How Are Diamonds Mined?
Diamonds, cherished for their brilliance and rarity, have captivated humanity for centuries. But have you ever wondered how these precious gems make their journey from deep within the Earth to sparkling on a piece of jewellery? The process of diamond mining is both fascinating and complex, involving various methods depending on the location and type of diamond deposits. Here’s a detailed look at how diamonds are mined.

Understanding Diamond Formation
Before delving into mining methods, it’s essential to understand where diamonds come from. Diamonds form under intense heat and pressure deep within the Earth’s mantle, over billions of years. They are then carried closer to the surface by volcanic eruptions, encased in a type of rock called kimberlite. These eruptions create pipes or deposits, which are the primary sources for mining diamonds.
Types of Diamond Deposits
Diamonds are typically found in two types of deposits:
Primary Deposits: These are kimberlite or lamproite pipes where diamonds are found in their original volcanic source.
Secondary Deposits: Diamonds eroded from primary deposits and transported by water or wind, accumulating in riverbeds, beaches, or alluvial plains.
Diamond Mining Methods
The method used to mine diamonds depends on the type of deposit and the location. The primary mining techniques include:
Open-Pit Mining
This is the most common method for mining diamonds from kimberlite pipes. It involves:
Removing layers of soil and rock to expose the kimberlite.
Using heavy machinery to extract the ore from the open pit.
Crushing the ore to separate diamonds from the surrounding material.
Open-pit mining is efficient but can have a significant environmental impact due to land disruption.
Underground Mining
When kimberlite pipes extend deep into the Earth, underground mining is employed. This method includes:
Digging vertical shafts and horizontal tunnels to reach the ore.
Using controlled blasting to break up the kimberlite.
Transporting the ore to the surface for processing.
Underground mining is more labor-intensive and expensive but minimizes surface disruption.
Alluvial Mining
This method is used for secondary deposits and involves:
Extracting diamonds from riverbeds, beaches, or alluvial plains.
Washing and screening the sediment to separate diamonds from other materials.
Alluvial mining is less invasive and often done on a smaller scale, making it popular in regions where primary deposits are inaccessible.
Marine Mining
Marine mining targets diamond deposits found beneath the ocean floor. This advanced method involves:
Deploying specialized ships equipped with underwater dredging systems.
Using remote-controlled equipment to extract diamonds from the seabed.
Marine mining is highly expensive but yields significant results in certain regions, such as off the coast of Namibia.
Diamond Processing and Sorting
After extraction, the mined ore undergoes processing to separate diamonds from other materials. The steps include:
Crushing: Breaking down the ore into smaller pieces.
Dense Media Separation (DMS): Using a liquid medium to isolate diamonds based on density.
X-Ray Sorting: Detecting diamonds’ unique ability to fluoresce under X-rays.
Hand Sorting: Inspecting and grading diamonds by hand to ensure quality.
Ethical and Sustainable Mining
Modern diamond mining faces increasing scrutiny regarding its environmental and social impacts. Many companies now adhere to ethical mining practices, ensuring:
Compliance with labor laws and fair wages for workers.
Minimization of environmental damage through reclamation and restoration projects.
Certification through initiatives like the Kimberley Process to prevent the trade of conflict diamonds.
The Journey from Mine to Market
Once sorted and graded, diamonds are sent to cutting and polishing facilities to enhance their brilliance. From there, they are sold to wholesalers, retailers, and eventually find their way to consumers.
Conclusion
The process of mining diamonds is a combination of advanced technology, skilled labor, and environmental considerations. Whether mined from deep within the Earth or beneath the ocean floor, each diamond’s journey is a testament to its value and rarity. Understanding this process adds a deeper appreciation for these remarkable gems that have captured human fascination for centuries.

