Army ants, a name commonly given to various species in the subfamily Dorylinae and other related subfamilies, are highly social insects renowned for their nomadic lifestyle and aggressive predatory behavior. These ants form large colonies that can consist of hundreds of thousands or even millions of individuals. Army ants are characterized by their lack of permanent nests; instead, they construct temporary living structures known as bivouacs using their own bodies. These bivouacs are formed around the queen and serve as a mobile base for the colony during their relentless search for food.
The diet of army ants primarily consists of other insects and small animals, making them some of the most efficient predators in their ecosystems. Their coordinated foraging behavior, referred to as "raids," involves massive numbers of ants swarming in organized lines or columns to hunt and overwhelm prey. Army ants utilize their powerful mandibles to subdue and dismember their targets, ensuring a steady supply of food for the colony. The raiding strategy is so effective that it can significantly influence the local biodiversity, with prey species often temporarily fleeing areas that army ants occupy.
Army ants play a crucial ecological role, both as predators and scavengers, helping to regulate insect populations and recycle organic matter in their habitats. They are most commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in the rainforests of Central and South America, Africa, and Asia. However, their aggressive foraging behavior and sheer numbers also make them a fascinating subject of study, revealing insights into the evolution of sociality and collective behavior. Despite their intimidating reputation, army ants contribute to the balance and dynamics of the ecosystems they inhabit, earning them a critical position in their environment.

Are Humans Self-Aware?
Ants have often tested humans for self awareness. They placed objects in our homes and were shocked we didn't cover them in sand.
"Although humans build interesting nests & show signs of cooperation, can they really have rich inner lives like ants? Unlikely."
They laid pheromone trails & we ignored them.
"Even a newly eclosed callow or a termite could have followed these trails! Human intelligence is perhaps similar to that of a lichen... or perhaps an aphid at best."
