912: Diana Zimmerman - The Enchantress
Diana Zimmerman is an enchanting woman in every sense of the word: personality, charm, abilities, looks, intelligence, skill, and so much more. She has led a life of magic like few other women. And she is being recognized for her achievements by being inducted to the Los Angeles Times Global Magicians Hall of Fame on July 9th, 2025. Married at 19 to Dick Zimmerman, magician and creative genius, she performed around the world on television and stage with her one-woman performance. She traveled with a giant gramophone then later switched to a thumb tie and pick pocketing. She developed and still works with the Magic Castle Junior Program (which just celebrated their 50th year) and is the author of several books of fantasy. But she also authored the definitive collector’s edition of the Siegfried and Roy book.

Diana has so many stories that she shares with us this week including her early days working with her then-husband, Dick Zimmerman, then how Cary Grant encouraged her to form the junior program at the Magic Castle, and many stories about the late Siegfried and Roy. She was a close confidant to the illusionists and shares some “behind the scenes” stories from Little Bavaria to “the Incident” that ended their Las Vegas run.

Introduction to Environmental Ethics
I saw a post that reminded me how much I hate corn and the current agricultural industry. So in a caffeinated fugue state I found my old environmental ethics syllabus and collected links to the PDFs of as many articles I could find. Some topics include introduction to general ethics and philosophy, ethics in ecology, food and agriculture ethics, and predictions of viral outbreaks (I took this class during the 2020 spring semester and to say it was topical is an understatement).
These articles are meant to give a name and face to a lot of environmental concepts plus an overview of the historical and current landscape of this field. You do not have to agree with all ideas presented in these articles, and in fact most concepts have plenty of counter articles.
I did my best to only include links that show the PDF without needing to download anything, because I'm paranoid of random files automatically downloading and I don't want to inflict that on anyone else. I still include anything I couldn't find open access to since I don't want to leave anything out and other people might have better luck.
Readings and Resources
The Elements of Moral Philosophy by James Rachels

I've just read "The Darwin incident" and it's one of those rare manga that's so bad that's it's good.
The premise is that there's a teenaged human chimpanzee hybrid named Charlie with human level intelligence, which is a pretty bonkers premise from the get go.
The main antagonists are vegan terrorists who like... bomb restaurants? Because of those terror attacks people start to discriminate against vegans, including Charlie.
Charlie also had super powers for some reason, he's faster and stronger than any human or chimpanzee. He uses those super powers to stop A FREAKING SCHOOL SHOOTER, who calls himself "red pill Gary". Very subtle...
And then rednecks with confederate flag tattoos (did I mention this manga takes place in the USA?) start threatening Charlie's family and other vegans because the school shooter was one of those vegan terrorists and it only gets dumber and dumber.
The whole story is incredibly ham fisted and takes itself way too seriously. And it's full of clichés as well, the one girl who's nice to Charli, is introduced by rescuing a cat that's stuck in a tree. Like... come on.
And she also gets discriminated against for being vegan... and she falls in love with the chimpanzee-human hybrid... Because of course she does.
It's so fucking bad... I love it.

