False Honey Ant - Prenolepis imparis

Let's briefly revisit these mismatched individuals and be reminded of the warmer days of spring and nuptial flights. Though of different sizes and forms, the Ants in these pictures are the same specie, but are simply designed for different purposes. All the smaller winged male Ants here must do is secure a female and successfully form a mating pair with her. After that, his job is done and that'll be the end of him. At least he gets to enjoy the sun and breeze as he does so, as other species of Ants may have to venture underground to find a mate. Those that do are heavily scrutinized by queen's workers, and should he be deemed unfit, he will be carved apart and converted into food for the colony. If he's lucky, it will just be the wings that are eaten (first). Meanwhile, the swollen female has a long life ahead of her, especially when she finds a suitable colony location deep within the ground.

When the queen is ready, she will have shed her wings and shall foster a wonderful home teeming with loyal subjects and defenders by suppling an egg output thanks to the male's contribution. With a fill of resources inside her abdomen, she has all the energy she needs to facilitate a nest and the first batch of workers. Do not be confused however, she is full of fat reserves, not honey (unlike true Honeypot Ants such as Myrmecocystus spp.), hence the name "False Honey Ant". As the fat reserves begin to dwindle, however, sclerotization of exoskeleton progresses, as can be seen in the winged queen in Picture 9. As such, these young queens have time, but not unlimited time to find a home. I hope to see the nuptial flight this year if I can, but the emergence can be somewhat unpredictable. What is predictable however, is that this Ant will likely emerge earlier than other species as they are more tolerant of colder temperatures. They are so tolerant in fact, that they may even forage during winter, provided it isn't too cold and snow doesn't impede their locomotion.

durant evos where all male ants evolve into waify support roles and all female ants evolve into bulky physical workers/warriors unless they know a flying-type move in which case they evolve into a huge spatk tank queen ant

Coming out of my cave to post art on here again

I'm trying ( heavy emphasis on trying 😭 ) to make designs for every arc 1 WoF character, and since mudwings are the easiest tribe for me to draw I started with clay and his siblings

Their shapes and stuff make sense in my head and have reasonings but I can't put them into words rghHHgdgGGRRRghhgfh

CHARACTERS; CLAY [ TOP LEFT ] , SORA [BOTTOM LEFT ] , UMBER [ TOP RIGHT ] , REED [ BOTTOM RIGHT ]

For Clay I wanted to make him simple, going along with him not thinking that he's anything special and not fit for the prophecy. He's still brighter than his sibs though, and has the brightest colored scales before his underbelly. (Do those have a name?? )

For Sora I wanted her kinda deer-like, with softer/less bold edges than the others. She has a scar in the same place Crane's death wound was.

For Umber I just stuck pretty closely to the canon design, adding some splotches and giving him a different shape than the others.

Finally, for Reed I just made him clay but duller, and more red. He nearly looks just like clay shape-wise, but is more inward. (I have no idea how to describe this 😭)

For Marsh I made him more sharp and edgy than the others to go with his anxious personality. His colors are very similar to Clay's, but he has splotches and light colored horns. (I love Marsh, he's underappreciated)

For Pheasant I wanted to base her off of a pheasant. Her markings are similar to those of a ring-necked pheasant, with her reds being the same as Umber's. She originally had green-ish yellow on her to go with her eyes (and also because pheasants have green on them) but I couldn't get it to work. (crying spongebob image) Her shape is more 'elegant' than her sibs. I think her design is my favorite out of all of these.

For Crane I based her lightly off of a crane. (🤯🤯🤯) She shares colors with sora and umber. (Sora because obviously, Umber because I needed his reds 😁) since really all we know about her is that she was protective of her sibs (as literally all of them are) I made her fierce and determined looking. Version without her death wound below

I got more confident in not following the canon designs super closely the more designs I made and it shows 😭😭 I never realized how much variety you can make in mudwings despite them being the 'boring' ones

While the 5 Hunters saga is clearly more polished and epic (and my fav), the 3 Hunters saga, the og, is just, so so perfect. The dynamics, the experimental trickery, the character development, *chefs kiss* lightning in a bottle and everyone could feel it.

Carpenter Ant - Camponotus sp. - Winged Queen

In a matter of just a minutes, this determined queen wrestled a pinecone, blazed a trail through rocky terrain and boulders, climbed a vertical mountain using only her tarsal claws and then walked along the mountain's ridge before flying off into the horizon. Insect travel may seem slightly mundane to us, but to an insect (even one large enough for a finger) this is quite a journey to undertake. In this particular case, the journey is well worth it as this Ant is searching for the perfect site to establish her home. The real estate market seems to have brought her to Squamish's Britannia Mining Museum where there could suitable colony sites beneath stones or (preferably) in old wood or stumps. This is a crucial time in a Carpenter Ant queen's life as she needs to move with purpose and establish her colony before the other queens do the same. Moreover, with no fellow workers or colony to protect her, rival Ants many take issue with her presence in their territory. She can defend herself with her mandibles if necessary, but otherwise relies on her antennae and eyes to search and her wings to move long distances. Perhaps with the collision of human activity here among nature, there are opportunities to nest near a building and take advantage of infrastructure?

As challenging as arthropods are to draw, I wanted to create a detailed look at one of my two uplifted which I call the Sprites. I actually imagine a story line with these and the other new uplifted the Scurachin who will get their own dedicated post.

Like the rest of the uplifted from my Centauri Universe, the Sprites are hybrids of various Earth animals that possess human level sapience. In their case, the Sprites are a combination of ants, bees, and portia spiders. They consist of four main castes (workers, warriors, drones, and queens) and communicate primarily through pheromones, visuals, and vibrations. The workers, the most numerous caste, and responsible for constructing elaborate nests and communication systems (a network of vibrating web strands) as well as hunting and gathering. Like bees and ants respectively, Sprites are callable of making honey and growing fungi as alternate food sources. Though all castes have venomous vangs, the warriors are the only caste to possess stingers and can spray formic acid. Their role is to protect their colonies as well as assist in hunting more dangerous prey. In normal bee and ant colonies, the drones sole purpose is to breed with the queens (often perishing shorty afterwards). Sprite drones serve a similar purpose but have more individual intelligence due to their larger size they play some leadership roles along with the queens. Being the largest caste members, the queens have the most individual intelligence as their size allows larger brains and more neuron density. Due to this, they play major roles in leadership as well as breed. However, much like bees, sprites actually have a democratic system where important actions (moving locations, gathering spots, attacking targets, etc) are voted on by the other caste members with even the workers suggesting key actions.

As mentioned previously I'll do a dedicated post to my other new uplifted at some point in the future. I'm working full time now so my posts will unfortunately be a little less frequent.
