Writing Notes: Food (5 Mother Sauces)
for writing your cooking and other food-related scenes
Mother sauces, first classified by French Chef Marie-Antoine Carême and later codified by Auguste Escoffier, are the starting points for countless ‘daughter’ sauces in French cuisine.
In 1833, Marie Antoine Carême published a classification of French sauces in his reference cookbook L’art de la cuisine française au XIXe siècle ("The Art of French Cuisine in the 19th Century").
These foundations are essential to traditional French culinary creations, but by adding various ingredients can be transformed into a wide range of sauces ready to enhance and complete different dishes.
The Roux
Master the making of roux (“roo”), and you will have a variety of French sauces at your fingertips.
Roux is basically cooking fat and flour together before adding in the liquid you want to thicken.
The fat used is generally butter, but oil or other fats can also be used.
The fat and flour cook together to cook out some of the floury, pasty flavor in the flour.
Cook the mixture for 5 minutes for white, 20 minutes for blond, or 35 minutes for brown roux.
The darker the roux, the nuttier the flavor.
When the liquid is added to the roux, and everything comes to a boil, the flour thickens the liquid, and you end up with sauce.
Four out of the five mother sauces are thickened by roux.
The 5 French “Mother Sauces”
1. Béchamel (“bay-sha-mel”)
Tumblr media
Also known as a white sauce, this is a white roux whisked with milk or other dairy to make a white sauce.
White and just a tad bit thicker than heavy cream.
The flavoring is up to you, although the French like to do a little salt and pepper, while the Italians like to throw on a pinch of nutmeg.
Another traditional flavoring option is to steep the milk with a whole onion that has been studded with a couple of cloves and a bay leaf before being combined with the roux.
By itself, béchamel is quite bland, which is why it is usually cooked with other ingredients and not used as a finishing sauce.
Béchamel is classically served with eggs, fish, steamed poultry, steamed vegetables, pastas, and veal.
The sister sauces include:
Mornay = béchamel + Gruyère + Parmesan + butter
Cheese = béchamel + cheddar + Worcestershire sauce + dry mustard
Soubise = béchamel + onions + butter
2. Velouté (“vuh-loo-tay”)
Tumblr media
It’s made similar to a béchamel, except in this case, stock replaces the milk.
A velouté is a blond roux whisked with chicken, turkey, fish, or any other clear stock.
The resulting sauce takes on the flavor of the stock, and the name is derived from the French word for velvet, which suitably describes this smooth but light and delicate sauce.
Commonly, the sauce produced will be referred to by the type of stock used, for example, chicken velouté.
Velouté is classically served with eggs, fish, steamed poultry, steamed vegetables, and pastas.
The sister sauces include:
Bercy = velouté +shallots + white wine + fish stock + butter + parsley
Normandy = fish velouté + fish stock + mushrooms + liaison
Allemande = veal/chicken velouté + liaison
Suprême = chicken velouté + cream
3. Espagnole (“es-puhn-yohl”)
Tumblr media
Commonly known as brown sauce, this rich sauce is made using beef or veal stock, tomato puree, and mirepoix (meer-ph), which is a combination of diced carrots, celery, and onions, all thickened with a very dark brown roux.
If you’ve heard of demi-glace (deh-mee-glass), it’s nothing more than equal parts of Espagnole sauce and brown stock that has been reduced by half for an even more flavorful sauce.
Espagnole is rarely served on its own due to the strong flavors.
Espagnole is classically served with roasted meats like beef, veal, lamb, and duck.
The sister sauces include:
Bordelaise = demi-glace + red wine + shallots + bay leaf + thyme + black pepper
Châteaubriand = demi-glace + mushrooms + shallots + lemon juice + cayenne pepper + tarragon + butter
Madeira = demi-glace + Madeira wine
Mushroom = demi-glace + mushroom caps
4. Hollandaise (“hol-uhn-dehz”)
Tumblr media
This is the one mother sauce not thickened by a roux.
Hollandaise sauce is an emulsion of butter and lemon juice or vinegar using egg yolks as the emulsifying agent (to bind the sauce), usually seasoned with salt and a little black pepper or cayenne pepper.
Heat control is essential here to prevent curdling of the sauce, and therefore, it is usually done in a double boiler.
Hollandaise sauce is classically served with eggs (Eggs Benedict), vegetables (especially asparagus), light poultry dishes, and fish.
