What To Drink Now: Wine During A Pandemic
Tumblr media
I read a funny quote the other day noting that if we think we have it bad now, keep in mind in 20 years our world will be run by people educated by day drinkers.
As we find ourselves tempted to open our normal evening bottle of wine a little earlier in the day, make sure it is a quality selection, like one of these exceptional options. Drink #withme #AloneTogether #Cheers & #BeSafe
Long before…

Hypermobility and the moon (and other natural cycles)
Hypermobility and the moon (and other natural cycles)
I’m going to make this bold observation, since I live with hypermobility type EDS and have noticed this thing so very starkly now that it really bears saying out loud. Many people with hypermobility disorders seem to be asking “what triggers my symptoms, why do they get worse or more noticeable at certain times”, which suggests they are anything but consistent or predictable. Hypermobility…

I Should Be Asleep
I Should Be Asleep
Gavin is having an endoscopy and colonoscopy at 7:30 AM today. We have to be at the hospital at 5 AM, which means we have to leave at around 4:30. I haven’t slept. I’m going to look like Hell at the hospital.
Gavin was supposed to have this done about a month ago but we ran into a few snags. The anesthesiologist wanted him to have an evaluation by a cardiologist because there is a chance he could…

My Hysterectomy Decision
Though, the failed IUD situation kicked my “I want a hysterectomy NOW” into high gear, I’d wanted one for a few years. In fact, the appointment with my gynecologist where I decided to try the IUD was actually going to be my first attempt at talking to her about having a hysterectomy. I decided to try the IUD before asking about a hysterectomy. The first time I asked about having a hysterectomy…

EDS Chick and Doctors: Be Your Own Advocate
What’s up my zebra warriors?
Oh man. I have to say, my feelings about doctors have changed so much throughout these last few years. When I was a child, I put so much trust into my doctors; I thought they knew everything. Over the years, I’ve been: brushed off, told I was imagining things, told it was not possible for “x” to happen, or for “y” to be hurting “to that degree”.  I’ve been sent home…

Special Parents Confidential 61 Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes.
“The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes, or EDS is a group of connective tissue disorders characterized by joint hypermobility (joints that stretch further than normal), skin hyperextensibility (skin that can be stretched further than normal), and tissue fragility.”
The above is from the ‘What is EDS’ webpage of the Ehlers-Danlos Society. EDS is a genetic disorder that, for those…

Napa and Sonoma Valley Wine 101
Napa and Sonoma Valley Wine 101
While exploring Napa Valley and Sonoma, my companion and I stopped at three wineries, and received a crash course in Wine Tasting 101. Guess what state in the United States makes the most wine?  California makes 90% of the wine in the U.S.  It takes about six or eight clusters to fill a wine bottle; that’s approximately 600 to 800 wine grapes, or about 2.4 lbs. of grapes. One barrel of wine…

Mechanism of a flare-up - how understanding can lead to relief
Mechanism of a flare-up – how understanding can lead to relief
I could feel it coming on last night, the extreme tiredness, the classic temperature disregulation (ice cold waves but then red hot flushes), really spongy sore knee, intense headache and head pressure in waves, head too heavy for shoulders, sudden neck tension and swollen glands behind the ears, vision issues, a “weak heart” sensation and feeling of low blood pressure, my hip joints extremely…

Saturday Night Worthy Wines
Saturday Night Worthy Wines
Happy Aloha Friday! As you wrap up the week and get ready to spring forward this weekend, consider toasting with one of these beauties, each date night worthy. Bubbles are always Saturday night worthy, especially when they are as delicious as those crafted from Domaine Carneros. Domaine Carneros Brut Rose ($45) is light and fresh enough to awaken the palate enjoyed as an aperitif, but also has…

Should you really wear cushioned shoes with hypermobility issues?
When you can trust your feet, can feel the earth beneath you and when your body knows it can really trust where it is putting its weight down, your whole body relaxes and you become more instinctual in the way you walk; its foundational for health.
This post is going to be short and sweet but is just something I really, passionately want to put out there. I am always reading, in just so many places, that the only kind of footwear you should even consider if you have hypermobility issues such as joint laxity, hypermobile type EDS or even Chiari malformation and cervical instability, also chronic pain issues such as fibromyalgia, is the kind…

Hormones and autism
Related to my last post looking at hormones and chronic pain, does hormone imbalance make me present as more autistic (which is to say, throwing up more of the challenges of it than its many gifts)? In a sense, yes, for instance impacting executive function for two different reasons, depending which way my hormones are swinging. The core issue of autism is there anyway (including weak executive…

Who or what are you holding yourself together for?
Who or what are you holding yourself together for?
It’s an interesting question; one that has popped up for consideration several times over the past 16 years of my health adventure and perhaps even before that. There was a time I felt like I held myself together for my daughter, my family. There have been times I’ve done it for a parent, to see them through cancer and beyond, no matter what my problems…just keep on trucking, being there,…

Pre-Op, Surgery, and Post Op
Pre-Op, Surgery, and Post Op
(contains some graphic written content about surgical procedure) Pre-Op I had two pre-op appointments. One was with my gynecologist about a week or so before surgery, and the other was with a surgical nurse three or so days before surgery. For the pre-op with my gynecologist, I made sure to bring a list of questions, and boy did I have a lot. 1) What is being taken out? I found out that she would…
