

Outfit "Soft Distance": The Golden Crow's Feather of Eternity was something from the cave—can’t remember if it was a weapon or not. Either way, there’s a little nod to it in his outfit: a golden feather on his shirt that ties back to the artifact.

I'm mentioning the call because, with Searing Touch, we learn or in another way, he admits once more that MC is his biggest weakness.

MC asked him about why he was at that place. Half joking if it was because of her. Well...

Again, he would rather sacrifice himself...

Gem Hunting: Charon

No need to say much, the N109 Zone is basically Taurus City. No need for over-explaining.

If destiny continues their way, maybe MC will leave the Hunter Association. Maybe she’ll end up branded as a traitor. But like Sylus said, if she really wants to understand his world, she has to step beyond light and shadow.

Back to the event. I love their interaction and the style.

By the end, after finding the gem split in two, MC comes up with a great idea. She decides to use the gem and add it to the two bracelets she bought.

MC doesn’t care about the bad omen���in fact, she actually prefers it this way. Once again, she gives Sylus the curse of being tied to her forever.

SURPRISE! Did you think the day would come when we would cover Love Live on this blog? I didn't!

Yohane the Parhelion: Blaze in the Deepblue is the Metroidvania-style game based on the fantasy spin-off of Love Live Sunshine, but you probably don't care about that! Statistically speaking, our target audience is Bogleech readers who are deeply revolted by anime girls!

So why bring up? Why bring it up? The answer is 🐠 FUNNY FISH! It's Funny Fish Friday!

Since this game is set in an underwater temple, the enemies this game are all based on sea creatures, and that's cool! Again, statistically speaking, you probably think sea creatures are cool. I really liked seeing the variety of enemies when playing through this game, so I thought it'd be fun if I could share them with an audience of people who otherwise wouldn't care! None of the enemies really have names, as far as I'm aware of. But I'll do my Rubesty...?

Our first guy we encounter in the game is the sort of guy who emerges from the ground like the Zombies from Castlevania, and wow! A good first impression I think. It is sort of a squid mantle, if the mantle was also a cloak for a spooky sort of wizard! The way it doesn't really have a 'face' in the hood and the eye is below really makes it seem like a weird mimic creature. Cool!

They also get a tough lategame variant which looks like a mix between a flapjack and a vampire squid. You don't often see flapjacks be designed as scary!

Next is Barnacles! A whole clump of them, like a cake. They shoot Energy Balls at you. Is this what Barnacles can do if they combine their powers...? The top actually opens up, and it looks a lot like a sea urchin's mouth! So maybe it is some sort of naked urchin creature covered in barnacles? Game Theory!

There are also barnacles with Ice Powers. Like real life!

Let's give it up for Garden Eel!!!!

What a fine Garden Eel it is! Complete with the sort of grumpy face, and with the addition of two little arms that make it look like it's praying or maybe a bit shy. But it is mean! It also spits energy balls at you, then hides in the hole so you can't hit it. How very sneaky!

SO sneaky, in fact, that these eels have mastered the art of ninjutsu! The ninja eel shows up for a split second in one single room, before smoke bombing away. You'd have to use a time freeze power to get him, but I never got around to doing that. I don't have any beef with a ninja eel! I respect him and his training!

Did someone say CTENOPHORE? I hope you did, or my hearing has really gotten worse. This thing is a grade A ctenophore, only with a ring of Scary Teeth! A little scary to think of a ctenophore who could Bite you, but nonetheless this deserves a :ctenopog:!

Let's not forget Fish Vortex! Fish Vortex was the first guy to make me go 'wow, this game's enemies really are awesome!' So of course I had to put him at the top of the post! He is my selling point! I am selling all these enemies to you. For 4.99 a pop!

Anyway. This design is just so funny and cool at the same time. A swirling school of fish that leads into an endless dark abyss, and in the middle, a big eyeball. Also covered in fish. It shoots fish at you! Yay!

There is also a pink variant - it shoots fish that give you the Solitude status effect, which basically just makes Yohane too depressed to summon her friends. Meaning? They are Depression Fish! Maybe she just becomes so jealous of the unity and teamwork of these sardines. She's me like just for real! ^_^

This slug is an umbrella. That is ridiculous! Ridiculously EPIC! It does the opposite of shield you from rain, which is create rain, that kills you. But I would still want one as an umbrella.

