I realised something about Percy's stepfather's.....

This is Gabe's reaction to Percy even getting in his car even before he is officially a demigod and then we have Paul...

Paul not only willingly allowed Percy to borrow his car, he did so knowing that Percy is a demigod and is likely to get himself into scraps due to ahh past experiences. This just goes to show how amazing of a person he is, Sally's amazing husband and Percy's perfect father. Honestly Paul is such an underrated character... Also using cars to contrast both the stepfather's behavior is genius

We should have dove into Gabe and Percy's relationship a bit more.

I wish we got more closure than he got turned to stone. The fact that he would beat Percy up and then tell him not tell his mom because it's a "guy secret" is horrendous.

I wonder if Sally knew - I wonder if she pretended not to know. I wonder if Gabe threatened to hit Sally if Percy told her. they say Tartarus smells like your worst fear and Percy said it smelt like Gabe that has to mean something...

That is one thing that I was sad about in the show. I wish we could have had commentary on how this is not okay.

it's so interesting to me that of Jason, Percy, and Nico, people usually characterize Nico as the only one chill with murder when literally the first book of the whole PJO universe, Percy offers to kill Smelly Gabe for his mom. later he finds out his mom killed Smelly Gabe and starts like. cheering.

like obviously Smelly Gabe deserved it but that kid is chill with murder from day ONE. FOUNDATION OF HIS CHARACTER RIGHT THERE

the changes to Gabe turning to stone was such a good choice because it changed from an intentional thing on Percy & Sally's part to the consequences of Gabe's actions for not respecting Percy & Sally's boundaries and I think that suits this portrayal of Gabe much better

Percy genuinely believed that Sally was trying to get rid of him by sending him to all those schools. He was so hurt when she instantly said no to homeschooling, cause all he ever wanted was to be with her.

But in the flashback we see why that hurts Sally so much. Because all of this, all the schools, and the shitty step-dad, and the stories, and the lying when necessary, and the yelling and the crying and the stress, all of this was SO SHE COULD KEEP HIM.

Because baby Percy has no idea that there is a place, a perfect place, with people just like him, with people who would help and understand him. A place where baby annabeth may have only just arrived.

Sally could have taken him to camp instantly. Even as a baby. She was only 19!!! She could've taken him to camp in that flashback, when he was like 9, she could've lived her 30s as a single young woman starting her candy business. But she put herself through so much, and Percy through so much, because she knew that there is no place more perfect than home.

And she did what it took to keep her baby home and safe, with his mom.

Annabeth v Gabe

You know..........you all keep saying that Gabe abused Percy, so he'd see the signs of Annabeth abusing him and would stand up to her.

But.........you're forgetting the difference between Gabe and Annabeth.

Gabe is a smelly, disgusting, fury-provoking guy who's pretty ugly and who's generally terrible. He was a terrible stepfather and was absolutely horrible to Sally and Percy.

Annabeth.......is not Gabe. She might be abusive like him, but she's a young girl same age as Percy, and she's been one of Percy's friends for his whole demigod life. Gabe was downright horrible-you could clearly see that. But Annabeth is kind of disguised in her abuse-that is, she's nice one moment and nasty the next.

And yeah, maybe Percy saw it, but the thing is, Annabeth was at Camp Half Blood for years. She's very senior and superior, and most of the camp would choose her over Percy and ignore her abuse of him (Chiron and Dionysus fall under this category too).

Also, we have to remember the PJO takes place in the early 2000s and Annabeth was a girl. Female violence against men was largely dismissed and men who actually, genuinely complained about it were laughed at and made fun of. And Annabeth could get all teary and manipulative, and she was a pretty young girl, so she could get away with a lot of abuse that Gabe could not.

Percy never saw her as a threat, not like he did with Gabe. She was always a friend he had to sacrifice for and please.

Now, I'm not saying that Annabeth is as bad as Gabe, but I'm saying that she can also be manipulative and abusive, and this is bad, even if it is unintentional. I don't hate Annabeth, but I wish that Riordan had written her properly.

TLDR-Annabeth Chase is a pretty young girl who is one of Percy's demigod friends, can be secretly abusive (sometimes unintentional, but still as bad) and has a lion's share in his perception of the mythological world, which Percy loves a lot.

Gabe is a nasty, smelly, disgusting and openly abusive old man whom Percy was literally happy to MURDER (technically Sally murdered him, but she got the head because of Percy, who gave her the idea and encouraged her to do it. Not that I'm saying that either of them are bad because of it).

You can clearly see why Percy wouldn't see how Annabeth could abuse him because she could get away with much that Gabe could not.

The last thing I saw as the door swung closed was my mother staring at Gabe, as if she were contemplating how he would look as a garden statue.

Sally, you amazing woman, at least bring him outside. I don't think you want him stuck inside your house and dragging a stone statue outside is too difficult.

This comment by Percy made me think of something. Maybe Tartarus smelt like your worst fears, your most traumatic memories and maybe that's why Percy thought it smelled like Smelly Gabe.