The sister sauces include:
Béarnaise = hollandaise + shallots + tarragon + chervil + peppercorns + white wine vinegar
Chantilly = hollandaise + whipped heavy cream. The tomato sauce is classically served with pasta, fish, vegetables, polenta, veal, poultry, bread, and dumplings such as gnocchi.
5. Tomate (“toe-maht”)
Tumblr media
Sauce tomate, better known as tomato sauce, is based on tomatoes.
A roux is traditionally used in making tomato sauce, but many chefs skip it because the tomatoes themselves are enough to thicken the sauce.
The classic sauce tomate is made with salted pork belly, onions, bay leaves, thyme, pureed or fresh tomatoes, roux, garlic, salt, sugar, and pepper.
If you don’t want to get that fancy, you can leave out the pork belly and roux to make a standard tomato sauce.
The sister sauces include:
Creole = tomato sauce + onion + celery + garlic + bay leaf + thyme + green pepper + hot sauce
Spanish = creole sauce + mushrooms + olives
Milanaise = tomato sauce + mushrooms + butter + cooked ham

Stages of Decomposition #1
First Stage: Autolysis
once death has occurred and the internal organs are no longer functioning, there is leftover CO2 (carbon dioxide), due to the organs that can clear any waste ceasing to operate. this leads to the body’s pH becoming acidic. studies have shown that over the course of approximately 20 hours post-mortem, the pH of the corpse will change from 7.0 to roughly 5.5. this drastic change in pH is harmful to cell membranes within our bodies, which may lead them to become damaged and allows the enzymes within the body to roam freely.
these enzymes then begin breaking down the cells, essentially eating them away, causing the stage of decay known as autolysis (also known as self-digestion).
during this time, other death states are likely to also occur, such as livor mortis (post-mortem hypostasis - basically the blood pools in areas of the body due to it no longer being pumped round and gravity now causes it to rest in place, this may cause dark patches on the body where the blood is resting) and rigor mortis (post-mortem rigidity - the body becomes almost frozen and stiffens, which is caused by the levels of ATP being severely decreased).
entomology is also an important post-mortem factor, as the study of which insects eating the cadaver and how many generations of said insect are living in the orifices, helps to determine the post-mortem interval (time of death).

Building a Killer Confidence Routine | The IT GIRL DIARIES
Confidence isn’t something you’re born with—it’s built through consistent, intentional actions. Whether you want to feel more confident in your career, social life, or personal well-being, developing a routine to nurture your body and mind can transform your self-esteem into a superpower. Here’s how you can start building a killer confidence routine using simple daily habits and mindset shifts.
1. Prioritize Your Physical Health 💪🏽
Your physical health has a huge impact on your confidence. When you feel good in your body, you carry yourself with more poise and assurance. Regular exercise, even 30 minutes a day, helps you release tension, boost endorphins, and improve your posture—important signals of confidence.
Whether it’s indoor cycling, skipping, or stretching, moving your body three times a week will help you feel energized and strong. Pair that with a nutrient-dense diet that avoids processed foods and sugar, and you’ll notice a boost in both your mood and self-image.
2. Start Your Day with Hydration 💧
How you start your day sets the tone for how you feel and perform. Begin your morning with hot lemon water to hydrate and detoxify your system, then follow it up with a green juice packed with leafy greens, cucumber, ginger, and more to fuel your body with essential vitamins and minerals. By nourishing yourself early on, you’re telling yourself you deserve care and attention from the start.
3. Take Care of Your Skin and Hair 💇‍♀️
Confidence often begins with how you feel in your own skin. A consistent skincare routine can make a big difference in how you see yourself. Taking care of your skin through hydration, proper cleansing, and supplements like zinc gives you a healthy glow, which boosts your self-assurance. Clean your environment regularly, from pillowcases to hair tools, to maintain this glow.
4. Manage Stress and Improve Sleep 🧖🏽‍♀️
Stress can wreak havoc on your confidence, and poor sleep only makes it worse. Managing stress with daily habits like taking ashwagandha to lower cortisol levels or magnesium for better sleep ensures you’re rested and calm. Prioritizing your sleep means you’re equipped to handle challenges with grace and resilience, both key components of confidence.
5. Nurture a Healthy Gut for a Clear Mind 🥗
Gut health and confidence are deeply linked. If you’ve ever struggled with digestive issues or breakouts, you know how it can affect your mood. Keeping your gut healthy through a balanced diet, daily green juice, and supplements like cranberry pills for pH balance will keep your skin clear and your mind focused. Feeling clear and energized internally will reflect externally in your posture and self-expression.