When I first saw this thing, I thought it was some strange round Echimoderm I had never heard of. But upon further inspection (I actually asked Mod Chikako shh), it is obviously like a Brittle Star, with each arm folded round to form a wheel! How creative and fun! It even has a bunch of eyes like a starfish!

Last but not least- sushi! There are sushi guys and they are cute. They don't really do much and are typically found in their own rooms, so I'm not sure what the point of them is. But finding a funny walking sushi should be a reward in of itself, I guess! Look at their funny rice feet! Or the one with the roe eyes!

I happened to use fire magic on one of them and this happened. Oopsies...

Now I am sure you are saying, thank you for showing me all these funny enemies. But are there any cool bosses? Of course there are, me! What's a Metroidvania without cool bosses? So I shall show you my favorites without delay!

First is this freak (affectionate)! It is a sort of amalgamation of lots of different animals and I think it just looks plain cool! Two squid mantles combined into one, a bit of a sea angel shape, bug legs and of course a great big eyeball!

If it is not freaky enough for you, let it be known that the bug legs turn into big green skeleton hands, and it also keeps getting pinker, and it grows new eyes and then extra horns grow out of those eyes. If THAT is not freaky enough for you then I am sorry but I cannot do anything about that.

Now, how about a sampling of this Freaken Thang? It honestly doesn't seem that sea-creature themed, but it uses seashells so I guess it counts!

What is really neat is that this boss has two different forms, upside down and rightside up! When it is upside down it looks a bit like a Magolor type creature. And of course, I really like the flame thing in the middle as well, that really feels like a Kirby enemy or something! Like a wisp made of plasma!

Fans of Anomalocaris won't be disappointed by this one! It's a big Anomalocaris tank and boy is it cool! There's something for everyone here, whether you're an Anomalocaris purist or you've always wanted to see it turn into a sort of futuristic beast with a screen mouth that shoots lasers! After covering all these wacky creatures, I'm going to have to end it off with the final boss! What could the big bad, the ultimate boss of all these sea monsters even be, I wonder? Well, it's...

...a coelecanth. Just a big coelacanth! It is big and blue! And really, does it need to be anything else? It is such an honor to make the biggest ultimate boss a coelacanth. It is even pretty cute!! Think he's smiling! 😊

Uh oh! Is it still cute? I guess so. My first thought seeing this was of course the world-renowned tongue eating isopod, so I really hope it was an intentional reference! It probably just wants to shake hands. Still, a pretty simplistic design for our final boss, right?

Buu buu! Its true form actually looks like this! Actually, it's kind of doing too much. Like let's tone it down a little?

So!! We beat the mega ultra coelacanth, and now we can find out what his motivation is! And it is... that he is the memories of the people of the past or something. And they all didn't want to be forgotten, so they turned into fish monsters! But we forgive them!

It doesn't really matter. All the girlies gather around and sing him a song. Look how happy he is! I forgot I was talking about a Love Live game until now, actually. All's well that ends well, the end, et cetera! Hit it, Yohane! [imagine this is like the end of a kids movie where all the Love Live girls are having a dance party and there is a shot of the big coelacanth in jail and he's tapping his mouth fingers along to the beat]

Vlad, Viago and Deacon as parents headcanons

When Viago found a child, freshly turned into a vampire on the side of the road in the Wellington suburbs, he knew he couldn’t just leave it there. So he did the only natural thing and brought you home.

At first, Vladislav and Deacon protested the idea firmly. A child did not belong in their household. But with enough persuasion from their favourite dandy and your puppy-dog eyes, they unenthusiastically gave in.

In the beginning, all three of them were a bit annoyed by you. As a child, you were very nosy and did a lot of things you shouldn’t, like touching their stuff, accidentally or purposely waking them up too early, making messes and all that jazz.

But with time you learned to play by their rules and they learned to accept your premature nature.

Viago is the mom. Nobody cares for you more than him. He treats you like his own descendant and nurtures you constantly.

He makes sure you act properly with all due respect and manners.

He teaches you human anatomy and even a thing or two about hunting, though in the first few months he would just kill a victim and bring it to you.

He’s the one you come to talk to about your feelings and concerns, because you trust him to actually listen and understand.

You remind him of himself, when he was young. He had long forgotten that feeling.

Sometimes he can be a bit overbearing with his care and attempts at upbringing, but you have a very close and loving relationship.

Vladislav was the second person to slowly warm up to you.

