Mental Health and Substance Use: Two Sides of the Same Coin | Solh Wellness
There is no denying the link between addiction and mental health. Given that they are frequently connected, one may lead to the other. People who suffer from mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for example, are more likely to use drugs or alcohol as a form of self-medication. Additionally, people who battle drug or alcohol addiction are more likely to experience mental health problems.
For many reasons, addiction and mental health are intertwined. Here are a few examples:
Self-Medication: Individuals with mental health issues may turn to drugs or alcohol to unwind or to relieve uncomfortable symptoms. Drugs and alcohol have the ability to mask or momentarily ease emotional pain, anxiety, or melancholy. Self-medication, however, has the potential to begin an addiction and dependence cycle.
Dual diagnosis: Many people who struggle with addiction also struggle with mental health issues, or they have a dual diagnosis. A dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder refers to this situation. While the presence of a mental illness may increase the likelihood of substance addiction, it can also cause or exacerbate the symptoms of a mental disorder.
Neurochemical Imbalances: Addiction and mental health problems can both result in alterations in the neurotransmitter activity and chemistry of the brain. Serotonin, dopamine, and GABA neurotransmitter imbalances have been related to mental diseases such depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Substance addiction can exacerbate these neurochemical alterations that impact mental health issues.
Genetic predisposition: Data show that there is an inherited propensity to addiction and mental health problems. Certain genes and genetic variations may raise a person's propensity for substance misuse and mental diseases. An delicate interplay of hereditary and environmental factors controls the complex link between mental health and addiction.
Trauma and stress: Negative experiences during childhood, ongoing stress, or traumatic events can substantially impair mental health and increase the likelihood of addiction. Some people use medications to manage ongoing stress, eliminate unwanted memories, or minimise emotional discomfort. But doing so could lead to a damaging addiction cycle and worsening mental health results.
Social and environmental factors: These components have an effect on how mental health and addiction are related. Peer pressure, cultural norms, drug accessibility, and socioeconomic circumstances are all mentioned. The likelihood that someone will experience mental health problems and substance use disorders may be impacted by these outside influences.
Conclusion
Mental health and substance misuse are closely related. They frequently go together, thus one can lead to the other. You do not have to experience this alone because there are effective remedies available.
You can track your development with the aid of the different self-help options Solh Wellness offers. There are many therapists in this area who focus in treating addiction. You may relax knowing you'll get all the assistance you require. We are available to you.

Ontario tabled a bill Monday that aims to shutter 10 supervised consumption sites the government deems too close to schools and daycares.
The bill, if passed by Premier Doug Ford's majority Progressive Conservative government, would also require municipalities to get the health minister's approval to apply for an exemption from the federal government to launch new supervised consumption sites.
Health Minister Sylvia Jones said there is no situation in which she would approve a new one anywhere in the province.
"I want to be very clear, there will be no further safe injection sites in the province of Ontario under our government," Jones said at a news conference about the bill. [...]
Ontario is shifting away from harm reduction to an abstinence-based model and it intends to launch 19 new "homelessness and addiction recovery treatment hubs" — or HART hubs, as the province calls them — plus 375 highly supportive housing units at a planned cost of $378 million.

Can we talk about how psychiatry has a pattern of using treatments for mental illnesses and disorders that cause brain damage and then labeling the direct effects of that damage as "healing"
#antipsychiatry#antipsych#medical abuse#anti psych#text#my stuff#examples include: ECT/electroconvulsive therapy 'rewiring the brain' being seen as positive/healing despite causing memory problems#and other issues#but when disorders like depression rewire your brain it's labeled as brain damage. lmao#insulin shock treatment and lobotomies#forcibly drugging people until they have actual neurological damage#antipsychotics decreasing grey matter in patients who take them long term#mental health treatment being incredibly traumatic by nature#btw trauma can literally give you brain damage#and so on

How Drugs Affect the Brain
Drugs affect the brain by altering its normal communication processes. They disrupt neurotransmitter activity, either mimicking natural chemicals to overstimulate reward pathways or blocking normal signaling. This leads to temporary euphoria, but over time, it can cause changes in brain structure and function, impairing memory, decision-making, and self-control. Prolonged use may lead to addiction, as the brain becomes dependent on the drug to maintain balance, further damaging mental and physical health.