6. Adopt a Positive Mindset 💭
Confidence is as much about mindset as it is about physical habits. Start each day by affirming your worth and setting intentions. Remind yourself that setbacks are part of the process, not an indication of failure. Celebrate small wins, like sticking to your workout or nourishing your body with healthy food.
By consistently implementing these habits and mindset shifts, you’ll find that confidence becomes second nature. You’ll stand taller, feel stronger, and face every day with an unwavering belief in your abilities. With a routine rooted in health, mindfulness, and self-care, you’re already on your way to making confidence your ultimate superpower.

A Skincare Ritual for the Post-Pilates Glow 🤍✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After an invigorating pilates session, your body feels revitalized, and your mind is clear. But to truly embrace that post-pilates glow, it’s essential to enhance your skincare routine with nourishing rituals that keep your skin radiant and healthy. Here’s a chic guide to achieving that coveted glow with a simple yet luxurious skincare regimen designed specifically for after your workout.
1. Hydrate with a Gentle Cleanser
Post-workout, your skin can feel sweaty and tired, making it crucial to cleanse effectively yet gently. Start with a hydrating cleanser that removes impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid to ensure your skin retains moisture.
How to Use:
Apply a small amount to damp skin, massage gently in circular motions, and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Follow up with a soft towel to pat your skin dry.
2. Refresh with a Facial Toner
After cleansing, apply a facial toner to refresh and prep your skin for the next steps. Toners help balance the skin’s pH, remove any leftover impurities, and provide an extra layer of hydration. Look for a toner infused with soothing ingredients like rose water or witch hazel.
How to Use:
Soak a cotton pad with toner and swipe it across your face and neck, or simply mist it directly onto your skin. Allow it to absorb before moving on to the next step.
3. Nourish with a Vitamin C Serum
Once your skin is cleansed and toned, it’s time to apply a Vitamin C serum. This powerhouse ingredient brightens the complexion, helps even skin tone, and fights free radicals.
How to Use:
Apply a few drops to your fingertips and gently press the serum into your skin, focusing on areas that need extra attention. Allow the serum to absorb fully before moving on to the next step.
4. Moisturize with a Vitamin C Cream
Choose a luxurious moisturizer that nourishes and hydrates your skin. Look for a cream rich in antioxidants like Vitamin C and hydrating ingredients like squalane or marula oil.
How to Use:
Take a small amount and warm it between your palms before applying it to your face and neck. Use upward motions to promote circulation and lymphatic drainage.
5. Add a Vitamin C Oil to Lock Everything In
To seal in all that goodness, add a Vitamin C oil like this one here to add even more anti-aging and skin barrier benefits. It’s important that your face oil doesn’t leave your face greasy, but it gives a nice glow with an extremely lightweight feel. Our Vitamin C & Enzyme Oil gives an extra boost of nature's vitamin C and enzymes. Formulated with papaya extracts, its natural enzyme content featuring Papain, is known to brighten uneven skin tones, fight to lighten dark marks and scarring, and give your skin a healthy, radiant glow. You can find this product here.
How to Use:
Apply a few drops to clean fingertips or to clean skin and rub gently, avoiding the eye area.
6. Finish with a Glow-Enhancing Sunscreen
Even if you’re not heading outdoors right after your pilates session, applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential to protect your skin from harmful UV-rays. Choose a lightweight, glow-enhancing formula that leaves a dewy finish.
How to Use:
Apply generously to your face and neck, ensuring even coverage. Let it sink in for a few minutes before applying makeup, if desired.
7. Bonus: Post-Workout Facial Massage
To further enhance your post-pilates glow, consider incorporating a facial massage into your routine. This not only promotes relaxation but also improves circulation and lymphatic drainage.
How to Do It:
Using your fingers or a facial roller, gently massage your face in upward and outward motions for a few minutes. Focus on areas that hold tension, like the jawline and forehead.
Embrace Your Post-Pilates Glow!
By incorporating these steps into your post-pilates skincare routine, you’ll not only feel refreshed and rejuvenated but also radiate that coveted glow. Remember, self-care is a luxury, and treating yourself to a chic skincare ritual is the perfect way to celebrate your commitment to wellness and beauty. Embrace the glow, and let your skin shine as brightly as your spirit!

Legends and myths about trees
Celtic beliefs in trees (28)
Ph for Phagos (Beech) - all year around, the Celtic Tree Calendar (Ref)
Stars: Mercury, Saturn; Gender: female; Element: air, earth; Patrons: Ogma, Thoth, Hermes, Mercurius, Odin, Kronos; Symbols: learning + knowledge, wisdom + understanding, prosperity
The beech tree is a tree of learning, a symbol of prosperity and success. When walking through a beech forest, the large trees with the smooth, silver-grey bark and the curves created by the trunk and branches are like a living elephant or rhinoceros, giving you a sense of relief all year round.
