“Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought. To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears. To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who control the fool. To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen. To be led by a liar is to ask to be told lies. To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery.” ― Octavia E. Butler

I think as a result of their indecision, general dithering on every possible decision and inability to provide a single sliver of rationale behind the actions they have taken, I personally don't think we can judge Bell's Hells on whether or not their decisions are moral or not. Have they wishy-washily and passively avoided every hard question that could have been asked of them? Yes; but that speaks to a lack of interesting ideas and a lack of curiosity on their collective behalf in dealing with the scenarios set before them. I think if we judge them on anything it is the consequences of their actions (or inaction). Realistically, I reckon (depending on how releasing Predathos goes) they will be treated in a similar way to how someone like Vespin Chloras was treated by history - a damned fool whose actions lead to the annihilation of civilisations, the destruction of millions of lives and as such has been (rightfully!) condemned by Exandrian history as one of its greatest villains. Our softening of our view as a fandom on Vespin comes from his editing of Zerxus' pact to save the world from the rage of the Primordials. I think his actions, typical of the Age of Arcanum, echo Ludinus' fatal ideological folly in assuming that they would lead to prosperity due to a change in the divine structures of Exandria; Bell's Hells, having followed Ludinus' plan to the letter, now risk becoming as big of villains as Vespin Chloras for even worse reasons - a total lack of imagination and a deep unwillingness to engage with any hard question that would force them to face their lack of interiority as a party.
#cr meta#critical role#i'm writing this while a little hangry so excuse the pessimism#but this campaign has been nothing but missed opportunity after missed opportunity#i do hope that critical role take a while to regroup and ask why this campaign has fallen as flat as it did#i'm aware that each member of bell's hells have their own interiority and their own reasoning for/against releasing predathos#i'm especially aware that orym has never once said that ludinus had a point and should be stopped in his tracks and that the rest of the#party vaguely agreed with him (or at least didn't push back on it). it has been deeply frustrating to see this campaign turn out as it has#because of a total lack of imagination on bell's hells parts as a collective entity and a lack of leadership from the few who actually#seemed to have any idea of what they personally would like to have done. i understand why laura and ashley blinked when they did and why#they don't want to make the “wrong” decision (because of the now-decade of misogynistic vitriol that has been thrown at them)#but it's as much of a failure on the rest of the party's behalf to avoid stepping up as well#and i can understand why they didn't want to! travis and marisha make a lot of decisions as ceo and creative director and had arcs which#involved a lot of focus; the same goes for liam with the focus on caleb so i totally understand why they all wanted to take a step back her#i think regardless of how bell's hells justify their actions they effectively have the moral decision making skills of bored 8-year olds#no forethought whatsoever as to the consequences of their actions and are always surprised when an adult walks in to castigate them for#breaking the window they were told not to go near. i also think that if this starts a new calamity they should be vilified by history for#that exact reason: they knew better than to release predathos and did it anyways because what else were they supposed to do?

absolutely love mothwing but the concept of mothstar is so utterly bleak to me.
she’s a cat who has already walked the path of a warrior to the point of being awarded her full name, and yet still yearned to be a healer in her heart. she was denied the post solely due to her heritage, not to be permitted unless starclan blessed her with a sign. it was not starclan who provided this holy signal but her brother, and despite the stress, guilt, and trickery which stemmed from the false omen she still finally got to be a healer as she had always dreamed. fully committed to her post, she was giving the practice her all despite everything and it shows. you could tell this was her true passion. when it got out she was not appointed by starclan, she was stripped of her title in an instant. it didn’t matter how loyal and dedicated and skilled she was, she’s just a faithless half-clan loner to them. always reduced back to being a warrior like a goddamn punishment. when she finally regained her post due to a genuine sign, it only lasted a few seasons before the kin and then the imposter took turns tearing riverclan apart. she was exiled, apparently not even fit to be a warrior this time although shadowclan thankfully took her in and let her work as their healer. still, all mothwing wanted to be was *riverclan’s healer.* that is literally all she wanted her entire life and she has had to fight every pawstep of the way to cling onto a role most cats overlook entirely in the first place.
and now she’s forced to leave it all behind once again with not even a moment to fully settle. temporarily sure, but if she returns and is made to become mothstar? once more giving up her passion for the good of riverclan, but this time it’s permanent. she’s already over eleven years old, and now with nine more lives she’ll be spending each and every one as a warrior. all the current cats in her clan will likely die before she does, and the ones which come in their place will only *ever* know mothstar, the warrior, the leader of riverclan. not mothwing, the healer, the thing she committed to through thick and thin when her dedication to the clan was called into near constant question over things out of her control. and when mothwing finally, FINALLY dies, it will be as mothstar. she will give the leader which succeeds her a life, that too will be as mothstar, a life bestowed for leadership and not for healing. but it never was about what she truly desires, only what others thought best.
this is just my opinion of course formed over all we know about her and the several arcs she’s featured in but dude. Dude.