He loved your infinite curiosity for everything he did. You soaked in knowledge like a sponge.

He read you all of his poetry (aside from the ones, which are obviously inappropriate for kids) and told you stories of his life and death.

Vlad insisted on you learning through experience, so he constantly took you out hunting. Though he was still nearby, to make sure you don’t accidentally come across any vampire slayers or get outed.

You usually come to him for advice on important matters and it flatters him way more than he likes to admit.

You made him wonder what it would’ve been like to have children of his own.

Then there was Deacon.

Your relationship was very complicated at first.

To put it simply, he ignored your existence or just dismissed it, because he was mad that the decision to let you stay here was made against his will.

He didn’t want you here.

But that all changed when you started rambling about how much you loved his knitting projects and asked him to teach you.

He liked teaching you. Not just knitting, but teaching you anything new in general.

Whatever you ask he will always answer with a smart look, even if he doesn’t know the actual answer.

He found hanging out with you much more fun, than it seemed before.

He’s like the fun parent. The one who lets you do things Viago and Vladislav would never allow.

Like jumping off some very high surface and turning into a bat seconds before hitting the ground just for the thrill of it or drinking liquor blood from people outside “Boogie Wonderland”.

He still has a bit of a protective streak, so Deacon never got you into actual real danger.

That doesn’t mean he wasn’t later scolded by the other two vampires for even making you think doing this stuff was okay.

He’s also a surprisingly good empath and always senses when you’re upset about something.

I imagine he’d do the same talk about immortality with you, that he did with Nick.

They guided you through that phase of realisation, that you will be a child for the rest of your undead existence. They helped you through your worst. Even if they weren’t really sure how to, just the fact that they tried their best was enough.

This lifestyle can be miserable and very depressing. But not with them.

With them it is never boring or dull. Even the usual routine can be brightened up by vibrant stories of the past, hobbies, that they can engage you in or a nice night out on the town.

With time, you actually start feeling, like you have a family once again.

A sincere and loving family of bloodthirsty old men.

This is a bit niche (except in my corner of Tumblr) but I really don't think Faith and Tara would get along at all. It is somewhat baffling to me how common it is to claim that they would.

If they ever met for real post-Who Are You? -- if Faith came back to Sunnydale sooner, say, or Tara survived into Season 7 -- I don't think they'd be friends, I don't think they'd get together, I don't think they'd even spend any time together except as part of a group.

I do agree that Tara wouldn't be fooled by Faith's Cool Loner persona the way Willow and Xander initially are (and that Cordelia and Oz notably aren't). Not because Tara's cool herself, but just because ... well, Tara thinks Willow is cool. Her idea of what is and isn't cool is just completely out of line with the image Faith is projecting. But, okay. Cordelia saw through Faith's cool persona too. That didn't make her and Faith best buddies. It just meant she thought Faith was a phony she didn't like. Why would Tara be any different?

And yes, both Tara and Faith come from abusive backgrounds and have dead mothers. But Tara and Xander both share abusive backgrounds, and I don't think we ever see them bond over that at all. The type of abusive parents they have are just very different. Faith doesn't even talk about her past except in the occasional flippant remark ("my dead mother hit harder than that") which, again, I don't think Tara would be around to hear, because why would they be hanging out in the first place?

And Tara liked her mother. The rest of her family were abusive, sure, but Tara and her mother were close. Her mom had been teaching her magic "since [Tara] was little" and Tara still talks about her fondly as somebody she looks up to (she praises Willow's talent with magic in Hush explicitly by comparing her to her mom). Tara's dead mother (who she liked and who liked her) is something she has in common with Buffy; I don't think it's particularly something she has in common with Faith. If anything I can see Faith kind of resenting Tara for talking about her mother as much as she does (nobody feels sorry for Faith having a dead mom, so why should Tara be any different?).

And yes, Tara is nice and empathetic and I can definitely see her feeling sorry for Faith in a way the other Scoobies aren't. I can see her figuring out Faith's whole thing about Buffy before anyone else, too. But Faith would hate that! She tries to project a cool and untroubled persona precisely because she doesn't want anybody to think she's a loser! They're both kind of on the fringes of the group, but while Tara accepts that (and, indeed, continues thinking of herself as an outsider long past the point she really is one) and waits around anyway while commiserating with Dawn, Faith hates the thought that Buffy and her real friends are off having secret meetings without her and reacts by leaving town for weeks to brood on her own.

