Imagine hiccstrid ACTUALLY having an enemies to lovers relationship.

I know a lot of people say they do, but I only see that through Astrid’s pov. Hiccup never really saw Astrid as an enemy throughout the franchise.

I mean if someone asked how they met, I’m pretty sure they BOTH wouldn’t say “oh yeah, we hated each other.” Astrid would probably say that because she envied him at first, but then realized how he made a big change in her life.

To me, or at least in my opinion, if hiccstrid had that “enemies to lovers” story, I’d think they would have the kind of relationship similar to:

Astrid and Snotlout: starting a fight just for the sake of starting a fight, desperately trying to prove the other person wrong, always waiting for them to make a mistake, one of them flirts with the other and the other pretends like they don’t like it, but they know they do, always yelling shut up at each other, and then they end up dating.

Ruffnut and Tuffnut: (don’t think of hiccstrid being actual siblings) constantly bullying each other, fighting, making fun of them, having inside jokes that nobody else gets but the two of them, then they end up dating.

Dagur and Mala: Those type of friends that have a toxic relationship, but is also there for you so you can’t complain, has five arguments per day, and both go separate ways, but then the other person will come back and say “ you hungry?” Don’t be fooled, once they get closer and closer, they gatekeep and show protectiveness, then end up dating. (They aren’t scared to show PDA either).

Viggo and Hiccup: When one of them says something for dramatic effect, (hiccup) the other is like, um, okay… (astrid). Being friends, astrid is the extrovert and hiccup is the introvert so she’s always trying to get him to go somewhere with her, one usually cracks jokes to the other but the other genuinely won’t get it cause their sense of humor is absolutely horrible, sometimes both will test each other’s intelligence and have random ass trivia questions in the back of their mind, then, ha, you guessed it, they end up dating.

What I’m saying is, I think hiccup and astrid fall under the-

“The girl who is suffers from being judgmental her whole life so much that it makes her want to hide her true feelings, so she secretly crushes on him.”

and

“The boy who lacks confidence and social skills so much that he doesn’t pay attention to what she actually thinks about him, so he’ll just stay in the shade until the sun is gone.”

to lovers kind of relationship, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. ;)👍

A second ‘Httyd/the deep rivalries’ post, as a sequel to the post i did of all the rivalries that will appear in my fic of characters from httyd and The Deep that wouldn’t interact otherwise (Ala Snotlout/Alpheus, Kaiko/Viggo, Astrid/Fontaine, etc.). Only this one’s a little different, as only one of these counts as an actual rivalry, while the other two are a little more ‘these are dynamics that are going to be REALLY fun to write’. Anywaaayyys

Ingrid and Astrid are more of a one-sided rivalry. Ingrid is one of the older girls in the village, about nineteen years old. She was top of her Dragon Training class, being the student who participated in the final test, and she had one of the fastest records to date. Ingrid is popular, if not always well-liked, and she’s really good at fighting and dragon-killing. Astrid doesn’t care about how popular Ingrid is, or about how pretty she is and how many boys faun after her, but another thing about Ingrid is that she is REALLY good at getting under someone else’s skin. And Ingrid REALLY likes getting under Astrid’s skin. Astrid prides herself on her resolve to be the best warrior she can be for her tribe, and her skill as a warrior, and Ingrid loves to make all of Astrid’s feats out as something unimpressive or subpar. She loves to suggest ways Astrid can improve in a way that makes it clear she’s saying Astrid isn’t near as good as she thinks she is, she loves to show off by doing whatever move Astrid is practicing and doing it better and acting nonchalant about it, and she ESPECIALLY loves to comment on Astrid’s skill with her ax. Obviously, this is something that drives Astrid nuts. Ingrid is hard to get back at though, so Astrid is just stuck seething and working as hard as she can to prove she’s better than Ingrid, who time and time again just brushes off Astrid’s efforts like they’re nothing more than childish feats

Fontaine and the older Riders is going to be a really fun dynamic for me to explore writing, mostly because of when they all finally meet up. I don’t want to say too much, because i want to leave it to the story, but what I will say is that it’s not really a rivalry like the others. On Fontaine’s side of it, she’s found out that her dead baby brother that she didn’t even know she had until a few years prior isn’t actually dead, and not only is he not dead, but he’s surrounded himself with his own little makeshift family in the absence of his biological family. And that family is largely composed of a lot of kids all her own age. This produces a lot of feelings such as jealousy, frustration, and self-doubt. The older Riders don’t know what to think of Fontaine at first, the idea of meeting Ant’s biological family a notion that they knew could possibly happen. But the actual presence of Ant’s older, biological sister, interacting with them and trying to get to know Ant, is one that’s making them realize that Ant’s biological family may want him back. And by this point in time, the Riders have long since settled on Dragon’s Edge. Most of this is coming from Fontaine, but both sides have a lot of complicated feelings to work through that I for one cannot WAIT to get to writing.

