so I'd never caught this before because of Racetrack, but if you listen closely Mush is definitely saying "Dave, he's back!"

So I headcanon Bumlets as Puerto Rican, right? Well, there's a little part near the end of Newsies where, after Roosevelt shows up, you hear Race asking the guy standing next to him about Roosevelt (you can hear him say "That's Roosevelt?") And who is standing next to him? Bumlets! And why is that relevant? Because Roosevelt fought in the Spanish-American War, which led to Puerto Rico becoming a US territory! Obviously, Roosevelt fought in Cuba and not Puerto Rico but fighting in the war helped with his campaign for governor (and his later presidential campaign). He was probably a big deal to Puerto Rican immigrants in America based on that fact alone and I don't think a teenage Puerto Rican newsboy would be any exception. Especially since Bumlets had a front-row seat to all of the war news and election news. He probably drove the rest of the guys crazy talking about it all the time and it's a damn shame he didn't know David and Denton then because they would've had the time of their lives talking about it.

If i were to put the newsies in a fantasy medieval period, what would be the best option for handling religion?

Because David is jewish, and im assuming that’s important to those who share his belief. But the vast majority of medieval England were catholic or smth? Also as an athiest my first instinct is to just ignore the reigoous aspect of that time bc 1. This is still fantasy and not entirely historically accurate and 2. Bc religion has never been a strong suit obviously

Or should it just be a vague relious belief similar to greeks or romans? Or just ignore it because religion isn’t the focus of this fic AT ALL it just happens to be a medieval setting?

Is it disrepectful to make him a critic of religion considering he’s jewish?

woke up in a cold sweat to remind people that while davey has it better than jack and the other newsboys, he is still poor. he is still a child working on the streets. he is still a child who had to drop out of school, put his life on hold, to feed his family. he’s not well-off by any means and i am a little baffled at how many people seem to think he’s the “rich one.” in reality, they were probably struggling for a long time before davey stopped going to school- i can’t imagine esther and mayer would just spring this on him, or even want him to lose his education- and they were using every last penny to make it work but it just wasn’t enough. davey, sarah, and les leaving school was a last resort because the jacobs family is poor. they are poor. davey is not the rich one. davey is not the mom friend just because he has a family. davey is a scared teenage boy who wants to do right by the people he loves, who has the world on his shoulders, who is desperate to help his family out of the hole the systems in power have pushed them into. david jacobs is not the rich one.