In spring, the beech forests are bright and breezy, and the bluebells are in full bloom, the contrast between the dazzling young leaf colours and the blue announces that ‘spring has come’. In spring, the beech spreads soft, translucent, golden-green leaves with a fan-like shape, and in summer these leaves eventually become hard and dark green in colour, changing to yellow, reddish brown or golden in autumn. It is an essential tree for the forest.
The beech tree symbolises the written word, human innate wisdom and ancient knowledge. In olden times, writing was written on beech wood, and the first books were made by binding thinly cut beech wood. Before that, they were scrolls.
The beech tree is associated with deities of wisdom, knowledge and intelligence, such as Odin in Norse mythology, who brought us the runes, or the inventor of the Ogham script; the great warrior of the Tuatha Dé Danann; the monstrous strength of the eighty oxen; and the Celtic god, the sun-faced Ogma. And because of its connection with the creation of the secret code alphabet, it is also a symbol of divination and prophecy.

Lavender
Lavandula officinalis
Known as: Elf leaf, nard, nardus & spike
Related plants: A member of the mint family Lamiaceae, there are genus of 47 known species of lavender. It includes well known plants such basil, mint, rosemary, sage, savory, marjoram, oregano, hyssop, thyme, lavender, and perilla, as well as catnip, salvia, bee balm, wild dagga & oriental motherwort.
Parts used: Flowers
Habitat and cultivation: This flowering plant is native to the the Mediterranean
Plant type: Perennial
Region: Most are hardy from Zones 5 to 9 | Spanish Lavender (L. stoechas) is only hardy in Zones 7 to 9.
Harvest: You can harvest all the budding spikes or flowers on your plant during the growing season but avoid cutting into woody growth. Don't want to take more than 1/3 of the plant at this time & limiting your harvest to flowers and buds should keep you within recommended limits. As first frost approaches, snip off woody, leafy stems & branching. You can safely take up to 2/3 of the plant at this time. Harvesting too early can stimulate more growth which you don't want since the lavender is moving into winter dormancy.
Growing tips: To grow lavender successfully it needs well-drained soil, full sun & may be a good idea to check the PH beforehand because soil too acidic may kill off your plants. It survives well in dry conditions, so you'll only have to water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Plant lavender in spring, once all chances of frost have passed. This beautiful, fragrant herb is a great addition to raised beds, in-ground gardens, and growing in containers spacing plants 12 to 18 inches apart.
Medicinal information: Taking lavender products by mouth, including teas and a specific oil supplement or inhaling lavender oil as aromatherapy, seem to reduce symptoms of depression & anxiety. Lavender oil is believed to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to heal & burns & bug bites. Some studies suggest that consuming lavender as a tea can help digestive issues such as vomiting, nausea, intestinal gas, upset stomach, & abdominal swelling. A study published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology found that lavender oil could be effective in combating antifungal-resistant infections. Using it as aromatherapy can also reduce colic symptoms & menstrual cramp pain.
Cautions: Lavender essential oil is possibly safe when inhaled as aromatherapy, but applying products that contain lavender oil to the skin is possibly unsafe for young cis males who haven't reached puberty. The oil seems to have hormone-like effects that could disrupt normal hormones & in some cases, this has resulted in breast growth.
Lavender might cause sleepiness and slowed breathing. Taking lavender with sedative medications might cause breathing problems and/or too much sleepiness.
Lavender might slow down the central nervous system. If used with anesthesia and other medications given during and after surgery, it might slow down the central nervous system too much. Stop using lavender at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
Magickal properties
Gender: Masculine

Note
I’m curious, how do you make your hot sauce? Asking as someone who also has an abundance of hot peppers right now 😶
It's not hard!! It's essentially just:
chop up peppers WEAR GLOVES
chuck chopped peppers in blender
add vinegar at a 1:2 peppers to vinegar ratio. I use regular white distilled vinegar. I also add a few tablespoons of salt. that's it.
bring to a boil and then cook down for about 15-20 minutes at a simmer. I do this outside using a hot plate.
add back to blender and blend smooth. if the consistency is too thick, you can add a bit more vinegar.
clean and disinfect all bottles and lids, then I use a funnel to pour. I wash with soapy water and then sterilize with star-san which may be overkill but eh
I wear eye protection in case of splashes throughout the whole blending and cooking and bottling process, especially for super hots
if you're adding other stuff to your hot sauce, you may have to adjust the ratios and also test pH but with only acidic ingredients, I do not bother. I also don't do a hot water bath afterward because I refrigerate mine and replace yearly.
the sauce is technically shelf stable but will taste and look better for longer if stored in the fridge. I usually dump old sauce after I make a new batch just because I do not have space in my fridge and it does get more discolored over time.
