(source: Hashimoto et al., 2020. Constraints on the jumping and prey-capture abilities of ant-mimicking spiders (Salticidae, Salticinae, Myrmarachne))
Sometimes science is about properly confirming what one already suspects -- in this case, that the most absurdly stretched-out ant-mimics of genus Myrmarachne might not be as nimble as their more normal-looking cousins. Indeed, Hashimoto et al. found that the reduced mobility was severe enough to decrease their prey capture rate, at least when it came to the flies used in these experiments!
(It's possible that in the wild, the less-mobile mimics might need to prioritize less-mobile prey as well, including plant-derived carbohydrate supplementation, but the researchers weren't able to confirm that within the bounds of the study.)

Cartoon of the day. This random concept goes way back to 2014. A character I had created, which is an imaginary Gasteruption pilot. I still need to give her a name. Perhaps Daucus, which is the genus for wild carrot. They're called carrot wasps because they have an affinity for flowers in the Apiaceae, which is the family wild carrot is in. I don't really remember or know why I chose a Gasteruptiid for that role, but thinking back on the idea gives me some nostalgia to my early wasp character design days. I decided to redraw her for old time's sake.

12th November 2024: Beautiful autumn leaves, Red Admiral which was exciting to see and shaggy scalycap mushroom and leaves at Lakeside Country Park
Blue Tit shining beautifully in the sun, Wren, Black-headed Gulls, Great Crested Grebe, Moorhens and Tufted Ducks seen well, wild carrot looking great in the sun, purple loosestrife seed heads, old man's beard, apple, wasp, hoverfly and turkey tail were other highlights at Lakeside at lunch time. Starlings were nice to see at home today.

Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) and (Dolichovespula maculata (bald-faced hornet) plus Ammophila procera (common thread-waisted wasp)
We planted this fennel three or four years ago so this short-lived perennial is probably at the end of it's natural lifespan. Fennel looks much like it's relative dill (Anethum graveolens) but fennel is usually much bigger and twice as tall (up to eight feet). Both fennel and dill impart a liquorish flavor to food and both have edible bulbs.
Fennel is a member of the carrot family Apiaceae and in early August, it's like an insect magnet. Like bees, these wasps drink nectar to generate the energy to fly. But, unlike bees, wasps are also voracious meat-eaters and provide your garden with a form of natural caterpillar control.

Look at the proportions of this lady! Those boots on the back legs! The way she folds her wings! The long as heck abdomen! An exquisite wasp if I do say so myself.

In a monumental discovery for paleontology and the first of its kind "Mummy of a juvenile sabre-toothed cat Homotherium latidens from the Upper Pleistocene of Siberia"
Abstract The frozen mummy of the large felid cub was found in the Upper Pleistocene permafrost on the Badyarikha River (Indigirka River basin) in the northeast of Yakutia, Russia. The study of the specimen appearance showed its significant differences from a modern lion cub of similar age (three weeks) in the unusual shape of the muzzle with a large mouth opening and small ears, the very massive neck region, the elongated forelimbs, and the dark coat color. Tomographic analysis of the mummy skull revealed the features characteristic of Machairodontinae and of the genus Homotherium. For the first time in the history of paleontology, the appearance of an extinct mammal that has no analogues in the modern fauna has been studied. Upperside wings of male is black, unlike tannish female
Females have orange half moon shaped spots on their upperside of hindwings but males don't have or very faint orange half moon shaped spots
Male smells like 'deer musk'
It's pretty easy to distinguish them to other Swallowtail butterflies family as they have red furs on their thorax and abdomen!