I might even grant that actually being friends with Tara would probably be good for Faith. I mean, having literally a single friend in the world (a friend who wasn't the girl she's had a crush on since she was seventeen and whose shared destiny she lives her life in the shadow of, or a friend who wasn't that same girl's vampire ex who she tried to provoke into killing her one time) would do wonders for Faith, almost regardless of who that friend actually was. I just don't particularly see how Faith and Tara could possibly end up as friends, or why it would occur to either of them that that was something they wanted.

Of all the non-core Scoobies Faith might have been friends with, I think Anya is by far the most likely. At least as soon as Anya worked out Faith wasn't at all interested in Xander. Anya wouldn't so much see through Faith's carefully managed persona as she would just not notice it being affected in the first place; while Faith would appreciate Anya's blunt way of speaking and laugh at her stories about handing out demonic punishments to unfaithful men. And in canon Faith's friends with Angel and still can't help thinking fondly of the Mayor; I don't think she'd let the fact Anya used to be a demon bother her in the slightest (her attitude in Selfless would be very different to Buffy's, I know that).

And the way Anya kept on annoying Willow would just be a bonus, as far as Faith was concerned.

your tags about wyll being another disabled person standing up for stelmane... yeah. like all the characters have amazing links to disability like gale's orb, karlach's heart, astarion's hunger all being chronic illnesses essentially, shadowheart dealing with chronic pain, lae'zel i think is the only one without disability coding like that? but wyll being like obviously physically disabled in a different way to everyone else feels important. and the whole thing of overt physical disability being treated completely differently to invisible disability bc there is no way to hide so you're an obvious target (ask me how i know...) so yeah wyll. ugh 💜

I have MANY thoughts about the various disabilities in the game and the way that BG3 is ultimately a Search for a Cure game that dares to suggest “but what if you don’t want the cure? We have a path for that”

But yes to catch others up:

Wyll is physically disabled because he is missing an eye, so he is half blind (though for gameplay purposes we don’t see him with a debuff in accuracy or a lower movement range like we see with completely-blind Zanner Toobin)

Karlach has a chronic heart condition, her heart is a literal machine and it causes her a great deal of pain and discomfort and it will eventually kill her

Gale has the orb, it causes heart-pain/chest-pain-like aches and if left unaddressed will literally disabled him in terms of gameplay because he will slow down and all his attack/defense dice rolls take a hit

Shadowheart has the mark on her hand, which flares up at random and comes with a sharp pain. She also has amnesia, which can be considered a disability

Astarion has vampirism, which, depending on how you read it, is itself a kind of disability (though the tadpole negates a lot of the disabling parts of vampirism for him). I don’t read his hunger as chronic illness mostly because regular hunger isn’t chronic illness and he does find ways to manage his hunger; he is however traumatized and likely has a host of mental illnesses that I won’t diagnose him with, though CPTSD seems like the obvious low hanging fruit

Lae’zel’s only known disability or illness is the tadpole. And she treats it like a disabiltiy or an illness rather than an asset. Unlike others, she’s seeking to cure it, point blank, no negotiations

So the game is full of unexpected and intentional disability representation, even when actual disability isn’t like….actually affecting your gameplay. Sometimes it does, like with Gale, but often it doesn’t mess with your dice rolls or attack range or accuracy. The game just isn’t built for that.

But anyway you point is not about the gameplay. It’s about Wyll.

Wyll I think is interesting because out of the Core Six, he’s the only one comfortable with his disability. I think this is partly because it doesn’t cause him pain. (Pain is after all the Great Complicator in disability discussion.) Even when he turns into a devil, which would do wild things to his psyche, he takes it in stride. This might be bad writing or it might be intentional—physical difference just doesn’t fluster him

But anyway he’s so comfortable in his disability that he jokes with you when you join the “One Eye Club.” He speaks of Stelmane post-stroke as a survivor and a person of value. I imagine he doesn’t have much experience with chronic pain or chronic illness but he’s probably dealt with tons of injuries (look at all his scars) even at his young age. He’s an idealist, but I think he also speaks from experience when he says that Stelmane is “no less worthy of life or success because she is disabled”

