Me telling blakitu how, even tho it is a really important part of the story, the whole nie mingjue and jin guangyao story arc was difficult to go through because i found them annoying
Them telling me they skipped this part and was not sure what happened during it
It was my time to rent : big bro General of the army being man, being soldier and making his anger issues the problem of everyone. He bullies jgy a lot and wants him dead. Lil bro huaisang is not viril and that's not acceptable. He HAS to destroy what makes his brother's personnality and force him to become an alpha man grrrr.............. but then jgy got fed up and instead of serving him soup in a plate with a fork, he dedided to kill him softly (it was not, it was violent) with his (demonic) song
But at the end of the day, their story is still peak tragedy

Ranking mxtx couples by whether or not I think they'd be good parents
(I'm 90% sure I'm forgetting someone)
Yep, next question (S)-
Wangxian: tried and tested good dads. I wish them luck with the whole “trying to get wwx pregnant” thing
They have some shit to work through, but after that I think they'd be fine (A)-
Ling Wen/ Bai Jin: if we're just going off the original publication, I would put them in a much lower tier, but since the revised edition added that thing about them raising orphans together and said orphans turning out alright before unfortunate circumstances, I'm putting them up here. I think they'll be alright once they work through the miscommunication
Xiao Xingchen/ Song Lan: They obviously have a lot of trauma they're working through, but I'd like to think they and A-Qing will be a loving family in the long run
One of them would be a good parent, the other wouldn't be a bad parent (B)-
Jiang Yanli/ Jin Zixuan: there's no canon reason for me putting them this low. Jin Zixuan just gives off a mediocre parent vibe to me (and we all know Jiang Yanli is the best)
Yushipei: Yushi Huang has good mom energy, and Pei Ming has been shown to be a not terrible mentor. I'd want the misogyny fully beaten out of him with a mace before I'd think he should have kids of his own though
Lang Qianqiu/ Little Guy: at the very least, they're making sure Guzi is fed, clothed, washed, vaccinated, and has access to education. Neither of them know what they're doing, but I think Little Guy is good at faking it. I wish them luck in their upcoming custody battle
You know what, surprise me/ I'll hear you out (C)-
Bingqiu: My first instinct is “no, do not bring kids into this,” but then I remembered tharnShen Qingqiu has a surprisingly decent track record? Like, Ning Yingying and Ming Fan both turned out a lot more health than they did in the original novel, and though I wouldn't call him in a good place, Binghe is doing a lot better than Bingge. The wild card for me here is Luo Binghe because I have no idea how he'd be with kids
Quanyin: Yin Yu had a decent track record until he was pushed into snapping. I think rn, he needs a couple centuries of being a babygirl before he's ready to parent again. No idea how Quan Yizhen would do though
Born to “dual income, no kids, rich uncles/aunts” (D)-
Fengqing: Feng Xin is canonically a bad dad. I know he's working on it, but it is what it is. Mu Qing has been shown to be decent with kids, but I think he’d have a melt down if he had to deal with the mess constantly.
Hualian: I mean, Xie Lian has raised three kids at this point and one of them became a god, another became state preceptor and then sorta complicit in a genocide, and one became god AND committed genocide + he babysat a ghost king for months and didn't even realize that's what he was because it was a miracle if he remembered to feed him… so, a mixed bag. Hua Cheng may be schrodinger’s child hater, but I'm intrigued by the idea of him raising kids just because I want to know how his own childhood would influence his parenting abilities. They should probably just stick to babysitting for now though
Mingling: Liu Mingyan is too busy writing gay porn to be dealing with kids, and I just can't imagine Sha Hualing as a mom
Please don't bring a kid into this mess (F)-
Beefleaf: Do I need to explain this one?
Mobeishang: Shang Qinghua should not be put in any position where he has to teach someone about consent (Binghe’s early attempts at flirting being a prime example of why that's a bad idea). I also think Mobei Jun is still working on the whole “why hitting people is not cool” thing.
QiJiu: I think the original timeline is a prime example of how they're just not in a place to be raising kids
Jun Wu/ Mei Nianqing: Xie Lian would like a refund on his adopted father figures. They had one kid and he only made it to age 20 because he was cursed to not die

Introducing: The Which MXTX Character Was/Would Be Most Insufferable Online Tournament Bracket
Tumblr media
Beginning the evening of August 23rd, 2024 (USA time), I’ll be running a tournament via tumblr polls to determine once and for all which Mo Xiang Tong Xiu web novel character was or would be most insufferable if given access to the internet.
FAQ:
Why this poll theme?
I thought it would be fun to run another big MXTX tournament bracket, since the bugpoll last year was a blast, and this was the funniest theme I could manage to think of.
Why isn't Shen Yuan/Shen Qingqiu in the bracket?
Given what we know about our dear Peerless Cucumber, I fear an SQQ sweep would be a foregone conclusion if I included him. Therefore, after the bracket finds a winner, I'll hold a bonus round and pit the winner against Shen Yuan to determine the true most internet-insufferable character.
What is wrong with you?
Yeah.
My goal is to hold one round per day every day for a week, but I'm contending with a full-time work schedule, so things may get slightly more stretched out than that. I'll also be splitting the first round into Round 1 Part 1 (the left side of the bracket) and Round 1 Part 2 (the right side of the bracket) to avoid spamming people's dashes with 32 separate polls in one day.
If you’d like to either search for or blacklist posts related to this event, all of mine will be tagged with “MXTX insufferapoll.”