Drug Addiction: Signs, Symptoms, and Withdrawal Management | Solh Wellness
Substance use disorder, often known as drug addiction, is a chronic condition characterised by compulsive substance use, even when doing so has negative consequences. It is a challenging brain condition that affects behaviour, cognition, and daily activities.
The following list includes typical traits of drug addiction:
Excessive substance-seeking: Overly wanting substances results in a strong drive to obtain and use them, frequently prioritising drug use over other important aspects of their lives.
Lack of regulation: Despite being aware of the risks associated with their drug use, users find it difficult to control or limit their usage.
Physical dependence: Drug abuse that lasts a long time might make the body physiologically reliant on the drug in order for it to operate normally. Withdrawal symptoms could appear if drug use is abruptly discontinued or reduced.
Tolerance: The body may grow accustomed to a medicine after frequent usage, requiring higher dosages to have the same effects. This can feed the cycle of increasing drug use.
Adverse effects: Consistent drug use can result in a range of undesirable outcomes, including subpar employment or academic performance, tumultuous interpersonal relationships, money problems, and legal issues.
The psychological alterations: The motivational and reward systems of the brain can be profoundly impacted by drug or alcohol abuse, which also changes the brain's chemistry and functioning. There may be psychological changes as a result of this. This could result in cravings, poor choices, and a reduced ability to enjoy other activities.
Drug addiction can be affected by a variety of substances, including alcohol, illicit drugs, prescription drugs, and others. It is important to underline that substance misuse is a problem that can be treated and that recovery is possible with the correct therapies, including behavioural therapy, medications, and support systems.
Early Symptoms of Drug Dependence
Strong cravings or a persistent need to use the substance are examples of severe urges.
It is impossible to restrict drug usage despite its harmful effects when there is no supervision.
Neglected responsibilities: Ignoring obligations due to drug use in work, school, or elsewhere.
Public abstinence is the act of choosing to use drugs in public rather than interacting with family, friends, or other people in similar situations.
The need for larger pharmaceutical dosages to get the desired effects is known as tolerance.
When attempting to cut back or quit using drugs, withdrawal symptoms can manifest as both mental and physical symptoms.
Neglecting or failing to take into account the impact of drug usage on one's health results in continued use despite health issues.
making fruitless attempts to stop using drugs or cut back on their use
Participating in these practises to obtain or consume drugs is risky or unsafe.
Having trouble paying bills or resorting to illegal means of collecting money in order to buy drugs due to financial restrictions
Withdrawal symptoms happen when a person quits using a substance abruptly or drastically reduces their dosage. Both psychological and physical characteristics might be seen as withdrawal symptoms. The body experiences these symptoms as it attempts to adjust to life without the chemical on which it has become addicted.
Depending on the substance used and the person's history of drug usage, withdrawal symptoms might vary substantially. Along with psychological symptoms like concern, anger, despair, and cravings, mild to severe withdrawal symptoms can also include physical symptoms like nausea, sweating, trembling, and aches. The severity and length of withdrawal may vary depending on the substance used, how frequently and for how long it was used, as well as user variables including overall health and inherent vulnerability.
Understanding of Withdrawal
A person begins to experience physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms when they get reliant on a substance. People may experience withdrawal in many ways, depending on the substance used, how frequently and how long it was used, as well as other personal factors. The list of withdrawal symptoms that follows is typical:
Physical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, tremors, sweating, trembling, changes in sleeping or eating patterns, and intense muscle pain.
Anxiety, impatience, agitation, mood swings, depression, restlessness, and difficulty focusing are a few examples of psychological symptoms.
A strong desire to use the drug again to ease withdrawal symptoms.
Insomnia or inconsistent sleeping patterns.
Fatigue or a lack of power.
The capacity for pain is rising.
Hallucinations or delusions may accompany influenza symptoms including a fever, chills, or nasal congestion.
Sometimes the physically and mentally exhausting withdrawal symptoms can be severe or even life-threatening. It is crucial to manage drug withdrawal under the supervision of medical professionals because doing so will ensure safety and provide adequate support.
Conclusion
A rigorous treatment programme and seeking professional assistance greatly boost the likelihood of beating drug addiction. Writing, journaling, and access to therapists and medical professionals are among the resources available in the Solh Wellness app for managing mental health. An important thing about me is that I fully support people who use substances, people in recovery, people who use in moderation, people who’ve never used, and none of those things contradict each other.
I’m very much pro-harm reduction and always will be. I support meeting people wherever they’re at, I support people having access to knowledge they need in order to make informed decisions around their use. I support people having access to safe means to use.
And more than anything, I filly support people in active use, including (especially) problematic use. I want my community to be safe. I don’t believe that offering support to people in active use is inherently enabling. I know that the only thing Narcan/Naloxone enables is breathing.
I’ve lost too many loved ones to sit on the sidelines and hope they’ll do what’s needed to keep themselves safe. The bare minimum I can do is emotionally support my community. I need harm reduction, we all do.

mushroom was lucky enough to experience relative freedom in their life. Their abusers weren't obsessed with controlling every aspect of their life, but instead enjoyed taking from them at their leisure, and pretending they didn't exist until they needed something.
She was merely a tool they could pick up, use, then toss back into the toolbox, not even caring if the box lid was locked or not because they assumed that she was reliant enough on them to know she had nowhere else to stay but with them.
And to be fair, she literally didn't. She became a vagrant when she ran, not knowing whether she'd be dead by the end of each day. Fortunatley, you learn a thing or two about taking care of yourself when your parents were always too busy nodding off to the drugs you had to buy with money you stole from someone ODing a few corners down.
Accidentally stepped in glass shards on the road? No problem, they did that all the time when Dad was done throwing bottles around the house. Tripped on a pothole and dislocated their wrist falling down? Easy fix, their mom used to shake their arm so much the snapping motion they use to reset it was practically muscle memory.
Yeah, nothing they encountered was ever so bad that they felt they needed to return to that life.
#drugs tw#abuse tw#lastintheserverbox#No doubt if they had gotten the parry treatment by a stoat equivalent they would have turned out VERY similar

Fics where Andrew is still fully andrew-y without him going through the trauma of the system or repeated sexual assaults rub me the wrong way because they act like he's not the product of his experiences and that he never had a chance of a typical childhood without the abuse
#like when hes immediately adopted by bee#he can still have his core personality traits but him shutting down emotionally as he grows is the true tragedy of his treatment#same with aaron#would he be the same without the drugs and abuse from Tilda#aftg#andrew minyard#aaron minyard#all for the game