I think that's it? there are many more advanced ways to make hot sauce but I've been making it this way since 2018

I have to talk about Misha I’ve been holding this for so long. I am not defending him, everything he’s done is fucked up. I just want people to understand him better and idk how coherent this will be but HSVDVXHSBSJJDF
Tumblr media
Bc if you hate him, totally justified. But I don’t want Misha to ever be simplified to the jealous crazy younger brother. Yes he is technically that but one thing about mochijun characters is that most of the time, you can always dig further into their psyche. And I feel like not enough people do that with Misha. I haven’t made an in-depth Misha discussion until now mostly bc I’m a potato. He isn’t 2-dimensional and he fits perfectly in the themes of vnc. Misha cannot be saved, he is a hopeless character, he bears Luna’s Mark while using the Book he is doomed. You can say he was doomed the second he entered the story. His brotherly love for Vanitas is twisted. He is the embodiment of tragic. Everything that led him to this point was not his fault. The only thing he chose was to follow Luna and join their clan bc he would’ve died otherwise. Luna and Vanitas are the only good things he ever had.
Tumblr media
We all know his backstory. So of course losing both would make him snap. And on top of all this he’s being manipulated by Teacher. Who fucking knows the lies or orders Teacher has been feeding him. All this when he’s like 12....13 at most.
Tumblr media
And let’s approach the vanoé situation. We know the depth of vanoé’s relationship and even though Misha might’ve observed from afar, he doesn’t have that context. To be fair he probably wouldn’t care but point is, he sees Noé as some random guy. And again, let’s withdraw ourselves a bit and see things from the outside. How much time has passed since chapter 1? How long has Vanitas and Noé actually known each other? We know that a couple weeks passed since the end of the Gevaudan arc. We know that a week passed after Vanoé got kicked outta Ruthven’s study. If there are any other mini time skips I’m forgetting pls lemme know. But let’s be honest, they’ve known each other for two months. If we wanna push it, three. Of course how long you know a person doesn’t solely decide how close you get to them. You can know someone for two weeks but depending wtf goes on in that time frame, they can become your ride or die. But let’s use Misha’s logic for a minute.
You’ve known Vanitas longer, both of you went through hell under Dr. Moreau. You have the same Mark, you’re gonna suffer the same fate. And from how you see it, he chose a man he met by chance a few months ago, over you. Someone who will never truly get it. He is putting his life in the hands of a stranger over yours. You finally meet again after all this time, and the brother who you believed puts you above everything, points a gun at you. Yeah, Misha fucked up. But that will hurt anybody.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Misha challenges their relationship. He questions how much it even makes sense. It’s not only “how can you chose Noé over me?” But also “How can you kill Father but not him?” Is he more important than us?? And that’s a valid question. Messed up but understandable to ask. Noé has protected Vanitas and has been pretty helpful. But Vanitas doesn’t need him to survive. Noé isn’t essential for this suicide mission he’s on either. Misha cannot understand what Noé brings to Vanitas’ life.
Tumblr media
Misha was so dependent on Vanitas that he couldn’t fathom his brother not feeling the same. Vanitas loves Misha, no matter how strained or corrupted that bond has become. But he is not emotionally capable to stay with him. And he is allowed to feel that way. And Misha is allowed to scream and wail and be broken about it. In conclusion, Misha is an amazing addition to the narrative, I love him a lot. But I also love Vincent from ph so that explains quite a bit doesn’t it?

Pretty Kitty and care tips
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I prefer shaving over waxing or hair removal creams (which I find do more harm than good). While waxing is effective, I feel like it's not always possible to get waxed, especially for spontaneous plans. This is where I come in to give my tips for meri priyein sakhis.
1. Trim First
Before shaving, trim the hairs if needed. The shorter the hair, the easier and closer the shave will be.
2. Exfoliate
Exfoliation is crucial. It removes dead cells that may clog your hair follicles, prepares the follicles for hair removal and may prevent ingrown hairs. Use a gentle exfoliator or mild scrub specifically for sensitive areas or tools like loofahs or exfoliating gloves. Continue exfoliating every few days after shaving.
