I cannot go on any longer so...

I translated the Bengali locklyle song I posted about earlier. Yep. The whole thing.

This took a ton of time and effort to do, but I really would love for other fans of the series to be able to listen to the song linked above and understand the lyrics to some extent.

A few important things:

I am not a professional at translation by any means and my skills only go so far as knowing both languages and having a good vocabulary.

Bengali/Bangla does not use gendered pronouns. This song extensively uses singular third person pronouns that are technically gender-neutral, but keeping in mind the context and intent of the song, I shall be translating them as she/her.

I will translate each line in a way that preserves the meaning of the line and captures its essence to the best of my abilities. This translation will be in bold

4. I cannot preserve rhyme schemes of the original. If a line can be meaningfully translated in a couple different ways, I'll add both with a / between them to give y'all the best chance at the original meaning.

5. The original bangla lines will be italicized.

6. Any additional notes will be added in brackets ( ) beside the lines.

The bengali word "agle" in this line implies possessiveness - the kind, where you hold something close in reverence and love, in fear that it might be painfully transient)

But I lose her once again to a hundred little things (Note: the OG line does not have the word "hundred" but I feel this is the best I can do to convey the idea. Saying "lose her to the little things" or "lose her at the slightest" felt wrong)

Take chhobo chhobo bhabchi

I reach out to touch her (Note: The word "touch" metaphorically indicates closeness. This line has an undertone of hesitation, or a tentative quality)

Ar chhuyei palachhchhi

But the moment I do, I retreat / withdraw

Pher takei chute jachhchhi abar...

But I still reach out to her again...

Obhimaan pichhu nao

Obhimaan, take after her / follow in her wake, (Note: Let me explain what 'Obhimaan' is. It doesn't have any direct corresponding English word, but I'll try my best. It's the feeling of hurt. The wound in your heart that you hold against the person who caused it. It's blame mixed with love mixed with latent desperation to reconcile but being unable to because of the rift of both of your withdrawals which was in turn caused by the incident that hurt you. Not a perfect explanation but it'll do. So this line is directly speaking to this feeling. THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS THE HINDI WORD 'ABHIMAAN')

Take pichhu ferao

Please make her turn back / please implore her to turn back

Tar kane na jay pichhu dak amar

My pleas for her return fall on deaf ears / she does not heed my pleas for her return

Mukh bujei take dakchhi abar

So I remain, calling out to her silently and wordlessly

The emptiness of my heart finally knows contentment (Note: the word "buk" literally translates to "chest". I have used "heart")

Listen to what I say, o downcast soul, (Note: the word for "downcast" literally translates to "wet" or "damp")

Raat bhor jagte nei

For I see no point in staying up 'til dawn

Let my whispered words be what lulls her to sleep... (Note: "Mukh chora daak" literally means "secret words/call" and usually has a bashful undertone. This line is like disgustingly sweet)

Take chhuye shwapno bunchi abar

As I weave dreams around her once again (Note: The line literally translates to "I weave dream once again while touching her" but it sounds weird like that. Once again, take "touch" metaphorically. It's a reverence for the tactile. It's a very beautiful sentiment about marveling at the tangible closeness between the two people and daring to hope for a future)

Take aalto gaaye maakhchhi

I wrap myself in her essence (Note: I simply can't convey how goddamn intimate this line is via a translation)

Aar aalto muthoi dhakchhi

And enclose her gently in my fists, in the hollow of my clasped hands

Tobu mutho agle rakhchhi abar

And despite it all, I keep my grip loose. (Note: Holding someone so gingerly that you encircle them, but don't trap them. Loving someone enough to be prepared to lose them. Trust me it sounds less clunky in the OG form)

saw an elderly woman walking around with a tote bag whose design were the four AO3 fic category squares and she very excitedly asked if i was a reader or a writer bcs nobody else at the con had recognized it, and after telling her that i've been writing fic since fanfic.net, she solemnly nodded and explained that she'd been reading fic since "the days of personal websites" but that she only started writing fanfic when she was 47 and oh my god when i tell you that i genuinely teared up on the spot!!!!! like!!! HELL YEAH???? LITERALLY NEVER TOO OLD TO START WRITING. NEVER TOO OLD TO WRITE AND SHARE YOUR FIC.

her enthusiastic "i'm a very nice and bubbly person, i swear! but i love writing angst and major character death :)" nearly took me the fuck out.

I've seen a lot of hate for the previews of wottg with people saying that rick has just written this book for money, and the characters aren't accurate.

That he's just gone on a crazy tangent and isn't doing anymore fan service.

Especially hate towards annabeth for wanting to throw a party and to grover.

What's your take?

Love this ask soo much!! Thank you anon because now I have a reason to rant on the thoughts in my head and I promise you I didn't think I would write this much...

Percy's mental condition as shown in the first chapter is pretty well displayed in my opinion. My boy is fed up, requires therapy, a break and blue food but he has to face WEEKEND CLASSES (I have them and I can tell you that they are the absolutely worst way to torture your sanity). I'll give Rick points for this though. The entire episode with Hecate was also written well and IT DID NOT FEEL LIKE FANSERVICE TO ME ATLEAST. Percy feels like himself at least from the preview I can say.

HOWEVER I have my own set of issues too. Now I will tell you that I am a kind of person who refrains from the negatives of any situation before seeing the whole story BUT sometimes I have opinions which I will express now. To start off, I do not like they way Rick just made Grover and his hooves not appear because of the mist concept. This was actually a deal in tlt and have it just discarded away in one line in the book put me off a little. I love continuity in books and small errors are like pricking needles for me.

Now we come to the most controversial moment of them all: CHAPTER 3!!! See I love Annabeth having friends (happier because it fulfills my Annabeth being a social butterfly head canon). I love Hana loathing Percy (she definitely has a crush on Annabeth, fight me). But I have an issue with the way Percy sees himself when he is in the midst of her friends. He makes himself inferior and an idiot when he absolutely isn't and I have an issue with that because it isn't good!

Annabeth proposing to have a party is slightly out of character in MY OPINION but okay I can accept it and see how Rick wants to proceed with this so neutral on that till now. HOWEVER I hope he makes Annabeth and Percy have a fight on this because Percy has to let out his problems and their relationship needs to have some angst from time to time (also in my opinion).

Overall, I am extremely excited and hoping to read the book as soon as it arrives (curse you Amazon). I believe that you can't hate the book on the basis of the preview but there are few... unsettling things which can be set right if handled well later in the book. I do think sometimes Rick does not effectively utilise the potential but I'll read the book nevertheless. It's the very reason I look forward to live through my exams. So yeah I have no strong opinions and would most probably drop in a detailed analysis after I actually read the book.