"In historical context though-"
This book has potatoes and chilis in supply and demand when these were not traded until the late 15th century... and not used for cuisine and a foods crop cultivator in China well into the 17th and 18th century almost 200 years later. Folding fans that are seen abundantly were not popularized until the 13th century. Taoism was at its largest during the Warring States period of 450 BCE–c. 300 BCE with the epigram of Tao Te Ching. Confucianism became the abundant practice as of 206 BCE to 220 BCE with the authoring of The Analects. It uses fabricated province names for real world Chinese provinces that are relegated to a simple five, when there are of 22 (claimed) and have been the most stable to survive since the Yuan dynasty 1271-1368. Idioms used vary through the centuries and are still a staple of modern day vernacular. The version of futou Jin Guangyao alone wears was a wushamao (乌纱帽), used in the Ming dynasty 1368-1398. Futou was made a part of ministerial and court attire during the reign of Emperor Wu 560 BCE.
The author has said it has no standing Imperial Dynasty it takes place in and has borrowed aesthetics from the Han, Wei-Jin, Song, Tang, Ming and even Qing. All of which had seen several turns of dynasty from Han to Mongol to Han divine rulings. So no, there is no historical context to take in regard when it comes to Madam Yu's overt abuse, to Jiang Cheng's abuse, the clan's classisms and hypocrisy.
It was written in an alternate fantasy of China without this context of real world history and through the lens of modernity of its author. Do not use a history that does not pertain to a novel that is not has not and was never called historical.

assigning MDSZ characters TCGF gods (and one calamity) they'd worship
I think the BIGGEST disclaimer I need to put out before this post is that the MDSZ characters would not know these gods personally. Thus, the perspectives I am giving them on the gods are what I think someone unacquainted would think if they heard the myths and legends about the gods, not what they're actually like.
I gave most sects a major martial god to worship, because I think they would. Note that I was going purely off of vibes, but am aware that in canon martial gods are worshipped based off geographic location.
Some characters may get more than one god.
Wei Wuxian: Worships martial gods (Mu Qing in this case) alongside Lotus Pier once adopted into it but never really resonates. As the Yiling Laozu, he worships Crimson Rain Sought Flower, as some mortals canonically do, but never asks for anything from him. The worship is moreso a form of following comforting rituals he once did as a child, and he's well aware he has nothing good to offer a rich ghost king while running the Burial Mounds. He sees Crimson Rain as an outcast much like himself, considering Crimson Rain's relations with the Heavens. I think if he had to pick a martial god, he'd pick Quan Yizhen, because he respects Quan Yizhen's refusal of the status quo.
I get more into Lotus Pier as a whole worshipping Shi Wudu for Jiang Cheng's answer, but I do think Wei Wuxian once got in a lot of trouble for questioning what kind of god uses his own domain to extort mortals into worshipping him. He does not worship Shi Wudu on his own.
Jiang Cheng: Mu Qing is the obvious answer, and while I do agree, I also think if he ever learned of Xie Lian's story he would resonate a lot with it. Having his home destroyed and having to start over from scratch, I think he'd relate to the god of misfortune who lost his entire kingdom and re ascended multiple times, but he may keep that worship private because he's in far too vulnerable a place when he engages in it. I don't think Xie Lian would mind, I think Xie Lian would appreciate a quieter style of worship.
Additionally, Lotus Pier being on the water, they worship Shi Wudu out of necessity to not get their shit wrecked (part 2), but I think Jiang Cheng quietly resents the Water Master in his own heart because he was aware of how easy it would have been for the Water Master to intervene when Lotus Pier was first destroyed, and he simply did not.
Jin Zixuan: Pei Ming, and this represents his off-screen character growth. As a teenager he focused on Pei Ming as a flashy and well-liked martial god he wanted to emulate. As he grew older, and began to love Jiang Yanli very genuinely, he often prayed to Pei Ming for confidence and to help him woo her.
The Jin clan as a whole worships Pei Ming.
Jin Guangyao: Because the rest of the Jin clan does, Jin Guangyao worships Pei Ming for show. In private, he worships Ling Wen, because I view him both as someone who values education and the way she had to claw herself up in a society that did not respect her because she was a woman.
Being educated was part of what gave Jin Guangyao the social mobility he had, even when Jin Guangshan initially rejected him. He had to be well-spoken and persuasive as well as a physically powerful cultivator.
Nie Huaisang: Ling Wen, 100%. He is not aware of her crimes, as mortals wouldn't know all that, but if he did know he'd only support her even harder. To him, a literature god represents everything he wants to do with his life, but can't because he has vengeance to get and his attempts at dodging clan leader status have failed miserably.
I also think he looks up to her as a powerful figure who didn't need to rely on physical force and might to get to where she is. To him, she represents proof that intelligence and the arts are valuable, too.
As a whole, the Nie clan worships Quan Yizhen, because he shares their obsession with combat and their "no thoughts just fists" attitude towards it.
Nie Mingjue: Quan Yizhen, alongside the rest of the Nie clan, 100%. Mistakenly sees parallels in Yin Yu and Jin Guangyao, because he is not aware of the actual story behind the Brocade Immortal situation. All he knows is that there are a ton of stories about how Quan Yizhen's jealous fake martial brother secretly went behind his back and betrayed him.
I also think there are parallels to Quan Yizhen being controlled by the Brocade Immortal and Nie Mingjue by Jin Guangyao's music, even if the actual contexts are entirely different.
Lan Xichen: Alongside the rest of the Cloud Recesses, Lan Xichen would worship Mu Qing as a martial god who ascended out of cultivation above pure might.
I think a part of Lan Xichen would feel drawn towards the Windmaster, too. I think he admires and to some extent envies her free nature, but he doesn't want to abandon his duties like his father did.
Lan Wangji: Of course also Mu Qing, but he would join Wei Wuxian in his worship as well. I think for Lan Wangji, worship of the gods is heavily about routine. He's the kind of person to thrive off consistency, and worship of the gods is one of many parts of cultivation he's been raised with.
