This Popular New England Dish Has Been Served At Every Presidential Inauguration Since Reagan! "It’s As Boston As Paul Revere."

On January 20, President-elect Donald Trump will again be sworn into office. And when he does, the Queens-born politician will take part in the same ceremonial traditions presidents have taken part in since President George Washington's inauguration in 1789 — including hosting an inauguration meal. And this year, Trump will dine on one slightly newer but still historic dish: Legal Sea Foods' New England Clam Chowder.

The Massachusetts-based company explained that its New England clam chowder has been served at inaugurations since Reagan's 1981 administration, when Legal Sea Foods was chosen to represent the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, fulfilling the president's plan to have a dish representing each of the 50 states. And it's been served at every inauguration using the same recipe since its inception.

“It’s a humbling experience leading such an iconic brand that has represented the city of Boston, the State of Massachusetts and earned national recognition as the quintessential New England Seafood restaurant," chef Matt King, who personally prepares the presidential batch alongside Brian Doyle, the vice president of culinary, shared with Food & Wine. "I personally wake up every day with a sense of responsibility to the thousands of Legal Sea Foods employees, the city, and the state that I love to represent them all with pride and passion for the product we serve.”

As for what the soup accompanied over all these inaugurations, America's Test Kitchen says Reagan's first inaugural luncheon included a California Garden Salad, medallions of chicken piquante with rice pilaf, and asparagus, ending with a strawberry framboise. In 1993, Clinton celebrated his first inauguration with grilled salmon, rosemary chicken, and an apple-cranberry brown Betty, while Obama honored his first inauguration with a lunch consisting of fish stew, duck breast, and molasses sweet potatoes, followed by an apple cinnamon sponge cake. Obama's second inauguration, American Table reported, also featured the chowder, along with lobster tails, bison, and another apple pie.

The only time it almost didn't appear on the menu was at Trump's 2017 inauguration. As the Boston Globe reported, the Legal Sea Foods team hadn't heard from Trump's inauguration staff until the very last minute. “We’re just happy that the tradition continues,” Roger Berkowitz, the then-CEO of the company, shared with The Globe.

And really, the chowder is one seriously decorated soup. The City of Boston Proclaimed January 15 "Chowda Day," making it a "legal" holiday. Each year, the restaurant celebrates it by offering cups of New England Clam Chowder for $1, so you can feel presidential too.

“Legal Sea Foods' New England Clam Chowder is not simply a dish or a food. This is Boston and New England in a Bowl," King added. "It is synonymous with salt air, seaside living, the fishing industry, days at the beach, and snowy New England days. It’s As Boston As Paul Revere."

There is a trait that isn't quite a hustle mentality or a grindset, because it's way more lighthearted and kind of funny. I call it the "always down to make a buck" mentality, something that's often possessed by the archetypal "jack of all trades." These people aren't exhausting themselves or burning themselves out, and they don't have any kind of superiority complex. They tend to quietly, almost accidentally acquire an impressive number of hard and soft skills over the years, and when the opportunity to financially benefit from those skills arises, they get a crazy little gleam in their eye and treat the day almost like a side quest in a video game.

Anyway, my mom periodically picks up cash as someone who is both certified to teach yoga and also licensed to drive 40 ft buses (to name a few of her skills) and neither of these things is her primary source of income.

I've been at my job for 10 years and they almost didn't hire me for it.

I was one of only two applicants. The other guy got it, even though my performance at our initial job was better (ie: wasn't on my phone, actually paid attention to people and the art, even pointed out important details to conservationists).

I complained to the staff assistant because I felt it wasn't fair I was passed over, and also I was pissed and stressed because I was trying to afford rent. Mind you the other guy is a great guy, I really enjoyed working with him. I just felt as though I would be more dedicated to the work.

It turned out another person on this new shift at the time was unreliable, i guess due to military obligations or something. So while I didn't get hired, instead I was given a term appointment to "see how i do". As if I had some reputation of being unreliable or something.

Well 10 years later I'm still here and seen about 4 (technically 5) people come and go including him who didn't even stick around 1 year, and the others i currently work with: one falls asleep on post often and the other is only part time and also occasionally falls asleep.

Yet - I am micromanaged, criticized, and only ever interacted with by my manager if he has something negative to say. The only people in my dept who give me any appreciation are two people I used to work days with. I've also received appreciation from a couple of others in other departments for the work I've done that has helped them. But not my manager.

This place makes me feel insane because I feel like I'm treated like a criminal even though I know all that I have sacrificed for this shit. Nothing I do is ever really appreciated, especially by my manager. I was so discombobulated at one point that I asked HR for my personnel file to see if there was something I was missing, but no. It's entirely clean and just had normal paperwork work from when I applied etc.

I don't get it and I am so ready to give this place and these people the middle finger when I get out.

Btw, security is a joke. I've said it before I'll say it again. It's nonsense and really is just about someone's ego. In 10 years there has never been a real threat to this place, aside from the crappy construction of this place. However, people who work security here are paranoid and just want to control people. Treat me like some kind of puppet for their amusement because they lack any control at home.

You know what real security is? Community. Not HOAs, not cops, not some douchebag in a vest. Neighbors and friends and family and strangers you pass on the street. Trust is real security. Yet I am not trusted in the job I've been at for 10+ years.

Stop making people feel like criminals is the first step. Nobody is a criminal. Crime is an action, not an identity.

i believe everything's 100% gone through, so i'm going to be losing my house and i will have to sell my belongings. does anyone have any advice on how to sell things online? i'd mostly just have my childhood stuff like my webkinz and book collections to give.

I took the semester off school to help with some intense family issues and to prevent going insane I’ve been turning my mom’s house into a native plant habitat. I’ve only been working intensely at it for a little over a month and the impacts are already visible in a wonderful way! I put in a window bird feeder (mostly to entertain my indoor cat) but I now have dozens of birds coming by every day. The native plantings have attracted butterflies, moths and caterpillars that I’ve never seen in such a large number before. I’ve thrown in some non-native herbs to use in the kitchen so whenever you walk around the house there’s a sweet scent of flowers that’s grounded by an earthy rosemary. I even saw a little rat snake by my bedroom window today even though I spent all morning tromping through the yard! I’ve seen people online say that native plantings make a difference, but seeing it for yourself is so rewarding. I paid for a national wildlife federation certification last week so I’m hoping that when I put the sign in front of the house some of our neighbors take an interest and try to emulate the idea!
