The mixed feelings I'm getting seeing Michael Keaton in Beetlejuice look again (happy) and knowing who is directing it (sad). At least it isn't that one sequel script, but idk if I'm gonna watch it still. Even tho I really would love to see Beetlejuice on the big screen.

Over email, Burton explains that Healy and Daniel "work really differently" from him. "They're always pulling up songs from Spotify, or checking another reference for a chord progression. I wanted to help change that, I guess," he says. "There were moments, sparks where songs were being bred, but ultimately we made a bunch of early demos." When he learned that Healy and Daniel also started talking to Jack Antonoff, the most in-demand pop-rock producer on the planet, Burton lost all motivation and bowed out. "It was a huge blow to my confidence when they met with Jack," he admits. "It still stings, honestly." Ultimately, the pairing of Healy and Antonoff makes sense. They're both endlessly referential music nerds who are known for their voluble, neurotic personalities; both have made music videos in which they are seen talking to therapists. "People may think that it's 'uncool' to work with the biggest producer in the world—I don't give a fuck," Healy says, leaning in. "I wanna make a great fucking record." At this point, Healy counts Antonoff as one of the few close friends he's made in recent years, a kindred spirit. "Jack doesn't get enlisted by a lot of the best artists because he's some go-to guy—Jack's good," he explains. Healy also makes it clear that he's always the one in full creative control—of production, songwriting, performances. "Everything the 1975 does, I write." He laughs softly. "No one touches the lyrics."
August 9, 2022: Producer BJ Burton describes his early involvement with Being Funny in a Foreign Language, explaining that it 'stung' when The 1975 chose to work with Jack Antonoff, instead. (source)

The whole point of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is that the film doesn't want you to take it seriously.
I'd argue the most significant thing the whole film is Betelgeuse still pining for Lydia after all this time. And even then, the wedding only takes itself seriously when they waltz in the air. Go back and watch how Rory and BJ both call it a dream and nightmare, and we cut to Lydia waking up right at the end.
"I love a good dream sequence." "You're that thing from my dream." "Really more nightmare material, but thanks." "I just had the strangest dream."
Everything is up to interpretation. Everything is possible. Lydia becomes undependable as a narrator once Rory throws the pills away. We don't know if we can trust with our own eyes if what we're seeing is real or not.
This whole movie could be Beej having a "strange dream" where their marriage didn't work out. It could also be them having the same dream, as to quote BJ's "psychic connection" line where they both get revenge on their exes. Astrid might not even exist.
As @xxx-theartofsuicide-xxx put it, Lydia could've become this spinster in the attic. She's driving herself to madness.
Beej and Lydia could've been married this whole time and him disappearing from the bed was just to screw around with her for shits and giggles.
If you're looking at it from a linear narrative standpoint, you can't really place pieces together. Take it at face value or make it your own. Tim Burton is a fucking genius.

As an old school Tim Burton fan, I cannot stress enough how much I love Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
is it perfect film? far from it
but it was funny and macabre and Lydia was dancing with BJ and the 8 year old in me who shipped them from the first moment I watched them (movie and cartoon) was thrilled to bits and that means something I think

Really wanna keep rambling about Beetlebabes so I'm gonna do it and get it out of my system
I am so curious about how this ending is gonna turn out. Cause like... We either get Delores sabotaging their wedding, or BJ manages to fight and stop her, concluding the ceremony.
Knowing Tim Burton, he likes to make his couples as wacky and spooky and morally grey as possible. Lydia and Beetlejuice fall heavily into his category of pairing up characters. The fact we're getting a second wedding means BJ either wants to really get out of the Neitherworld, or he just really, really wants to marry Lydia. Or both.
We know Lydia is heavily in debt to BJ, as he most likely saves Astrid. He's done everything she's ever asked and his one wish is to get married. She knows she owes it to him. Maybe not when she was 17 though haha.. The real question is: How badly does she want to uphold her end of the deal this time?
Just from speculation, it seems like Lydia is Team Beetlejuice by the end of their adventure. I don't see her taking Delores' side at all. She'll realize how shitty her half-assed boyfriend is too and have further motivation to get away from that relationship altogether.
Lydia's life has been a whirlpool of misery - her husband is dead, she's dating a slimy worm of a manager, and pops pills like crazy. At some point, she'll realize her life sucks without Beetlejuice. As gross, smelly and perverted as he is, she knows he started caring about her at some point. Why would you intentionally write a character to be miserable, only to rip away the source of her potential happiness?
In my opinion, I don't think the wedding will be completed. But I do think that Lyds will end up developing some feelings for Beej. In the case of BJ though... yeah, the trailers pretty much explain how he feels about her.
I'm not getting my hopes up, but it is possible they could really finish the wedding. Chances are extremely low, but it's possible.
But anyway, that's just my 2 cents. Feel free to reblog and say how you think the wedding is gonna go. I'm really curious 👀

