My first ever Tales of Arcadia OC
I’ve got my ideas for an OC for a fanfic that I am currently working on. So I decided to just put it out there.
The name of my OC is Duncan Finlay, a Scottish boy, attending Arcadia Oaks High as a senior at the age of 18. Oh, and he’s also going to be the Trollhunter, mainly because it will make things easier for me for what I am going to do to him. (see my reimagining for the Triumbric stones and the Eclipse armor to get an idea) (also, I think he might have become a self-insert so… suffer, bitch! suffer!! (no shade at others who make self-inserts, I'm fine with that.))
I took some inspiration from Macbeth from the play by Shakespeare and the real-life King Duncan, along with Fionn Mac Cumhaill(pronounced Finn MacCool) for Duncan’s character. Speaking of which, I got the idea for Duncan’s name from the real-life King Duncan I. He was the king before Macbeth and wasn't the best king as he was young, weak, and not great at leading. His titles was “the sick” or “the diseased” and that instantly sold me on naming my OC: Duncan because of what I have in store for him.
Because I can’t art (or at least, art without it making me cringe (and if it makes me cringe, I don’t want anyone else to look at it )) here’s a description of him. Duncan has straight blonde hair that’s a bit messy and short at the back than it is at the front. He has a stubble on his chin, trying to grow a goatee that would cover his chin. His eyes are grey and has a pale skin color. He stands at about 5'11'' to 6 feet tall and is mostly slim yet has some muscle on him, but not much for you to think he’s got any abs. Usually, he wears a whitish-grey t-shirt with black pants that have a thick white line on each side.
Now, let me tell you about his troll form(half-troll if you wanna get technical). The colors of his body is similar to labradorite as that is what I believe the Daylight Stone is based on because, in the metaphysical world, it is said to be one of the most powerful protectors (put a pin in that) (firemountaingems.com/resources/encyclobeadia/gem-notes/gmstnprprtslbrd) and it’s a stone of magic and mystery and it is said to be a stone of change (friendsnyc.com/blogs/news/witchy-ways-labradorite-crystal-meaning-uses).
As a troll, he’s about 8 feet tall, his skin is predominantly blue (with some other colors here and there) and his hair becomes white. Side note, his hair being blonde as a human and it being white as a troll is a reference to Fionn Mac Cumhaill (a great warrior in irish myth) where Fionn means white or light-hued and is usually what you refer to someone who has blonde hair, and how some myths believed he got this name because his hair was turning prematurely white. As a troll, his hair becomes softer, he grows some sideburns and a full goatee. He grows more hair on the back of his neck, connected to a large spot of hair on the top part of his back that slims down as you go down his back and some hair on his shoulders, along with some chest hair that extends down his stomach. He’s also got a thick line of hair on the side of the forearm that starts below the elbow and ends above the wrist. His horns start at the top part of his forehead and curve back into a crescent shape. The color of his horns are a dusty grey and the tips start to become a pale green. Duncan has carvings on his troll body. However, normally, carvings on a troll’s body have a darker, faded color of their stone-skin; Duncan’s carvings are black that can glow bright blue. He also has a black spot in the shape of the Eye of Gunmar at the area of his right eye, which only the outline of it can glow. As of right now, I don’t have a reference to what his markings look like but I’ll work on it.
Before he became the Trollhunter, there was nothing much to say about Duncan, he was a good guy who likes to go on for walks as he listens to music, he does good in school, he never did any drugs or disobeyed anyone, he was the example of a well behaved person. Even though he’s a good guy, he never went out of his way to make any friends, or go to any parties. Because of this, he felt like his life was going nowhere, a blank slate where others tell him what to do. That was until he wound up being in the presence of Kanjigar’s death during one of his early morning walks. Duncan went down to the pile of rocks and picked up the amulet.
During his time as the Trollhunter, he began making friends, he felt like he was doing something with his life, he could finally release all his pent up frustration he gathered over the years through training. For the first time in a long time, he felt like he had a purpose for living. For the first time in a long time, the smile on his face wasn’t forced. For the first time in a long time, he was happy. And to him, it was all thanks to the amulet.
The reason why Merlin turned Duncan into a troll was not because “Your humanity is not enough”, but because his soul was corrupted, and he needed to be purified and his body to be turned into something that had a natural defense against evil, spiritual, forces. The purification process left Duncan’s soul quite broken, with a bunch of missing pieces being replaced by spiritual energy. With such a radical change to his soul, the Amulet could not tell if Duncan really was him and rejected him altogether. This little action inadvertently caused Duncan to believe he was no longer Duncan. He was no longer Human and he couldn’t be a troll as trolls turn to stone in daylight, where he can just walk around in it freely. He felt like he was a demon, an abomination that goes against nature. Duncan was alone.
Duncan subconsciously knew that his soul was being corrupted, the consciousness did not pick up on this fact. This subconscious knowledge caused him to develop a fear, a nightmare, where he is in the Darklands, seated on the dark throne, wearing the same kilt as Gunmar and wearing a looped necklace of skulls. At his feet, the beheaded remains of his human companions he made, along with the shattered remains of his troll friends. The skin color of his right eye has been turned to red, similar to a 3rd degree burn. His right eye lid is charcoal black and the eye itself looked just like Gunmar’s. As he is seated upon the dark throne, the Gumm-Gumm army are gathered at the throne room, chanting: “Long live the new Gumm-Gumm king! All hail Duncan the Red!”
Welp, that's all for now! See you next time.