"True leadership begins with altruism and advocacy for those who cannot speak for themselves. When we as a collective stand together as a united front, to offer our empathy and compassion, it represents true humanitarian efforts, humility, respect, and the greatest force of love. We are not separate from one another, we are all one. Beyond the silence, ignorance, pride, and ill intent, we must always place ourselves in the scope of what the other is experiencing. When we engage in deep reflection, observation, be change that is required or needed, allow another to express their anger, despair, shame, guilt, we then allow the nurturing process to reign, as another reconnects with the fragments that were once lost. Beyond the experience, reconnect with those during their pivotal moments of turbulence, allocate time and resources to ensure that those the require additional support have the ability to learn their options. Above all, lead with mindful awareness, that communities or individuals may shutdown dialogue, or do not want to see change within the system. Encourage forgiveness at every interval when you recognize or encounter ignorance, and most importantly, remain acutely aware and vigilant of those that enable a culture of violation of trust. Separation, isolation, and fragmentation dissolve the human spirit rather than enhancing cohesiveness. Promoting unity, transparency, consistency, leads to unparalleled recovery and rehabilitation for all involved."

DATV Spoiler thing (Late-Game Crow Thoughts)
in my heart of hearts, I do not think Lucanis would remain as first talon for very long (or a crow for that matter), and if I had MY way with the DA lore the events of datv and its final battle would spell the end for the Crows, at least as the organization as we know them. I think both Tevinter Nights and datv's Treviso plotline, and even going back all the way to Zevran, demonstrate that the Crows strategy of "cruelty breeds strength" is not viable, and instead breeds bitterness and infighting.
DATV's ending is pretty open-ended, so the most optimal outcome in my opinion is after the fight, Lucanis refuses the title of First Talon (as he states multiple times in The Wigmaker Job that he doesn't want it) and publicly resigns as a Crow to join Rook's Veilguard full-time, which results in a blow too large for the Crows to handle after all their losses in the fight against the Gods. Maybe even Caterina is killed in the Big Battle, if we're lucky.
I think it would be cool if the Crows were rebuilt (most likely by Teia and Viago?) as something closer to their function in DATV, Antivan patriots protecting their home, and did away with things like the compradi and other excessively cruel aspects of the Crows. The New Crows would also let their members choose their contracts freely and leave if they want to. I don't think they'd be as influential or powerful of a force as they were before, but it would lay a more stable foundation and return them to their revolutionary roots.
Alternatively, the Crows 100% fall apart, leading to a time of chaos for Antiva, escalated perhaps by Viago actually making a bid for the throne.
Even if neither of those outcomes happen though, it does not change the fact that Lucanis Dellamorte would not accept the title of First Talon, especially after spending time with the Veilguard team, no matter the consequences. Even if the Crows remain completely unchanged and he had to become a fugitive like Zevran, I think he would. (Besides, he'd have the Veilguard protecting him, a group that quite literally just saved the entire world, in a more public way than the hero of Ferelden). Everything in his arc, from both his short story and the game, points away from the Crows.