Mala and Eret is the least rivalry-esque of this batch, but it’s a dynamic that has been fun to figure out and write in segments as the characters watch the movie. Mala is the Queen of the Defenders of the Wing, a tribe dedicated to protecting dragons. Eret is the son of a dragon trapper who is the son of yet another dragon trapper, who have both had run-ins and minor dealings with Viggo Grimborn, who has been personally attacking Mala’s Caldera to try and get to the plethora of dragons they keep there beyond their Eruptodon. Naturally, there’s a little bit of contention between these two at the start, mostly from Mala who’s having a hard time grasping the idea that not all dragon trappers were in the business because they wanted to, and that some of them might want to get out. Eret is trying really hard to get Mala to at the very least tolerate his presence, especially when he is introduced to the young queen through the Dragon Riders. There’s gonna be a lot of fun bickering between these two, who are relatively around the same age, and trying to keep the peace in the presence of the young, impressionable riders.

Dagur and Eret are also going to be fun, because Dagur being Dagur is like ‘oh who’s this? Who’s this big brother shaped person with a dragon as well?? WHO’S THIS-‘ and Eret’s just trying to get along with the kids other friend. It’s like when you have two different friends from two different friend groups, and are trying to introduce them to each other. The Riders are in for a lot of PR control between the various groups they pick up as friends along the way as the story progresses

Misc: She likes to help her father in the forge (I headcanon that Tuff begins to help Gobber in the forge now that Hiccup is to busy as chief) or helping her mother cook and bake in the great hall.

...With Children

(RTTE spoilers) Here are my headcanons for Dagur and Mala as parents because you know they're having a minimum of 2 kids assuming everything is okay health wise. They just seem very...romantic as a couple.

I think they'd be great parents! Even though they don't always agree on the best rearing techniques (Mala thinks balancing on stones near lava is good and Dagur wants them to spend more time throwing knives), they stay a united front with the kiddos around. Then, they can disagree afterwards so that the kids aren't receiving mixed messages. They're a team in raising the little ones just like they're a team with leading their kingdoms.

In the same vein, I don't think they fit into the "one is a fun parent. One is a tough parent" stereotype. If the kids mess up stuff around the hut, they know Momma Mala's not going to be happy with them. If they do something insanely reckless that puts them in danger, they know Daddy Dagur's going to be livid. (Also, I just realized that they can have alliteration with their names and I love them as parents even more because of that.)

I think that in the lighter times when one parent disagrees, whichever one it is can win over the other. If Mala and the kids want to go out to find new dragons to heal, Dagur isn't going to be able to say no to them. Similarly, Mala will see their matching 🥺s and give in on whatever idea they want to try out.

Overall, I see them as a really happy family that distributes the work of leadership and parenthood pretty evenly.

All right, I finished this much faster than I was actually expecting, but Mala’s outfit is literally only two colors so that probably helped. Anyways, here’s the next two redesigns/re-plots!

Queen Mala of the Defenders of Caldera Cay has only just been made Queen. She’s had plenty of training, and plenty of unofficial experience due to shadowing her late mother on many political trips and errands around their village. She can handle herself. She knows everything she needs to do and she’s been doing wonderful so far. Her people think so, at least. But Mala is filled with inner self-doubt. Her armor has not yet seen battle, and while peace is wonderful, and only means good things, Mala is worried it makes her seem incompetent. She’s the youngest Monarch Caldera Cay has seen yet, and she knows that there are some Caldera’s who believe she’s not ready for the mantle. She’s desperate to keep her people and their Great Protector, the Eruptodon, safe, especially with the looming threat of Dragon Trappers led by their leaders, the Grimborn Brothers, on the horizon. Mala is set on tradition, but at an age where she starts to question things. She has not had five years of certainty under her battle-seen belt, and is a little more open to persuasion from people with similar views on dragons under the right circumstances.

Chicken is a Berkian Bantam, a hardy breed of Archipelagon chicken usually found on, well, Berk. Berkian Bantams are known for being good egg-layers, hardy animals, and surprisingly long-lived compared to other breeds of chicken. They’re usually kept for, well, egg laying as opposed to meat-eating birds, or household pets for families with young children. This particular hen was taken in a raid some four years back, and managed to escape the dragon that had taken her, presumable by incessantly pecking and clawing at whatever appendage was holding her. She has lived on Dragon Island for the last four years, living off of small rodents and insects, whatever foliage manages to grow, and sheer spite. Chicken has also, somehow, against literally ALL odds, evaded being caught by any one of the dragons on the dragon filled island, all of whom go out to bring food back for the Red Death on a daily basis. No one’s really sure how. After being adopted as a pet by Tuffnut, Chicken now lives her life traveling with the riders, and trying to establish a pecking order with the dragons. Her attempts have yet to see results, as the riders dragons don’t really care, but the dragons definitely aren’t trying to eat her for dinner any time soon.

Neither of these feisty, independent ladies designs changed too much. Chicken is a chicken. The only real difference with Mala’s is that her hair is a little longer, as she’s younger here than she is in RTTE. Mala is a little more open-minded with the riders from the get-go in comparison to RTTE, mostly because they’re all so much younger. Mala hasn’t spent too much time being Queen Defender, and the riders are all either teenagers or barely starting puberty. They’re kids. This affects a deal number of things in the overall story.