Star Wars: the political subtext
Many criticise modern films such as Disney’s post-Lucas Star Wars sequels for their overt "leftist" political messaging, claiming that Hollywood has been "infiltrated" by “woke” ideologues. And there is no doubt that the Disney Star Wars films are thinly-veiled political allegory, regardless of what Bob Iger says:
“Please note that the Empire is a white supremacist (human) organization.” - Chris Weitz
“…Opposed by a multicultural group led by brave women.” - Gary Whitta
But from a pro-European perspective, the original Star Wars trilogy (1977-1983) was replete with ethno-suicidal themes; the symbolism was always much the same. This should not be surprising: George Lucas is one of Hollywood's most successful directors, he's been a "leftist" since his student days at the latest and has since married an African woman, with whom he had his first biological child.
The key collective conflict in Star Wars is between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance.
The Empire: totalitarian, inhuman (faceless "Stormtroopers", most iconic figure is a cyborg), homogeneous/uniform, cold/austere, dictatorial, ultra-technological, genocidal (the Imperial “Death Star” destroys the planet which looks most similar to Earth, Alderaan), exclusively patriarchal (women are never seen among its ranks) and Northern European at core, a hybrid of Nazi Germany and the British Empire (the nation which opposed Nazism the longest, making the Empire a stand-in for the traditional Western order generally)
The Rebels: multiracial (Lando Calrissian is African, Han and Leia are played by Jewish actors), multispecies (Chewbacca), droid-inclusive (C-3P0, R2-D2), gender egalitarian (founded and led by a woman Mon Mothma and Leia is one of the three biggest heroes, implied to have Jedi potential similar to Luke's: "There is another" - Yoda), third worldist-coded coalition, the Empire’s symbolic inversion and antithesis
The primary philosophical battle is between the Jedi and the Sith. The Jedi are a monastic order led by Yoda; a humanoid midget alien and Asian-coded sage, whereas the Sith are led by a grotesque and seemingly decrepit British-accented Emperor.
Jedi: Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, Stoicism
Sith: Darwinism, Nietzscheanism, Machiavellianism, Sadism
The former is a universalist metaphysical syncretism broadly aligned with liberalism while the latter is linked to anti-Christian European philosophy and is intended to evoke Nazism. However, the Jedi philosophy, like liberalism itself, is deeply hypocritical: Obi Wan and Yoda deceive Luke with the intention of having him kill his father and sanction the killing of countless non-combatants in their war against the galactic sovereign. And the hatred which Jedi philosophy condemns is, in real life, repressed and transferred against illiberal/European symbols, despite Luke’s inconsistent and suicidal "If you kill your enemies, they win." pacifism towards The Emperor (after his initial attempt to kill him in a moment of rage). Star Wars employs a false binary of light and dark, placing the forces of love and hatred in blanket opposition to each other, when in reality one cannot have love without hating that which threatens it.
On the most personal symbolic level, the main conflict is between Aryan protagonist Luke Skywalker and his father Darth (a portmanteau of dark and death) Vader (an abbreviation of “invader”; a nod to Western colonialism). Jedi master and surrogate father figure Obi Wan lies to Luke, telling him that Vader “betrayed and murdered your father", manipulating “white saviour/white ally” Luke into fighting to destroy his father’s Empire. Ultimately, the corrupted chalk-white patriarch Vader finds redemption in death by destroying the Empire he built and lead with Palpatine (a transparent allegory for Hitler/Satan) and killing his master, resulting in Vader's ascension to immortality along with his former masters Obi Wan and Yoda.
While viewers (particularly in America) may feel that the Rebel Alliance solely represents America (the accents of the three primary heroes followed by the narrative are distinctly American, "The Empire" as Britain exclusively in their mind) based on a superficial reading which omits key facts (Lucas's claim that the primitive forest-dwelling indigenous Ewoks represent the Viet Cong, the heavy British-coded involvement in the Rebel Alliance), Star Wars trains the Western audience to see itself from the perspective of the third world, conditioned to feel exhilaration at their symbolic overthrowal and desiring to emulate Luke's example.
Had the Rebel Alliance been exclusively composed of European men, The Empire been a multicultural cesspool and the villain been a hooked-nosed Emperor with a Middle-Eastern accent, there would be no obscurantism about the political allegory.

Hello hello! I’m just here to knock on your door because I saw your tags on the ‘Jamie’s post-s3 career path’ poll and I really enjoyed them! (And didn’t want to clog up the notes of someone else’s poll about it)
If you ever wanted to share more in detail about any of these options, I’d love to know more! I am also delighted by the concept of Jamie moving to Leverkusen and ending up under Xabi Alonso, but Barca and Liverpool also have my interest.
No rush or expectations on answering this whatsoever. Just if you ever do feel like sharing, I would love to hear more.
Hm. So Leverkeusen is the option I know the least about and Xabi Alonso is 100% of the reason I put that as an option; he started at Leverkeusen in 2022, which is also when s3 ends, which means they would arrive at the same time. Xabi himself is a midfield legend for Liverpool with a famously amazing first touch, and Jamie also has an amazing first touch.

