TLOU Part 2 Opening scene Part 2

A rant/break down about this flashback scene from the the second game.

Part 1

This is the first look we get at Joel and Ellies living situation in Jackson. It shows us that Ellie is living in a garage that's in Joels backyard.

They managed to find a way to keep Joel and Ellie close but also so far apart. Joel can always keep an eye on her from his house, but she can also keep her distance from him.

There is a time skip between Joel and Tommy's conversation to now. Since then Ellie and Joel have settled into Jackson and become more civilized.

I wish we knew more about the process of Ellie moving into the garage. When did she make the decision to move? Did she immediately call dibs on the garage when they got to Jackson? What was Joels reaction?

The first look we get of Ellie in this game is her by herself drawing and jamming out to music. We also get to see how she has decorated the garage and made it her own. This is the first time Ellie’s really had her own space to live in freely. Back at FEDRA she had to share a room and she probably didn’t own that much.

Ellie is covering up her bite with a bandage so she doesn’t have to wear long sleeves around everyone. I wonder if the chemical burn had already happened at this point? There would only be so long Elie could wear the bandage before people would start to question it.

She is also drawing a deer, which in the last game represented her trauma with the winter/David.

When Ellie finally realizes Joel is in the room she immediately closes her drawing book and stands up. She awkwardly leans against her desk and avoids eye contact for a few seconds.

Her body language is tense and uncomfortable. She doesn't want to see him or talk to him right now.

I love how Joel is being a typical dad here. He goes into her room and awkwardly walks around and touches as much stuff as possible.

Based on this sentence it seems like Joel and Ellie hadn’t spoken in a while, at least a couple days. He's had to subtly check in on her through other people in Jackson. Which foreshadows what he probably had to do when they were estranged for 2 years.

She's obviously pushing him away. She moved into her own place so she was not forced to see him or rely on him anymore.

She’s angry and upset because she knows he’s lying. But she’s also depressed and has an immense amount of survivors guilt.

This is so cute, yet sad. This perfectly mirrors how she tried to bond with him through jokes in the first game. But Ellie immediately shuts him down and is trying to get him to leave. She uses the excuse that she has to be up in a few hours, but if he hadn't of came in there she probably would of stayed up drawing for a while longer.

They've completely switched roles, she's now the closed off one and he's the one trying to bond.

This also furthers the theory that they hadn't talked in a few days or he would of told her the joke sooner. They went from spending every day together for a year to going days apart without speaking.

i wish annabeth held more and was able to express more seething rage bc i feel like it would truly elevate her character and i know she has the capacity for it

like i just want her to break some shit and i want her to be fiercely protective and i want her to physically harm people

the only moment i can really think of her doing that is the scene where she punches percy’s bully but when i went back to read that i realised how much it’s really not looked into by rick

for some reason i had it in my head that it was a big moment where annabeth looked like this actual crazy badass who beat tf outta this kid for bullying percy and tho she does look like a badass bro hit him once told him to fuck off and dipped i wanted her to like BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF HIM

annabeth had followed percy all day watched every instance where percy was bullied and just punched him once and walked away ?? nah my annabeth chase would’ve had percy pulling her off him she does not care that he’s mortal she will actually kill him

I've always been a bit sad growing up when every single monster tends to be defaulted to male (even worse in my very, very gendered mother tongue). So, I've been taking a lot of joy on using or adding female pronouns on entities that do not even have a smidge of gender. Yes, the evil ancient meat supercomputer powered by undead angels is a she/her. The living embodiment of a mechanised city condensed into a vague idea named "The Titan" is genderfluid. I'm tired of only humanoid monsters with hourglass shapes and tits getting to be women. I want role models to look up to (eldritch and mechanical horrors fused in unholy communion)

After everything they've been through, he saw the change in her eyes. He's seen how much she's grown, and how much she worked for become the girl he saw in that right moment.

Let it be said that someone breaking into Arkham Asylum was not something anyone was expecting. And let it be said that if one was to ever try it, they all- guards, residents, and doctors alike- would think they would be breaking in to break someone out. 

They are not in fact, expecting a child to be running through the halls giggling with everyone failing in catching him. Someone catch the child before he gets hurt or somehow makes it to the isolation ward! The joker is in there!

