Today's bug photo is this cute Five-spot Burnet. I was really excited to see this guy because I'd seen photos of them before and always wanted to see one for myself. Their bright red spots are so pretty! And also dangerous, because these day-flying moths are poisonous; when under attack they secrete hydrogen cyanide obtained from the plants they feed on as caterpillars, and their bright spots act as a warning to birds and other creatures that might eat them.

These 2 colonies of ants comes out in spring and fall. They are at an almost constant war with the colony on the other side of the sidewalk.

Seeing this colony grow over the years has been something that I have really enjoyed. I know most people dont like ants especially when they get into their homes. However I sure do love them