Severance and Alchemy
So in my post about names and their meanings in Severance, I mentioned making a seperate post about alchemy and how it relates to the show. Stay with me, because it starts off with some basic introduction and then comes the theorizing.
Let's get into it! Spoilers ahead, obviously.
The "great work" (l. magnum opus) of alchemy was to create the philosopher's stone, an object believed to be able to do several amazing things.
The most commonly mentioned properties are the ability to transmute base metals into gold or silver, and the ability to heal all forms of illness and prolong the life of any person who consumes a small part of the philosopher's stone diluted in wine. Other mentioned properties include: creation of perpetually burning lamps, transmutation of common crystals into precious stones and diamonds, reviving of dead plants, creation of flexible or malleable glass, and the creation of a clone or homunculus.
- The Wikipedia entry for the philosopher's stone (emphasis mine)
If this is bringing to your mind the "remedium hominibus" (e. a cure for mankind) on the licence plates in Kier PE, then we are on the same page. The homunculus thing also reminds me of those doubles in Woe's Hollow.
Okay so! Basically the process of creating the stone involves three or four stages depending on interpretations. They are all associated with a colour.
nigredo, the blackening or melanosis
albedo, the whitening or leucosis
citrinitas, the yellowing or xanthosis
rubedo, the reddening, purpling, or iosis
If the stages are only three instead of four, as they often are, then the yellow stage is seen as only a bridge between white and red.
If season 3 has a red liquid in the opening sequence and a red background for the closing credits I'm going to lose my shit.
It's difficult to find any exact directions for the creation of the stone except that it involves all four classical elements, especially fire and water, and that it requires starting with the prima materia (e. first matter). This is an undefined material, but essentially some sort of a clean slate that can be molded (mercury seems to have been popular). From there the prima materia needs to be put through the three or four stages, often split into sub-stages. There are also two supposed ways to approach the magnum opus, the dry path and the wet path. (Iirc the dry path is the one that is quicker and more volatile.)
The stone is also somewhat synonymous with aether.
The word aether has many meanings and interpretations, but it might remind Severance fans of where Kier and Imogene met: when they were both working in an ether factory. That factory was probably producing diethyl ether, a chemical solvent. (Which sounds a bit like the name Dieter, incidentally.)
But aether refers to a fifth classical element on top of water, fire, earth and air. It is also called quintessence (the fifth essence). In alchemy, aether was thought of as pure and heavenly, and able to cure any ailment. In physics, however, it was proposed as the medium through which light was able to travel, much like sound moves through air. In this context it was referred to as luminiferous aether. (Luminiferous ➜ Lumon?)
I'm stuck on these four elements as compared to the four tempers (now that woe has been so firmly connected with water) and the four stages of the magnum opus process. The creation of this pure element after putting it through the four stages really rhymes with the Keir Eagan mythology of taming the four tempers to become a perfect and pure person.
I know that death is near upon me, because people have begun to ask what I see as my life’s great achievement. They wish to know how they should remember me as I rot. In my life, I have identified four components, which I call tempers, from which are derived every human soul. Woe. Frolic. Dread. Malice. Each man’s character is defined by the precise ratio that resides in him. I walked into the cave of my own mind, and there I tamed them. Should you tame the tempers as I did mine, then the world shall become but your appendage. It is this great and consecrated power that I hope to pass on to all of you, my children.
- Kier Eagan recording, as heard in the Perpetuity wing (emphasis mine)
I hope we get to hear the rest of the fourth appendix and how Keir encountered Frolic, Dread and Malice. I'd guess they're air, earth and fire, respectively.
(Sidenote: to me the "cave of my own mind" bit all but confirms the theory that Dieter was not a literal twin but an aspect of Kier that he was ashamed of. But I digress!)
I'm also thinking about Macrodata Refinement and how there are four categories of numbers, but five bins to sort them into. Each bin has a subfolder labeled WO, FC, DR and MA, clearly corresponding with the tempers. But why the five folders? How do you determine which folder a particular set of numbers belongs to? This still remains a mystery but I'm having Thoughts about quintessence.
I can't avoid connecting these to my name post and the many many references to water, fire, earth and light that pop up in the character names in Severance. But I really keep coming back to Gemma, and to Cold Harbor. Gemma, meaning precious stone. (And Peter meaning stone, too. Dry vs wet path, perhaps?)
Do I think Lumon is trying to literally make Gemma into the philosopher's stone? Probably not! But I don't need to tell you, a person reading a theory about Severance on tunglr.hell, that the show has a looming theme of death and rebirth, and theories abound of Kier and the Eagans "living on" or coming back somehow (the revolving, the intangible board of Lumon, et.c.). We know Cold Harbor is important, that it's connected to Gemma, and that Mark needs to be the one to complete it. If Gemma is supposed to become a metaphorical philosopher's stone (created from the prima materia of death/braindeath, or that of a freshly severed person) that could potentially bring Kier back to life and cure mankind of all ailments, that'd be pretty fascinating. Exploitative as fuck though, and if the black ➜ white/yellow ➜ red liquid theme holds will undoubtedly require her literal blood.
I'm interested in hearing your takes on this, and if this makes any sense lmao. I can't always tell what's me doing literary analysis and what's actual foreshadowing or purposeful worldbuilding. Death of the author and all that. Also there's a whole Carl Jung psychology aspect that I could get into here that feels relevant but this post is already wayyy too long.