Danny is honestly having fun. Ms. Arkham- Gotham’s own Gatekeeper and daughter- is really fun! Sure he’d rather she not view the people within her walls as dolls and playthings, but he supposes she’s not exactly harming anyone. And honestly she could hold on tighter to a few of them to prevent them from escaping in his opinion. 

But he’s here to spend time with his new ghostly Aunt, not judge her, so he’s going to get the whole tour! Secret tunnels you say? Oh, a graveyard, inside your walls? That’s amazing! Isolation ward? Ah, where the naughty dolls go, makes sense! 

Well of course he wants to see it, lead the way!

To be honest my biggest "my WoL would not do that" in the whole game is when I, playing a WoL called Bounding Frog who named herself from her lifelong love of studying frogs, was called out for acting like a bad frog by Erenville, a man apparently her equal in Frog Knowledge. I have to believe that Alphi-toad and Ali-toad were so bad at being toads that even though Frog was doing her best to be realistic and guide them, it was hopeless and their poor acting was what betrayed them to the frog guy.

I've seen a lot of discourse about Virginia Kull's portrayal of Sally Jackson in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV series, and I'd like to say that I loved her. Don't get me wrong. I love Sally from the original book series, and I, too, would fight the God of War on her behalf. But something that I enjoyed about Virginia's portrayal of Sally that we don't get in the books is the character depth. We don't hear much of Sally's backstory in the TV series, apart from a couple of flashbacks with younger Percy and that scene with Poseidon (Toby Stephens). However, those scenes do an excellent job of showing us that alongside being Percy's mother, Sally is also a young woman who fell in love with a man she could not be with and is enduring the natural consequences of having Percy. She struggles to communicate with him when she's frustrated, gets teary-eyed when she lies to him to prolong the inevitable, and actively sacrifices her happiness to ensure his safety. Virginia Kull's portrayal of Sally Jackson reinforces the character's humanity, imperfections, and determination, and it's everything to me.

I just need every single person in this fandom who has ever been mean about Luke Newton to know that Nicola Coughlan hates you. Genuinely and wholeheartedly.

She hates you. Sure, she won't say it aloud, because she's a professional who knows her career lives or dies by fans, but please know that she does. She hates you if you've said Colin gave you the ick, especially so if you said it to Luke, she hates you if you've left a rude comment on his social media, she hates you if you acted like she didn't like him or that she was shading him, she hates you if you bullied the people around him, she hates you if you said something disparaging about how he looks or how he acts, she. hates. you.

And sure, it's not all people who are in her or Pen's fanbase, in fact a lot of people have been cruel about him outside of the Polin fandom, but a LOT of people are Pen fans, and hearing her talking about how defensive she gets over him when people say something rude about him? And knowing there are SO many stupid opinion blogs and youtubers and tiktokers who say they're Pen fans and Nicola fans but are mean as fuck about Luke?

I need every single one of them, in particular those who have been out here making up stupid shit to be mad at him about 'on her behalf' to know that when you say something mean about the man she gushed to her Mum about, and who her Mum was so excited to meet because she just knew he was kind, the man she introduced to her entire family, the man she is always reaching for and hugging and snuggling up to and calling wonderful and giggling around and saying how she wouldn't want to do such vulnerable intimate scenes without and complimenting and leaning on and having fun with and calling a special person in her life, she is taking off her earrings and ready to meet you outside in his honor

because she hates you for being a dick about him. hope that clears things up

Thankfully I don't see this too often but often enough that I'm mad about it.

She absolutely adores her "strange man". She would know damn well that he would never give up trying to come home.

And she would never feel like he betrayed her because of what he went through. She's not stupid or cruel. She would never blame him for being raped or call him a cheater for it.

Like, that's not Penelope.

It's possible that Odysseus felt like HE betrayed her with all the trauma. But she would reassure and adore him as she always has.

Maybe other people would assume so and gossip but she knows her Joy.

Yeah, we technically don't know the aftermath of the Odyssey by Homer but based on their love and affection after he told her everything, she would not "think he's a whore".

If anything she would weep WITH him, sorrowed by the suffering he has gone through. Smooth his hair and kiss his tear-stained cheeks. Reassure him.
