Thinking about Sally Jackson getting in a healthy relationship after years of abuse. Thinking about how confused she must've been when she broke a plate and Paul helped clean it up without so much as a glare. Thinking about the way she was probably afraid to date, knowing how much of a risk it is, only for Paul to treat her like a queen and make her feel safe. Thinking about Sally mentioning something Gabe did that she never thought much of, only to see Paul's horrified expression and realise that isn't normal. Thinking about Sally looking at Paul and smiling as she remembers that this is what love is supposed to feel like.

I've seen a lot of discourse about Virginia Kull's portrayal of Sally Jackson in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV series, and I'd like to say that I loved her. Don't get me wrong. I love Sally from the original book series, and I, too, would fight the God of War on her behalf. But something that I enjoyed about Virginia's portrayal of Sally that we don't get in the books is the character depth. We don't hear much of Sally's backstory in the TV series, apart from a couple of flashbacks with younger Percy and that scene with Poseidon (Toby Stephens). However, those scenes do an excellent job of showing us that alongside being Percy's mother, Sally is also a young woman who fell in love with a man she could not be with and is enduring the natural consequences of having Percy. She struggles to communicate with him when she's frustrated, gets teary-eyed when she lies to him to prolong the inevitable, and actively sacrifices her happiness to ensure his safety. Virginia Kull's portrayal of Sally Jackson reinforces the character's humanity, imperfections, and determination, and it's everything to me.

Percy genuinely believed that Sally was trying to get rid of him by sending him to all those schools. He was so hurt when she instantly said no to homeschooling, cause all he ever wanted was to be with her.
But in the flashback we see why that hurts Sally so much. Because all of this, all the schools, and the shitty step-dad, and the stories, and the lying when necessary, and the yelling and the crying and the stress, all of this was SO SHE COULD KEEP HIM.
Because baby Percy has no idea that there is a place, a perfect place, with people just like him, with people who would help and understand him. A place where baby annabeth may have only just arrived.
Sally could have taken him to camp instantly. Even as a baby. She was only 19!!! She could've taken him to camp in that flashback, when he was like 9, she could've lived her 30s as a single young woman starting her candy business. But she put herself through so much, and Percy through so much, because she knew that there is no place more perfect than home.
And she did what it took to keep her baby home and safe, with his mom.

I’ve seen someone say that Sally was selfish and inconsiderate for telling Percy they need his room for Estelle???

my favourite thing about sally jackson is how she's stayed such a romantic her whole life despite what she's gone through and nobody talks about it. she sacrificed her years of school so that she could take care of her dying uncle. she was deserted by poseidon after having his kid. she sacrificed the next few decade or so of her life taking care of percy and was repeatedly abused and put down by gabe, all while struggling to become educated, even though gabe disapproved of it. majority of her life was wasted away for the sake of other men. but she put in the work, went to college and became an author who writes romance books. she supports and roots for percy and annabeth's love and is not strict on them at all. she started a new family. she reclaimed the part of her that was a dreamer and was young to pursue her dreams, even at an age where moms are usually expected to retire.

this post goes out to sally fucking jackson
the woman who stayed in an abusive relationship for years to keep her son safe.
the woman who survived a minotaur attack and the underworld.
the woman who ate a primarily blue diet out of pure spite.
the woman who turned her abusive husband into a statue and sold him for a fortune.
the woman who was offered, by poseidon, a palace under the sea if she wished.
the woman who picked up a shotgun from a police car, used it against a laistrygonian giant, and when asked when she learned how to use it, responded “just now”.
a woman who, without notice, was met by a newly-human god and his twelve year old master and, without batting an eye, offered them food and clothing.
a woman who is a mother above all mothers.
i love sally jackson.