3. Apply Shaving Cream/ Gel
Use a shaving cream or gel that's suitable for sensitive skin, ex- oils, non-scented baby soaps, sensitive skin shaving gels. It's best to do your own research. Remember whatever you choose to apply is strictly for outside and not to go on the inside portion of the vagina. Let it sit for a few minutes to soften the hairs.
4. Choose the Right Razor
A good razor is essential. Men's razor could be a good alternative since it's mostly for sensitive skin. Again, I think you should do your own research before buying. Also, keep your normal shaving razor and vag razor different.
5. Shaving Technique
Most important step in shaving is the direction in which you shave which is in the direction of hair growth (downwards), not against it. Another method is side to side but never upwards or against the grain because that causes irritation & hair bumps. So on, don't press too hard and avoid over-shaving the same area.
6. Aftercare
Rinse with cold water to soothe the skin. Apply products to prevent razor bumps, like coconut oil and use a natural moisturiser like aloe vera gel. Pat the skin dry and wear breathable clothes. Cotton underwear is best, or go commando to let your skin breathe.
mini care tips:
Use natural/organic pads, tampons and liners
Stop using products with fragrance on them on your body. They are extremely harmful and throws off your body's ph balance.
I know I said do your own research, but I still want to lay it out there that from my own experimentations and research, coconut oil is the best. No shaving creams or other products can compare. Though they ruin the razors really fast.
There's nothing wrong with your natural vagina smell but if you want it to taste sweet, try to incorporate more teas, water, lime water, cranberry juice and more natural food in general (fruits and vegetables) to keep your ph balanced.
I said this before but wear mainly cotton underwear and go commando as much as you would like to let your vagina breathe.
Men’s razors >>> women's razors. Cheaper, closer shave and cleaner.

affinities and sopiros are the super glue to my wips!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤪🤪🤪
i’m just gonna copy and paste a word vomit i went on and maybe clean it up to make more sense. but tldr affinities and sopiros are the main driving forces behind the wips in this shared “same continent” universe. because the continent doesn’t have a name (yet?) i’ll just list the current wips in it:
paramour (the fall of galeré series) // alizath // ph // teardrops of the gods // cult of the pale moon messiah // red death & the oracle’s favor
but that’s not in chronological order—because these wips don’t take place at the same time; sometimes hundreds of years removed from one another. the VERY TENTATIVE order i have currently (the middle is fuzzy but) is:
ph -> red death -> teardrops / pale moon messiah (i can see them happening around similar times tbh) -> alizath -> paramour (tfog)
but now that that’s kind of (barely cough) explained—here is my rant:
a lot of the way things have changed is in terms of how magic and the “supernatural” have evolved.
there’s no true origin of where mystical things have fully come from in this world but (i) will tell you that it’s main origin is actually up north in tsokhizhe’s country’s mountains (PH)—which is inhabited by the northern bands actually. their concept of magic is much more… vague.
to them essentially spirits/god/magic are all kinda rolled up into a thing they know as “affinities” they’re forces of nature as they are actual deities as they are spirits like. they’re everything supernatural all at once p much. in the northern bands, how they view it; these affinities are able to siphon off and grant a peak or a small mastery into certain aspects of their magic, which is actually how northern band clans derive individual names. gin’s name, for instance, is an offshoot of dark affinity, meaning specifically the magic associated with “the stillness of the dark” — meanwhile his father is demon-geke, which is “the brightness of the morning rays”, or a light affinity. there’s many more BUT basically people like these two, and zhonyi (an animal affinity; zhonyi means “bird”) are what the southern bands know as sopiros or, heretics. but for us, we would describe it as “witch”.
then a few hundred years later, we get alizath and how their witches (which are offshoots and descendants of sopiros) work. witches in alizath are interesting because they have only (1) ability (for the most part) but there is a COST to using it.
for example, the st. jora’s witch is a woman named mistral and she has telepathy (which is a far cry from the mostly nature related magic that sopiros had in the past); however, she is not able to speak her own thoughts—so her magic has literally made her mute. they get around this with a in house signed language that she can use to communicate with others, but YEAH. the reason for why witches have this restriction is a bit… unknown. tbh. meaning i have yet to find a reason PFF.