Beetlejuice's Backstory and the Black Plague 💚🕷️🥀💀 PART 1
Tumblr media
I went and watched the new Beetlejuice movie twice already, can’t wait to share my thoughts! I’ve decided to make a series of posts mainly dedicated to people that are curious about the Black Plague era and BJ's past life. Join me for a historical dive that might make you appreciate Tim Burton’s work even more!
Warning: This post contains SPOILERS for the 2024 movie Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Premise
In European countries, we often study the Black Plague in schools. In Italy specifically, the disease spread multiple times throughout the Middle Ages, with the two worst pandemics occurring around 1350 and 1630. The first one alone spread in many countries and caused a total of 20 million deaths - a THIRD of the population of the whole European continent at the time.
However, the 1630 outbreak is the one we know about the most, thanks to author Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873), who described it meticulously in his masterpiece, ‘I promessi sposi' (The Betrothed): This book is one of the most important works in Italian literature. Although it is a novel, it is often treated as historical evidence because Manzoni actually shaped the story referring to archival documents and chronicles of the time.
Introducing: Monatti, the corpse carriers
In his book, Manzoni recalls a group of people called 'monatti' - the only ones allowed to practice public services such as collecting the dead and washing roads during those hellish times. This concession was motivated by the fact that monatti were considered immune to the disease.
However, they were feared and hated by the rest of the population, because they often misused their ‘privileged’ position: they were untouchable. They often extorted money from the living and stole the belongings of the dead and the sick alike, without repercussions. What made them special was the fact that monatti typically gained immunity after surviving the disease themselves.
Tumblr media
“Farewell to Cecilia,” one of the most heart-wrenching moments in Manzoni’s novel, beautifully captured by Francesco Gonin.
In fact, the Black Plague typically spread in three ways: through skin contact (bubonic plague), lungs (pneumonic plague) or blood infection (septicemic plague). The Bubonic form was, and still is, the most common and had the highest survival rate, though it was still quite low. It was easily identifiable because it caused the lymph nodes to swell and become infected, forming characteristic 'buboes'.
It was believed that if a plague victim survived five days, the fever would subside, and they would recover within two weeks. This is what usually happened to the monatti. Similarly, Renzo, the protagonist in Manzoni’s book, recovers, though he never becomes a public worker.
Now, let’s dive back into Beetlejuice’s backstory.
Tumblr media
Amidst the eerie glow of moonlight, he's depicted among corpses, at night, behind a wagon, stealing from the dead that were just thrown into a communal pit by plague doctors.
Notice how he’s directly touching the bodies with his bare hands, without any protection: usually, that was considered a death sentence.
In Manzoni’s book, there is a character that meets their end in a similar way, simply by touching the clothes of an infected person. During that era, the danger was so great that people used to burn the bodies of the plague victims along with their clothes, beds, and other possessions.
It is also worth mentioning that, during plague outbreaks, some city governments (particularly in Italy and Poland) imposed strict limitations on the movement of people and goods. In some areas, a nighttime curfew was also enforced (Yes, we invented the lockdown centuries ago!). Under those circumstances, being caught outside your own house at the wrong hour could mean instant death. But guess who had the freedom to roam as they pleased? Yes, monatti and plague doctors (and those with special permits).
Conclusion: Beetlejuice wasn’t just 'a humble grave robber', as he claims. He was definitely a plague survivor and, most likely, a monatto.
The fact that this scene was unveiled and narrated in Italian during the Venice Film Festival further convinces me that this is the correct interpretation of the sequence.
So, what do we think? Have you ever heard or read about The Betrothed before? Anyways, if you liked this analysis, make sure to check out PART 2 (coming soon), in which we can delve even deeper into Beetlejuice’s mysterious past!
Until then, have a fantastic week! ✨