I think he thinks the same of his friends. Karlach, Gale, Shadowheart, Astarion, Lae’zel, even if they were able to cure their tadpoles or fix their conditions, he would find them no less valuable and worthy before or after their cures. I don’t think he always understands exactly the chronic pain/illness element but he would never ever say that a person is less worthy of simply living or succeeding or becoming a hero or becoming anything they want to be just because they have a disability or illness

Chalk it up to his idealism but I think that makes Wyll one of the more surprising and uplifting characters in the game, among his other surprising and uplifting characteristics. Like…he’s going to believe in you, no matter what. And he’s going to support you however he can. We see that with Karlach, and how much he would prefer his best friend live with her chronic illness in an environment that will lessen her pain than die. He’d probably give up his magic boots off his feet for Gale. He’d probably agree to fight Shar one on one to try and get her to stop plaguing Shadowheart with pain. He doesn’t want his friends to hurt, but he doesn’t think they’re less valuable or weak for hurting, you know?

Anyway we don’t deserve Wyll Ravengard

Do you think Geta would be more chill if Caracalla got vampirised because he wouldn't have to worry about his brother's illness, or more anxious because now he has to stop his brother from going into direct sunlight?

I went so many places with this ask and then, because I'd thought it through, forgot to actually reply to it.

First? I think Geta would be immensely uncomfortable and feel grief and fear over it. Then, for a very sweet and wonderful moment, it would hit him that this way - Caracalla won't ever leave him. Not because someone assassinates him, not because he dies of his disease, not of old age, nothing. He has his brother forever now and nothing can take him from him.

Except if the assassin's know their lore. What if there's actual vampire hunters out there. What if they manage to infiltrate the palace? Geta won't be able to know what to look out for, he's never dealt with this, he doesn't even know how to kill a vampire himself so how would he know - can it be done? Of course it can be done. There's rumours. But he doesn't know how and the 10 000 tips and tricks aren't exactly reliable. Hang this and that above your door, do weird things to the vampire's sleeping body, fire works, fire doesn't work, nail them to a coffin, Roman emperors aren't buried in coffins - and then. God. Then Caracalla, still fresh to his powers and only barely recovering from his mortal death, catches a single touch of sunlight through a window. Thank the gods the window is barely more than a slit. Thank the gods it's overcast. His hand still burns, a line across his forearm which was exposed when he walked into the light, and it's blistering and red and the skin's already peeling and that's just from a touch that barely registered to either of them.

And Caracalla, frankly, is not going to be smart about it. He's scatterbrained as it is. He always was. Even if the curse would fix everything his illness ever did to him, it won't fix who he is. He'll keep walking into spots of light because he'll forget to be wary of them. He never needed to be wary of anything because Geta would care for him and stay alert for him but light? Even Geta doesn't register it.

At least moonlight does nothing to him, so the first thing they do is become completely nocturnal. And Caracalla barely sleeps anyway now. He does, sometimes, mostly around or after sunrise, but it's like he doesn't really need it for his body but more because... it's a lot to process? How he exists now.

And during daytime, Geta's demanding there's more curtains. Half the palace is just totally blocked from light now. Yeah, I think it'll be worse for him. This, and the fact that Caracalla isn't in the slightest bit interested in keeping his condition a secret. He'll dig his teeth into a slave's neck in the middle of a banquet and answer any stare unblinking that comes his way while the blood's flowing, and Geta increasingly cannot get him to let go but he can't just straight up kill a person by biting them in front of everybody -

and I think, honestly, at some point, he realises that they can't stay. Time to make an elaborate scene; Caracalla gets to kill him, literally kill him, so that one of them is handled. Geta can "disappear" like that, even if he'll be waking up just as sun-sore the next night as Caracalla did before. The issue is convincing his brother to leave the palace, to downgrade from immortal emperor of the world to a rich exile in isolation somewhere out there as far away from people as they can get, because Caracalla is not downgrading, and he is not leaving his home. This should be everybody else's problem, he's still having fun. But Geta isn't, and now he doesn't need to worry about the next 40 years, but the next 400, or 4000. It's never going to end now.

