One of the annoying things about being in a fandom for something that was originally in a foreign language is the amount of fans who just REFUSE to listen when it’s pointed out right in front of them that there was a mistranslation that either explains something or changes context, mostly because the more accurate translation doesn’t support their personal interpretations.

my piece for the @fesapphiczine! had not drawn these two in a hot minute before this zine so it was lovely to revisit them :-) actually though go watch their supports if you haven't they're really gay and also very cute

I don't think we acknowledge how interesting a character Mercedes is. Like she gets boiled down to 'group mum clumsy hehe'.

Like that's the woman who told her brother he was right to want to kill her because she needed to atone for abandoning him in an abusive household. Mercedes was 9, and Emile was 8. She's lived with that guilt for 13 years, even though she was a child. So much so that when he says he wants to kill her she says 'you are within your rights'. He snaps out of his murderous rage because he's so surprised that she will let him kill her. She thinks she deserves to die for what she did (which was something she had little to no control over when she was a vulnerable child)

She doesn't hate the crest system, but does hate the class system. She is aggressive to nobles who adore nobleness and harsh when she needs to be.

She has an amazing support chain with Sylvain which has her calling out his bull so many times. But she also talks about her past and is concerned that it bored him. Sylvain recognises it as what it is a tragic story that a child shouldn't have suffered through. Mercedes thought that being used for a crest and then being made homeless was a boring story? she's so used to this sort of thing being the norm that she thinks its dull and is happy to share it.

Then you have her and Sylvain making silly jokes with each other about marriage and kids

and then the conversation gets more insightful because they discuss Sylvain's experience with being assaulted/ harassed, and recognises all the signs and how he acts because she's been through that as well. She tells him she 'understands the pain you've had to carry'.

so to summarise in Sylvain's support chain alone she: has a wicked sense of humour, is blunt and firm, has a saviour complex, has a difficult past, struggles with the crest system, and has been abused in multiple different ways.

Why do we reduce her to team mom again?

Yeah she's also sweet and clumsy and gives without taking and a healer but she's also a lot of different things too.

I went to the eye doctor's yesterday and I, an adopted person, always feel like "oh no I'm failing the interaction" for some reason by not being able to relate. HOWEVER, I got praised for having common sense so it works out.

my little sister absolutely adores newsies, but she only likes the stage version and despises the 1992 version. (The stage version was the first one she saw, she's pretty young and still finds it distressing to see different people playing the same characters with different lines or plot points)

unfortunately for her, I prefer the 1992 version a lot of the time, so I'll be listening to carrying the banner (as example) in my room and when we pass a line that's different you can just hear. "Welcome to new yooork" "MUM, CHARLIES LISTENING TO THE HELL NOISE"

Do people realize they can criticize Engage without insulting the fans as dumbasses who lack critical thinking and the creators as lazy hacks who put no heart, thought, and effort into the game? Like, this isn’t asking you to like it or call it good, there are plenty of bad properties that were made from the heart with earnest effort but still failed. Someone can like a something you dislike without being a moron with no standards who is lying to themself.
