At what stage of your education are you in

I’m just about to go into my second year of a 4 year zoology course

Favourite part of the first year of the course and why

Environmental science. It provided me with the opportunity to develop skills I would need for field work and travelling to the test sights gave me an opportunity to burn off any excess energy I would have because of my ADHD. The lab sessions helped as well.

Least favourite part of the course

Chemistry. I don’t understand it (I’ve had to use an “organic chemistry for dummies book for my assignment and cross my fingers and hope that I have passed)

What are your Future aspirations

Best case scenario I move to Australia and work at the Australia zoo. But I don’t work well in hot climates so I’ve had to change it

The options are

Work alongside the Cumbria wildlife trust to conserve costal and woodland habitats in my home town

Work in uk zoos to educate the public about conservation efforts both in the UK and abroad

Work with a costal conservation trust to increase the biodiversity in costal habitats

What is an interesting fact about yourself

I was born with 20% hearing in one of my ears and because of this I have to opportunity to get a cochlear implant

What, if any, are your Hobbies

I have been preforming with a amateur Theater company called WADAOS for the last 5 years and I am currently in rehearsals for into the woods

What are you looking forward in the next academic year

Studying course specific modules instead of classes that have to cover content for multiple different courses (zoology, biomedical science, geography, conservation ect)

Going on trips/residentials to further solidify the content that has been covered in class

Hopefully finding a group of friends in my class or block of flats (the past year has been so lonely 😭)

Living independently in a city that is closer to my college friends and that I have visited on MULTIPLE occasions so I know my way around

HAVING A PICNIC IN THE PARK!!!!!

As you know, I’m obsessed with a good beach. Some of you have noted that wherever I go, even if it’s brick cold, I will find a hot beach!

And that I did…in Cuba 🇨🇺!

I always pride myself on seeing some of the best beaches in the world, having already seen what was once the #1 on top lists for a while :

Whitehaven Beach, Whitsundays, Australia 🇦🇺

However, imagine my surprise when I learned that up until 2023, the #2 best beach (according to @Tripadvisor ) was right there in Cuba!!

ANZ Bank still top financer of fossilfuels, but one activist wrote a media release 10 years ago of what ANZ should do

Market Forces identify ANZ Bank at their 2022 Annual General Meeting that "Despite its commitments to the Paris Agreement and net zero by 2050, and in the knowledge that achieving these goals leaves no room for new fossil fuel projects, ANZ has received the dubious honour of being the most active lender to the fossil fuel industry in the last two years."

So what did this spoof media release say in 2012? It argued for ANZ Bank to discontinue its financing relationship with Whitehaven and adopt ESG policies in line with climate science. Remember this was before the Paris Agreement.

ANZ divests from Maules Creek Project

ANZ today announced it has withdrawn its $1.2 billion loan facility to Whitehaven Coal, which was primarily intended to develop the Maules Creek Coal Project.

The decision is related to volatility in the global coal market, expected cost blow-outs and ANZ's Corporate Responsibility policy.

ANZ Group Head of Corporate Sustainability, Toby Kent, said: “We want our customers to be assured that we will not be investing in coal projects that cause significant dislocation of farmers, unacceptable damage to the environment, or social conflict. The decision to withdraw our loan facility has been made after a careful analysis of reputational risks and analysis of the returns on this mine in the current climate of high volatility in the coal export market.”

Whitehaven Coal has been consulted in relation to the decision and the withdrawal of the loan facility became effective yesterday afternoon. The loan facility, which was drawn up on December 21, generated significant customer feedback and will no longer be enforceable. ANZ is currently undertaking a review of coal and gas investments on productive agricultural lands and areas of high biodiversity.
