if you'll allow me to resurrect the absolute worst twitter discourse: is landing on asteroids in space to acquire metals from them terra nullius or colonialism? if so, in what sense is it?
like with all 'space colonisation' (bad name for it) actually doing it would obviously not be colonialist (no people there innit) -- the way it's depicted in the cultural imaginary, however, definitely draws on the imagery and mythology of colonialism!

The Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 306 ordered SMNI hosts Lorraine Badoy and Jeffrey Celiz to pay [GMA 7 journalist Atom Araullo] P2.080 million in damages and lawyers’ fees to compensate for “the red-tagging and its effects on his personal life and on his career as a journalist,” Judge Dolly-Rose Bolante Prado said in her decision dated December 12, and released to media Friday, December 13.
The case is a game changer because it is the first known application of a Supreme Court (SC) decision publicized only last May that finally defined red-tagging as a threat to one’s constitutional right to life, liberty and security.
The QC court also explicitly said that red-tagging is “inherently malicious.” Malice is an element of criminal libel, but Article 33 of the Civil Code allows a separate and distinct civil action for defamation.
In determining whether red-tagging was malicious, the judge said that “an act that threatens fundamental rights inherently carries malice.”
“Even if the plaintiff is a public figure, there is no need for him to prove actual malice. The burden of proof falls on the defendants, who are the accusers, not on the plaintiff, the one being accused. The plaintiff, a victim of red-tagging, should not be burdened with the duty of proving malice,” said the court.
Badoy, a former communications undersecretary during the Duterte administration and ex-spokesperson for the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict, has a history of accusing individuals, including opposition figures, of links to the communist movement. She now co-hosts the SMNI show Laban Kasama Ng Bayan with Celiz.

Piston on Twitter @pistonph:
‼️BREAKING: Court junks BP880 case against PISTON National President Mody Floranda, PISTON Deputy Secretary General Ruben Baylon, and three other leaders due to the lack of probable cause.
Fittingly, this victory for our democratic rights has come to our attention on the same day that over 70 representatives, including Floranda himself, from people’s organizations filed an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte.
We call on the Filipino people to stand firm and push back against any attempts by those in power to undermine our economic and democratic rights.

ID below the cut
The attached photo of the document reads:
In fine, the evidence on record does NOT engender a reasonable belief that the accused, in conspiracy with each other, may have committed the offense and that they should stand trial.
WHEREFORE, for lack of probable cause, the case is hereby DISMISSED pursuant to Rule IlI (B), Section 3 of the Rates on Expedited Procedures in the First Level Courts

MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews / 10 December) – The Bangsamoro Parliament unanimously approved the Bangsamoro Indigenous Peoples Act (BIPA) of 2024 on its third and final reading during a special session on Tuesday, according to a press release from the regional legislative body’s Publication and Media Relations Division.
The law, which was passed with 63 votes in favor, zero against, and no abstentions, “has been recognized as a historic success in the region’s ongoing peace process and commitment to inclusive governance.”
BIPA recognizes the IP’s ownership over their ownership of their ancestral domains, referred to as fusaka ingëd, and natural resources in these territories.
The press release quoted Ramon Piang, chair of the committee on Indigenous Peoples affairs as saying that the BIPA is an enhanced version of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act, “specifically designed to meet the unique needs of the Bangsamoro’s indigenous population.”
Indigenous Peoples in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) include the non-Moro IPs (Téduray, Lambangian, Dulangan Manobo, Erumanun Ne Menuvu, Higaonon, B’laan), and the Badjao, Sama Dilaut, Jama Mapun, Sama Bangingi, and Sama Pangutaran in the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.
The Supreme Court, however, has ruled with finality on Sulu’s removal from BARMM. (MindaNews)

Fahed (@/fahed-2) & Reem (@/reem-reem-0), fled south together with their children & their children's grandmother. Fahed's sister's family of 5 fled south as well, and the 13 of them remained together. But after 14 months of surviving hell as a unit (and nearly reaching their campaign goal) the family is now facing one of the worse decisions imaginable: who will be able to evacuate Gaza and who will be forced to stay behind.
There may be an opportunity for evacuation soon, but they're bracing for separation, with Fahed staying behind with his sister and her family. It's hard enough reunifying in Gaza, but with the border with Egypt between them, there's no telling when (or if) they'll ever see each other again. It shouldn't be a choice this family has to make: who survives, who may not. Their kids shouldn't be forcibly separated from their dad, nor Reem from her husband.
Fahed & Reem are some of the kindest, gentlest people ever, and their kids are dazzling, just absolute sweethearts. They've all lost so much and experienced too much, and somehow, kept finding a way to endure.
But right now, they might lose each other, so please: pitch in what you can, help the Shehabs stay together 🙏