On August 15th 1057 Scottish monarch, MacBeth, was killed at Lumphanan.
The saying, You live by the sword, you die by the sword, is certainly true in the case of MacBeth, as I told you yesterday he seized the crown at Pitgaveny some 17 years before, MacBeth must surely have been a true Warrior King.
Considered to be one of the last Gaelic kings, Macbeth was a king of the Scots whose rule was marked by efficient government and the promotion of Christianity, but who is best known as the murderer and usurper in William Shakespeare’s tragedy.
Shakespeare’s Macbeth bears little resemblance to the real 11th century Scottish king.
Mac Bethad mac Findláich, known in English as Macbeth, was born in around 1005. His father was Finlay, Mormaer of Moray, and his mother may have been Donada, second daughter of Malcolm II. A ‘mormaer’ was literally a high steward of one of the ancient Celtic provinces of Scotland, but in Latin documents the word is usually translated as 'comes’, which means earl.
His marriage to Kenneth III’s granddaughter Gruoch strengthened his claim to the throne. In 1045, Macbeth defeated and killed Duncan I’s father Crinan at Dunkeld.
For 14 years, Macbeth seems to have ruled equably, imposing law and order and encouraging Christianity. In 1050, he is known to have travelled to Rome for a papal jubilee. He was also a brave leader and made successful forays over the border into Northumbria, England.
In 1054, Macbeth was challenged by Siward, Earl of Northumbria, who was attempting to return Duncan’s son Malcolm Canmore, who was his nephew, to the throne. In August 1057, Macbeth was killed at the Battle OTD by Malcolm Canmore who later became Malcolm III, Macbeth's Stone, a large boulder at the site, is said to mark the spot where Macbeth was mortally wounded. as seen in the pic.
You can find a full biography on this relatively overlooked King here

“The bulrush has an amazing high-volume structure,” says Finlay Duncan, a co-founder of Saltyco. “Its seed heads can expand about 300 times in size. It has these umbrella-like structures that mimic the natural structure of goosedown in terms of providing that nice lofty, fluffy feeling.”
For farmers on lowland peat in the north-west (UK), it is hoped the trial could provide an alternative source of income while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The chosen site in Greater Manchester was drained for agriculture more than 50 years ago, something that will be reversed next year to plant the bulrushes. This could save 2,800 tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2050 and boost biodiversity, according to the Wildlife Trust.

A little sneak peak at the first chapter of my fanfic
The path Duncan was treading was filled with rocks and glowing gems, the ground was covered in mist. The path winding and twisting, the environment becoming more and more distorted and eerie. It always leads him to the same end.
To a castle that was made from death. People all around were hanged. Yet none of this scared Duncan, he kept that blank expression on his face as he walked the rocky bejeweled path, leading him to an arena and a throne room all in one.
There sat a large beast, with coal for skin, and horns that are like the devils. He held a large jagged sword in one of his hands. The beast rises from his throne made of bones and walks down a set of steps, its left eye bursting into a blue flame. Once at the bottom of the steps, the beast stood in place, towering over Duncan. He reaches his hand out to him, and Duncan does the same.
The beast pulls Duncan into an embrace, his sword dissipating in a blue mist as he wraps his arms around Duncan, who feels his life being drained away. Despite this, he felt at peace. It felt so comforting in these arms.
“Good Morning Arcadia Oaks!”

