i made a post about this a while back, but i'm the biggest fan of them being in a messy ass throuple in college. specifically it being ford and emma may having to share fiddleford and hating it, while fidds is completely oblivious to them not liking each other.

thats why genderbending these guys is hard! the fact they are guys is partly why they are like that. im ftm myself and being ftm can make you attach to toxic masculinity more instead of less. but that would mean portraying the trans experience with nuance ig.

i think sometimes they just make a character ftm for sex reasons vs actually wanting to explore anything interesting imo.

i would argue that i think people give themselves roadblocks when writing female characters in general. to be honest, i think a lot of people are scared of writing piece of shit women for the same reason they're scared of writing piece of shit queer people. genderbent stans can work, like i can absolutely see girl ford resenting other women and seeing herself as intellectually superior. the same goes for girl stan. it's just a matter of applying and adapting details to the same caliber as one would with them normally.

in terms of people making them trans for sex reasons, i totally agree. i've never read a fanfiction where one of them is trans that isn't primarily written for the sex scene. there is so much that you can do with exploring transness in the 80's, ESPECIALLY when it comes to trans men. like stan fakes his death and uses false identities, you can easily spin that into him doing it to keep his assigned sex a secret. did he get surgery? what and when and how? IS IT IN ANY WAY RELEVANT TO THE STORY? i don't know, because it never goes further than todays politics. which is a shame, because i hate seeing "trans stan pines in the tags of a fic and immediately going "oh the portal building melodrama will be the prologue to him getting his pussy dominated again, boring don't care."

everyone writes stan to be too nice. he is a bastard and hes self aware about that fact!!! so i appreciate you write him like an actual dude

yeah it's a weird thing that i've noticed with how people tend to write characters like him. it's similar to how people portray ford: in that they pick and choose characteristics that they want him to have based on their own personal biases. i honestly do think it's an unconscious projection thing for most people. like "well i don't like or do those things so he shouldn't either." they can't see why a person would act like that outside of their own moral compass. characters have so much more depth when they have an ugly trait that can't be romanticized, so it irks me when people pretend it's not there.

also yeah, he's a guy. i think people forget that guys are assholes a lot of the time because that's just how they are and their life and personalities aren't incessantly micromanaged by society like girl's are. but like whatever he nonbinanry and bisexual and adhd so everything wrong with him has to be something that can be fixed by bottoming.