I am very much hoping (delusionally) that Xabi will end up at Liverpool next year, I think that would be poetic and fun and he seems like a really good coach, but on the subject of Liverpool and coaches: Jurgen Klopp.
He's probably a bigger inspiration for Ted than Pep is.
Pep is a brilliant tactician, deeply passionate, absolutely nuts, always losing it on the sidelines, whereas Klopp at least once forced his team to celebrate losing a final, ie, forced them to celebrate getting to a final even if the result wasn't what they wanted. I just watched the TAA interview with Gary Neville, and he also apparently doesn't focus on winning or losing, just wants Liverpool to be the hardest team to beat because they work so hard. All very Ted.
Except that crucially, Klopp is ALSO a brilliant tactician (he's no Pep, but he's no slouch either), meaning that he's like Ted except competent, passionate, and outwardly caring (sorry Ted), thereby making him perfect for Jamie.
Liverpool also run a very high press that I think Jamie would enjoy, and being in Liverpool would get him closer to home (he could totally drive home for dinner, it's only about an hour) while still keeping some space, which I think he would appreciate. I can see Georgie being a little overbearing when Jamie's in a less needy mood. And, of course, Liverpool also typically make European competition and are regular title contenders.
Assuming he went there in 2022, he would also get a whole year under Jordan Henderson, who we can go ahead and consider being like Roy, except that he's less talented, a better captain, and actually from Sunderland (I've seen it hypothesized that Roy is a reskinned Hendo). And I want to know what would happen if he and Darwin were on the pitch together (Darwin was Liverpool's big signing that summer, realistically Jamie would replace him, but I don't care) (Darwin is notoriously chaotic, a striker with dubious talent in finishing, but also an extremely hard-worker and he takes more chances than most, so his low conversion rate is expected). Also I think Jamie would have a bit of a crush on VVD and that would be funny and cute.
The Barca route is also very fun, and not even because Messi (he had already left at this point). It's basically only possible if Jamie's Richmond contract was up at the end of s3, Barca could never afford our boy otherwise. I've heard it said that true fans of the sport of football will pick Barcelona to watch over any other team (provided theirs isn't playing), and Jamie is nothing if not a fan of football.
They were also at their height when Jamie was a young teenager, a time period when I think he would have had the most time to watch while having already developed an immense interest in it. He would have watched Messi, of course, but also Xavi, Iniesta, and Busquets, who made up a midfield dynasty that I know no comparison for. They are all technically gifted, and two of those last three were still at Barca for the 22/23 season. Xavi coached the team, and Busi was captain.
And then also at this time, Barca were bringing up a new crop of very exciting youngsters, most notably Gavi and Pedri. Jamie is a few years older than them, but I think it would be fun for him to be a role model for a couple of ludicrously talented barely-adults. He would not know what to do with himself.
I also think Jamie is maybe better suited for football abroad? Like he's very salt of the earth, "I work hard, yeah," but he also has this incredible swagger. How to use my limited knowledge to explain this. Spanish football culture seems to be less humble? More flamboyant? Like English football is full of a bunch of guys who are Just Some Dude. Harry Kane, Gary Neville, and in TL, also Roy. Jordan Henderson is PEAK some dude energy. Spanish football invented the term "Galactico" for its superstars.
I just think Jamie would love doing a little dance with his teammates after scoring.
#ted lasso#the dark horse i didn't mention is arsenal#mostly because i like odegaard#and think he and jamie should get to play together#one child prodigy burned out by expectations (public)#the other child prodigy burned out by expectations (private)#also mikel arteta is city's former assistant coach#so he would already know jamie well#i just don't think jamie would want to stay in london#thank you for sending this!!#i started like hm I don't think i have articulate thoughts but boy i sure do have thoughts#articulate? maybe not#i think i need a me tag

Gumball and Darwin: Love. What is love?
Bobert: Yes, that was my query.

Gumball and Darwin: We are love, and love is everything.
Bobert: Warning. Circular reference detected.
Carmen: I love my boyfriend.
Tobias: I love my toys.
Billy: I love my mother.
Banana Joe: And I love making noise [makes fart sound].
Rocky: I love my television.

Love is in the stars and love is in the trees.
Listen, Bobert, are you starting to believe?
Carrie: Love is invisible.
Rob: Love has no name.
Bobert: Love is scoring zero in a tennis game.
Gumball: Love is all around us.
Darwin: Love fills your heart.
Bobert: Stacked-up error. Please press "restart."
All: What is love? Does it fall from above?
Listen, Bobert you need to learn about, to learn about, to learn about love!

The second segment starts with the melted cheese guy talking to his sandwich to motivate himself to confess his feelings for Karen. As soon as Karen walks toward him, she slips on the sandwich, ending the segment.