Shoot day 1 - One More Day
Prior to this shoot, Finlay explained to us that there was going to be a very specific set up for the prep day. The crew was going to be split into two groups - camera, and production design - each to be supervised by Finlay or our AD for the day, Vanessa. My team's job was to dress the set to save time for the next day. Prior to this, I showed India and Vanessa my plan for dressing the set, so that set up went as smooth as possible, and everyone knew what they were doing.
As soon as we arrived, we got clearance to clean the room and get as much dust and rubble out of the room as possible to ensure safety for all of the crew and cast.
the best production design team
Because the bunker is such a big space, and the distance between the set and the green room was huge, I was given a radio as head of department for my team so that I received any crucial information from Finlay (producer), Vanessa (1st AD), and Robbie (Script Supervisor). This was not only fun, but also helped me massively learn how to use a walkie-talkie for my other project that I am producing.
As soon as the room was clear, I got started dressing the set. My priority for today was ensuring the walls were covered the way we wanted it to be, so that tomorrow we can focus on blocking and little prop details. Finlay gave us 2 1/2 hours for this, and I was certain that we could complete it in this time. The main worry I had was the placement of the fabric, since I hadn't really figured out a way I thought looked good and made sense for the narrative.
I started covering the right side of the wall with large pieces of the Financial Times newspaper as the text is incredibly small, and it would make sense for the characters to use this as a base for their insulation. I then started tearing up other newspapers to layer over the top, ensuring that the notes that India and I prepared were in the front. I knew that there were not going to be any close ups of the wall - for both narrative and copyright reasons - however I wanted to include as much detail as possible no matter how small, to also show the efforts that my team and I put in to make the space look lived in. Finally, I took the science magazine and isolated the very general headlines about the state of the world and pinned those up - to indicate the point in time and the state that our characters are in right now. I knew that John's side of the wall was going to be more full and dense than Cam's, and I wanted to add a map - to show which areas around them had been "hit" by the apocalypse. Because I knew this map wasn't going to be shown in detail, I had a bit of fun with it. The whole crew and I put pins and crosses in places in Scotland that we all had connections to. I also felt that the space around the maps was quite bare, so I moved some of the science magazine headlines around the map and it really brought it to life more. Another bit of fun we had was filling in one of the crossword with all the names of the crew members to pay homage to everyone's hard work :)
wall details
After I finished with the wall, I moved into the floor space. I had collected two sleeping bags - ensuring to make space for the third, which is only available for the second day. I had previously discussed placement for the main props with Alfie prior to the shoot, and we drew out a very rough floor plan, where he showed me the actor's movements and blocking so that I don't place any props in the way of their path. I also asked our gaffer, Duncan, for the lighting plan so that I don't put any props in the way of the lights, flags of cameras.
rough floor plan and lighting plans from Duncan
I had a big plant pot, which I had planned to place the chess set on, however Duncan and I set out a really cool lay out with the *fake!!* candles and the lantern, which I thought worked even better!! I then had to improvise to find an interesting way to place the chessboard, as I didn't like that there were barely any levels on the set - everything was on one flat surface apart from the lights on the plant pot. I had the idea of using 4 cans placed under each corner of the chessboard to hold it up and it worked perfectly!!
floor set up
I enlisted the help of Alfie (director), to make some creative decisions on the fabric. I had the idea of making a "tent" on John's side of the room - almost as if he had made this with Sarah when she was still around, with the children's drawings scattered around the wall, above her sleeping bag. For this, I used the smaller grey sheet, which I had stepped on a bit on the dusty floor to make it a bit more worn. I used pins to pin them up, and placed the children's drawings in and around it. I did think it was a bit empty and the children's drawings were quite hidden, so I talked to Sophie (DOP) and Duncan about possibly having another practical light on that side of the room. They agreed as it gave more dimension to that side of the room, so I added some fairy lights under the tent. I am really really happy with this part of the room in particular, and I am quite proud of myself for being able to improvise in such an innovative way.
before and after we installed the practical lights
For the other side of the room, I wanted to show that Cam has a much less emotional relationship with the world and the people around him, so I wanted to make it as empty as possible. Alfie and I agreed that if we pinned the green cloth from near the ceiling down and ripped it in the middle, it would create a doorway to his "hole" of a home - which is much more desolate and less personable than John's side. I used the same technique of stepping on the fabric to make it more worn. We also added some random cut outs of faces on Cam's side which made it much less personal and wholesome to John's side of the room. I am really happy with the two personalities I have created in this room alone and I think it reflects the story really well.
Cam's side of the room
Final touches and notes were made from Alfie when I asked for a check towards the end of the day and I'm making sure to collect these things for tomorrow:
more newspaper on the walls
cans to be scattered either more haphazardly or methodically (i.e. pyramid)
finishing touches to the chess set
I had to much fun today bringing this set to life, I am so excited for what tomorrow will bring!!

His marriage to Kenneth III's granddaughter Gruoch strengthened his claim to the throne. In 1045, Macbeth defeated and killed Duncan I's father Crinan at Dunkeld.
For 14 years, Macbeth seems to have ruled equably, imposing law and order and encouraging Christianity. In 1050, he is known to have travelled to Rome for a papal jubilee. He was also a brave leader and made successful forays over the border into Northumbria, England.
In 1054, Macbeth was challenged by Siward, Earl of Northumbria, who was attempting to return Duncan's son Malcolm Canmore, who was his nephew, to the throne. In August 1057, Macbeth was killed at the Battle of Lumphanan in Aberdeenshire by Malcolm Canmore who later became Malcolm III.