if i haaaad to think of one it’s probably because as humans began to study magic as a practice in its own, they came upon limitations because it had begun to deviate from the original affinities’s powers. telepathy, premonition, etc, none of those are based in “nature” tho can be achieved through study (since it’s possible to achieve through study, a different character, greye will become a witch in this way). but a born witch is different. and (spoilers ig) kirsi, a half witch (or half sopiro) is different. for sopiros, like zhonyi, the magic is inherent to them and in their veins—there is no “limitation” to its power but the only people like that known about in alizath so removed from tsokhizhe’s country, are half-witches. which are Explicitly banned SO—
EITHER WAY THO, if i take you to red’s story in red death & the oracle’s favor; red and hel are similar to the witches of alizath where their powers have limitations, but unlike the witches of alizath they are much stronger due to being born that way. it’s sort of a transition period from ph’s country as magic seeps into the populous of certain areas and diversifies.
this wip also brings up affinities coming to dwell on the continent
the entire chamber from paramour, the “vampire” in cult of the pale moon messiah, and even the auspicious and mysterious sea glass from teardrops of the gods i’d pretty much say are all affinities that have taken on more physical forms to dwell on earth. they are VASTLY different than one another because affinities cannot be contained by the limits of the human mind and understanding. sea glass is “technically” an inanimate object that grants those who use it vast powers with adverse side effects; the wolf queen is similar to the chamber where she also represents a “concept” that feeds but also has a more animalistic edge as an older affinity.
tbh i could go on but this ramble is a mess and not fully thought out yet because the plots of some of these wips are very up in the air. BUT. it was a good word vomit i wanted to share :)

Why the In Water ending is the most canon ending to Silent Hill 2
So Silent Hill 2 is in a weird spot with its endings, since it never got an official follow-up. Silent Hill 1 and 3 have canonical endings, and you can’t really argue that any other endings could be canon because of this. The closest thing to a “sequel” would be Silent Hill 4, since James’ father appears in it, and it takes place after Silent Hill 2.
Now the devs have stated that there is no canon ending, which technically works since again, James never shows up again. You could say any ending is canon, and it could work. Now the only “canon” thing we know about James after Silent Hill 2, is that he’s considered “missing” to the general public. What this means is either that he’s dead and his body hasn’t been found yet, or he’s disappeared.
Again, this can work with any ending you got, as you could just say he ran away in the Leave or Maria ending, so that doesn’t apply to my point. Let’s just say for now, he’s missing and continue.
I want to bring up is Pyramid Head. Masahiro Ito stated he designed Pyramid Head with the In Water ending in mind. Yes, this doesn’t confirm that that ending is the “true ending” but for somebody who is so adamant that Pyramid Head has to represent a specific thing and cannot be mishandled, it would be weird for him to design a character based on a specific ending that wouldn’t be canon. Now to be fair, I can’t tell where the In Water elements are, so it can’t be that noticeable but it’s his words not mine. (Maybe PH’s violent nature towards James represents James suicidal thoughts, which leads to In Water?)
Moving on, there is the Silent Hill 2 novel. Now, novel adaptations of games usually never work, especially games with multiple endings. Unless the game has multiple endings but a set, canon one is known then it’s usually difficult to choose an ending. Unless you wrote multiple endings and had the reader choose their own adventure, it would never work, you have to pick one. So what ending did the novel go with? In Water. Now take this with a grain of salt since the novel wasn’t written with any input from the develops as far as I’m aware, it was just a written adaptation, but it’s still an official book, and that’s the “canon ending” for it.
Now my last point, before I summarise. Silent Hill 4 was originally going to have James appear as a ghost. The concept art is the photo at the top of this post. Essentially, in the Otherworld, James would appear as a ghost haunting the apartments. We don’t know if he would be an enemy or just an Easter egg, since this was cut rather early in development and it obviously didn’t happen. It’s hard to use this as evidence since it was cut, but it was still considered, and with James’ father being in this game it implies a bigger connection. Now here’s the thing with this though… it’s not a representation of James, that wouldn’t make sense since Henry nor Walter or even Eileen knew James. This would’ve been the actual manifestation of James’ ghost. Like, this would’ve been him. Why is this important? Well that would mean he’s canonically dead then. Not missing. Dead.
Now taking all of the endings into consideration, James only dies in one. In Water. Unless you made up an excuse like, he died after the Maria ending, which is stupid. With James being canonically “missing” you could again, argue that he’s just in hiding, but if his literal ghost is showing up, that means he’s deceased. Since he only dies in the In Water ending that’s gotta be the most canon one then.
All of these things are small, but when put together it can’t just be a coincidence. Pyramid Head being designed with the idea that the In Water ending was going to be canon, James being “missing” in the present, James’ literal ghost showing up AND the official novelisation using the In Water ending. C’mon.