Scrolling through your blog feeds my brainrot so well.. So many references/Easter eggs, especially w/ your arsenic blue + associated tags 😩 Hsr?? Diabolik Lovers?? I've been hit with nostalgia so hard... Imagining Percy and the Percy kids in these respective universe... The power scaling would be such heavy diff 😭 In HSR, Percy would be a whole phenomena, depending on the kids they would be whole ass Aeons!!! The lore would be crazy, especially to the characters in the HSR-verse, the potential encounters there.. Some of the Beel kids especially.. genuine eldritch entities there, cosmic horror on a scale previously unknown to any poor trailblazers that happen across poor Percy's spawn.. Imagine them appearing out of nowhere and just terrorising the whole Hoyoverse with their ineffable presence. Lore accurate (to arsenic blues which is somehow more terrifying than actual ROR canon to me) ROR entities would be horrifying to HSR. Trailblazers would be shook, the Herta Spaxe station would be working overtime to figure out what the fuck these absolute fucking lovcraftian horrors are and where they came from... The Genius Society would be stumped, exhilarated and scared shitless if they had any sense (serves them mfs right, they're sleeping on my man Ratio, crisis deserved). If Percy had any level of interaction with literally any faction in HSR she'd probably be so apologetic.. If she was inclined to let slip that those absolute, universe level threats were actually her children. That she physically gave birth to ☠️ what an exchange to have..

Genshin has been mentioned before, even in the fic itself, so they would be extra fucked if they were doomed with Percys fucked up family trees intervention. So much worse than HSR because Genshin takes place on Teyvat which is a single planet, and from what's available in the lore rn, unless Celestia is secretly goated (not that we'd know because they're so elusive about what the hell Celestia even is) they're extra extra extra fucked with the power scaling. Genshin 'Gods'(/Archons) are NOT comparable to ROR Gods in theeee SLIGHTEST 😭

I watched Diabolik Lovers when I was like twelve, and somewhat recently revisited it and looked deeper than just the anime, so there are more factors to a potential crossover with that universe depending on how much of the lore you've consumed and wether you've seen translations of the games (they have banger character songs for Diabolik Lovers btw, I didn't know they existed at first but they do and they're actually really good. I'd recommend Kill You Again, an Azusa song bc hes my fave, my baby boy, my poor little masochistic meow meow ❤️‍🩹🗡). But I digress - I can see the Percy kids going to that universe for shots and giggles, with how haughty the Sakamaki's/Mukamis behave it would be so satisfying to see them get shat on by their power levels being dwarfed, #justiceforYui. I can imagine some Percy kids would infiltrate their universe and start attending their night school or something just to torment them 💀

The closest thing Diabolik Lovers have to a god (that we know of) is Karlehinz Sakamaki, who's the Vampire King and yada yada, he's very powerful in the lore, because I know I've seen somewhere that, while his kids backstories and abuses are way worse in the actual lore than the anime, they were deliberately engineered to be that way because he kept fucking rewinding time, specifically in Cordelias case (mother of the triplets) until she behaved exactly the way he wanted her to to break their kids so that the only form of love they could ever know was the 'love' they'd inevitably feel for Yui. It wasn't really expanded on in the anime aside from the vague references to 'Eve' and picking an 'Adam', but the whole purpose was to have one of the vamps procreate with Yui to conceive a new species, it was also something to do with some disease call Endzeit I think? That wiped out a whole species of demons (I could be mistaken about those two things being connected, but I know the disease exists in the lore and the demons were wiped out, just no lt sure if the disease is the direct cause)- which is what the vampires actually are, they're just a specific clan of demons, I think related to bats, which is why they resemble vampires.

Karlheinz also has some freaky relatives called Shin and Carla, the werewolf (yes, they are actually vampires, shh) dudes who very briefly showed up in the anime who were never expanded on because there were no more seasons. They were part of the race that was wiped out - First Bloods - and have an obsession with restoring their race or whatever (Carla wants to cure Enzeit as well because, oopsie, it appears he has that exact terminal illness, RIP) so they'd definitely have a particular interest in any Percy kids that happened to pop into their dimension because who better to repopulate with than the exact kind of superior race they're trying to propagate??

the hsr AU got me thinking of the differences between ror gods and the aeons and it's lowkey like the pjo gods and ror (arsenic blues specifically) gods with the whole freedom thing 💔💔 aeons have even LESS freedom than pjo gods 💔 they quite literally have no choice but to follow their paths. nanook must destroy, qlipoth must preserve, lan must hunt, yaoshi must give in abundance, etc. etc. meanwhile our favorite gods represent their domains yes, but they're not TIED DOWN by it. plus, aeons are soooo distant from their people, meanwhile if the percy babies were to get yoinked to that universe, they WILL be direct and up in your face just for shits and giggles 😭😭😭