The Mazarin Stone
First published in 1921, this was an adaptation of a one-act play Doyle wrote called The Crown Diamond: An Evening with Sherlock Holmes that ran in London that same year and featured Sebastian Moran.
It is also written in the third person, rare for a Holmes story.
A gasogene was a two-globed late Victorian device for producing sparkling water or other such carbonated beverages; the liquid was placed in the bottom and a mixture of tartaric acid and bi-carbonate of soda at the top. You tipped it slightly to start the process going. They had a habit of exploding under pressure, so were in a wire or wicker mesh to stop glass flying around if they did.
Cardinal Mazarin (1602-1661) was Chief Minister to Louis XIII and XIV from 1642 until his death. Succeeding Cardinal Richelieu of The Three Musketeers fame, he proved a hugely effective diplomat, playing a key role in the Treaty of Westphalia of 1648, whose principles of national sovereignty remain key to modern international relations.
He acquired a massive art, literature and jewel collection as well, leaving eighteen diamonds called "the Mazarins" to Louis XIV on his death.
Air guns with a pellet discharge of under 12ft/lb are today legal to own in the UK without a licence - anything over that is legally a firearm and regulated as such i.e. licences are needed.
A gudgeon is one of many small bottom-dwelling fish.
Algeria had been gradually conquered by France between 1830 and 1903, become an integral part of the country; something most colonies did not have happen to them. It also gained a very large number of European settlers.
"Train-de-luxe" referred to a train exclusively made up of CIWL carriages, all of which were pretty luxurious with the obvious exception of the dedicated luggage vans. The Orient Express was one such train for much of its history.
"It's a fair cop" is a British slang expression meaning "it was wrong and you caught me fairly".

Axel and Freya head cannons.
Axel and Freya got kittens when they were younger and named them hearts and diamond.

Axel and Freya always share their ice creams, they each have two favourite flavours and they both get their favourite flavour and swap ice creams halfway through.

Freya and Axel are both very protective of each other and there have been countless times where they get into fights to protect each other.

Freya has always treated Axel like her baby even though they are only six months apart. Freya use to push Axel around the arena in her dolls pram and fed her little snacks she made and made her drink from a a baby bottle. This also progressed to later in life when Freya got her licence and Axel was driven around every where because she is the ultimate passenger princess.

For a very long time Freya has a severe aversion to touch and had to wear gloves all the time. So Axel who hates shopping makes it her mission to go and buy Freya as many different styles, colours and types of gloves for Freya. Axel who has a small affinity for sewing and embroidery put little A’s on every pair of gloves for her.

Freya doesn’t like touch at all and Axel has always been very understanding of this and has always made a conscious effort not to not to have skin to skin contact with her without her permission. When in large crowds Axel makes sure to keep people away and even goes so far as to push people who get to close to touching Freya away. However it’s rare they are in crowds because they often go at night.

The two girls always have been able to understand each other really easily from very young ages, when they grew older it evolved into head gestures only they knew. This translated onto the ice and after many years of playing together they were able to just know what the other person was going to do leading them to win multiple championships.

It’s well established that Axel is a very chaotic person and that Freya is the more level headed of the two. However Freya would never let her best friend do something alone.

Freya always carries around snacks in her purse and eats them at random times because she knows if she eats Axel will have something too.

Freya is 100% the cook between the two, because Axel can’t cook for her life.