Grover is the satyr equivalent of 12-14 in the first book. He is a child.
When he was tasked with bringing Thalia to camp and failed he would have been at most 9 years old. He was traumatized by her death, and he no doubt blamed himself for it.
He was shamed by the cloven council at (max) 9 years of age for a death he would not have been strong or skilled enough to prevent. He knows the counsel would have preferred that he died trying to save her which likely would have ended up in his and Thalia's deaths. He sometimes wonders if he would have preferred that as well.
When he is trying to get Percy to camp safely Percy hears him muttering "sixth grade- they never make it past sixth grade!" A reference to Thalia and his first mission. Grover is knocked unconscious due to the minotaur but thankfully Percy is able to get to camp without dying. However, he loses his mom in the process. Another death Grover has on his conscience before she comes back.
Thalia, against all odds comes back as well and he's able to feel some kind of relief. He gets to see her alive again and can almost not feel guilty anymore. He starts to calm down, able to ease his own anxiety with the help of Percy and Annabeth. He works on no longer feeling like a failure.
Then he finds the Di Angelo's. The third and fourth big three kids Grover has stumbled across. He tries to hide his anxiety as he gets the two very young kids to camp, focusing on his task because he would not fail again.
They arrive safely to camp unfortunately at the cost of Annabeth being taken. He doesn't know what to feel. It seems his loved ones safety always comes with a sacrifice.
He's the first to volunteer for the quest for her after Thalia. He knows Percy wants to go as well and will not be happy that he can't but a part of Grover wants Percy to stay at camp. Stay where it's safe as selfish as that may be.
Of course his hopes of Percy staying put were unrealistic and he knew that. Percy was far too loyal to rest while someone he loves is in danger. He could sense Percy's anger and restlessness as soon as they left and he knew his best friend would catch up to them very soon.
Grover is now on a quest with three kids he found. Three kids he was tasked with protecting. Three kids from a group of five where two are fated to die.
Bianca is lost and Grover knows that unlike the last two, there is no hope for her return. Even then he digs through the rubble desperately, not stopping until Thalia pulls him away.
They are able to rescue Annabeth and return her to safety. But as always, the safety of his loved ones came with a cost. A sacrifice someone else had to make.

Y'all think tv show Sally isn't an abuse victim cause she doesn't act like a damsel in distress. After like 8(ish) months of abuse I was sick of it and started talking back to my partner. Sally was with Gabe for YEARS. Of course she'd get sick of putting on the "sweet and obedient" act. I got sick of it REALLY fast and I'm a pushover so of course Sally "takes no shit" Jackson is gonna get sick of it too.
The fandom just can't comprehend the fact that abuse victims aren't always the personification of a kicked puppy. Once being afraid of your partner is your default state, you stop caring.
Basically, tv show Sally is just as much of an abuse victim as book Sally. Just because Gabe never tried to hit her on screen (reminder that this is meant to be a KID'S SHOW and kids are more vulnerable to that type of shit now than they were in the book days, and some things were probably cut but probably happened off screen) and just because she didn't take his shit doesn't mean she wasn't abused.
Thank you for coming to my Sally Jackson appreciation post <3

maybe i didn't say it loud enough before. but sally grew up relying on and taking care of people who were always going to leave her. and eventually became the only survivor of her family. then she had percy and did everything in her power to be a permanent figure in his life. only to essentially die and doom her son to the same fate of being the only survivor of his family. just wanted to repeat that for those who are in the back.

friendly reminder that normal is a myth. everyone has issues they're dealing with. and there's a place you need to go, where you belong. where the things that make you different, are the things that make you special. special like your father, yes percy you are special. like food the colour blue, all the things that make you you, are the things that will make you strong. so be strong 🫶🫶

Percy thinking he’s already failed the quest because the deadline passed and so he’s not worried about that line in the prophecy anymore, and the show doesn’t even give him a moment to question it because Poseidon was actually a good father and ex and gave him four pearls to save Sally.
When that fourth pearl gets lost, it’s going to be so awful for our boy.

anyone else obsessed with how gently Percy holds Medusa’s head? how he cradled it close to his chest and refused to hold it aloft like his namesake?