Now the reason I keep saying “most canon” is because it won’t be the definitive canon one. The devs have structured the game specifically so that every ending, EXCEPT for the 2 joke endings, could be canon, so if some random girl on Tumblr starts saying “Actually, the original developers of the game are wrong, this is the canon ending ☝️🤓” I sound stupid don’t I? The point is, there will never be a canon ending, because this game will never get a follow up. Sure we will continue to get Silent Hill games, but we’re never going to see James or his supporting cast again, so we can’t say what’s canon, and we never will. I’m just trying to say In Water is the most canon out of all of them, not that it is canon, in fact it’s not even my favourite ending. Mine is the Maria ending.

Do you have dental advice for people who struggle to take care of their teeth due to disability, depression, etc? I'm afraid of needing dental work but oral hygiene is really hard for me.
Alright so my advice as a future dentist (current dental assistant, not a dentist yet):
1. Find a toothbrush you like. Doesn't matter what brand or what kind. What's important is that you brush. If a toothbrush with cartoon characters on it is what will motivate you to brush, get it.
(If the brush head is smaller, though, than the usual adult brush heads, just remember to spend a little more time on each tooth since smaller brush heads cover less surface area).
If an electric toothbrush is your jam, get an electric toothbrush. Just get a toothbrush.
2. Find a toothpaste you like. Doesn't matter what brand or flavor. They pretty much all have the same ingredients. I would highly recommend toothpastes for sensitive gums, like Sensodyne or Oral-B, because if you haven't been practicing consistent oral hygiene for a while, your gums are most likely very sensitive. But really, any toothpaste is good. Just stay away from the charcoal stuff, it's more likely to do nothing at best and cause damage at worst (especially if you take medication).
3. Try to brush twice a day, but no more than three times a day. Brushing a whole bunch one day doesn't make up for not brushing the day before, too much brushing can damage your enamel with the abrasion.
Brushing once in the morning and once at night is ideal. Try to brush before you eat breakfast, or at least half an hour after you eat. Brush for about 2 minutes, making sure you brush each surface of your teeth.
Your teeth have five surfaces, three that are accessible via brushing: Make sure you brush the sides that face your cheeks, the sides that face the inside of your mouth, and the biting surfaces.
4. Try to floss once a day. There are different flossing methods now, find one that works.
-Traditional string and fingers
-Handheld floss picks
-Electric water pick
There are pros and cons to each, but the important thing is that you floss. Flossing is important regardless of whether you have food stuck between your teeth; flossing helps remove plaque deposits between your teeth that can build up and cause irritation to the gums. Make sure you floss between each tooth. If flossing a certain groove brings up a large amount of debris, floss that area again until the string comes out clean.
5. Drink lots of water. Unfortunately, this isn't a "as long as you're hydrated situation". Other beverages can be great for hydration, but they're either very sugary or acidic or both, which aren't good for maintaining the pH in your mouth. This doesn't mean you have to give up your favourite drinks- just make sure you also drink plenty of plain old water, especially during and between meals. Do whatever you can to incentivize drinking water: fun water bottles, fun drinking straws, alarms, whatever it takes.
6. If you struggle with remembering to brush your teeth and/or floss, set alarms to remind you.
7. Try to reward yourself for practicing good oral care. Maybe put on a short YouTube clip while you floss and brush, or play a song. This may sound corny, but have a chart that if you reach a certain quota you reward yourself. It'll help you turn oral hygiene into a habit.
8. If you can afford it, try to see a hygienist to give you a full clean. At the very least they'll help get your teeth back to a baseline, and then all you need to do is maintain it. Some places will have free or reduced cost dental clinics, so keep an eye out for those if cost is an issue. Hygienists don't do any drilling or invasive dental work if that's a fear you have, all they do is essentially a very thorough brushing and flossing.
9. Keep a toothbrush and toothpaste in your shower if time and spoons are an issue, that way you can brush your teeth while bathing, knocking two out in one. Likewise, keep a toothbrush and toothpaste by your bed if getting out of bed is an issue. If you can, you can try to buy a bunch of pre-pasted disposable toothbrushes to keep by your bed, so that you don't need to worry about even having to apply toothpaste to your toothbrush.
10. Don't give up if you fall off the wagon. If you forget to brush your teeth one day, you always have the next day. If you brush your teeth but didn't floss, at least you brushed. If you flossed but only gargled mouthwash, at least you did something. Something is always better than nothing.
Best of luck!!!
