912: Diana Zimmerman - The Enchantress
Diana Zimmerman is an enchanting woman in every sense of the word: personality, charm, abilities, looks, intelligence, skill, and so much more. She has led a life of magic like few other women. And she is being recognized for her achievements by being inducted to the Los Angeles Times Global Magicians Hall of Fame on July 9th, 2025. Married at 19 to Dick Zimmerman, magician and creative genius, she performed around the world on television and stage with her one-woman performance. She traveled with a giant gramophone then later switched to a thumb tie and pick pocketing. She developed and still works with the Magic Castle Junior Program (which just celebrated their 50th year) and is the author of several books of fantasy. But she also authored the definitive collector’s edition of the Siegfried and Roy book.

Diana has so many stories that she shares with us this week including her early days working with her then-husband, Dick Zimmerman, then how Cary Grant encouraged her to form the junior program at the Magic Castle, and many stories about the late Siegfried and Roy. She was a close confidant to the illusionists and shares some “behind the scenes” stories from Little Bavaria to “the Incident” that ended their Las Vegas run.

The Original Channing Pollock
Your correspondent is one of the few people who requires the specificity that characterizes this post’s title. There was a later Channing Pollock, a magician who lived from 1926 through 2006. Obviously that later one was named after the ORIGINAL Channing Pollock (1880-1946), playwright, critic, lecturer, and a guy I should have written about a long time ago. Pollock was the son of a career…

Master Notes:
Decent capture of this show. Whenever Terry Mann is on stage it's a fancam. The first 20 minutes are completely blindly filmed so i defaulted to wideshotting most of it. Due to usher activity a lot of the show is shot this way, whenever he left i could zoom and such, second big issue with this video is the obstruction. The people in front of me never stopped moving and they kept getting into my shot constantly so there is a lot of obstruction that i try my absolute best to avoid. Some washout, shakiness and readjusting throughout.

Barbra Streisand performs “My Man” from Funny Girl (1968)
“This exquisite moment alone won her the Oscar. An actress using the song to express her pain and loss. Her vulnerability was connected to something very real. You feel it with her, as her voice soars. No one recreating the role could ever match that. A truly iconic film moment!”
Four years after starring in the Broadway musical Funny Girl, Barbra Streisand reprised the lead role of Fanny Brice in the 1968 film adaptation, which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1969. Set in early 1900s New York City, the story loosely follows the comedienne's ascent to stardom and her tumultuous relationship with gambler Nicky Arnstein in early 1900s New York City.
Although it didn't feature in the stage production, one of the standout numbers in the film was the finale, "My Man," an emotional ballad about Brice's love for her flawed partner, who chose a life of crime over a life of love. Streisand first recorded Brice's signature song for her 1965 album My Name Is Barbra, and the single peaked at #79 on the Hot 100 and #17 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
Based on the French song "Mon Homme," by Maurice Yvain, Jacques-Charles and Albert Willemetz, the English version was written by playwright Channing Pollock for Brice to perform in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1921. Pollock's interpretation played on the singer's strained relationship with Arnstein, who was doing time for a stolen securities plot while she was left to raise their two children alone. When he was released from prison in 1927, he abandoned his family, and Brice filed for divorce.

Michel Vitold and Channing Pollock in Judex (Georges Franju, 1963)
Cast: Channing Pollock, Francine Bergé, Edith Scob, Michel Vitold, Jacques Jouanneau, Théo Sarapo, Sylva Koscina. Screenplay: Jacques Champreux, Francis Lacassin, based on a screenplay by Arthur Bernède and Louis Feuillade. Cinematography: Marcel Fradetal. Art direction: Robert Giordani. Music: Maurice Jarre.
Judex is, like Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and the subsequent Indiana Jones sequels, an hommage more than a spoof. In both cases, the filmmakers were affectionately mimicking films of their youth: the cliff-hanging serials that often accompanied feature films. Unlike Spielberg, director Georges Franju had a particular director in mind: Louis Feuillade, who crafted adventure thrillers usually involving master criminals like the titular protagonist of Fantômas (1913) and the sinister Irma Vep of Les Vampires (1915-16). The original Judex serial of 1916 featured a masked crime-fighter, a figure that became increasingly popular after Douglas Fairbanks adapted a magazine story in The Mark of Zorro (Fred Niblo, 1920), leading to numerous comic books and movies about swashbucklers and superheroes using disguises to protect their secret identity. The archetype became so prevalent that eventually it was subject to amused mockery, as in the camped-up Batman TV series of 1966-68. But Franju isn't out to mock Feuillade's serials so much as to recapture some of the innocent thrills of the original, with sets and costumes evoking a pre-World War I naïveté. Judex (Channing Pollock) is a do-gooder who in the film is trying to expose the fraud and murder committed by a wealthy banker, Favraux (Michel Vitol). He has somehow disguised himself (with an obvious fake beard) as Favraux's secretary, Vallières-- the film never bothers with backstories of its characters, so we don't know how Judex/Vallières gained Favraux's confidence and trust -- and manages to fake Favraux's death and hide him away in an elaborate dungeon, where he watches Favraux via an improbably early version of television. But Judex's plans -- which are not entirely clear in any case -- are complicated by his adversary, Diana Monti (Francine Bergé), who has herself been operating as the governess for Favraux's granddaughter. And so on, through an increasingly intricate series of plot twists, clashes, escapes, last-minute rescues, and all of the trappings of the genre. It's really a good deal of fun, though it occasionally goes a little slack, especially if you're not in the mood for such Gallic nostalgia. Marcel Fradetel's black-and-white cinematography mimics the silent-movie style to the mark, even using old-fashion iris shots for transition, and at one point having the comic-relief detective, Cocantin (Jacques Jouanneau), peer through the keyhole, with what he witnesses viewed through a keyhole-shaped aperture. Judex is played by an American magician, Channing Pollock, who performs some sleight-of-hand involving doves. A very handsome presence but no actor, Pollock was hyped as a new Rudolph Valentino, but without success.
